After going to a bruins game with a friend a few weeks ago, we were starving and our dinner reservation wasn't for a few more hours. It was the coldest day of the year so far and we didn't want to walk all over trying to find somewhere to get a quick bite to eat. Since we were already staying at the intercontinental, we decided to eat at RumBa. We split a burger with truffle fries. It was more than enough to hold us over and the burger was so good! We were surprised by how good the food was because the ratings had us skeptical, but I have no complaints besides the slightly slower service we received. Expectations were neither high or low, I was hoping for above average but to my surprise Rumba at the Intercontinental was a great option during my stay. The drinks were exceptional, tried the popular drink of Brazil, the caipirinha for the first time, it's a like a Mojito on steroids. Enjoyed every sip... The Devil drink was another great choice. Both cocktails hit the spot, highly recommend. The food was the one part of the experience that surprised me the most. Thought about only doing appetizers at first, but the entrees turned out better than expected. The Ahi Tuna Tostada was the perfect starter, enjoyed it very much. Portion could've been better though. The Barbados Fish Tacos were very tasty and most importantly, fresh. The Chicken Thyme was was moist and cooked to perfection, a great option for those looking for something on the healthy side. The one Ding goes to the fried calamari, this one I didn't enjoy .. it had a good sauce but was way too salty. The Guacamole was outstanding, but the portion again could've been better. If staying inside The Hotel is your thing, give Rumba a try. They offer a good menu and provide good service. If anything they are a bit pricey and could do better on some of the portions considering the cost...Something to be mindful of. read more

Visited again as I am visiting Boston for old times sake and hate to admit how bad it has become. I bleed green for RumBa....!! Ok... maybe that was a bit cryptic. As an environmentalist and co-founder of the largest sustainability networking group, I was not only thrilled to find a certified green restaurant at one of my favorite hotel chains in the Intercontinental Hotel, but also one where the bar food was delish beyond expectation. I had the Garlic Nantucket Scallops (holy cow good..... ok... holy SHIT good!), the truffle fries (weren't the best I had, but good enough), the pulled pork sliders, and the chicken wings. Seriously good grub for a rum and champagne bar. And for you trivia nuts out there.... a lot of people don't realize that RumBa is not "rumba" the dance, but rather, homage to the Boston accent. Yep, it's "Rum Bar" pronounced "Rum Bah". And yes, there is a specialty line of rum-based cocktails on the menu. read more

Only 2 issues with food, but not going to give less stars because of it. Wife's burger had a weird taste, so she didn't finish it. Staff saw that she didn't eat it maybe 2 bites, took off bill. Never was expecting it to be removed, just answered them honestly since asked. Triple chocolate brownie comes with a blondie??? Don't drink scotch there. They have a wide selection and the prices seem reasonable but was charged $3 extra dollars for having it up, which is exactly how you are supposed to have scotch. They claim that fact is in the menu somewhere but who does that? It's like buying a margarita and having to pay extra not to have salt. I did talk with an assistant food and beverage manager who was not helpful at all and he couldn't resolve the issue by simply crediting me $6 (2 drinks) out of my total 4 night $1,500 plus bill at the Intercontinental. Sad, go to Lucky's Lounge and drink Oban 14 neat for $14 with no "up" charge. Better vide, bartender, management and policy. read more

