Oriental Express I recently stopped by Oriental Express while visiting family in the area. This restaurant has been a part of the Richardson community for over 40 years, and I actually grew up coming here. Although I no longer live nearby and hadn't visited in years, I decided to return for a bit of nostalgia. I ordered the orange chicken with rice and would rate the food a 7/10. It was good and decent overall -- flavorful and satisfying for a quick meal. The establishment itself is very spacious and clearly has a long history in the community. However, I do believe there is room for improvement when it comes to upkeep and sanitation. There were a few tables with dishes that had not yet been cleared, and from the ordering area, some used dishes were visible off to the side. While I understand it's a long-standing, family-owned business and I respect that, maintaining a cleaner and more polished dining environment would greatly enhance the overall experience. I'm sharing this feedback with respect, as places like this carry history and memories for many of us who grew up in the area. With a little more attention to cleanliness and presentation, it could truly match the quality of the food and its long-standing reputation in the community. read more

Been coming to this place for over 20 YEARS! Amazing little no frills place tucked away in a strip center, but oh the food has always been delicious, reasonably priced and prepared fresh and hot straight from the wok. They also have the BEST eggrolls around. read more

The portions were fair for the price point. I mean it's still expensive compared to some places I've frequented but generally the trend is around $12-16 dollar mark nowadays for entrees outside the lunch special in just about any of these Americanized Chinese restaurants. The place definitely does strike me as not super clean. There were no customers inside as well. I didn't venture anywhere else but the cashier's area but I get the impression I probably wouldn't want to. All that being said though. I'll come back. I was pleasantly surprised with this little hole in the wall! I tried because a friend of mine told me he had tried them and really liked them and thought I might too. He was correct! The prices are right, just 8.25 for a huge (big enough for 2 meals) serving of Almond Chicken, served with fried rice and an egg roll. Was it the absolute best Chinese food I have had? A co-worker invited me to lunch at Oriental Express, which ironically is just a few minutes from work. I really like trying various Asian restaurants because every location makes things differently. I didn't really have any expectations but was hoping the food would be worth coming back for & fortunately it was not. I ordered their Mongolian beef daily special, which came up to about $7.86 I believe. It took maybe 10 mins to receive the food which wasn't bad but they call your name then you have to walk up to pick-up your order, personally I think they should bring it to your table. You could be in deep conversation & not here your order being called so it could just sit there or someone else can pick it up. I prefer fried rice with vegetables -- theirs had none & it didn't even taste like fried rice but I love rice period. The Mongolian beef was okay, I only ate about half mainly because I was hungry & had already paid. Would I recommend it? No, period. read more

We tried Oriental Express tonight since the Chinese place we usually go to is a little expensive. I hate to say it but I am just not impressed. We ordered chicken fried rice, egg drop soup, and orange chicken. The rice wasn't cooked long enough, some of it was a little hard. The egg drop soup was okay, but towards the end I found weird-colored bits of egg in there that made me lose my appetite. My boyfriend said the orange chicken was just alright. I'm disappointed. For the portions, the price is worth it. They have a combo, for $7.25, you can get a choice of meat, rice, and a egg roll. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken. It was bland. No flavor and it wasn't even sweet. The rice had no seasoning. Chicken was red and you could tell it was full of dye. I have this place a shot due to the reviews. Just happened to come across this place so thought we'd give it a try. Can't go wrong with Chinese food really, but this place missed the mark on basic items. The chickens fried rice was super salty, they used way too much soy sauce and it tasted slightly burnt. The sweet and sour chicken was the opposite. I walked in and it was pretty empty but that makes sense because of the whole pandemic thing going on right now. Lady was nice and I got my food and left after she tied it for me to be able to carry it out. I ordered chicken chow mein and got watery vegetables and chicken with some "noodles" tossed onto it that tasted like hard bread sticks. It's so watery and the chicken is like a sponge. Awful, this is NOT what chow mein looks like and you can't change my mind. My boyfriend got beef and broccoli and broccoli is hard, not cooked all the way and watery as well. Fried rice tasted like nothing. Boyfriend says the beef is dry somehow despite it sitting in some kind of brown water. Not going back, 2 strs because the lady was nice. Otherwise, AWFUL. read more

I won't be ordering from here again. None of the food matched what I thought I was getting. The hot and sour soup was neither hot nor sour. Just a bland taste. The sweet and sour pork had pieces of chicken in it and the Mandarin Hot & Spicy was sweet and not spicy at all. I could barely finish a serving because it was so sweet. I also get fried noodles with my soup at every Chinese place I've ordered from. Not here though. And do they give you fortune cookies? No on that one too. Sadly disappointed in this restaurant. We ordered dinner for take out. The food was ready on time and still hot when it got home. Consensus was that all the food lacked flavor/seasoning. Sweet and sour chicken didn't taste like sweet and sour at all, and the chicken was dry. Crab rangoon was only cream cheese inside. Egg rolls were decent and crispy. Egg drop soup was ok, but had an odd texture. Lo mein was bland tasting and had a rubbery smell, ultimately inedible. Covid has certainly put a strain on this restaurant. I've been going here for roughly 30 years and business is hurting. Most of the high-tech businesses in the surrounding office parks are empty as people work from home. These people used to fill this place a lunchtime on weekdays, but now it's like a ghost town. They used to have a full kitchen staff but now it's just the owner and a couple of family members. It really hurts to see what has happened to this family business after seeing it successful for so many years. I mainly stick with the Mongolian beef, spicy fried chicken, and the pork with garlic sauce. The food is the same as ever, but everything else has changed thanks to the covid panic that has destroyed so many small businesses. I wish them the best of luck. read more

