After a night out this place is like an oasis. Great service, atmosphere and food all around. My pals and I sat in a clean booth and enjoyed our sesame chicken combos, the portions were large and our stomachs (and hearts) were full by the end of the night. Do not be dithered by the appearance or old reviews. China Flavor is under new local family ownership, the same family who owned the beloved Golden Wok restaurant (Now Trader Joe's). This is some of the best Chinese Dim-sum small plates in the Lansing area at an amazing price. The Hong Kong tea made with whole tea leaves is addictive. 100% transparency here! The first time we placed an order, it came a little rough, but we ordered late at night right after everywhere else shut down and they were getting slammed! I called and let them know that the food wasn't exactly what we were expecting and slightly over cooked. The manager (or owner, I am not sure) made things extremely easy, gave us free meal tickets attached to my phone number. Let me tell you what, they knocked the replacement meal out of the park today, it was cooked damn near to perfection! The sweet and sour chicken had a beautifully golden crisp fry to it, and the chicken inside was incredibly juicy and HOTTT! The shrimp lo mein was fantastic as well! Noodles were cooked fantastically and the flavors were extremely well balanced! The owner while I was placing my order told me not to tip as he was going to take care of our order himself and he would take care of everything. When he delivered it himself I couldn't help it, I had to tip him. That was honestly a wonderful experience, and an excellent way to run their business, if you have a chance to order from here DO IT! The bf and I decided to try this newly opened Chinese place. Me and the bf went around 7 or 8p and I would suggest going when it's bright outside due to the sketchy area and it's metered parking. When we arrived the owner greeted us and sat us at a booth. He later came out and offered us complimentary soup which was very nice of him. I got the hot and sour soup which cost more but he ended up still giving me and the bf free soups. The soup was prob the best hot and sour soups I've tasted in lansing. Food: the owner actually suggested the spicy chicken and the beef hor fun which they were both delicious. We also decided on general tso's just to try it and that was good also. This place was awful. We were there for 15 minutes before being acknowledged by a lady that was sitting front booth cleaning out her wallet. There was another lady with a colorful personality dancing around the place like she owned it, but it was really just a place she hangs out when board. I can not recommend this restaurant during the pandemic. Tonight, I called and was hung up on and then it took another two hours of calls before finding out that I needed to use Grubhub to make an order delivery. After making my order through Grubhub, I then suffered through a three (3) hour wait. The app never gave me real time updates as promised. At 10:15, the app said it was 9:12 and my meal was finally being made. And to add insult to injury to get my meal I had to personally pick-up my order. When calling the restaurant about the status of my order they did not know when it would arrive. They even admitted they did not know who was delivering the order. The best they could say was a Grubhub driver had my meal. The Grubhub app stated that the restaurant delivered with their own drivers. All this was a truly sad and miserable experience for a restaurant I once truly enjoyed. It bothers me that to post the one star rating to simply get the rating posted. read more

Pepper chicken was average, 80% green peppers and onions, 20% chicken with little flavor. Took a while to arrive too, was quoted 50 to 65 minutes, ended up taking 80. Arguably the best Chinese dining experience in the area. Tea and bottled water are provided on the house, as well as soup (hot and sour or egg drop), usually served as soon as you sit down. Sometimes they also bring a plate of dumplings if the management is feeling generous. I have had the beef with broccoli and also the egg foo young. Egg foo young at China Flavor is the best I've had anywhere--it is served on a huge saucer and the dressing is superb--delicate, lightly sweet, and slightly sour. The last time I dined there, they also brought out ice cream and cubed watermelon as a palette cleanser after the meal (as well as the obligatory fortune cookie). The atmosphere is quaint and domestic, all the dishes are served on real porcelain plates and bowls, never styrofoam. The staff is extremely generous and friendly; almost over the top. I also really appreciate that they have an authentic Chinese menu IN ENGLISH. So many other places have an authentic menu only in Chinese, so I only see international guests getting the fancy dishes. Not the case at China Flavor--anyone can order anything! (Note: I have not ordered from the authentic menu yet because I'm way too scared). read more

Nice friendly people......quick service and AWESOME FOOD! What more could you ask for. Restaurant was clean....which in this area is hard to find. We parked in the back and walked up the sidewalk and they had the door propped open....I looked in to check out the kitchen....it was clean! That's a HUGE plus. The only thing I could complain about would be the musty smell as you walk in......but it's an old building and I am sure it has a really bad basement that floods. In the future, I will probably just do take out since musty smells bug me......but it won't stop me from ordering the food. read more

Four stars is dead on in my opinion - well above-average bordering excellent Chinese food but the four stars is fully factored in the service (including friendly staff/owner and delicious treats served while waiting for takeout!) and clean space that it's hard to believe was Lamai Thaai (delish but admit it--- it was dirty). If your an Eastsider or live downtown this should be considered for your go-to for Chinese takeout. Love the Kung pao squid and the hot and sour soup. BUT THE NOODLES. THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE LO MEIN!! They aren't even Lo Mein noodles. They are some soggy Udon junk that tastes like it's been stored in a can for a year in chicken broth. What you get at China flavor is a nice taste of the local area, which I can only accurately and shamefully describe as "Ghettolicious," which isn't even a real word... China Flavor is one of the only places open at 1:30 in the lansing area so we decided to get it delivered and try it out on 4/20. Absolutely ruined my favorite holiday. The Lo Main was literally just soup noodles, the fried rice was easily a 25 cent pack of nasty brown rice from Meijer, and the chicken was hardly chicken, super stringy and even had some sharp pieces in it. BUT what sets this restaurant apart from all other Chinese restaurants in the area is the outstanding customer service! The owners are so nice and outgoing. They give me a drink and side of fresh watermelon on the house every time I go! They are open until 2am which is perfect for 3rd shifters like myself.