My most recent mantra has been - at least this summer - when in doubt, head to the Intercontinental and grab a seat at one of their many bars. Chances are - not only will you not be disappointed with your decision making process, you will be surprised and vowed by things that you were not expecting. Bring in RumBa. To begin with, what an ambiance!! The decor is underplayed yet very classic. The music is not too loud. The staff is very attentive and super caring. And to top it all off - the drinks are out of this world!! I have been here for a couple of private events and then to meet friends on a whim after work. Every one of those occasions have been times that have been embedded in my memory capsule - all for good reasons. Here are my distinct takeaways that keep bringing me back to IC for so many... + Drinks: Where should I begin. The kind of choices you have are incredible. I especially love the fact that the cocktail menu has a couple of specialty drinks / concoctions that i had never come across before. 1944 Mai Tai: Yes Please! + Not Literal: Just because the theme is all about Rum, doesn't mean you cannot get to pick a non rum based libation. Of course you have the equally fun VodkaBa right next door, but the menu boasts of quite a few combinations of non rum based drinks. + Wines / beers: Again, the choices are endless and sometimes it feels as if there is anything under the sun this place would not serve? (please - this is not the place to go for Fireball shots - and honestly, I don't know what the big hype around the same really is!?) + Champagne lounge: I dig the space and the ambiance - so demure and beautifully lit. Just right for a private gathering; whether it is truly private or corporate; goes well with either. + Food: I have to say the food choices are limited. But then again, the emphasis is really on the drinks. Ideally one should go here after a proper dinner. But if the mood is to drink and have appetizers, the food menu definitely serves the purpose. I had the fish tacos with a fancy Caribbean name - they were quite good. In a nutshell, if you are looking for a great night out with friends and peers, nothing beats RumBa when it comes to location, choices, ambiance and fantastic service. read more

This place has all the ambience of a mall food court coupled with expensive, tasteless drinks. Seriously, the place is wide open in the foyer of a gigantic hotel and lit up like a fucking K-Mart. Stocking over 30 rums doesn't matter unless you are drinking them straight or lightly mixed. I had a pineapple mojito mixed by some airhead who made a drink like her previous job was passing out samples of Bacardi at Bike Week in Laconia New Hampshire. It tasted like a shot of Captain Morgan's dumped into can of DelMonte fruit nubs. All for 15 bucks. They may as well cut the crap and just put my wallet in the glass and muddled it with a mint spring for all the enjoyment I got out of it. My girlfriend got a "Peach Iced Tea" that I'm pretty sure was mixed by the wizards over at Snapple. If you staying in the hotel, just walk out the door and down the street to Drink. If you are looking to feel slick and old school, try Cuchi Cuchi. read more

As the name suggests, RumBa offers an exhaustive selection of rum, and the idea for the bar's theme stemmed from the former presence of the once-vibrant rum trade in New England. The name itself originates not from the Latin dance, as one might expect, but instead is a play on how local Bostonians pronounce "rum bar." During the summer months, patrons can also enjoy RumBa's outdoor patio, situated right on the harbor. We walked up the small set of stairs into RumBa and felt like we were walking into a plantation. A huge wooden fan with blades in the shape of leaves circled above the horseshoe-shaped pewter bar, and the seating area around the bar consisted of couches with turquoise tapestry backs, brown leather chairs, and low tables fashioned from old Louis Vuitton trunks. To the right of the bar is a hidden room (the Champagne Lounge), which can be reserved for private receptions. The bar itself is quite a sight, as there is a three-tiered shelf covered with chicken wire and stock full of rum hanging directly above the center of the bar. As soon as we sat down, our bartender brought us waters and these amazing mixed nuts, served in a silver martini glass. They're coated with cayenne pepper and gomme syrup (a sweetener typically used in mixed drinks)--which is actually made using some of the hotel's own honey, extracted from its rooftop apiary. The drinks we got there were delicious and STRONG. A bit pricey, but definitely worth it! read more

The RumBa has become our base station for a week of being tourists in Boston. We have found ourselves here most afternoons sucking up an awesome cocktail while recovering from a day of hiking around Boston soaking up some history, eating way too many fried clams and lobsters. The specialty drink menu is mostly made up of classic rum drinks with a modern twist. If you are feeling tropical, this is the place to get your Mai Tai on, one of the best I have had! What makes this place a 5 star is the bartenders. All of the bartenders have been not only very knowledgeable about the area and the drinks but super friendly to spend time with as we continue to pursue the perfect vacation buzz. read more

