Went here for dinner 5/18 on a Wednesday. Made a reservation for a table Despite the reservation, the hostess made us wait for 30 minutes. Delays can happen, but it was her attitude that was appalling. She was snapping at customers as if it was their fault for coming on time. She did not once apologize to the those who were waiting despite their reservations. The vibe is ok, but you are paying high price for mediocre quality with a terrible hostess. read more

We had dinner here to celebrate my son's 21st birthday. There's no street parking so we had to put the car into a parking lot. The atmosphere of the restaurant was lively and it was pretty busy. Our server was really nice and talked us through our order, giving us her opinion and sharing with us, her favorites. We ordered a bunch of stuff to share and tried some of their delicious cocktails. We ordered: Ruka Spicy Tuna Pork Yakisoba Mongolian Beef Lima Style Fried Calamari Wafu Garlic Steak At the end of our amazing meal, our server brought over some sake shots for the birthday boy, which was so nice!! We had such a great night all around. So glad we tried this place! read more

Ruka - Sushi Bars Near Me - Boston, Massachusetts

Walked in on a busy Monday night with no reservation and we were immediately offered a seat at the sushi bar, which has a server. Space is very well laid out and decorated and while service was a little slow, not unexpected with how busy they were, it was a welcome place to enjoy the environment and decompress. Appetizers were phenomenal, we had the Wasabi Puffs and Fried Cheese Sticks. Sauces were smokey and sweet and best mixed together with the tempura fried melted, stretchy cheese. The puffs were flat out delicious and not overly aggressive if the wasabi seems scary and were well balanced with the spicy tuna and puff. We shared the lobster roll and it was incredibly light and fresh with a nice portion of lobster. Sake is by the glass and small beer & cocktail list but you should be coming here for the excellent food and atmosphere over beverages anyway. Highly recommended overall read more

We visited Ruka on Saturday. We had reservations but decided to sit at the bar. The bar is always the best IMO We had a wonderful bartender/server named Lucas. he knew the menu inside and out. My boyfriend and I had lots of questions about the food, but Lucas never seemed annoyed by this. He has only worked for the restaurant for three months, but it seemed like he had been there for a lot longer, just with the professional, warm and engaging way he communicated with both customers and co-workers alike The cocktails and food were really excellent. Serving sizes are tapas and meant to be shared. Prices are pretty reasonable for Boston. We'll be back! read more

Our waiter accidentally gave us 3 incorrect dishes which we said wasn't ours. We felt yelled at being asked what we ordered when we had only ordered two plates and gotten only one correct plate. It was just me and my partner, and on either side of us was also a couple on each side. The couple on our left side got the sushi roll meant for the couple on our right, and the couple on our left also got the bill for the couple on our right. We were the middle man between the two tables for what felt the entire dinner. The table from our left had to ask for their sushi from our table... the staff had NO IDEA what was happening. And never asked once how our experience was going, or if we wanted anything else. Overall surprisingly the worst dining experience in Boston in terms of customer service. Although, the food was delicious!!! So total shame the experience was so terrible. read more

Love love loveeee this spot! Swanky and sexy located right in downtown crossing. The music had me dancing from the second I walked in- a great mixture of mainly afrobeats & amapiano. The food was ridiculously delicious, the Hamachi ceviche stole my heart, along with the St. Louis ribs. The only complaint I would have about the food is that the waygu mofu could've used more flavor, but it was super tender and melted in my mo! The sake was phenomenal, we went through two bottles (AKASHI TAI DAIGINJO GENSHU). The service was absolutely fabulous (thank you to Marcel!!). Overall a great recommendation for natives and even better recommendation if you're trying to impress out of town visitors. read more

My boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary and we were a bit disappointed with the service at first. We were promptly seated at the sushi bar. Although I would have preferred a table, it was a cute area to sit and people watch. After quick deliberation, we determine we wanted to order the Kimchee Rice, Mongolian Beef, Bo Bo Chicken, and Wafu Steak. After waiting fifteen minutes for our server, I decided to speak to the hostess in hopes of resolving this issue. The hostess was apologetic and reassured us our server would be with us soon. Service was slow to start, but I was fortunate that our server picked up the pace. He quickly brought out our drinks and meals. Th scrumptious dishes were put together with a few basic ingredients that delivered a unique taste and flavor. The Bo Bo chicken complimented the Kimchee fried rice. We were pleasantly surprised when our server brought out complimentary champagne for us! read more

