Visit #1 (Sat, Jan 14): celebrated my husband's D-Day (aka. 30th birthday) dinner with 10 friends and had a flawless experience.
Visit #2 (Mon, Feb 6): celebrated my sister-in-law's birthday with the fam. Ordered my top 5 dishes again plus tried new items. Execution was A+ as expected. The only downside was our mediocre waiter.

// AMBIANCE + SPACE //
Absolutely stunning decor: Chihuly glass chandelier, spacious wood-slab dining tables, whimsical lighting, and terrarium centerpieces! On my first visit, we somehow scored seating at the coveted high-top chef's table, tucked away in the back by the open kitchen for semi-privacy.
// DRINKS //
Inventive and delicious cocktails at high-end prices ($14 to $18 each). Fave drinks: Jesuit (citrusy and served in cool glassware with an aromatic dried flower garnish), San Lorenzo for two (similar to a Mai Tai, served in both a pineapple and a coconut), and the Inca Cooler (alcoholic version of GOYA's cola champagne soda...yum). Visit #3 will be scheduled to hopefully try RUKA's sold-out sake (Sato No Homare - violet, fresh mint, strawberry jam and cotton candy notes... I'm imagining unicorns and rainbows).
// FOOD //
Bravo to RUKA for delivering creative Nikkei and Chifa cuisines to Boston. Granted, I've never tried these cuisines before, but my foodie companions and I all agreed that everything was mind-blowing delicious, and we basically drooled over every dish. Here are my top 10 items:
1. FUEGO WAGYU MAKI - this maki was LIT...literally! Absolutely must-try! Can't go wrong with wagyu and bulgogi beef sushi.
2. Grilled Long-Bone SHORT RIB - premium-steakhouse quality served with vibrant colored veggies. Of the three monumental options on the menu, this one was my fave.
3. CHICKEN THIGH SKEWERS - fancy Chipotle char-grilled chicken but a million times better (and without any foodborne illness risks). You can order by piece at $5 each.
4. Seared BOK CHOY - great texture and umami flavor from the kimchi furikake.
5. OCTOPUS LOMO SALTADO - so much better than the boring char-grilled octopus you've been seeing on every other menu *yawn*
6. Char Siu CHICKEN FRIED RICE - you'll want to give up your low-carb diet for this.
7. Tea-Smoked Long Island DUCK BREAST served with steamed mantou buns - definitely prefer traditional Peking duck but this was pretty unique too. Prepared two-ways: deep-fried and seared slices. The slaw (with the cutest lil' sweet drop peppers) was too pickley so use sparingly!
8. Whole Crispy BUTTERFISH - definitely monumental...at a monumental price tag of $150. Served two-ways: the de-boned pieces were coated in a sweet chili panca sauce, while the un-sauced meat (still attached to the fish frame) was crispy, and neither oily nor too dry. The fish rested on a bed of shredded cabbage and avocado, which TBH no one really cared for. Glad I tried the butterfish though, but I prefer it prepared in the typical misoyaki sauce.
9. BIG FISH dessert - loved each component (fish-shaped waffle, ice cream, prickly pear sorbet, banana brulée, peanut brittle, and cocoa dusting). Thanks RUKA for this complimentary dessert for the birthday boy :)
10. MOON PIE dessert - a little strange to see an American Southern dessert on the menu but whatever, it was the best gourmet moon pie I've ever tried!
**Honorable mentions (still great but overshadowed by the other dishes)**
Crunchy Salmon Tacos, Striped Bass (with lotus chips and celery ribbons), and Eggplant Motoyaki. I also tried three other types of makis: Crispy Rock Shrimp, Hamachi Amarillo and the Salmon Ceviche, which were all decent fusion rolls. Ok fine, I'm ranking these makis last because they were healthy.
// SERVICE //
I have no complaints about the service during my first visit. However, my most recent visit is another story. Our assigned server was standoffish and cold the entire time, i.e. no intro, never smiled, did not recommend any dishes, forgot one drink, did not check in on us at any time...literally did nothing but take our food orders and payment...SMH. He was MIA when we had questions too; luckily the other waitstaff were friendly and willing to help us.
Final note: be prepared to spend a bennie per person here (after drinks, tax and gratuity). Recommend going with a group to share everything. You will leave with your belly full, your palate tickled, and your mind blown - so worth it! read more