What a terrible bar that enjoys ripping people off. Take a look at their liquor menu and read the disclaimer at the bottom: "There will be a $3 service charge when rocks are requested." My friends and I ordered three whiskey's with ONE rock each. Just one, to enjoy the whiskey the way it's supposed to be enjoyed. Waitress did not warn us that there would be a THREE DOLLAR charge for an ice cube - we didn't even see that warning because WHO DOES THAT!? I guess we should have ordered it straight and gotten a cup of ice to make our own drink. Although the waitress was nice, she did a poor job of trying to explain the 3$ charge, and also could not name another bar that has service charges for ice (though she claimed she's "seen it before") If anyone has seen this charge anywhere else please let me know where so I can avoid that bar. The atmosphere reminded me of what I would imagine an old, creepy cruise ship to be like. Also, who cares about a big rum selection? It doesn't make a difference when most people just use rum for mixed drinks. And (since I'm on a roll) what a dumb name for a bar, I think we've all had enough of the play on words/Boston accent names. read more

These monthly Champagne parties at RumBa are the new hot spot in Boston. It's a young and good looking crowd and the space is fabulous. What takes it to the next level is the attention to detail that these people put into these parties. I walked in through the open fire lit lobby to find RumBa buzzing with people in the heart of the hotel. Bubbles were flying everywhere, Champagne mojitos were being served from a bar made out of carved ice and there was even free chocolate covered strawberries and truffles that you had to snap off a chocolate covered ice cone. Can we say PIMP. The music was amazing! It's so rare to find a trendy spot in the city that is not a club and that you can still dance. The DJ was great, people were dancing and they even had a video DJ projecting movie scenes and images above the dance floor to the beat of the music. The event is free and I got free champagne left and right, although that's just because I know people (who's the elite yelper now bitches). Oh another awesome perk: You can drink outside while smoking a cigarette and overlooking the water. Where else can you do THAT in Boston? Had it been 20 degrees warmer with more fake breast implants and I would have sworn I was back home in Miami Beach. read more

My date and I didn't feel like venturing out into the cold so we came down here for have a bite to eat and watch the Patriots' playoff game! The atmosphere is so open and very different because the lobby flows right into the restaurant and right out the other side. I really liked that. Prices items were naturally elevated because we were in a nice hotel, but that's to be expected. We started off with a Spicy Salmon roll. It was very good. Then we ordered Sirloin Burger Sliders and the Latin Flat Bread. The food was so good. Our servers were very humble and helpful with aiding us in our eating experience. This is a beautiful bar, although it's a hotel bar and it's very expensive. It's off the hotel lobby and is extremely loud and the music they were playing was terrible (J. Lo). We had to ask the waitress to turn the music down (there's an echo because the clielings are so high) and she made a comment about people often complaining about the loud music. It was 7:30 on a Wed. night and it's not a dance club. Not necessary. We settled on a separate room off to the side of the main bar. It was gorgeous with red velvet couches and its own bar (not functional at the time since the room was empty) but it would be perfect for a private party. My two friends and I were the only people in this room all night, which was nice. Service was attentive but somewhat unprofessional. We ordered 2 $40 bottles of wine (the starting price on the wine list) and each time, we were not even given the opportunity to taste it. The waitress opened it and just poured all 3 glasses. We laughed it off and figured that's what we get for ordering the cheapest wine on the menu (needless to say $40 isn't really cheap). She also mispronounced items on the menu and didn't know what certain items were. She also never cleared our table after we finished eating. She was very young so we gave her a break. She was friendly at least. We ordered 2 appetizers. The Meditteranean platter & the shellfish platter for 2 (which was pricey at $60). Both were excellent and the shellfish platter was enourmous. It had shrimp & lobster skewers, oysters rockefeller and giant crab legs. We coulnd't finish it all. All in all, we enjoyed the atmosphere and had a great night but it was rather pricey for after work drinks and apps. read more