Wow what an awful experience here. I don't know if it was management or just bad hosts but just wow. I honestly can't even think straight while I'm writing this because I'm so upset. It's a Tuesday night and we arrived early to restaurant at 40% capacity for our reservation at 7:30pm at 7pm. They couldn't seat us early, so we waited by the bar. However, it was very strange because there were SO many tables opened. We were thinking maybe it's because we reserved normal seating as opposed to a high top, but was weird it wasn't even offered. Throughout our whole wait the same tables were opened. Oh well we thought - It's fine, we waited our 30 minutes and were finally seated. We're settled, the restaurant was EVEN EMPTIER than we thought and our server comes over and we put in our drinks. It's turning out to be a good night catching up with an old friend, except for what happened next. The same host from before asked if it would be okay to move tables to the bar seating. We replied nicely we would prefer not to. She asked a second time if we would move. At this point, I am getting a little peeved because we repeated we would prefer to stay at our table thanks. On the third time, she demanded we moved and it was not an ask. I was appalled. Maybe they were trying to seat a big party? I'm unsure but there was more than enough room at the high tops this restaurant was NOT full. Very poor experience and awful host. The most APPALLING part was I think she was on her way to ask the the couple next to us to move and THEY WERE MID DINNER. Wtf. I've worked in restaurants before so I know how it works. We left and will not return. Train your people better. read more

Really amazing food, cocktails and service from Alex at the bar. Nice music and ambiance, always happening. This place connects to Godfrey Hotel, where I was staying on business, and is always busy. I loved the hawaiian crunch roll, the hamachi amarillo roll as well as the cocktail I ordered. Alex at the bar introduced me to the person sitting next to me and suggested we trade a roll so we could each try both of his favorites. I would come back here if I was in Boston. read more

I've been to Ruka once before (which was also amazing) but had the best dinner here to celebrate my best friend's birthday! I couldn't be happier that we chose this restaurant. I don't normally like restaurants that specialize in Asian fusion, but I loved RUKA! It has a similar vibe to its sister restaurants: dark, exciting, yet calming. I came here on a Friday night and was seated right away. Not much was happening at 5:30 p.m., but gradually the night got busier. The drinks were good but not exceptional. I liked the sushi rolls (especially the Phoenix Sunrise). However, if I had to recommend one thing, I'd suggest getting the Miso Mac & Langosta. This was truly unique--I haven't ever tasted these kinds of flavors mixed together before! So, basically, if you go to RUKA, try the crazy, new things on the menu and save the fried rice for another restaurant. read more

This is a really cool place and I was already super impressed by the pics online of the interior and was really looking forward to trying it out. This was a holiday dinner hosted by the hubs' boss. There were 6 of us and we ordered a lot of dishes noodles, fried rice, corn skewers, sushi, bao buns, etc. and shared everything. The ones I really liked were the corn, the bao buns, fried rice, and the hubs liked the salmon sushi. There were a bunch of other dishes that I would like to try next time! The place was quite busy understandably, it was just a few days before the holidays. But the service was great and ambiance really groovy. Would love to go here again sometime! read more

Came here last night for dinner and it was delicious. We made reservations through their online software and got a 5:30 reservation. Our server was wonderful and evening was nice, even as things got louder and busier towards the end of our meal. The small plates are about two per person. We got two sushi rolls, the Mongolian beef, and the yucca tuna dish. Everything was amazing. I can not wait to go back and try more of the menu. Ps. I love the extra charge for the kitchen staff! I think it's totally worth it and I'd be happy to tip the kitchen staff even more then the suggested 3%. Bravo. The whole industry should shift in this direction in my opinion! read more

my friends and i came to ruka restobar and we absolutely loved it! we were impressed by their sushi and cocktails. i ordered the phoenix sunrise - it was amazing. although it's slightly on the pricier end ($18), i'd say it's very worth it and i was impressed by not only the taste but also the presentation of the food. for dessert, you must try the big fish! it's their signature dessert and it tastes delicious. customer service could have been a little bit better, but overall, we had a great experience. the lighting in the restaurant is pretty dim, so it gives quite a cozy vibe - perfect for a date or a girls night out. i highly recommend ruka to everyone! read more

