Well, it's been a year, and I'm happy to report that my opinion of Ruff Haus hasn't changed a bit! The Beast (Bader, the dog), has switched over to the raw-meat food and is a healthy, happy girl. She continues with the probiotics and goes tearing to her crate whenever we get out one of a variety of treats (she's big into the lamb squares and freeze-dried duck hearts). A new, great addition is the do-it-yourself dog bath! There's a ramp for the big doggies, and shampoo and towels are provided! It's very reasonably priced and both cheaper and less scary than bringing her to a groomer. Also, I prefer not to spend an hour cleaning dog hair off my bathroom walls post dog-bath at home. We plan on trying out the bath sometime soon this summer! read more

I recently moved to Lincoln Square, and Ruff Haus is a couple of blocks away from my new digs. I moved to Chicago from Kentucky, and, much like myself, my two cats had grown up on a diet of random animal parts and carbs. They were fat and happy, and I didn't know any better. Perhaps all the women with their yoga pants, double strollers, and attractive husbands rubbed off on me, but I decided my babies/cats needed the best. I stopped into Ruff Haus to pick up some new food and the staff was great. I explained to them my cats were white trash, and they helped me find something that might agree with their unrefined palates. The food was pricey, but not outrageous when you consider a small bag of the cheap stuff is almost $10 at Jewel anyway. Best of all, I could return it if my cats didn't like it. ...and sure enough, the little philistines didn't. Ruff Haus was there for me, and gave me some free samples to try out. I'm still working to get my cats to eat healthier, but Ruff Haus is a top notch place with staff that won't look at you like you're crazy when you spend 30 minutes hemming and hawing over your pet's dietary history. read more

This is my first review on Yelp, and I felt I had to write it since my experiences here have been so different than what's on here. My wife only stopped in here one time just over a year ago. She refuses to go back. She said the guy working made her feel uncomfortable by really pushing raw food for our cat. (was an older guy with gray hair). I get that raw food is good. It's also expensive. We've always fed our cat high quality food, but can't regularly afford raw. I've gone in there a handful of times since because I have a client nearby. It's just never been welcoming (although my son does love the shop cat). One time I was in there and was ignored by the woman working who was baby talking a dog. Another time, I felt like I walked in during the middle of employees gossiping. Maybe I'm old, but the vibe seems like they are trying to be hipster. Or maybe they'd be friendlier if I came in with a dog. There are so many places like this around these days, so I won't be going back. I've been to urban pooch several times, and never had these issues. It's a bit out of the way, but I'd rather give my business to them. read more

Very nice selection of everything from food, toys and treats to doggie boots and winter gear. The staff is friendly and helpful. They don't try to sell you on the most expensive stuff to make more money. They will honestly tell you what will work for your dog. Example, I was looking for winter boots for my dog to protect her paws from the salt and ice. I wanted the $50 ones that looked pretty sturdy, had thick soles and straps to hold the boots in place. Rich told me those boots don't really stay on, especially with small dogs, and recommended the reusable and disposable Bootz brand that was $12 instead. I didn't listen and bought the ones I wanted. Well, let's just say, we didn't even get to try the boots on outside because they came off within 2 minutes of my dog running around inside my apartment. So back we go to Ruff Haus where Rich graciously accepted the return. I went home with the Bootz brand, and it works perfectly. read more

Ruff Haus definitely has an incredible selection of human grade pet food, but not having a large knowledge base to go off of, I was hoping to get some additional information from the staff. Unfortunately, from the moment I walked in the door I was ignored. The person behind the counter was having a personal conversation on the telephone and never even got off the phone while he was ringing up my purchases. I love this store!!! Rich, the owner, is a fantastic source of knowledge and extremely helpful. When my new pup was having stomach issues, Rich gave us tons of food samples to try as well as other advice (who knew I was overfeeding when he looked so skinny!!). I've bought a harness here as well, that Rich spent the time sizing & fitting & adjusting for my little guy. This is the only place I now buy food -- they have a great selection & all are of the highest quality. Good collar/harness/leash/toys too. Love that Lincoln Square has a pet supply shop that carries premium dog and cat food - plus several brands of prepared frozen raw!! Rich and his staff know their stuff when it comes to feeding our pets, and carry premium brands only. Great treats, high quality collars, leashes and beds. read more

I love this place. the staff (including the furry ones) are super friendly and helpful. After cleaning their stock of one particular variety of cat food each month they offered to order a case that I could just pic up monthly, and are willing and able to make recommendations based on your pets needs/preferences. It is a specialty store, so prices are a little bit higher, but its worth it to know my cat is getting quality food. read more

We've been going here for years and always feel like we are getting quality food for our three kitties when we visit. Spot and Cisco, shop kitties, are an added bonus!! We've even bought a giant cat tree made from an actual tree--it could not have been a bigger hit. Even our geriatric siamese who has stopped jumping on counters absolutely loves his cat tree and behaves like a much younger cat since we bought it for him. read more

I really like the owner Rich he is extreemly knowledgable and helpful. I had questions about holistic dog food as well as raw food and he really anwsered all my questions. He actually recommended Sasha Formula which should help my dog's joints and after ONLY 2 Weeks it's been working very Well. I espically like that he sells you what you need, not what you dont need. I inquired about "Greenies" and he recommened a natural bone instead. I later found not only are "Greenies" unsafe and have been getting "stuck" in the animals intestines but a large raw bone is much safer. So I'm compelled to leave a review after my experience shopping here today. I'm a regular customer of this location. Also used to shop at their edgewater location prior to their closing. They participate the belly application for customers to check in and to receive discounts based on visits. I received enough points to get 10% off an item. I also received an email for this reminder. I came into the store today to purchase my usual treats and dog food. When I checked into belly app, it showed my 10% points. I also showed my email for the discount I received. When I asked for the discount neither of the workers wanted to apply. They first said I need a belly card. Then when I told them i have the app on phone and I don't have a card, I tried logging in and their app wasn't working. They also had the computer turned off prior. Regardless, of the 10% discount, would have been Aprox $3.50 off one item. I ended up leaving the store for the simple principle of they should have honored the small discount for a regular customer. Instead they insisted they couldn't provide discount. It's really not about the $ it's more about that if they choose to participate in the belly promotion that gets customers loyalty, they should return that loyalty as well. It's too bad this happened and I won't be back. I prefer to purchase from local businesses but ones that appreciate your business as well. read more