Gorgeous bar filled with all sorts of bottles of rum and other spirits to pick up your own after a hard day's work in the Financial District. It was fun trying to pinpoint the names from our comfy leather seats. 10 Cane, Appleton, Pusser's, Bacardi, Mount Gay, and others I hadn't seen. Very swank and by that, as soon as you sit down you'll feel as if your bank account had swelled by several zeroes. We ordered burgers and frites, which came in a silver pot covered with a white cloth napkin to keep them warm. Good stuff. I must say that the mai tai was excellent, and the mojito was very good, too. Drinks are very pricey -- most hovering around $14 and some cost as much as $20 each! However, you're paying for top quality ingredients, the bartender's enviable skill, and that upper class club meets pub atmosphere. Consider RumBa your payday splurge. read more

My boyfriend's boss took his office here for drinks and appetizers to commemorate a co-worker's departure last night, and I tagged along. I had two glasses of pino, and sampled some New England Clam Strips, the slider-style Kobe Beef Burger, and Miel Brasserie pommes frites (AKA French Fries). The clam strips were salty (in a good way), crunchy, and all around tasty - one of three things could account for this: a) they make amazing clam strips here. b) I haven't ingested a clam strip in at least five years. OR c) those aforementioned glasses of wine were consumed quickly and consecutively, I hadn't eaten, and I do not often drink wine. Although I (and more than one other person in our party) believed the mushroom-like mass atop the burgers to be an actual, albeit odd-tasting, mushroom, turns out the burgers are "crowned with foie gras." I've had better burgers crowned with ketchup and pickles. And, as for the Miel Brasserie pommes frites - just call them french fries for christ sakes. They were good french fries, but french fries none the less. We didn't pay which is always awesome. But, the wine I had alone was $24, and to sample what I did, it'd cost a paying customer around $50. read more

This is a review for the drinks: When my friends and I walked in, we were stunned by the ambiance. The lighting, seats, noise level were all just perfect. When we were seated, the waitress brought over water without any of us asking. Service = +++ When drinks were ordered, the server brought over complimentary truffle chips and roasted mixed nuts. Both of these items were fresh, flavorful, and had a delicious crunch to it. I ordered a Guiness and my fellow colleagues had to try the pain killer. My guiness was great, but it's hard to mess up a drink on draft. The pain killers were reported by my friends to be good as well but I did not get to try it. The menu had a lot of different rum options- I will have to return to try these! The price is similar to New York pricing when it comes to drinks. Let's just say that I was whelmed. As an avid fan of dive bars, I usually don't get sucked into a watering hole's environment. Also, I don't like paying a ton of money for a drink I could make at home. That's probably why this place didn't really work for me. My cousin was staying at the Intercontinental, so we decided to check it out before going out to dinner. The club chairs were quite enjoyable, but I couldn't get over the fact that they put a wooden plaque atop the Louis Vuitton trunk that was used as a table, simply to announce to the world that it was authentic. It was classic status-symbol bull, the sort of thing about a bar that makes me say "Who gives a crap?" I'm not impressed by things that cost a lot of money that loudly proclaim that they cost a lot of money. Not to mention the fact that the money could probably be better spent on uniforms - the waitresses looked like they picked up their ill-fitting dresses at Kmart. The drinks tasted good, but not $14 good. My cousin, a cocktail connoisseur, was surprised there weren't more actual champagne cocktails on the menu. I don't envision myself going back anytime soon. read more

All the people at this party, they got a lotta style. They've got stamps of many countries, They've got passport smiles. In the emotionally and physically frosty city of Boston, this is where the neglected contingent of tanned, blonde, and vapid gather. I feel like this is the kind of L.A. wannabe type scene that Joni Mitchell is mournfully singing about: beautiful, expensive, and teeming with white umbrellas, turquoise skies, and...shallow waters. The drinks (jalapeno margaritas, raspberry mojitos, tequila gimlets) are equal parts delicious, interesting, summer-y, and at $12-14 a pop, insanely overpriced. The fries are doused in truffle oil and there's fresh spinach on the sliders. I felt fat and hairy all night long. A gorgeous little cabana gem, but shoot me if I ever want to come back. read more

