Turns out I was too low in all 4 tires, and when I mentioned that the dashboard light is always on, which makes it hard to know if there really is too little pressure, he got the machine to test the sensors in the tires and confirmed that they are all working. And all of this without charging me at all. Really great to have a neighborhood place like this.

I had driven on a flat, and if you're unaware, this can rapidly degrade the quality of your drive. You can wear a CB joint, your axel, or your rotor, if I recall, and too much wear on these can do immense damage to your car's future. I had replaced two of my tires and still felt a wobble. How could it be the tires, I thought? This is why College Street Motors' experience comes into play. The car might as well be a multi-piece orchestra, with brake drums, piston percussion, and wheel woodwinds. I don't intend to go over the top with this metaphor, because it sounds like a bunch of noise and shaking for me. The mechanic left me a very detailed note, describing how there was nothing more discernible than the loud noise coming from the tires I had yet to replace. No wobbling due to damage to other parts of the car. Plus, I believe they warranty their work, maybe I'm just thinking of my AAA membership. After my tires were replaced, I was relieved at how right they were. As internal combustion engine drivetrain cars are complex, so are electrical cars in their own way. It's a world I have yet to get into, or may never dig deep enough to really gain a foothold of experience. Luckily, there're mechanics just down the street for me that took only a bit of time to diagnose the problem, find a tire match for the ones I had just gotten new, and then both install and balance. I bet their experience pays dividends to other customers, too, who are hoping to make sense of a new problem with little labor and diagnostics. Thank you all, even the pickup with your front desk team was pleasant.

The man I met told me he had been working there for his family over 20 years, and it's hard to find a better local resource than this for the price of a small tip and your gas. The station was very accessible and neatly kept right before the heart of downtown Amherst. You can pull in from either direction--just know what side of your car has the gas cap! All in all, I would tell international travelers, locals, students, and people of all ages and walks of life to go here. I'm certain they'll make you feel welcome and answer your questions, even in the bitter cold. Again, for full service gas, the price is low so mind to tip your attendant, 10% is a good amount and fits the current era we live in. The days where a single dollar was a good gas station tip were at least 30 years ago. :)

Then called a place and while their service guys had already left, he did something that shocked me/ He HELPED! He went through the places I had been left out in the cold by - once is enough... but the Auto Angel urges me to give him 15-20 minutes and like an unlikely SUPER HERO, vowed to find me a much - MUCH needed place to put on my snow tires, without which it is likely I will not make it up into the hinterlands of Heath...and if I by some miracle, make it, I stand no chance of escaping to any semblance of civilization and basic needs for my two and four legged family. Can you believe I came back with to find my flat fixed within hours, and for less than a quarter of the price I expected? On a busy day where there were plenty of cars ahead of me and maintenance work closing the street beside Amherst Tire, they told me it'd be four hours for them to get to my car if they still had the time by the day's end. My expectations must have been so low, because I was more than willing to let my car sit there and slow leak its way to a repair by the morning. They mentioned their Early Bird program, too, if you had to drop your car off before they opened. (There's a mailbox with envelopes to fill out your information in, where you put your key in the envelope and seal it, then drop the envelope into a letter drop in the garage door.) I thought I might need to drop by in the morning. Two hours later, they had managed to get to my car. Two hours later, the slow leak was repaired, just needing a bit of driving to test the patching solution pumped into the car. I had estimated $200, thinking they'd be painfully testing where the leak was, doing some odd patching, removing whatever caused the leak.. I must have had an odd idea of repair since these folk only charged me for maybe an hour's worth of labor to repair the leak. The slow leak is gone, saving me the need of replacing two tires at a time! In a circumstance where they could have easily convinced me I needed more labor and more tires, they were a cost-effective solution, administered within hours on a busy day, and surprised me with how trustworthy they were. I hope you have a similar experience if you go, I am glad I was recommended here.

Gil's, a mom and pop auto shop, is run by Daniel and his staff. When I first visited for a routine oil change, I was seen and changed within an hour for an incredibly fair price. I wondered if they needed my filter in advance? Or my oil? Nope--they had those all ready. It was this kind of family and expertise that I wasn't used to for auto shops. So, when my tow driver knew Gil's and was ready to tow my broken down car to Gil's for a repair, I called them ahead of time to clear it. No problem, again. This was an incredible relief. The day I showed up to get my car back, I was excited. I was concerned about my battery needing a premiere level to get the same level of cold cranks--nope--they found a battery 2/3rds the price new and had the cold cranking power. I was concerned that there might be something wrong besides my battery--yep, they suspected the starter and had called me for approval in fixing it. All in all, I expected to spend a thousand in repair fees, but found them a surprising amount beneath my own estimate. Somehow, Gil's manages to do great repair at market level or below, and I believe that's because they rely on their car know-how and more affordable software systems. They were affected by the Cloudflare outage on Tues 18th, 2025, like most of the people in the world. They could still print out my receipt just fine, and I was on my way. Don't be put off by the struggles their customers go through. Their 3rd party's air pump worked if you had a card, the coin slot was jammed. I thought I saw a car with a transparent tarp out front one day, and it was gone the next. People must be coming and going here with all sorts of classic and new cars, and somehow Gil's manages to stay atop these changes. From what I know, they'll be moved out of this location soon, so keep an eye out for where they end up next. Thank you, Gil's, I'm glad to be a part of your car family on College Street, with other quality mechanics you've referred me to.
