My son is a student at UMass Amherst. He called me today, as his car was smoking and wasn't sure what to do. I looked up car repair places in the area. At first I directed him to Gil's as they had good reviews. He walked in and the the gentleman at Gil's said he couldn't look at it for a week. That's fine, it was after all, late on a Friday. My son asked for a recommendation as to where else he might suggest. He said nowhere, just here. What a jerk. My son saw auto express next door. The staff was extremely kind and told him it might be a 30 min wait or so. They checked the hoses for leaks and filled his coolant which was low. They didn't even charge him. I am a UMass student and I went to this place to get my car inspected. They failed my car for "bad caliper and brakes" and coincidentally failed the guy behind me for the exact same issue. They failed to give me a proper typed out estimate for repairs and had very poor communication about ordering the parts. There were multiple people cycling in and out of the front desk and none of them seemed to be in communication with each other about their customers and what was promised to them. Eventually I hounded them and got a quote for repairs and it was 800$! Huge scam. Mind you these brakes are 2 years old and I don't even drive everyday. When I asked them to email me the breakdown, they said they don't do that. So I had to write it down myself over the phone. Since I did not want to pay that much money, I went to Quabbin Service Center on Saturday and had a sweet old man do my inspection there again. Since I had out of state plates, they did a courtesy inspection for me. It was done and sorted within 10 mins. So all in all I ended up paying 70$ compared to 800$. Would highly highly recommend Quabbin service center for everyone instead of Auto Express!! read more

Showed up at 5:30pm to have my car inspected again after it failed the first time. Admittedly, I show up sort of late (30m left), and there are cars in front of me. I get told I can't be seen for the day. All that needed to be verified was that the plastic assembly around one of the lights had been replaced. I plead with "the manager" to help me out. I want to be very clear, I did not: shout, use expletives, or show aggressive behavior. I thought he was being unhelpful to the point of being unreasonable, so I said: "oh, come on" and that was the worst of it. He walks off, which I thought was rude, but whatever. I'm going to leave. And then for whatever reason, completely unprovoked, he shouts that he's going to call the cops. You know, like when you're 7 years old and think that's going to go over big? Baffling experience. Umass students BEWARE!!! My daughter is a Umass student and went in for a car inspection a couple of weeks ago. They failed the car saying that she needed 2 new tires, a new muffler and to replace the 3rd brake light. They offered to do all the repairs and replacements. I had her ask for a estimate on everything. She was literally handed a scrap of paper with handwritten figures totaling $1,200.00. When I called asking for a proper printed estimate, I was told that "Kelly" did not have the time to create one. Brought the car home, found a local repair shop that sells used tires, and they found the brake light at a junk yard for $75, and could not find anything wrong with the muffler...2 people looked at it!!! She just went back today, and the car passed...no problem with the muffler!!! We paid a total of $275.... Shout out to Bay Auto Springfield MA!! :) DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR TO AUTO EXPRESS AMHERST FOR AN INSPECTION!!! Would have given zero stars if that was possible. read more

UMASS parents tell your kids to go elsewhere. My son, a student at UMASS, brought his car here for its annual inspection. They told him he needed to replace a license plate light bulb and his windshield wipers. Somehow, the $35 inspection became a $113 bill. Preposterous. An additional $80 for a pair of windshield wipers and a lightbulb? I do most of my own auto work- the light bulb is a $3 part and the windshield wipers should've been at most $30 for the pair. Obviously, they were happy to take advantage of him. So, I'm happy to let everyone know this is a low integrity establishment and consumers should look elsewhere for their car repairs. read more

