It's always fun to stop by old favorites whenever we're in East Lansing. Omi Sushi was one of my favorite places when I was in college, and I'm happy that it's still open. I ordered takeout from this spot countless times while living in EL. Nate and I were in the area and stopped in for a late lunch on a Sunday recently. We were seated right away - I loved that they had vases of flowers on the tables. The blue color scheme is soothing, and I like the cozy bench seating. The menu has expanded a ton since I was there last! They have a bar now, with beer, wine, and sake, as well as lots of typical sushi restaurant offerings. I noticed they also have tabletop shabu shabu, which I'd love to try in the future. Omi Sushi is the first place I ever tried a crunch munch roll, which is still one of my favorite sushi rolls to this day. We got one of those, a spicy California roll, spicy scallop roll, and an order of the soft shell crab karaage, which I'd never seen before. Our meal also came with a miso soup and house salad. The soft shell crab karaage came out quickly. The dish consisted of a deep fried soft shell crab and a little bit of shredded cabbage, a squirt of kewpie mayo, and a lemon slice. I was expecting it to be crispier - it was a little soggy and soft, but the flavor was nice and the taste of the crab was prominent. I wouldn't order this again but it was fun to try. The soup and salad were your basic versions of these sushi restaurant staples. The rolls were all presented nicely. I did notice that the crunch munch roll is smaller than I remember but it's still very tasty, with tempura shrimp, crab salad, poached shrimp on top and eel sauce. The fish all tasted fresh, the rice was cooked well, and the bill was reasonable. Our server was great and very kind. It has a kind of cafeteria type atmosphere. It's clean and very quaint. The service was spot on very fast and friendly dishes removed fast. The food was extremely good. It has been years since I last visited Omi. Once a great place to enjoy sushi, it did not disappoint me much with the same. However, their teriyaki chicken is not something I would order again. It was overcooked and, overall, mediocre. While not in the picture (was in a hurry to eat the first dish full of delicious sushi), their rolls were as good as I remembered. I had ordered a you pick 3 consisting of spicy tuna, spicy salmon and Philadelphia rolls. However, you usually can't (shouldn't) go wrong with these choices. Since traveling to Lansing for work recently, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of interesting food options around where I'm staying in East Lansing. I tried Omi Sushi for the first time two nights ago, since I was in the mood for sushi and this one of the at least three well-reviewed sushi places on Yelp was the closest to me. I walked in on a weekday evening and put in my takeout order with the host who was nice. The food didn't take long to prepare, which I appreciated, and it wasn't too crowded. I ended up ordering a house special roll, which varies in having 5-8 pieces. When I asked him how many pieces the omi maki roll had, he said five, and I think he saw my incredulous look before I could stop it, because he reassured me that they were fairly big pieces. You can decide for yourself in my photo, but it was actually an okay size for me. The omi maki roll has eel, cream cheese, and asparagus battered in tempura and deep fried with eel sauce. The rolls come with a salad or miso soup, and I opted for the salad in an effort to be somewhat healthy. Originally, I wanted to give a three star review because I was so disappointed in the salad. The omi maki roll is good especially if you like cream cheese, and it was an enjoyable dinner. The salad, however, was nowhere close to fresh, and the dressing tasted like watery oil. The dressing did nothing to spruce up the salad, and I couldn't force myself to eat it. I'll probably come back to Omi Sushi depending on how the other sushi places in East Lansing compare, or if I want some katsu, but I will probably skip the salad. But, I've been here a second time and gotten the maki 7 roll, which is yummy, and got the soup this time, which is definitely the move. Given how much joy this sushi place (and the fact that I still want to keep working my way through their sushi menu as well as their non-sushi items), I bumped my rating to 4 stars. The place was small but very cute. The tempura udon didn't have much flavor to it. Neither did the complimentary miso soup. The noodles have a nice chew and texture to it but the tempura shrimp was tiny & not like any other tempura