This place was all abuzz on a Sunday evening, with a line to order at the counter. Then you have a choice to eat inside or outside on the patio. The Mexican Fresca drinks (horchata and others) were very popular. The somewhat limited menu is on the wall, so you can study it while you wait. We chose number 1, which was labeled "most popular" (roast beef with cheese tacos) and also ordered a bowl of posole. Believe me, these folks know how to cook. There is not a single time where I've ordered from Ruby's and they didn't exceed my expectations. Everything you know about birria tacos, you don't. Unfortunately, I've moved back to college where the taco places here and the birrias they make do not come close to the taste of Ruby's. I still remember the day where my Aunt came home with her order of birria tacos and the confused voice in my head asking if the second box was in the car or her purse. I LOVE RUBYS!! It's my all time favorite place to eat in Tyler. The only problem I have is the girls in the front at their Gentry location/271 are very rude. They just act like they really can't be bothered with you no matter how polite and respectful you are to them they will literally leave you standing there waiting when you are the only one in line. Overall, I'd give this place 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4 for Yelp). I've been multiple times and have had all of their tacos, enchiladas, rice and charro beans, and their chocoflan. There are other items on the menu that I haven't had yet, but I feel that this would be a fair review. Given the numerous Mexican restaurants and taco shops in Tyler (I certainly have not been to all of them), I will be comparing them to some of my favorites. Enchiladas - Not bad. Their take is that it is a cheese enchilada (appears to be filled with Cotija cheese, which is most similar to Parmesan as opposed to being like Queso Fresco/farmer's cheese). They bury it under a lot of lettuce and crema, which helps balance out the saltiness of the cheese. I prefer enchiladas filled with meat. They do include two fried chicken drumsticks for the additional protein but I didn't find the chicken to be seasoned well enough. The enchiladas perhaps could be better if they either mixed in queso fresco to add volume and reduce the saltiness, or even used Oaxacan for melty cheese. For the chicken, pollo asado al carbon would have been better but it might not have paired well with the enchiladas. Tacos - You can get their tacos doblados-style, which is basically dipped in enchilada sauce, filled with white cheese (Oaxacan or something similar), and fried. They also include consomme, which is a dipping broth. The broth is very flavorful and I prefer it to using their salsas. The broth appears to be what they boil their barbacoa in. Their traditional-style tacos are still coated in enchilada sauce but not fried, but come with the consomme as well. You can get chicken, steak, barbacoa, shrimp, and pastor tacos. I prefer the steak and shrimp tacos here. Their chicken tacos are a bit bland (kind of like ground or minced chicken). My favorite chicken tacos thus far are the chicken tinga tacos at Mama Olivo. Their barbacoa, while results in the delicious consomme, is a bit too dry for me as the fat is all rendered out into the broth, rather than cooking the beef in its own fat. The barbacoa tacos at Mi Mexico Lindo (the one on 31, not the other ones, as they seem slightly different) seems to do it the best that I've found in Tyler. Those are fatty and melt in your mouth. The ones at Mama Olivo are pretty good too. The pastor seems similar in flavor to the ones at King Torta. Not my favorite as I find it to be too salty and I'm a bit partial to the pastor they had at Tacos Mexico before they closed. Those had a much more developed flavor in the sauce. The steak is steak, and you really can't mess this up. But dipping it in the consomme is what takes it to the next level. The shrimp tacos aren't spectactular but are still good and my family likes them. Rice/beans - Both were very flavorful. The beans have quite a bit of meat in them, as they include chicharrones (fried pork rinds) and hot dogs (I would have preferred a different type of sausage than hot dogs). The beans were spicier than some of other charro beans I've had around town so that's a plus if you like some heat. Pozole verde - Very good. Great balance of flavors (could be wrong but I think I also tasted unrefined avocado oil which is a nice flavor enhancer or could have been something else). There's some heat from the fresh jalapeno garnish but if you don't like heat can omit (still might be some without it but didn't check prior to dumping in the chiles, onions, and radishes). There's also a healthy portion of chicken and hominy. What I appreciated from the chicken is that chicken + bones are all cooked together for extra flavor. Be warned though, if you're not used to eating soups with bones, don't just inhale it all without checking for bone and cartilage first. Chocoflan - Very good. Moist, good texture, and the right amount of sweetness. Get some. Overall, I like that they have a different style of tacos and if I have a craving for that, then I would go here. The consomme is what sets it apart for me. I think they are above average but seems quite a bit overhyped to me (they do get very high reviews on Google and Facebook). However, if there are specific types of tacos I'm craving for, I would go to other places instead. I haven't found a place yet where I like every single taco and would consider them the "best" tacos in Tyler, so the search continues. read more
