I've visited this particular Ruby's Diner location twice--once for breakfast with my family when we were staying in the area--and once for dinner (well, a late dinner, around midnight, after doing some Black Friday shopping and we got hungry). I had a completely different experience both times, but during both trips to Ruby's, this location was pleasantly empty (hardly any customers early in the morning and for a late, late dinner). I would definitely visit this location again, just because service was pretty good and I didn't feel rushed through my meal.
Ruby's features stellar options on both, their breakfast and dinner menus, and there are still many entrees I have yet to try on each. But, for the time being, here are my recommendations, as well as some of the items on my "to-try" list:
"Three Cheese Omelette": I was torn between several different breakfast entrees during the breakfast with my family, but I finally decided on this omelette because it came with some pretty good sides. This omelette was stuffed with Monterey Jack, Cheddar and Pepper Jack cheeses, and it comes with RubySpuds (the eatery's version of potatoes) and the diner's choice of hot beignets, toast, a bagel or an English muffin. The list of sides was great (good variety), but going with the beignets was a no-brainer for me, since you don't often come across restaurants that offer beignets! I shared the omelette with my mom -- it was oozing with cheese and the eggs were light and fluffy. The RubySpuds were great, too -- very savory and tasty; I don't think I even had to add salt/pepper. The beignets side was probably the highlight of the meal. While these beignets are much smaller than others (say, the ones you'd find in Disneyland), they're a great side. The little side comes with 5-6 mini beignets dusted with powdered sugar and served with syrup. I didn't need the syrup at all to enjoy these bite-sized morsels of sweetness! What a nice touch to the available side choices.
"Chocolate Chip Hot Cakes Combo": Now, the "Chocolate Chocolate Chip" pancakes at IHOP reign as my favorite chocolate pancakes. However, I'm willing to give the chocolate chip pancakes at Ruby's a try. It features buttermilk pancakes mixed with chocolate chips and topped off with whipped cream. Though I would get my pancakes without the whipped cream, I'm hoping it's filled with a generous helping of chocolate morsels to embody enough sweetness. The combo comes with two eggs, any style (I would choose over-easy) and the diner's choice of breakfast meat -- sausage, bacon, veggie sausage, turkey sausage or lean country ham (I would go for the thick-cut bacon, hands down).
"Texas Grilled Cheese": Ruby's does it right when it comes to grilled cheese sandwiches. This has to be one of my favorite grilled cheeses because it was simply oozing with cheese. The formula is pretty simple--slices of melted American and Swiss cheeses between two slices of thick, golden-grilled egg bread. I love thicker bread for my grilled cheese, and the toasted exterior (nice and crispy) of this sandwich was perfect. The cheese was hot and the sandwich itself was buttery and cheese-filled, but it wasn't super messy to eat. I would order this "Texas Grilled Cheese" again in a heartbeat, and since I was definitely hungry at dinner time, I had no problem finishing the entire thing.
"Ruby Melt": I have to admit, I eyed this entrée when I was at Ruby's for dinner. This burger features a patty served on crunchy, grilled rye bread topped with double slices of melted American cheese and Swiss onions. If I ordered this entrée, I would probably substitute my beef patty with a turkey patty and opt for no onions.
"Fish & Chips": I'm always on the lookout for a good fish 'n chips, and the Ruby's version sounds scrumptious. This "Fish & Chips" features batter-dipped, golden-fried, flaky Atlantic cod fillets served with refillable fries. The "bottomless" French Fries alone are enough to get me to try this dish! I saw other diners ordering the "Fish & Chips," and it looked like the cod fillets were fried to perfection, sporting a crisp exterior and a flavorful, moist interior. I can't wait to try this classic one day.
"Cinnamon Roll French Toast Combo": Certain breakfast items on the Ruby's menu are served all day, such as this combo, which seems to feature everything I love in a good breakfast. It entails the eatery's sliced cinnamon roll that's dipped in egg batter and fried to a golden brown, and it's served with two eggs (any style) and thick-cut bacon. What a perfect balance of savory and sweet. Though I prefer pancakes as my breakfast go-to, this Cinnamon Roll French toast is supposed to be cin-fully sweet! read more
