Got a burrito and they put everything inside, even the cold stuff (so California style I guess). It was too cold to eat and barely any meat since they load the inside w everything including, lettuce, tomatoes, and guacamole. Chile was just ok. Not much heat or flavor. Salsa was extremely vinegary, not much flavor other than vinegar. Horrible communication w customers. Ok prices but charge $3 to smother w chile. read more

I visit ABQ frequently for work and like to try new spots to compare to the best rated spots online. This place had good reviews and I was excited for the cheese enchiladas. I went in and ordered. Got my chips and salsa which were great. I could tell the chips were made fresh. After about 5 minutes the waiter came by and said "what kind of chili did you get?" And i confirmed green chili. Then the cook brought out the food and it was a quesadilla plate. I told him I didn't order that and he said, "oh well that's what I was told to cook" and took it away. Best part - the server came out and said he came by and confirmed with me that it was green chili quesadillas. I 100% ordered the enchiladas but the waiter continued to tell me I was wrong multiple times. I felt horrible about it, even knowing I ordered the enchiladas, but the server continued to try to make me look like I was in the wrong. I put a $5 bill on the table and left without getting the enchiladas. I don't want food from any place that is going to interact with people that way! Went here for the 1st time yesterday....as I walked in, I kept thinking to myself 'eating here is helping out the little guy/SMB;' I sit down/greeted by employee/ wait 10-12 minutes for a bowl of menudo and a plate of chilaquiles (I was really hungry on this particular day). I finish eating and walk up to the counter to pay and my bill comes out to $33 before tax?!?! I give the same employee a discerning look as to why it is so expensive? She doesn't break stride and continues to smile at me. Including the Fanta drink, this shouldn't have cost this much. Needless to say, I won't be eating here again, especially for 'just ok' food. Menudo was decent, and so were the chilaquiles, but the amount charged does not justify the price; the whole point was to save a little $, and instead I ended up spending more than I would have at one of the better known Menudo restaurants in the area. Very frustrating, and now I know better! On a scale of 1-10, I rate the food a 4.5. I won't be back. read more

Today I got the rubens burrito with shredded beef, smothered Xmas style! It was MASSIVE but omg so delicious. I love coming here because Ruben himself is the man behind the grill and it's nice to see your food being prepared by someone with so much passion for food. I really enjoyed the burrito, it was the perfect amount of spice and I feel like I got the flavor of every ingredient in each bite! Super filling and affordable! I've eaten at Rubens three times so far and I've had a delightful experience every time. The first time was the trio of spicy chicken tacos. Yum! The second was the huevos divorcionades. Yum x2! Very good New Mexican food. I had there red chile, beef enchiladas. The chile is spicy and had a good taste. The beer had a good flavor. Add some sour cream on top and it was perfect. The pinto beans and rice were also very good. Overall a very good and authentic dish. Come and eat here. read more

Food is decent, I'll need to try a few other dishes to see if it gets better. I ate the Chile Colorado breakfast and a small bowl of Menudo. Beans are good and they give plenty of tortillas, which is often overlooked at many restaurants. To give them a little credit they were super busy only one cook and one server and she was running everywhere. My drink order was wrong, and by how busy she was I made sure to order everything I wanted all at once because I knew I wasn't going to see her again. I was right. So being from California living close enough to Mexico to go there at least once a month for many years, I just assumed Mexican food was like all the taco shops I went to in Cali and in Mexico. I moved to New Mexico and something was missing. Everything was New Mexican which don't get me wrong I am also a regular at El Modelo. It is not the actual Mexican food that I need to scratch that itch of my cravings when I just want someone to cook better than me to eat it . Then I got a job next door to him and didn't even see he was there until a couple employees complimented his cooking and I am a foodie and checked it out and it was the best thing ever. I was like this is home and what I have been looking for for years and was addicted. After I started going there for awhile I told the cashier how his food felt like where I was from and she got Ruben to come talk to me and it turns out he was actually the manager of a restaurant my family and I used to go to when I was way younger and it was when he was the manager. I just decided to write this post to thank him because I was eating his soup he made extra special for me for dinner after a rough day and it was delicious. The food always feels like home for me and I have never gotten anything that was not delicious and they honestly treat you like family every time you go there. There food is love and they warm personalities are love. I hope you all enjoy them. And they have no idea I would actually write this for them. I am not the best at reviewing restaurants. Randomly stopped here because I was in the area. Very homey inside. Small business but the menu was actually well covered. I ordered lunch plate and small menudo. The food portion was very generous which I greatly appreciated It was fresh made and tasted good. It was lunch time so was a tad busy because there was lot of pickup order coming through. I sat there for over 15 minutes before I got my meal but it was worth it. I would definitely come back to try more items on the menu. Staff was friendly as well. Who do you suppose invented the nacho? And what were they thinking? Was it an accident? Maybe they were carrying a whole slew of plates with various ingredients on them and suddenly tripped and fell. This is Mexican food at its best. We've been here twice and both times everything was fresh and excellent. This not New Mexican food. It is Mexican. The server is friendly and outgoing. The menu has some of my favorites. Their green chile stew is not Hatch chile but just as I've had in Mexico with pork stewed with tomatillos, spices, and chile. The salsa with their chips is fresh and flavorful. Their taquitos are rolled to order. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food in a simple environment or to take away, Ruben's should suit your needs. read more