Came here for lunch on a weekend and was not disappointed! The quality of the food was great; I ordered the vegetable fried rice (most of the fried rice options are only $6.75) which came out in a timely manner and tasted great. The servers were also all very friendly. This place also provides a lot of online ordering choices, which makes it easy if you are in a hurry. The owners put a lot of effort into making sure this place runs smoothly. Would definitely return! read more

I wasn't feeling well so just wanted some soup. Hot and sour soup always makes it better. My hot and sour soup contained shrimp. How does that happen? I ordered a large and all the shrimp was at the bottom. Were leftover whatever poured back in the soup pot?? I also ordered vegetable fried rice to have the next day. The cabbage overwhelmed the dish, there was one broccoli stalk, one baby corn and chicken. I ordered vegetable. And it wasn't a lot of chicken so couldn't confuse it with chicken fried rice, so again, did they pour leftovers in the rice pot? 1/2 the soup eaten (what I did eat was good) and no rice. Everything here was amazing! It's a little and hidden shop, but they serve amazing food with great prices + amazing proportions. The family that owns it is super sweet and generous. Came to Oriental Express for takeout tonight and was pleasantly surprise how good the food and service were. Came by around 8:30 and got the sesame chicken w/ fried rice (7.25$) and the spicy fried chicken (6.75$). Both dishes comes with an egg roll and fried wonton. The food took less than 5 mins to cook and tasted pretty good. The portion size was decent for the price and they give you a lot of fried rice or more like white rice with seasoning sauce. I like to commend them for using chicken breast for their chicken that tasted more quality than the other Chinese restaurants. The waitress/owner at the counter were extremely friendly and nice. The food came out super quick and the prices are great. What else can you ask for? read more

Is there anything lower than 1 star? I was looking forward to eating here and was excited since they had 4 stars. Unfortunately, the fried rice that I requested to not have eggs in didn't have any thing but rice. The fried wonton taste like it was sitting all day (stale). The sweet n sour chicken was the worse, the crust of the chicken taste like paste and the chicken was hard as if it was sitting out uncovered for hours. I was very dissatisfied that I wasted money on this horrible, inedible meal. Please don't eat here until they change how they treat their customers. read more

OK so I ordered this delivered - first of all there was no chow mein in my chicken chow mein, the fried rice I ordered was not fried nor did it have any anything in it but rice, so no egg and no veggies. Added to that no soy sauce and no fortune cookie despite my asking for the soy sauce specifically. I should've known better than to order without seeing pictures of the food :-( The only positive was that the soup was hot when it got here and I did get everything I ordered despite the poor quality. read more

I would never have stopped in if a friend hadn't taken me there based on tucked away in a strip mall. Walk up - order your food - when it is ready they call your number. Absolutely not authentic Chinese food. Please argue with me on it. I have given this place at least 6 tries, and I am not coming back. This spot is beyond American-ized Chinese food. I kindly asked them if they use brown rice or if they steam their rice differently because there's a tan tint to it, but they told me it's just normal steamed rice. Weird, cause "normal steamed rice" is white, but okay. The fried wontons are drenched in oil and somehow manage to be a little soggy in certain areas. The beef in any dish is very fatty and the chicken is really dry and almost hard. My only positive comment relating to food would be quantity. The plates are big enough for both lunch and dinner. The only thing keeping this establishment away from a 1 star review is the service. Service is quick and friendly. read more

Place was pretty good. Went here for the first time and gotten the chicken and broccoli with plain fried rice. It was not bad at all. I liked it. Pretty good amount of food on their take out trays. Update 3 weeks later. I have moved though tge whole menu. Heaven. The shrimp tastes like shrimp. Beef good texture. Cheese cheese wonton warm is my friday treat I allow myself to have. The vegetables in every dish you can taste what tgey should. Me: I've been coming here for 20 years... Waiter: But sir, we've only been open for 10. Ok, seriously, I've been coming here for over 10 years. This is good Chinese food fast. Is it 100% authentic? Maybe not, but the food is consistent and very good. You can see the cooks spewing flames on the woks in the back and cutting all the meat/veggies by hand. It is family owned (I've seen their children grow before my eyes) and they are very nice people. If you dine in, the meal comes with soup, eggroll, fried wonton,rice (fried or steamed), and your entree. Very large portions, take-out excludes the soup. They have a decent selection of entrees but I always have Mongolian beef, Hunan Chicken and Shrimp, or Chicken with Asparagus. I haven't been here for lunch since 1999 when I interned down the street, but it was jam packed. 7-Eleven is next door so you can buy some Pepto for all the food just you ate.... read more

This place is definitely one of my go-to places for lunch. It is very reasonable and quick. I love the chicken and asparagus! Don't be surprised when the fried rice (that comes with the dish) does not resemble the traditional fried rice but it is very tasty. The lunch specials come with the main dish, fried rice, egg roll, and a fried wonton. For what you pay, it is a great deal. You can order steamed brown rice for an additional $0.50. I have never been there for dinner so I cannot attest to the prices but I'm sure the food/quality is the same as lunch. Go and enjoy this great little Chinese Food treasure. read more

The "five stars" is for their stringbean pork/chicken. I have not even moved on to any other menu items because I love this dish so much. My coworkers tipped me off to this place a few months ago, and it's become an almost weekly lunchtime favorite.
