This hotpot restaurant is as authentic as they come. For those not familiar with hot pot, it's the Chinese equivalent of fondue, where you cook the food in the broth. Everyone got to pick their own style of broth. However, be careful what you wish for. I asked for the "spicy" soup broth, and it was incredibly spicy, like, inedible to most people spicy. The last time I had hot pot this spicy was in Chongqing, China (southwest portion of China known for their crazy spicy food) in 2001. I will say, the menu is kind of overwhelming to look at because it's column after column, category after category, of a la carte choices to make. We went with the meats and seafood sampler platters, plus a few extra items. My kids were able to try tripe (cow stomach) and intestines and both loved it. The wait staff was super friendly and was very diligent with checking to see if we needed more water and broth to cook with. They even have a serving cart robot that carries out trays of food. It literally walks around on its own. I know my husband said the next time I can convince him to go, he would get the mild spicy. The owner came to me instantly and loudly asked me why I tipped less than 10%, I said the price does not match what you charged me. He said the menu price is for cash only, they add 3% card fee on their bill for each item. He said the statement was on the menu, which I didn't not find at all. He continued to ask me to explain why I tipped less than 15%, which is their standard. I said you should charge mandatory 15% tip if that is your expectation, or let customers know they will be blamed if they tipped less than 15%. Customers will choose whether to come beforehand. He said he doesn't care where I go to eat. In Google reviews, the owner responded to another customer's review and literally said" if you are poor, just stay home or go somewhere else to eat". I got the mushroom soup base which seemed to be a clear broth filled with 3 different mushrooms. I added sesame paste for extra creaminess. With crab sticks, fish ball, quail egg, Napa cabbage and instant noodles, the hot pot was so delicious and filling! We also ordered fried chicken wings on the side. This review is primarily for the Hot Pot, but they also serve a wide variety of Szechuan food that you can order as well. Soup bases They have a large selection of hot pot bases but my bf and I decided to get both the P1 Special Butter Base (Hot) and the P8 Pork Tripe Chicken Soup Base. The spicy base was great and had real heat to it for those looking for it. The pork broth had a lot of flavor as well and pairs well with vegetables. As a bonus, the P8 soup also came with extra pieces of meat from boiling the soup base Sauces They have about 12-15 options for add ins for your dipping sauce. This includes the majority of the staple sauces such as soy sauce, oyster sauce, chili oil, vinegar, and sesame paste as well as ingredients like garlic, sesame seed, cilantro, chili peppers, green onion, chicken seasoning, and sugar. I believe they provide raw eggs by request if that is something you'd like as well. Proteins Royal Pot provides a few different protein selections both plain and marinated. For raw meats, I'd recommend the A1 house spicy beef, the R1 Ribeye, the R3 Fresh Young Lamb, and the R4 Premium US beef. It can be hard to differentiate between the many beef options so you may have to ask the staff for help there. They have other items like M1 Beef Tripes, M11 Quail Eggs, M8 Luncheon Meat, and M10 Little Sausage were also good. We don't usually get a lot of meatballs but their A6 Handmade Shrimp Meatballs are good and fresh. Vegetables There isn't a lot to write here but their vegetable selection is wide, with good quality and generous portion sizes. Desserts I was surprised to find that they had Brown Sugar Jelly and i usually order this whenever I go. It's very reminiscent of the ones I had in Szechuan growing up. Our first post-COVID trip back to Royal Pot. As of this writing, masks are required (when entering the restaurant, and when using the restroom). All staff we saw were also wearing masks. We showed our waitress photos of our vaccine cards; not sure if she would have asked if we hadn't. It's been around two years since we've eaten at Royal Pot, and the food quality is very good, as always. I ordered the 牛油锅 (spicy soup for my pot), and it had a nice kick. My wife ordered 小熊锅 (regular soup with a cute little bear inside; sadly, he melted later but that's by design). Today we tried the 麻辣牛肉 (spicy beef), which was excellent! Apart from that we got our usual lineup of beef, cabbage, wood ear, sliced potatoes, 干豆腐 (kind of like a sheet of tofu, very yummy), and some shrimp and fish balls. The sauce bar is closed for now (COVID) but our waitress was cool. She brought us all the different sauce components so we could make our own. Anyway, I love this place. Kind of pricey, but you won't leave hungry. Also, word to the wise: Royal Pot is the only hotpot restaurant I've found in Michigan that uses individual pots (rather than a shared pot). read more