Not sure what all the Rumba is about... this a typical hotel bar that seems to draw in a crowd of 20 and 30 somethings. Decor is fine but there are so many nicer places to hang. Maybe a nice place to pregame, if you have the cash to pay 14 a mixer. My wife stuck with her usual white from NZ... Glass looked decent from where I was sitting. However Cocktails = awesomeness. I started with a Mai Tai and then moved on to a sidecar. These drinks tasted like they should have (should be obvious, but it needs to be mentioned) but they were built like a manhattan.... strong and mmm tasty.... ending with a kick to head seemingly delivered by an angry mule. Did not eat anything at RumBa, so no comment.. Parking - 2 things here. Don't waste your time with the attendants under the hotel unless you are lazy, drunk or love to spend your money. It was $20 to park there as we drink 2 drinks each but what was worse was witnessing one attendant driving a customers Audi, while goofing around with another attendant running next to the car. Then we come out and one guy is reving up the customers car in front of us.... I guess you have to expect this to some degree with valets but I drive a nice car that I dont reallt want anyone else driving and so I certainly prefer not to see these a-holes playing with other peoples expensive toys.... and the guy wondered why I didn't slide him some cash..... forget it. read more

Was here again on a late Sunday night with a friend. The crowd on Sunday and weekdays are a little older. The drinks we had were great but the fries and sliders we had were fantastic! I highly recommend trying to find parking around the area. Valet parking at the IC is about $30. But if you have the VIP IC card its $15. This place is a great hide away and date place. I was really excited to try out this bar, so I gathered some friends to go there after work one day. The bar atmosphere is very nice, most likely due to the fact that it's new, and the couch and chairs were extremely comfortable. The problems started coming when we wanted to order our food and drinks. The service was extremely slow, probably due to the fact that you can't distinguish the waitress from a customer in their uniforms, but when they did come to the table, their demeanor was more of a fake politeness than genuine service. The menu was extremely expensive for bar food, although the food was good. I probably would have enjoyed the food more though if I could have found my waitress in time to get silverware and napkins. Somehow the thought never crossed their mind to bring silverware at all during the hours we were there. It was definitely an experience goign to Rumba, but a huge disappointment. And to top it all off, the location is not convenient to the T at all. Once the novelty of this bar wears off, I can't see customers coming back. read more

The prices didn't bother me. If you're going to a five star hotel on the waterfront, anywhere in the world, expect their swanky bar that is alcohol thematic (in this case, rum) to be $$. Fine. But if you're going to be $$, be worth it. The cocktails, I concede, were pretty great. Well-made: boozy but still having layers of flavor. But things go downhill from there. The extremely pricey food was mediocre--greasy and over-salted. Let me stress: I don't mind the cost. But I do expect something pricey to be quality. The thing that should be holding everything together--the service--was terrible. I brought a party of 15 to the bar, which never got very busy, and we were treated like a huge inconvenience. Drinks and food were slow to arrive. Maybe the waitresses were so surly because they are made to dress like vampire milkmaids. It wasn't horrible, but I won't be making a special trip here again. read more

Lackluster service, small menu, gorgeous decor. Service: the staff here were less than friendly, would walk away while you were still in the middle of a sentence, and took forever to do anything. We ordered a couple of appetizers while waiting for our room (see my review of the Intercontinental for more on that), shrimp cocktail and oysters. They forgot/never heard us order the oysters. Awesome. We had drink vouchers for $15 apiece, so I ordered a $20 glass of champagne (hey it was my birthday, I'm allowed), prepared to pay the difference...only to be told, once I'm almost DONE with it, that the voucher wasn't good for that drink b/c it cost more than $15. Um, thanks for letting me know. We had the vouchers on the bar, so the bartender knew we were using them. The decor of the place is beautiful. From the wrought-iron scrollwork/windows, to the vintage Louis Vuitton trunks used as coffee tables, it's just gorgeous. We probably wouldn't head back, unless we were meeting people staying there. But at least we know what we're getting in to this time. read more