My son attends UMASS Amherst. They said he needed tires which he got. Came back and then said he needed exhaust work which would be about $200. He ended up coming home last night. I got under the car and heard nothing. He went to a shop near our house (for an addition $35) and got a sticker, no problem! They fail to realize that if it were not for the schools, they wouldn't even need more than one shop in this tiny town! Remember, you can shear sheep many times but you can only skin them once. I have generally been happy with the service here until this past week. I took my truck for an oil change and brake job (they told me at my previous oil change the brakes were getting thin). They charged me more than what they quoted, telling me "the guy who gave you that price didn't know your brakes were more expensive". That would have bugged me, but the guy next told me that he was only going to charge me "their cost" on my rotors and proceeded to charge me far more than their cost -- I know because when I confronted the owner he admitted it was more than their cost. I will also say that I had never met the guy at the counter on my previous visits, so maybe someone new is in charge. I won't go back. read more

Went in to get a ball joints and tie rod replaced on Dodge caliber. Called when it was getting worked on to up the price but also said they would throw in the alignment and oil change for free. Neither of them were ever done even though they told me also when paying that he "saw it personally getting the oil change". Went into Walmart a week letter and had to sign a waiver because the oil was so low & dirty. (never was done!) alignment wasn't done because the wheel shakes when it's turned all the way to the right. Don't have time to drive an hour back for low quality service. HORRIBLE! read more

We take our new used car in for inspection. We tell them that if they need our stuff removed from the back seat in order to check the seat belts, let us know and we'll do it. They never ask us, tell us the inspection is done and that the car inspection has failed because they couldn't check the rear seat belts. Now we're waiting and waiting for them to get the car back in so they can put a clean sticker on it. A total waste of our time. Poor customer service. No empathy, no thought to giving a darn about the customer. No "Sorry." We will never return here. read more

They pulled the popular "look how dirty your air filter is!" scam on me, obviously thinking because I'm a young woman I wouldn't know A) that that wasn't my air filter and B) I wouldn't know how to replace the $7 part myself (when they wanted something like $25 or $30). I could also overhear some of their mechanics discussing my features in Spanish. PRO TIP: If you're going to be a misogynistic creep, at least try to do it in a language that isn't the second most popular one in the United States. Auto Express is family-owned, and everyone I talked to was very nice and helpful. I needed a belt replaced and they did it quickly and inexpensively. Went here for the first time to get a state inspection. I walked in on a Monday at noon and the place was packed. There were 3-4 cars in line in front of me just to get their inspections done, not counting all the other cars getting worked on for other reasons at the same time. I did not at all expect to wait almost 2 HOURS to get my car back, for a procedure that's supposed to only take 10-15 minutes. Fortunately the waiting area was nice (aside from all the annoying people waiting who wanted to make awkward conversation), the free coffee was hot, and there was a big flat-screen TV to watch. Had I known it would have taken forever, I would have brought my laptop and used their free wi-fi, or walked to the gas station and bought some food or something. The front desk attendant was nowhere to be seen for the majority of that 2-hour wait. She hid out in the garage and took her time coming back in if someone came up to the front desk. The ladies' room had no toilet paper (had to steal some from the men's room), and considering how busy the front desk attendant was at not being at the front desk, she could have at least checked the restrooms from time to time. After how long I waited for my car, and the lack of really good service, I don't think I'll be coming back here for anything else. read more

Ive been going to this place for a couple of years for all my car needs, inspection, oil changes and other maintenance as well as one repair where the alternator needed to be replaced. I find them fair, honest and dependable. I usually go there straight after work and the wait has never been anything to complain about, I like that they are open extended hours on some days. They are quick and always do a good decent job. Im the biggest sceptic out there, specially when it comes to car stuff, but I trust them 100% with my car and know that they will give me a fair price. Had an inspection done here a few day ago. I gave it 3 stars because of the waiting room. Comfy chairs, big TV, good reading material, coffee and water. However.... do not get an inspection if your car is older than 3-4 years and may a problem. They will fail it make you buy a part and have them fix it. I took my 98 firebrid here a few years back and they said my high beam was out and couldnt let me leave unless it was fixed???? I ve had that car inspected with no high beam several times else where with no problem. my fault but still... They also scraped my moms car on the side of the garage backing it out. read more