shrimp i've had before. Would not recommend. I've eaten there three times in the last month, and the food seemed to be aligned with what the menu says. The food here is nothing less than very enjoyable to eat! I had the spicy tempura chicken, the spicy ramen and diablo sushi! All of which had unique aspects to them that you would not expect! The sushi incorporated rice paper, jalapeños and avocados. The spicy ramen added a diverse mixture of fish cakes, oysters, large shrimp, fried egg, and napa cabbage and the broth was spicy and delicious! Very creative presentations! Now, for a little bit of the downside. When I was first seated, I was there alone. So, I was seated near the back by the bathroom.. Asked to be moved and they didn't seem happy. I was moved to a table that was unstable. I had to put numerous things on the underside of the table so it would not topple over. The staff, initially, seemed a bit cold and annoyed with me. But, as the experience went on... They did warm up a bit and it all ended well. The food came out in a timely manner and as I said, it was not disappointing at all!! One of my favorite sushi places in east lansing! Besides the fact that it's smaller and doesn't have free parking, the food is soo satisfying. I've tried many of their different rolls, udon, and some different appetizers. This one eel roll was soo big it lasted as two meals for myself. I just stumbled upon this place while staying in East Lansing. I played it safe and got a spicy salmon roll, California roll & edamame. I was pleasantly surprised at how fresh the sushi was. Usually you can't tell sushi is fresh until you bite into it. You could see the freshness when you opened it. It was really good! The avocado was literally perfect in my California roll. They were not stingy with the salmon in the spicy salmon roll. My only complaint is the edamame didn't have salt on it and there was none in the bag. I've been out here for work for a few weeks and have been staying at the Marriott and wanted some legit Japanese food. I asked the front desk and they recommended Omi sushi. I'm originally from Hawaii and live in California so my standards are a bit high. So when I say it's legit, it's legit. Here's why: 1) The sushi is not filled with rice and while they do have rolls with mayo and crispy stuff to appease the non-authentic roll crowd, their sushi is good. The pieces of fish they give are good quality and cuts and the tako is done well, not chewy. 2) I like amaebi, aka 'sweet shrimp'. You know a Japanese restaurant in Michigan is good when they fry the head. And do a good job! 3) Their bento is delicious and on point. You need to dine in for it though. I always get the salmon teriyaki bento. It comes with a California roll, but you can upgrade it to just a salmon roll for $1. The agedashi is perfect. Not crazy fried, the tofu skin is thin and mochi like. The tempura is also perfectly fried and flavored. Also the salad dressing on the salad is just like what Japanese restaurants should serve - ginger :) 4) Their music. While I've dined in there, they played M-Flo (throwback whhaaat) and Utada. I loved the shades of blue on the interior; it made me feel calm. We ordered their 3 for $12 lunch combo. Sushi here is good, I think my sweet potato one could have been slightly more cooked, they also didn't have non-imitation crab rolls so we got salmon and tuna. It was okay, I mean I guess they were also the basic rolls. Nothing to write much about but still it was decent amount of food for the price, and it tasted good. My friends fried katsu was very delicious- thinly sliced and juicy. The other time I had gotten food I got the Japanese vegetable udon which is a very earthy taste and the curry udon which I definitely recommend for that standard yellow curry taste. Stopped in to Omi Sushi with my boyfriend last week and enjoyed our experience. It has been several years since I've eaten here, and the menu is much better than I remember. We loved everything we ordered, and were surprised that the 'green monster' roll was our favorite of them all. It is was definitely in my top two in the area for that type of roll. A few of the rolls that had spicy crab salad in, or on top of, it tasted pretty similar, but were good. I'm giving them four stars for this visit because our service was great, the presentation was nice, our rolls came with a soup or salad (and the salad was pretty good sized), and the sushi rolls were filling and flavorful. We got the Special California roll, Philadelphia roll, shrimp avocado cucumber roll, and a smoked salmón nigiri. It was all absolutely amazing.