Very cool ambience and interior decor Great service and food. The bar shrooms are a small dish but sneakily one of the better things on the menu. Got 3 sushi rolls which were all delicious. They are quite accommodating of dietary restrictions. My dining companion has celiac disease and they were happy to put together a menu of shared tasting items that met his dietary needs. The miso Chilean sea bass and the waygu streak antichucho were particularly good. I would agree with the commenters who noted that the sushi options tended to be excessively sauced. While that style is common outside of coastal areas, surely the fish on a sushi menu in a seaport like Boston can stand on its own! read more

I've eaten here a number of times when in town for family or business events. It's always been great - the food is flavorful and delicious. This is your very typical modern, swanky downtown restaurant and bar. It's dimly lit; it's a little overpriced; and it's always not that tasty. Having walked past here so many times, we had never noticed it, and we only heard of it because my boyfriend's parents were staying at the Godfrey Hotel it's connected to. The food presentation was gorgeous though. They used colorful ingredients and decorated it with bright flowers and sauces. However, almost every dish was a little too salty because there was too much sauce or seasoning. This may be more suitable for Spanish style tapas or Latin American dishes with heavier flavors, but it doesn't really work for Asian food. A lot of their dishes were Japanese- or Chinese-inspired, like the sushi or fried rice, but the ingredients, flavoring, and preparation were hardly Asian. It was odd to eat sushi that was so salty and heavily seasoned with sauces and flavors you would never find in real sushi. I get that some people might like that, but I've had much better Asian/Western fusion food with a more harmonious blend of flavors. Overall though, it wasn't bad, and the quality of their ingredients wasn't bad either. I would say 2 dishes per person is enough if you don't have a huge appetite. Same day reservations were easy to make, and it was pretty busy for a Friday night. Most people there were on dates or with a group of friends, and I would say we (jeans) were underdressed compared to most people. Dinner was more than $400 for 4 people though, which I think is a little overpriced for mediocre food. I understand the cost though- it's next to downtown crossing, it's swanky, and it's one of those dimly lit, 'chill' downtown restaurants. Personally, I would rather overpay for high quality food, spectacular taste, some special/interesting element, or even convenience, rather than ambiance. read more

Not sure how this place has such good reviews. Service was terrible/ waited 20/25 min for just a waitress to come over and order drinks. Ordered two rolls peanut noodles and beef - noodles were so spicy and rolls were very American. Douzo is ten times better if you want authentic sushi read more

Absolutely delicious food and great service from the servers. Their drinks were great too. I forgot the name but I had one that was a gin based drink with midori. We also got a mushroom dish, I liked it but it was a bit too spicy for some of my friends. read more

More of a 4.5, a great upscale restaurant for dinner before a weekend night out. The restaurant has a club like ambiance with dim lights and fast paced music. Beautiful Asian decor on the pillars and walls. The food is a fun mix of Peruvian, Japanese and Chinese staples with a contemporary twist. Beware of the small portion sizes especially considering the prices may lead you to overestimate. Thankfully, our waiter told us early about small portions. Some of the best dishes were the Spicy Tuna Sushi, Dan Dan noodles, and strawberry mango mess dessert. Spicy Tuna: one of the stars for the night, and a first pick sushi roll. The majority of the sauce was on the side so you can decide how much you want. The fish was nicely incorporated into the roll, and the puffed quinoa added a nice crunch at the end. Phoenix Sunrise: another excellent sushi roll. Slightly sweet at the start. The fish and spicy crab flavors both shown along with the crunchy texture of the cucumber. Pork Wontons: did not have the traditional savory meat flavor of regular wontons. Something, either the sauce or another of the accompaniments, added a slightly bitter flavor as well. Chicken Fried Rice: the crispy chicken skin and wok fried chicken added a nice fried taste to an otherwise takeout-style fried rice. Didn't think the price of ~13 dollars justified the small portion. Dan Dan Noodles: one of the best dishes of the night, along with the sushi. The slightly spicy sauce coated each of the springy, soft noodles. Vegetarian as well. Char Siu Chicken: came wrapped in a slightly sweet, soft bun. The chicken was delicious with the bun. Felt like the sour peppers on top overpowered the chicken a little. I would've preferred just the chicken, bao and cilantro. Strawberry Mango Mess: enough to feed three people. This was like a dessert sampler in a milkshake cup. There was coconut ice cream, strawberries, meringue, scones, whipped cream, mango lime sauce. Layered perfectly for each bite. A great way to end the meal. read more