To start, if you're looking for good New Mexican this is not the place. I got the tamale plate and overall it was mid, tamales had cubed meat which is odd for a tamale and the rice was super mid for Spanish rice. My biggest complaint is the chile because I made it very clear on the phone to SMOTHERRR my tamales bc I'm a native New Mexican and that's how it be. The girl wasn't rude or anything when I asked but she had a duh attitude when I said to smother it so I thought they understood me. But lo and behold when I got my food I needed way more damn chile so that annoyed me bc I thought she understood me. But the service is great the staff I encountered was super nice and I do think this is good Mexican food but if you're looking for a good red chile meal, don't go here. read more

I love this place! HOWEVER . I recently went on Thursday (7-7-22) and received the WORST service I have ever experienced, from the guy working the cashier counter. I called in my order and he immediately was rude and impatient. I figured he might be having a bad so I tried to not make it worse. When I went inside to get my food, I stood at the counter for almost 2 min before I was greeted by a cook working in the back. Finally , guy at counter very rudely says "what's up?" . I pay for my order, signed the check and left the a guy a $2.00 tip , which I thought was pretty generous considering how rude he was. He looks at the check , laughs at it , slams the drawer closed, bags up my food, and leaves it on the counter for 3 min, and then finally says "YOUR FOOD'S RIGHT HERE BRO" Ruben ! I've met you before . You're such a nice man and your restaurant is so amazing. I will always come back , BUT , please don't just let anyone help you run your business. I drive all the way out to El Modelo to get menudo and chicarone burritos last week,to see Closed signs up. I did a quick search to find authentic menudo close by and this place popped up. I read some good reviews so I drove up there. I ordered a large menudo and one chicharrone burrito. It was a total of around $12 or so. Friendly cashier, small ,cozy restaurant with an older Hispanic man in the back making the food for the orders. I had a drive back to RR area so I broke open the burrito. At first bite I was convinced I would be back.They were real, cooked ,crispy chicharonea, delicious beans and a great mile-high green Chile sauce. DELICIOUS! Later on I had some menudo and it was amazing. Cooked perfectly, not too greasy, and some good spice to it. This place is going to be my regular stop now. read more