After we found our first choice was closed for renovations, my family and I ended up at Royal Pot over the holiday break. I had never done hot pot before and was really excited to give it a try. The tables have a pot per seat, so everyone can get their own broth base, which is nice. I ordered the butter bear (mild) and my boyfriend got the basic broth (hot). You mark off which items you want on a sheet and everything is brought out family style, so it's good if you have a large group to share more things. We got: -enoki -seafood meatball -beef meatball -seaweed -three kinds of noodles -shrimp dumplings -chicken -beef -napa cabbage -imitation crab stick My broth was spicier than I expected for "mild" but it wasn't overpoweringly hot. I didn't like the whole peppercorns as they kept getting caught in some of the items like the enoki and cabbage so I would randomly bite down on a whole peppercorn, not my favorite. The broth itself really didn't have a ton of flavor, and the butter bear made it way too greasy. It was cute, though! I would definitely get a different broth next time. The sauce bar is where it's at for adding flavor to your items. My favorites were the beef meatball, thick udon noodles, and the shrimp dumplings. I would absolutely get those again. Service was hit or miss; our server seemed bored and wasn't very attentive, but the guy who brought us our broth and food items was smiley and nice. Other staff came around at least two or three times during our meal to see if anyone wanted a refill in their pots. It's definitely a more relaxed type of meal that takes a bit more time. They also didn't explain to us anything about how to work the heat elements (like what number to put it at) or how long to cook any of the items, so we just guessed and everything seemed okay. Overall I'm glad I finally got to try hot pot but I think I like Korean BBQ more when it comes to Asian food you cook at your table. I've loved the basic hot pots at Royal Pot for a solid year. Our last time there we saw a definite difference in the selection. The broths have spicy butter animals involved now (that you watch dissolve as your soup base warms - warning! The Bear option is considered "milder" than the Pig, and it was delicious lava). And they offer a lot more variety! Portions seem smaller, but the quality and presentation were quite nice. The sauce bar has also expanded. The entire staff was new to us. And the man always manning the host stand was not there. I asked if they had gotten a new owner, and our waitress said the chef was new. Large interior. Clean restaurant and bathrooms. It's located in a strip of other stores. Parking in front of the restaurant can be a little tight, but there's plenty of parking nearby. I will be upfront, we had been to this place before but came to this place specifically this time because we read an article about a robot. "We" this time was me, my SO, another family member and 2 children. We called ahead and asking if we needed a reservation for 5. I suspect we were not understood but they said no and that there was no-one there. By the time we got there, we were told their larger table was taken but they could add a chair to the end of a smaller table. This worked out _for us_ because we had 2 children and one needed a high chair anyway but consider if you were an adult party of 5 it would be awkward (perhaps cozy?). Before we seated, we were asked which menu we wanted. We were confused and the seater "patiently" explained there were two menus, hot pot and not hot pot. That was the entire explaination given. When I guess we still looked confused (unsure), they gave us both menus and seated us. Our table (for 4) setup had 4 sunken areas where soup (broth) would later be placed. These were essentially live burners but were off. The controls were on the sides of the table around an adults stomach area. The kids proceeded to play with the sunken areas and ask what the controls were for. This IMO was a big red flag, this place is not kid friendly. The non-hot pot menu was a "normal" flip through the pages with names and prices and decide what you want. They also have asian (assuming Chinese) characters for each meal. Much of it is *not* standard asian fare and there are not pictures for everything. I have heard (and experienced) that good asian restaurants have predominately asian people there but this did not strike me as catering to people who did not know what they wanted or didn't want to ask a bunch of questions. I ordered Sesame Chicken. It was some of the most generic overpriced asian food I have gotten in my life. Honestly, I have had better asian food from a food court. It wasn't bad and it was filling but it wasn't good nor do I think it was worth it cost wise. For the kids, besides wanting to see the robot, they enjoy noodles. However, maybe because of the menu, we couldn't find any. No lo mein, no chow fun. So we asked and the waiter said "we have fried rice". We ordered chicken fried rice for her but were table around shocked they have no noodle dishes. Note we later saw (for some reason) in the dessert section of the menu they did have dandan noodles listed. So maybe the server was just bad/ignorant or seems for the second time we were not understood. Anyway, the fried rice was also very generic. We also ordered both the spring rolls and the veggie rolls. Interestingly, these showed up after my food (at least, maybe also the kids rice). The spring rolls were burnt. The veggie rolls were fine. I was left wondering if someone made 1/2 then put under a heater while making the other 1/2 and thus got charred/overdone. Both were decent (despite the burnt - I'm a BBQ guy so have a decent tolerance:P) and came with a sweet sauce (maybe duck sauce). Both my SO and other family member did order hot pot. I didn't look carefully but the menu appeared to be "sushi