The Mapo Tofu was less than bland, I couldn't add enough soy sauce and salt to make this beige dish taste like anything. Just awful. The first thing I do when I move to a new area is find the closest decent Chinese food. No lie. Chinese food is the easy and somewhat healthy go-to in my diet, and I almost always do it as take out. Royal Jade has been my Chinese purveyor of record for the past two years since moving a few blocks from it, though I've eaten their food for over five years. Are they transcendent in the world of Asian cuisine? No. They are solid Chinese with a few dishes that are notably above average. Their Egg Foo Young of various flavors is one such dish. The dark, complex sauce is not your mother's egg foo gravy. There are times when it tastes on the verge of burned, but it never crosses that line. I love it. Also notable is the Szechaun Chicken with Garlic Sauce. The strong garlic sauce flavors the generous portion of chicken in a highly pleasant manner. The heat in this dish has, over the many time that I've ordered it, varied a bit. I know that for some, having the same dish taste the same way every time is paramount, but I find the potential to be surprised rather nice. I've never had it show up so hot that it wasn't absolutely delicious. To address concerns of other reviews: greasy? Interesting. If I've not had food from Royal Jade at least three dozen times, I would be surprised. If you told me it was over fifty, I wouldn't be shocked either. I can honestly say that I've not once among all of those visits found anything to be greasy and, in fact, find the food to go rather easy on the oil compared to other Chinese food I've had locally. Maybe I've just been extraordinarily lucky, but I do note that they have an award on the wall behind the count which declares them to be among the 100 Most Healthy Restaurants in America. I haven't bothered to ask how they came about the honor, but it does speak to some desire to be at least somewhat cognizant of the oil that goes into the food. Anyway, it isn't perfection, but I don't really require that from a Chinese food place with inexpensive prices like these. I want competent with occasional flashes of above average, and that is what Royal Jade offers. I can't wait to have last night's leftovers for lunch today. read more

I've never seen a "Chinese" restaurant screw up Beef and Broccoli this bad before. It reminded me of Spaghettios, both because it was bland but also because it had a tomato sauce base rather than soy sauce. The Moo Goo Gai Pan was a little better--the sauce was completely bland and flavorless but some of the ingredients had good flavor. It was filling and not horrible, but definitely not worth how much they charged for it. The same dishes from the freezer would have been better, but sadly the power is out in half the city so I couldn't have reheated it, which is why I tried Royal Jade at all. read more

I love this place! They have so many options and the ones I've tried are delicious! (I'm not a spicy-kind of person, so don't ask me about those.) I particularly love the lemon chicken. This place is thee absolute worst! We had ordered two dinner meals, egg drop soup and an order of the cheese ragoon. ALL of our food was cold and one of our dinner meals was the wrong thing completely and didn't have any rice either. We noticed once we got home and called immediately to inform them that our order was wrong. The waitress was so incredibly disrespectful, rude and overall horrible. She argued with us and told us that we must be lying because it's her job to double check everything. She told us she would only give us our correct food if we brought in the incorrect meal. We said we would do no such thing because of corona and the fact that they could easily give that dish to another unsuspecting customer. My mother went to pick up the correct dish and was greeted with complete disrespect. It blows my mind that the waitress was arguing with a customer with other customers in the restaurant. I live very close by and have been a few times. I took my parents and they enjoyed it, too. We normally get stir fry dishes, soup, and appetizers. Crab Rangoon is delish. Stir fries kind of all taste the same but are tasty. Ham rice is very good. Egg drop soup has corn, very tasty, the 4 year old loves it. Fried shrimp is just ok. The General chicken was delicious. My friends and I went here for dinner tonight and although we got a discount, it was not worth the money. I have eaten here multiple times and have never had this bad of service. To start, we were there for and hour and fifteen minutes before we go any food. We ordered dumplings and I found a piece of hair while eating them, not to mention they were cold. Our food came, everything was cold and we had the wrong order of chicken, we ordered orange chicken and got sweet and sour. The waitresses excuse was she "heard us say sweet and sour" when I know that I said orange chicken. Not to mention that we were never checked on during our hour of waiting and our drinks weren't filled either. I am disappointed and disgusted by the food. Lemon sauce seemed fake, the fried rice tasted day-old, and the "beef" in the broccoli beef was a combination of gristle and beef-flavored fat. My dad and I have been eating at the Royal Jade since I was little. We love their Hot & Sour Soup - definitely the best I've ever tried! The owner knows us and remembers our orders every time, even if it's been a year since we have been in. We have never had a bad meal or poor service. Uggg had a good experience here a few months ago. Got the sweet and sour chicken dinner both times. The first time it was fresh and crisp and loved the veggies cooked in it. But tonight it was soggy and treated undercooked. Even had a wierd cat pee smell to it when I drive home. This used to be a place I would go to at least 5 times a month. Until it was sold and all the food became disgusting. My family loved the chicken Lo mien and egg rolls. Now the Lo mien is dripping in its own sauce and the egg rolls taste as though they were frozen and then reheated. It's time to update my original review. This afternoon, my wife and I, on the spur of the moment, decided to walk over to the Royal Jade for a quick lunch. We've eaten there many times over the past couple of years and we've tried most of the items on the lunch and dinner menus. Without exception it has all been very good to excellent and the portions were HUGE! Today was no different - we were seated and our orders taken very quickly, the food was brought to our table promptly. I was thinking about how good my fried shrimp and chicken chow mein was when my wife mentioned that this was the best almond chicken that she had ever eaten anywhere. I finally had to agree with her, I honestly don't think that I've ever eaten chinese food that was any better. I don't know why I've fought giving this place 5 stars, perhaps it's because it's not a big fancy $$$ restaurant. But the food (and service) is excellent and ranks right up there with the best chinese food I've ever eaten anywhere. Try it, I'm sure you'll like it. We sure do. read more

This place is fantastic if you love enormous portions of Americanized Chinese food. The food is actually quite fresh and of good quality. No MSG. The taste is suited more to down home folk and not those well traveled with a taste for the exotic. I guess what I'm really trying to say without being judgemental about it is that the taste is on the bland side, but that actually really suits some people fine. I just prefer more exotic fare with more spice and flair. Notwithstanding, I love their Tiny Chicken. If has a very tasty sweet and spicy flavor, even if the spice is very tame. Perhaps they would kick it up a bit upon request. They are very very nice nice people, which makes it worthwhile to support their business. They do a very good job and if my taste buds didn't crave so much excitement, I'd eat here often. I think they are right on target for what most Americans would want when ordering Chinese food! Service is horrendous! Staff was more concerned with what sounded like watching TV in the back, than to actually check on their customers. Food was sub-par at best. When we finally did have someone check on us to see how we liked our food, the woman acted angry that I wasn't happy with the way my food tasted. She argued with me about what I ordered, then asked me briskly what else I wanted. To that, I told her I didn't want anything else. She charged me for my meal, even though I ate no more than 3 bites. We've had good luck getting take out here before but this past week we got Orange beef and Mongolian beef and it was the worse beef I've ever had, every bite was very chewy and lots of gristle. The flavor was good but I don't think we'll get take out here anymore. On the positive side, the proportions were good but don't get anything with beef. I ordered Curry chicken and it's nothing but a few small pieces of chicken that they didn't even bother to cut and giant chunks of bell pepper, carrot slices and onions that had started to go bad. The sauce was really watered down and had no salt and almost no curry flavor. I could have grabbed a bag of frozen Chinese and it would be better than this. The wonton soup was a large and had four wonton in it and was some kind of broth again without any flavor. I am left feeling hungry and disappointed. Never eating here again!