Intercontinental has always been one of my favorite places in Boston.RumBa bar is not as busy as it used to be but it's still nice. We had a reservation for 8, didn't get a table until 8:30. The host told us to sit at the bar to grab a drink while we waited but the bartender refused to serve us drinks unless we ordered food, regardless of the fact we were waiting for a table. Once we finally got sat, the server didn't even come over to us for 15 minutes and when she did, she immediately just asked if we were ready to order. No introduction or anything, just "are you ready to order?" We didn't get our drinks for another 15 minutes, a total of 1 hour after we initially arrived. Her lack of service wasn't entirely her fault though because she was the only server on the floor with a fair amount of tables, so that is poor planning on management's part. Nevertheless, it was very frustrating and we won't be back. read more

Who doesn't like $5 crab cakes? Well I certainly do, as does my friend who went here with me last night. They were really good, $5 each, and came with a small portion of salad greens. Apparently Rumba is running some stimulus package specials, they also have a Kobe beef slider deal, but I can't recall the special price. I had a mai tai and my friend had some kind of caribbean cooler drink, or some such thing. The mai tai was very good, albeit $14. However, I knew before I went there that the speciality drinks were really expensive, so I can't hold that against them. And you certainly got quite the bang for your buck. Also, beers are only $4, which is comparable to almost any other bar in Boston. As a matter of fact, they are cheaper than many places, especially the more "upscale" places. I'll never forget when I went to Rumor and they charged me $9 for a Bud Light. But that is a story for another day. All in all I enjoyed my experience at Rumba. They have servers if you sit at a table, and if the lounge is full they have more tables in the lobby, where you can also have server wait on you. I'll be back to try some other rum cocktails, but probably not until I am no longer laid off. read more

One of the best outdoor patios in the city. Right on the water and beautiful. Very relaxed. The crowd is slightly on the older side. Drinks are way too expensive. Service is terrible and it takes forever to get a drink. But WOW what a great location and setting! Fun for any time of day, but this is an ideal place for happy hour. Give it a try. read more

While visiting Boston in early February and staying at the Intercontinental Hotel, my husband and I stopped into RumBa for a couple of cocktails before heading out for a fun Friday night. I liked the subtle music playing. The seating was comfortable and the atmosphere was intimate enough, though they were nearly at capacity. During the week nights, Ben found them to be packed! I would have expected it to be colder, being in the lobby with an entrance in front and behind their open space, but it was not too bad. The drinks had interesting flavour and were not bad, but didn't wow me. I tried the Life & Liber Tea, then the Pineapple and Jalapeno Capirinha. Ben had a whiskey drink as well as a local beer that he enjoyed. The service was okay. There were a couple of times we wanted our server but didn't see her for a bit. We asked another server for glasses of water. When we eventually caught our server's attention, she asked if we wanted the bill and we said we were going to order a couple more drinks. Not sure why she walked away, it became clear she misunderstood us when she brought us the same drinks we'd already had. -We asked to keep the drink menu in the beginning for the purpose of trying different options. Maybe I'm thinking of a different place for I don't think this place was THAT great to get 5 stars from everyone. A nice place, for sure... but not 5 star worthy. In the Intercontinental Hotel and fits in nicely. Bar in the middle, cozy fire place on the side with comfy lounge chairs and leather couch's. Specializing in rum drinks (must have missed the champagne night) the pineapple something, amazing. But $40 for 3 drinks, give me a break. Props for knowing your clientele... rich business people going through on work trips will pay those prices. read more