style" where you check with you want on a paper menu with the provided pen and then they read it back and that's what you get. I am not 100% sure all they ordered however, they got a tomato based broth (were surprised it was sweet) and another (normal?) one. They got a wide noodle and a thin noodle (see they do have noodles, maybe they assume people who come to the restaurant for them are going to order soup, so having them on the normal menu is dumb? or don't have a diverse chef?). Anyway, let's take a step back before I go further. Earlier I inferred our stuff arrived not together which was true. My chicken, the kids rice, the appetizers and the soup all arrived at different times. So by the time 3 dishes arrived, we had not seen the robot at all. The kids had asked us about it 2-3 times. So our family member asked and it was pointed out and said it would come. It *did* "deliver" the soup course but we were left wondering if we hadn't said anything if it would have come out at all. I suspect on later monitoring that it only "delivered" soup and dessert courses but who knows. It may be their whimsy. I have also seen robots at Dennys and sometimes charging so could have been that. The robot itself just had food on it and was trailed by a waiter who actually removed the food. It did have a cute cat face on it it. We were given no instructions on the burner use. I was told the soup was good tho we were heavily kid wrangling at this point because of the shift meal delivery. I was told there was a bar you could get sauces and maybe more sides. See other reviews for that, the one before mine seemed decent. We were not asked if we wanted dessert (despite another review raving about it) but were given the check at a timely manner. Be warned on the spiciness levels - even as an Asian American who has had hotpot from around the country (Bay Area, Seattle, Boston, New York), this was one of the spicier hotpot experiences I've had (but still very delicious!) Overall, the staff was very attentive and we were very happy with the COVID-19 precautions the restaurant was taking, including social distancing, enforcing mask-wearing when not at the tables, hand sanitizer at each table, etc. We were also pleasantly surprised at the availability of sauces and seasonings. Although they've closed their sauce bar due to the pandemic, the waiter brought us one of each of the sauces/seasonings we wanted, and we ended up with 15+ small bowls to mix our own preferred sauces. For those who are intimidated by this dining experience- They give you a paper menu to check off all the things you want. Each table just shares all the accoutrements- but you get your own little pot of broth, which is a little confusing. There were 5 of us and we each ordered a different one- our waitress had no trouble keeping track of who had what. You then order the meat and vegetables you like. The portions are enough for the whole table to share, but you can always ask how much to order if unsure. The back of the menu has sauces. There are a bunch of components yo make your own sauce, or you can just order some of their sauces. We did both- we ordered the four house sauces, and also a side of tahini, green onion, and chili oil for us to individually doctor our own sauces. We had a very nice experience today with a group of five. Two days ago it was snowing, so my friends and I decided to go for a hot pot . I ordered the tomato pot because I can't eat spicy food and my friend ordered the spicy pot, being an authentic sichuan and hot pot restaurant, he thought the royal pot had a high level of spiciness and my friend was very happy with it. I was really expecting more from this place. I was excited when I first saw this place was opening during my frequent business travels to Lansing. I came back after a break and was finally excited to try it. Maybe my expectations were too high, or I'm too used to how hotpot restaurants work in the east coast. I came out feeling overall full but not necessarily satisfied. First off, no combination options? If I'm by myself (which I usually am on business trips), the way things Came out a la carte is difficult. If I want a little veggie, or a little meat, it wasn't an option. The virtual menu on a tablet was cool, but hard to navigate. Especially as a dual speaker of Chinese and English (and personally I flip the two to understand what I want from the menu) I felt like I couldn't figure out what I wanted. In asking the staff for assistance they helped mostly with tech of the tablet but didn't help translate or explain some of the menu items. This led to me getting a broth that I didn't want, which for hotpot makes a whole difference to the whole meal. Pricing was strange and it didn't feel like this was a spot that accommodates for one person. Definitely recommend coming with a group and not a party of one, since I ended up spending $40 or so on myself just because I wanted variety. Even if I had one type of meat and one type of veggies itself it would've been $20. I would highly recommend offering combination platters here. On a positive note, I do recognize the food is highly authentic Chinese. With the Chinese menu i could see that these were unique flavors typically not offered on the daily. Since there aren't many hotpot restaurants in the area, that's nice to know. Though I came out stuffed (because again, not recommended for party of one probably), I wasn't sure if I came out satisfied with the meal overall.