Normally when you go to a good tapas style restaurant mostly 4-5 out of 10 dishes are reaaaallllyyy good. But at Ruka, every single thing that we have order was AMAZING! Everything was so good that we were fighting each other to eat more! We had the Wagyu Steak, Bao Chicka Wow Bao, Chicken Fried Rice and the Lima Style Fried Calamari. Ate here twice in three days since it was at the bottom of my hotel. The first time, I dined with half a dozen people and we ordered all kinds of food. Most was very good. Service was amazing -- our waitress was attentive and had great suggestions. It's also a nice place. I would give it 5 stars on this trip. Tonight, I ordered food to be brought up to my room. I still had to pay a Doordash fee for some reason. I also asked for white rice for my Bo Bo Chicken, since it wasn't on the online menu. The Bo Bo chicken was not cooked well at all, much much worse than when we had it the first trip. But this was actually gross. And the roll wasn't as good as the couple of pieces I had the night prior. Finally, no napkins and it took a long time for the food to arrive. I would give this experience 1-2 stars... probably closer to 1. So 3 stars overall. Not sure I would go back since they annoyed me with the second experience. read more

Literally the worst service we have ever had. We were celebrating the birthdays of two members of our party, but one of us got sick so we were delayed 20 minutes. We called in advance to let them know and they told us they were going to charge us the $100 cancellation fee since they have a 15-minute grace period, even though this late policy is nowhere on their website. We called twice trying to explain our situation, but everyone we talked to (we spoke to Mariana) was super rude and dismissive. This completely ruined our birthdays. We will not be coming back here and I recommend not giving them your money, time, or service. read more

Loved the ambiance and inventive menu at this place! My friend and I had the Yuzu lobster makimono, Mongolian beef wok, and Bo bo chicken. Our favorite was the yuzu lobster roll, it was so refreshing and a great balance with the hot dishes. The hot dishes were pretty good. The bo bobo chicken with the ginger they bring to the table was quite delicious together. Now, I wasn't the biggest fan of the "puff noodles" at the base of the Mongolian beef dish, but ‍. Michael was our amazing server at the bar and made great menu suggestions. He even educated us on the Yuzu fruit. I look forward to going back and trying other dishes. read more

I've heard many things about this restaurant so I decided to try it. We had dinner here on a Saturday evening. I must say the restaurant decor is beautiful. The restaurant serves Asian fusion dishes. I thought the food was okay. - The oysters were good, it was different. I enjoyed it. - The Japanese chicken dish was too sweet for my liking. There was a sweet carmalized coating on top of it. It kinda reminds me of the Chinese takeout dish 'sweet and sour chicken' - The sushi was alright. It's nothing crazy. Overall, I thought the dishes were pretty pricey. But they do say it's more 'tapas' style. I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to dine here again. Maybe if I'm in the area. read more

Decided to try this place out for a friend's birthday. When we sat down, it took almost 15 minutes to be greeted by a waiter to even get us water or drinks. After waiting a little bit longer after the drinks order, we ordered, we got our drinks--I got the passion project and it was not bad. Not too strong, not too light. The food was pretty good too. We got the hamachi ceviche, blackened octopus, wagyu steak, and other stuff that I don't recall the names but the pictures look great. Oh! For dessert, we got the big fish. The hamachi ceviche has a good mixture between the soft fish, crunchy crisps, and richness from the avocados. The presentation is pretty nice too. Blackened octopus tastes like it was just a bit over cooked because it was a bit rubbery but it was 'good'. Wouldn't say it was bad, but definitely not as good as the ceviche. The flavor was great though. Wagyu steak....was it wagyu tho? My friend said that she had wagyu in Japan before and it is suppose to just melt in your mouth, this one took a little more chew to it if you know what I mean...but once you get into that chew.. (did anyone get the hot pickle reference). Lastly the big fish that everyone loves to eat. It was pretty interesting, a bit burnt at places but hey, who doesn't love a little carcinogen here and there in their life. It's a mixture of ice cream and berries if I recall correctly which is a good ending to the night. Very average tho. Service was all right. We felt like we waited a long time to even get greeted for water but hey...not my restaurant read more
