Was planning on going to Jen Chi, but the wait was too long so we came here. And happy that we did. The first time, we got the twice cooked pork with leeks which was very good, and the Kung Pao chicken also very good. I had ordered it mildly spicy and as my waitress put it on the table she noted that it looked like it was extra spicy and indeed it was. She took it back immediately and got a new batch which was perfect. It was very good as well. The egg rolls are very very tasty and the spicy oil dumplings are delicious. We came back 2 weeks later because we liked it so much. This time we got the BLACK PEPPER BEEF and let me tell you this was AMAZING . The beef is so tender and generous and it's almost addictively good and not too peppery at all. I also wanted some baby bok choy but I don't like mushrooms which is how it is on the menu and the waitress suggested the bok choy with garlic sauce and it was just delicious, lovely and light and complimented the protein dishes very well. We got the garlic chicken and it as well was good but the black pepper beef won hands down. My son both times got chicken fried rice which which was he loved. Both times the chef was a bit too generous with the oil in his wok, but I didn't care because everything is so delicious I'll forgive that. And actually it probably added to it's yumminess. The bathrooms and the restaurant is clean, the wait staff is friendly, and the place isn't crazy busy or crowded like Jen Chi. They do charge an extra dollar for your side of white rice and a $1.50 for your side of fried rice but I think a lot of places do that these days so I'll forgive that too because their prices are pretty good overall. I think I found my new Chinese restaurant in Chinatown in Richardson. After you eat you have to swing by 85 c Bakery a few store down for a salted caramel latte ( or one of many teas, bobas, and smoothies like the Pina colada) and one of their wonderful baked pastries and desserts. We were charged for rice with entrees, which I know is a growing practice but really puts me off a place because it's so essential (would you charge extra for rice at Chipotle? For the bread on your sandwich? It's the same idea). The indoor decor is cute/classy with Chinese elements. Not sure if there was a change in chefs but today's meal was horrendous. I didn't get a photo due to the pure shock and disgust but I ordered my typical order and found a piece of steel wool in my food. This is absolutely irresponsible of the chef and their kitchen regulation. It is absolutely unacceptable as steel wool ingested could have major gastrointestinal implications. The owner must be careful to emphasize not using steel wool to clean pots that will be used prior to make food. I will not be back and greatly disappointed in the regulation of food safety in this place. They did cook me a new bowl of my order but after seeing the piece of steel wool I could not eat it. Old lady apologized profusely but did claim that "accidents happen." This is not an accident but a major flaw in preparation. I liked how both the tops and bottoms are fried. The dipping sauce complemented everything nicely. Unfortunately though, there wasn't much filling inside the buns, but the small amount that Was there was delicious. Black pepper beef - extremely tender and flavorful pieces of beef. It comes sizzling on a hot plate. My mom and I couldn't have enough; it was that good!! Shrimp Lo Mein - I liked the choice of noodle that was used and the flavor was great. I would pick a different protein next time just because the shrimps were small and I didn't taste the wok-hei. Fish in tofu pot w/ cayenne - this is my mother's favorite dish to order at Sichuan restaurants. The tofu and fish are both delightfully tender. We have an adventurous lunch group at work and Royal Sichuan was our latest stop. This place is definitely one you should do family style. We ordered too much food as usual and it was about $17/person. Pan fried bun - 3/5 stars. This a Shanghai dish and the ones I've had there are far better. The bun texture was a bit heavy and the pork filling wasn't anything special. I probably wouldn't order this one again. Sliced Fish with Rattan Pepper - I had to didn't know what a Rattan pepper was but it's just a Sichuan pepper. This dish is tilapia chunks in a light broth with mushrooms and plenty of peppercorns. Healthy and light! Be warned that the pepper will affect your sense of taste and this is normal! Eggplant with Garlic Sauce - 4.5/5 stars. This dish is always good anywhere I've gotten it and Royal Sichuan is no exception. Mapo Tofu - 4/5 stars. I've had more flavorful renditions elsewhere but still good. I think it could have benefitted from more spice/heat. Spicy Dumplings - 3.5/5. I thought the wrappers could have been more tender. They ate more like reheated leftover dumplings. We went here with friends for a Saturday night dinner and I must say the food experience was really disappointing. I ordered vegetable egg rolls and they had an overwhelmingly strong flavor of old oil. They were probably the worst egg rolls I ever had. I had the garlic chicken and it was supposed to be spicy but it was not spicy in the least, and there was only a hint of garlic flavor. The wife's black bean beef was not good quality as most of the beef had lots of gristle. The steamed dumplings, which we had hoped would be a starter, were served about three-quarters of the meal and were mediocre at best. We were not served rice and had to ask for it and it came with the dumplings when we had already been eating the entrees for a while. The only good dish was lamb with cumin, ordered by the other couple. My wife loves lamb and loved this dish. I am SO obsessed with this place! We go here every weekend for their #N12 soup. Yes, I know it's been 10,000 degrees outside forever, but I don't care. Give me their hot, spicy soup on Mars, and I'll be happy! There really is no better place for the menudo soup with hand-drawn noodles. The flavor is second to none. I've been a huge fan of Sichuan King but I immediately realized the merger have caused the price of every single item in the menu to go up considerably. Perhaps it's also because of covid? Maybe. I've always had an issue with paying extra just for rice there but now the price doesn't seem to be justified even more. I would contend that the food taste is still great. However for average of $15 per dinner dish, I expected a bit more food. Their very delicious sauces are too saucy. It actually doesn't keep the food hot enough for long enough when there's too much sauce. That said, I still recommend the establishment since it is pretty authentic Chinese food. Located in Richardson's Chinatown strip mall, this restaurant doesn't stand out from the dark tinted windows on the outside. Once inside, I found the interior very inviting because of the lovely carved wood decor, well-placed red lanterns, and Chinese wall art and framed photography. Seating varied between large round tables with lazy susans that can serve groups and smaller tables and booths that can seat four or fewer. Come here for a late lunch to avoid the crowd. Before 2:30 pm, the lunch menu prices are available and the quality and quantity of food for the price is a smoking deal! My waitress asked me if I wanted ice with my water. I said it wasn't necessary, so I ended up with lukewarm tap water which I found odd. I guess I expected cold water, just no ice. LOL! Thankfully my refill included some ice and the water was much cooler. Soup came with my meal to my surprise. It was quite flavorful and steaming hot! Cold water would have been nice at this point to cool off my tongue and the roof of my mouth. My General's Chicken plate was loaded with big chunky white pieces of chicken that were lightly breaded with a fluffy fried covering. The flavor was not quite what I was hoping for because the spices had not had time to blend. The little red peppers were mostly whole and rubbery when chewed, and not hot and spicy at all. There were a few pieces of broccoli florets, bell pepper slices and onions bits. I always wish for more veggies to balance out the meat, but an 85/15 ratio of meat to veggies is probably what most people expect. A bowl of white rice was included with my meal. My appetizer showed up as I was finishing my chicken lunch. I thought perhaps the waitress had forgotten or confused my request for egg rolls with soup, but I guess the delay was cooking them. They were delicious. The best part was paying less than $11 for all of this food and getting in and out of the restaurant in a very short time. The waitresses were quick to seat, serve and check me out. They do accept credit cards, but not American Express. I would definitely consider coming here again for lunch, especially since the prices and portions are so good. read more