Ruben's is a hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant and grill. Before I tell you why I love this place, I need to get something off my chest. There is a difference between Mexican food and New Mexican food. If you're not sure of the difference, ask Gustavo Arellano (¡Ask a Mexican!). New Mexican Cuisine is, for the most part, chile based. If you go to a genuine Mexican restaurant and ask for Red or Green, you may get an unfriendly stare from the staff. And you should. As I started this review, I searched Yelp for Mexican Restaurants in order to see how many are listed here and which are considered the best. The Mexican search listed hundreds of places, nany of which served only New Mexican food, not Mexican. The converse search listed hundreds of places, many of which serve just Mexican food. Sadie's is NOT Mexican food. And Zacatecas is NOT New Mexican. Be careful what you ask Yelp for. Too much cross-categorization. Ruben's place is a little gem. He has a passion for food, and prepares some of the best tasting examples of his native food that you will find in ABQ. My Menudo was masterfully done --second only to that served at El Paragua in Española.Red, spicy, and loaded with perfectly cooked tripe. Delicious. The Dazzler's Ceviche was fresh tasting with plenty of lime juice to give it the right amount of acidity. Darren's Shredded Beef Tacos were small, four to the plate, and downright delicious. He asked for them to be gently spiced, and they were. The beef was tender, tasty, and slightly moist -- perfectly cooked. The accompanying rice was flavorful, and the beans were among the very best I have had anywhere. hey rank right up there with those at Mary & Tito's. On my next visit, I will ask Ruben to make me a bran and chicharron burrito. The horchata is excellent. If you are craving REAL Mexican, you need to try this place. Ruben knows what he is doing. You will love his dishes. And if you are craving REAL New Mexican, you can't beat Mary & Tito's, my absolute favorite place in all of New Mexico. read more

This restaurant doesn't honor its hours. Very unfortunate. I first went Halloween evening around 530 hunting for tamales. They were closed. I thought that was a little strange. Halloween isn't exactly a national holiday, after all. Ended up at Ortega's on Wyoming which is New Mexican, not Mexican, but the people who work there are all so genuinely kind! Also, Ortega's tamales are awesome, BTW and only 2$ each. Came back to Ruben's for lunch about a week later. Had a torta which was very good and made me want to come back for Mexican breakfast as they serve macchaca with eggs; very rare finds in Albuquerque. When I handed the lady who runs the restaurant my credit card I told her I was going to go fetch my jacket and stand in the sunshine right outside the window a minute or two to warm up after drinking 3 iced teas and sitting under the A/C had begun making me shiver. But she told me "I can't do let you do that!" and handed me back my card as though I had handed her a fake credit card after having enjoyed her torta, told her I planned to come back for breakfast and now I'm being treated like I'm going to dine and dash. Pretty offensive but I was willing to give a second chance for decent Mexican breakfast. After I was charged I noticed an additional fee for having used a card, she didn't warn me about. (I would have used cash.) I told my pregnant fiancée I finally found a decent Mexican stand that serves proper breakfast and managed to get her out of the house to try on Thursday. We arrived at 910AM. They supposedly open at 9. But there was no one in the restaurant even getting ready. It was clear they were hours from opening. I drove an extra few miles to Ferderico's which is always reliable and was late to my meeting as a result of my breakfast getting screwed up. Thought I'd give one more chance so I came in Saturday morning and arrived at 1010AM (70 minutes after their "opening"), and the lady who basically accused me of being a thief earlier in the week, is now telling my hungry baby making fiancée and me that her cook isn't here and she doesn't know where he is. I asked her if that's why she didn't open on Thursday but she didn't answer. Anyway I'm very disappointed as I had high hopes for this restaurant. Hopefully they can get their sh*t together. I'd certainly like to be able to have at least one decent Mexican breakfast place near me. But even if the food is great, aside from being spoken to so rudely, it's closed in 3/4 visits? That 75%! Massive, MASSIVE fail. WHERE'S THE WORK ETHIC?!? Seriously, the restaurant scene in this entire state SUCKS! Albuquerque restaurants wouldn't survive three weeks where I come from. ----------- UPDATE: I returned today hoping to change my review. I pulled up at 10:03AM. The OPEN sign in the window was illuminated this time. I parked, got out and started walking to the door when the women who runs it came out to say "we're closed. The chef isn't here." The food was great, the service was a bit sheisty. I don't mind a "hole in the wall" experience when finish because that can normally be indicative of intimate, family-like treatment upon visiting but this just wasn't the case. The waitress that helped us was busy but I felt she let that get the best of her. She seemed impatient when we were ordering and bothered when we asked questions about the menu, she was not attentive enough to the point where I had to retrieve my own utensils and napkins and she just over all did not impress us which is kind of a shame considering I really enjoyed my Fiesta Salad.
