Lunch Specials end at 3pm or you have to be over 60. Got a Steak Quesadilla. Never seen it done like this before - Tortilla on bottom, steak in in middle, cheese on top. Definitely not a quesadilla, but it was still tasty. Chips and Salsa included when you sit down. The salsas were good, but there were no tiny plates included with the chips. Salsa drips all over the table because of this. Salsas were delicious! We also ordered the guacamole that was $5.00 for happy hour. The guacamole was great. Flan for desert was a 7/10. My date did mention that there were a few curdles. Service was great. Our waiter was super friendly and prompt. Atmosphere... the most obnoxious music plays... It's like 00's Pop Rock EN ESPAÑOL. My wife and I have Enjoyed our meals at Abuelo's for close to 5 years going at Least 2-3 times a month. In the last 3-4 months we have experienced a sharp decline in food quality, food portions, and the amount of liquor in a drink from the Bar. All while maintaining the same prices. I decided to do some research and found that Abuelo's parent company apparently filed for Bankruptcy in September of 2025. The Company reportedly closed 24 of its 40 stores . Abuelo's in Tyler remained opened along with 15 other locations. I know nothing about the restaurant business but I can't help but wonder how anyone can Believe that this Strategy of serving stale tortillas, reducing food portions by 30-40%, and serving alcoholic with 50% less liquor.All while maintaining the same prices is going to help a restaurant survive? It Would seem more likely that it would drive away the regular customers who have supported this restaurant for years. read more

We have not eaten here in a few years. We decide to give it a try. The waiter was fine. The ambiance was fine. We both got the chicken fajita taco. The guacamole taste like it was from a prepackaged, the rice has no flavor. The chicken had no flavor and was very small pieces and most were so dry and I had some very hard pieces. It was like the leftover crumbs off the cutting board. We won't be back. Our gas station tacos near us are way better. read more

Oh my gosh! This food was AMAZING! The black beans were the best I've EVER had!!! By the way, I eat a lot of them. They were tender and full of flavor. This is one of my in-laws favorite places to go when we come in town. The papas con chile are a fam fave. Think Mexican style mashed taters with cheese and but not spicy. I had the bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin and it was good! on ! The bacon wasn't cooked all the way as I feared but it wasn't raw. The enchiladas were great and their charro beans were pretty good. My wife loves their rice and I agree it is good. Their chips are very thin and the green pineapple salsa is not my favorite. The red sauce is OK but not very spicy. The service was good, Cara was great, but with the labor shortage it was a long wait. They keep the chips and salsas filled (so you wind up filling up on that LOL). The trio appetizer is good I like their chicharrones. We will definitely be back, just be patient waiting on your entrees right now. (Not their fault) read more

This brought back memories! When my family and I lived in Tulsa OK we used to go to the Abuelo's next to us quite often. Just seeing it really brought me back. What a find on this business trip. This Abuelo's was just as good as I remember the one in Tulsa. It's not OMGTH but I do like it quite a bit. They serve upscale Mexican food to normal Tex Mex food. The menu is bigger then I remember and just filled with tasty selections. I started with a brandy old fashion and it was delicious... smooth with a hint of cherry... actually quite good! Then I ordered a bowl of the shrimp chowder... it was a creamy, slightly spicy, filled with shrimp, concoction that when I was finished I wished I had more. (I do love soup!) Lastly I had the carnitas tacos... delightful. Could have used a little more "spice or seasoning" but they are good. As always the restaurant it's self was immaculate, The decor intriguing, and the staff super helpful and diligent. It is a good sized place with a very open inviting feel. Ambiance was relaxing and proper spacing of customers for social distancing. Food was fast and amazing tasting! It really did hit the spot and we will be back! My kids and I have been here many times. The food and margaritas are always delicious! Today was my husbands first time joining us here and wow was he impressed. He had the Quesadilla Al Horno with steak, I had two cheese enchiladas with Chile con carne, one kid got chicken nuggets, and the other got a bowl of tortilla soup. Everything was hot and so very tasty. The cherry on top of our fantastic lunch though, was our server, Janiecia. She was so pleasant, prompt, attentive, and just joy. She made our day! Husband I went in after 1pm so not crowded or busy. He had he gluten sensitive option Tamale plate. He said that he has had better tamales out of a can and we all know how bad those are. I had the Laredo plate. Where do I start. That was the worst plate of food I have ever tried in my life! The meat in the taco was the same in the enchilada and it was awful! Bland bland and more bland. Absolutely no seasoning at all. Meat was so over processed it was like paste and that is not at all appealing. Might have been canned dog food for all I know, but the dog food probably tasted better. The cheese in the enchilada, that was covered in what I assume was a chili sauce was flavorless yellow orange blob. It is a sad day when the best thing on the plate was the beans and rice and pretty sure they were canned and boxed respectively. Basically we spent over $50 to eat a few bites of something I would not slop the hogs with, because if I did, I would be arrested for animal cruelty. I used to recommend this place to everyone now I am recommending they save their money and go elsewhere. read more
