First time at this establishment. Tried the mapo tofu, one of my favorites, plus some hot sour soup so I could report back when I got home, as we're still on the hunt for the best, as our previous favorite closed some time ago. The mapo tofu was good. I opted for no rice, which worked out fine. Requesting it be extra spicy did not yield results, but they provided some chili sauce on the side to liven it up. Their version doesn't go heavy on the peas, unlike some other places. Also included carrots, green onions and mushrooms. The sauce was notable. The hot sour soup was about average. It came to the table lukewarm, but had a decent flavor. I would get it again, but there are better. Friendly host, service was unrushed but efficient. Food was tasty. However, when we walked in to be seated we were told that they close at NINE. Now I want to point out we didn't come in at 8:55. We came in at 8:05.... The server then told us to sit down and he would be back shortly to get our orders. He couldn't pay attention long enough to each person to get their order and we had to repeat ourselves multiple times for each person. In fact after he submitted the order he had to come out and clarify an order. He then gave us our bill and three minutes later he came by and asked if he could get the payment. This was at 8:45 mind you. So I tip according to the service I receive so I should have stiffed him but my wife is nicer than me but as he looked at the tip he shook his head in disgust. They never called me when my order was ready. I finally just went down there. 6 min away. It was just sitting there. The Mongolian beef was like carrot soup . 5 pieces of tiny beef is all you get. Do not order this. Go to the Mandarin in bountiful instead. the Vegetables Delight was veggies in a corn starch and water mixture. No flavor added . Awful. We had to throw it out . Lemon chicken was like chicken nuggets with a tiny hint of lemon flavor . Kung Pou Chicken was large pieces of veggies with large pieces of chicken in sauce . VERY UNHAPPY AND DISAPPOINTED!!! I ordered ordered $135 for News Year Eve ordered 3 chow mein dlatge dishes and also ordered extra of the noodles. It was a rather large order and they had it all in bags tied up two bags in a large box and another large bag to carry separate. I got home to 3 hungry kids and 5 adults everyone started dishing up the kids and then the adults started and I realized I didn't get my chow neon noodles so I quickly called and told them and that my son would swing by on his way to grab them. He ran in and they informed him that he had to bring back all the food so they could see that they missed the noodles. I called them again and they informed me that their policy is that we do have to bring all our food back in order to get the noodle. I let them know we had already dished before noticing no noodles missing . She insisted that I had to bring the food back. I said you want me to dump it off plates and bring it in. She repeated that I had to bring in all the food. I told her I'd be calling her manager . I hung up . She called back and said her manager would not be available for 2-3 hours. It's your typical Chinese restaurant with traditional Americanized Chinese food. One thing I noticed was the restaurant was very clean and bright. The young girl working the counter was very friendly and helpful with answering my questions and taking my order. I ordered to go: Orange chicken, walnut shrimp (give you the sauce on the side which made it better than having them soaked in the sweet sauce), Cream cheese one-tons, 3 egg rolls and a small hot & sour soup. I live in the area, but haven't visited the restaurant for over four years . Recently I decided to give it another try. I discovered it is now under new ownership and the food is much better. Certainly the best of the Chinese places I've tried in the Layton. Since then I've been back four times, trying different dishes each visit. I haven't been disappointed yet. Consistently good food. I do not know what in the Sam Hill (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Hill_(euphemism)?wprov=sfti1) is happening at Royal Jade. 10 minutes on hold. 10. We timed it. We kept holding it as a joke, but after ten minutes, the joke ended, and we hung up and called again. Someone answered and took our pick-up order. We have always enjoyed their food. We aren't always The Mandarin for our Chinese; this is more like your greasy spoon Chinese. They have great Hot and Sour soup. We know we order a bit because we like the leftovers, and our kiddo likes the appetizers. So, the hubs went to pick up our Friday Night comfort food while we tried to pick out a movie. It all seems reasonable as they go over the order with him. He asks for hot mustard as they did not mention that it was included with other condiments. The gentleman then says he will have to open the charge again because he will charge us for two packets of hot mustard. They wanted to charge for a couple of packets of hot mustard when he had just purchased over $60 of food and a tip for packing it up. The hubs declines and leaves. The fact they wanted to charge for mustarsbeomes even more irksome as when we unpack the food, we have at least 12 packages of soy sauce, which we did not ask for nor do we use. 10 fortune cookies, no utensils or napkins. One container with the beef and broccoli is cracked and leaking, but that happens, and it would have been nice to have napkins to clean it up. Hot and sour soup is yummy, and the child has absconded to their set up in the family room with a container of ham fried rice with minimal vegetables and even less ham. They have also grabbed as many delicious gyoza and cream cheese wontons as they can, only to take a couple more off the shared plate. I then go to plate the chicken chow mein. Digging through the packets of fortune cookies and soy sauce, I found they had again failed to include the crispy noodles. They "forget" noodles so often with our Royal Jade orders I have taken to purchasing the crispy noodles to have on hand. The lack of noodles annoys me as they will not provide hot mustard and then "forget" to include them. I am done. Their portions continually get smaller and smaller. Like the ham fried rice, their protein dishes lack protein. The beef and broccoli have very little meat (and I understand that prices have increased not only for the customers but also for the restaurants and increased in paying workers). Yet when did the price for broccoli, carrots, water chestnuts, and cabbage become so expensive you could not include more than a small handful in a $15 dish to feed a family of 3-5. Unless I am sick, we are looking for another great greasy spoon Chinese restaurant, and then we may return to Royal Jade for the Hot and Sour soup. read more

This may be the worst Chinese food I've ever tasted. I certainly was very disappointed, I ordered 5 dishes, and 2 of the 5 were spoiled food, It certain it was NOT FRESH. The other 3 dishes were too saucy and the meat was really off. The other disappointing factor was the packaging, it was poor and spilled everywhere in the bag. I've only been here a couple times, but my BF has been here more over the years. He said the food had gone up and down, and today was he worst he's had. The General Chicken was not spicy at all and the menu stated. It tasted more like orange chicken. We also ordered the Cashew Chicken which was on a plate overflowing with sauce. It had dripped all over the side of the plate and was dripping on the table when we got it, it looked like slop. No kidding. The lo mein was just like spaghetti in sauce with few veggies that were overcooked. The people were really nice, it's just unfortunate that the food didn't look or taste good. Neither the cook or the waitress cared about the presentation of the food, and unfortunately the cook couldn't care less about the taste. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more

Generally pretty good, but I was really disappointed in the seafood/chicken soup. Nothing but a very few pieces of fake "krab" and about 5 small scallops.
