Please don't go to this place for car inspection. In my experience, they look for very minor issues that are not truly safety-related. Last year, they failed my car because of old windshield wipers. I gave them another chance this year because they are close to my home, but they failed me again because of a loose front plate. I had it screwed back in and returned, but they still said it was not drilled properly. I then went to another inspection shop with the car in the exact same condition, and it passed without any issue. This place wasted my time and money. It feels like they are focused on finding small reasons to fail inspections and push minor repair fees. I will not be going back, and I'll be telling my family and friends to avoid this shop. read more

Soooo, I used to really love Pro-lube. However, I brought my vehicle in twice to have a bolt or clamp replaced on the heat shield and they couldn't fix it either time and finally told me to take it to the dealership to have the repair done correctly. I took time off from work both times I had Pro-lube "fix" it. I brought in the bill from the dealership and they said they would not reimburse me for my cost, nor did they offer me a discount on the oil change I brought my car in for today. I felt there was a verbal agreement they would fix my car both times I brought it in. They could have at least told me the second time it was beyond their level of expertise. I know they probably tried to make the repair, but feel conflicted about their decision. I had been a customer of theirs for years, but think it's time to look elsewhere. read more

I had been there for inspections a few times with no issue, but at the end of last winter my brakes were making noises, and I went there just to see if it was a serious/safety issue. They were urging me to replace all of my brakes because of rust and made it clear that they were dangerously rusted, and the bill would be just over $1,000. I couldn't believe it (and I didn't know how I'd afford it) so I went to two other places in town that I trust, and both of those other places assured me that it was surface-level rust that would wear off with enough use, and was not a safety concern in any way. (Also, unlike Prolube, they did not charge me to look at the brakes). And they were right- it hasn't been a safety problem since then. If I were in a very different tax bracket, I would talk to a lawyer about that level of deception that depends on the average person not knowing much about car maintenance; that's terrible business practice no matter which way you cut it. read more

I love this place. I've been coming here for close to 10 years for inspections, oil changes, and occasional mechanical work. Everyone has always treated me well and with respect. The prices for repairs are reasonable but the best part is they have yet to be late in returning my car. It's always been ready when promised. I highly recommend them. read more

We brought our van in for routine inspection after 3 yrs of no issues. Suddenly, we bring it to prolube and they fail it due to turn signal and "floor rot". They clearly don't know old cars so best to steer clear of this facility if you own a classic. Giving 2 stars instead of 1 as I do not have experience with other services. read more

I've used this garage for routine maintenance on my car, and like other reviewers, believed they were actually checking all of the things they say they check. (Fluids, air filter, etc.) However the day after my last oil change, my car's electrical system failed. I was towed and had to stay overnight out of state, however I was grateful to be alive. The mechanic would repaired my car said the air sensor malfunctioned and the air filter was very dirty, which was the likely culprit. This garage charges upwards of $100 for a synthetic oil change however now I am concerned about what else they've been missing. read more

I took my car there for an inspection sticker knowing already it would pass. It's on the newer side and I always take care of my vehicle. I dropped it off for the day and got a call a few hours later it was done. I picked it up at the dog the day. To my dismay I noticed my car had a crack in the windshield about 16 inches long. I thought this odd since it was not there before. Why the 5 star review then? I'm glad you asked. After talking with the owner John and both agreeing it was not there before John scheduled me an appointment the next day to have the windshield replace. He paid for it out of his own pocket based on the fact it happened on his property. He did not fight me on it he just took care of it. Though I feel horrible he had to pay for it. I respect his honesty not only as a business but as a person. Important to note this was most likely caused by a rock flying into it from a car driving by on the rode. Dissapointing that an oil change garage can not even remotely admit that one of their "technicians " could have cracked the oil filter cup housing causing it to crumble. My car is 2 years old... Of course it's just because the newer cars use plastic these days right...... No hint of remorse, they had to oder the new part and I was forced to rent a car for the day at my expense as well as pay the new part in addition to the car rental. Of course I was told they paid to have the part overnighted.to the shop. All I was told was it broke because they make cheap parts these days. So a part you have remove cracked and crumbled but it had to be only the parts fault. I paid for it and I'm sure they'll be happy that they lost a pretty regular customer over it. Even a hint of remorse rather than the No way its our fault response would of helped.. read more

This business will not work on cars more than 20 years old. This information is not available unless you reach a human and ask specifically. When you call, you hear a recording which states simply that you don't need an appointment for an oil change, but should just come on down during their business hours. Lots of potentially wasted time and fuel, and goodwill, there. There are of course, many well maintained cars on the road from pre 2002, and one way to keep those cars well maintained is to change the oil every 3000 miles or so at your local oil change center. Went to get oil changed, and was refused service. The man behind the counter was extremely rude, saying that they do not service any car more than 20 years old (mine is in excellent condition). I know of several vehicles more than 20 years old-- some as old as 40 years-- that have been serviced there, so I asked when the policy had changed. He identified himself as the owner and said that he could change the policy any time he wants. read more