I've been taking my cars here and a few other places over the years, and Auto Express is consistently excellent. They can be fast, but sometimes are slow, depending on the obvious things like how busy they are. However, I've never had them try to upsell me, or come back with a bogus list of things to be done, nor had them do a bunch of stuff without checking in with me first. And that's high on my list. Do what I ask, don't make stuff up, and check in if there really is an additional issue before making the decision as to what to do about it. I do not recommend you bring your car here unless you only need an oil change or an inspection. Anything more complicated and your likely to be returning to get them to do it right the second time. I've been to Auto Express about a dozen times since they opened a couple years ago. At first, they were great. Eager to help and relatively inexpensive. Since then their service has degraded. I purchased new tires last year and they wore down within a few months. They replaced them under warranty but only after I spent hours in their waiting room. Now the tires are worn down again and I have no recourse but to purchase tires from a more trusted establishment. Two sets of tires in less then 15,000 miles... I recently brought my car in for some front end work. I walked away $220 poorer and the front end is still not right. I returned today asking for them to take a look and after two hours in the waiting room they still hadn't gotten to my car. I left, never to return again. read more

When I asked about an itemized list, they referred me to a number of the company that owns them, as they "didn't have that information". The other company also could not give me an explanation as to why my bill was $35 more than my friend who had just gone last week for the same thing. Never using auto express again. read more

I don't recommend coming here for a vehicle inspection, or any other service for that matter. My car failed for a leaking exhaust and because the front tires were worn. They asked if I wanted a quote on the exhaust and, not being in a rush, I accepted. A few minutes later they had the quote ready - ~$1200 to replace the entire exhaust! We're talking catalytic converter, center tailpipe and the muffler. I was taken aback, stressing out about the prospect of having to drop that kind of cash to get my car back on the road. I stopped by College Street Motors for a second opinion. They got back to me promptly with a quote - ~$580 with labor (there was only one part that actually needed replacing!). I purchased two new front tires which brought the grand total to ~$800. I saved around $400 by having the repair done at College Street Motors, two new tires included. Brought it in for re-inspection and passed no problem. The ethics of the mechanics at Auto Express are highly suspect. They flat out tried to sell me a bunch of parts that didn't even need replacing. Additionally, my roommate had his oil changed here once last year. He brought his car in to his mechanic about a 1,000 miles later. Guess what he said? "This oil is filthy, when's the last time you had your oil changed?"Unbelievable! I wish he had told me before I went there for an inspection. Avoid this place like the plague. read more

Our family has taken 3 vehicles here for inspections in the past year. All three passed without any problems and the cars range in age from 14 years old to 2 years old. There was not a long wait, the waiting room was very nice and the people who work there were pleasant. As for the guy who said he took his car there a few years ago for inspection and had issues, I think he' s got the wrong place because this place has only been open about 2 years. Good place for quick repairs or for inspections and oil changes. They've done some repairs for me so that I would pass inspection, but for another problem, they weren't able to diagnose it. They seem to focus more on the smaller repairs associated with inspections, hence the name, and the fancy waiting room since most folks are done in half an hour or so. I've waited longer, even when it didn't seem that crowded. Bottom line, there's nothing particularly special about it, they don't stand out but I've never had anything real to complain about. read more

DO NOT ever go here for inspection: 1) Car #1 supposedly needed ball joints. I went to another inspection station that I trusted, paid the $35 again and passed; 2) Took my truck there because my regular mechanic was away, supposedly needed a new idler/pit-man arm, again went to another station where the mechanic and owner both laughed and passed me; 3) Car #3 had just passed inspection 40 days before being sold, and had been driven about 10 miles, the new owner was told that it needed lower control arms and tie rod ends. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. This seems to be a pretty consistent method at this place. read more

I've never had a bad experience. I dropped off my van for an AC recharge and a safety inspection. When I came to pick it up, they had done the AC recharge, but did an oil change instead of the inspection. They apologized for the mistake, took my car back in for the inspection right away, and 15 minutes later they were finished. They did not charge me for the inspection. read more