DO NOT bring your car here. I brought it for multiple oil changes over the last year, which were almost $100 each and sold to me as mini tune-ups- saying that they check all the fluids along with the oil. However, just 6 weeks after an oil change that supposedly included this service my car overheated and the engine was destroyed due to a coolant leak that their technicians missed (the thermostat was not alerting me to the leak either). I was told they were checking all the fluids, but clearly they were either lying or completely incompetent. They also refused to refund my last oil change "tune up" and were extremely rude. Avoid taking your car here at all costs. They'll sell you an expensive oil change that doesn't include the extras they claim to include nor will they own up to their terrible service. read more

Pro lube performs Vehicle inspections After multiple experiences there I would not reccomend them for this. After failing our car for headlights due to a loose assembly They told me that they would not accept anything less than a full replacement of both assemblies. ($1000.00 repair)When I asked the Manager Andy about this he refused to provide any details of either the law or whether or not the aim was off or not. Andy made it very clear he would not negotiate or assist in the repair. The car was deemed unsafe and rejected. After reattaching and aiming the loose assembly for free at home I brought the car to another station, paid the 35 dollars and passed straight away. Do not go there! read more

I was looking to have my a/c system diagnosed. I do my own vehicle work, so if anything was in need of repair, I also wanted the Freon recovered. These are standard procedures. In other words, places will not turn you away because you want to do your own repairs. I called three places to get prices. The 1st one had been in biz 30+ years & specialized in a/c repair. That's all they did. $40.00 to diagnose & evacuate. The next was a more diverse repair shop, engine repair as well as a/c. $50.00 to diagnose & evacuate. I was floored when I called pro lube. I thought for sure we had our wires crossed. $125.00 to, yes, diagnose & evacuate! I asked if he was including recharge. Nope. I informed him of the other prices I had been given. His response involved words like "certified a/c tech" & "specialized equipment". Any pro working on a/c systems needs to be certified & in order to do it properly (legally), no matter who does it, it requires specialized equipment. The other thing is that the proper term is what I used in my opening paragraph, "recovery". Yes, it is evacuated, however they save the Freon & reuse it. The two places I 1st called are basically just charging for time. If I were to go back & they vacuumed & recharged, same price. $40.00 & 50.00, which is basically a charge for their time. This is the honest way to do it because they pay nothing for the Freon. Some folks go in with too much in the system. Some with not enough. It balances out. The other thing that keeping the cost at a fair price does, is discourages people from releasing the Freon themselves. No good for our already screwed up ozone. My recommendation? Steer clear or make sure you call around 1st. I am not stating price is everything. Obviously quality is important. But three times the price?, for a rather routine job at that, is literally highway robbery. Ask around. Check reviews. Join an online forum for your make & model. This is a great way to get advice. There is too much of this junk going on out there. I am grateful I started doing my own work four years ago (joining a forum & a botched pro repair job did it for me). It has opened my eyes up even more to the disparities like this & how much some of these businesses take advantage of consumers. read more

I drive a '96 Nissan small truck. Yes. it's an old truck. it also has under 80k miles, and has been well-maintained. I needed an oil change and stopped at the Northampton Pro-Lube. i was told "In and Out in under half an hour." Half an hour later the clerk person came out to tell me they didn't have a filter for my truck and needed to get one delivered. so I waited for that. then when the correct filter arrived, it took a conference of barely 20yo mechanics, peering under the hood and up from the bottom of the engine to figure out how to reattach my new oil filter. I politely asked if they wanted to talk to the person who has changed to oil on this truck most of its life. he would be happy to walk you through. the owner of the franchise was there and nearly went insane on me. I was just trying to be helpful about my car. there was no judgement. he didn't take it that way. I paid 60$ for a bad oil change that leaks. now I need to get that fixed IMMEDIATELY. which will cost me more money. So my bad. had I read the reviews first, I would have never wasted my time and money with this third rate auto service. read more

I took my vehicle into Prolube for an inspection sticker and was told that the vehicle failed because a tail light lens cracked and the bulb was out due to the wiring and plug being corroded and it would have to be replaced before it could pass. I was then given a "ballpark" figure of $150.00 I took my vehicle to my regular garage and they looked at it and told me that the tail light lens was not cracked and that the wiring and plug was not corroded at all. They repaired it for $ 9.50. I returned to Prolube and the vehicle was re-tested and passed no problem. I'm very disappointed in Prolube and will not return. read more

I LOVE Pro Lube! I used them for all repairs, maintenance, and inspections for about 10 years and was always treated with respect and compassion. ALL the mechanics would patiently explain to me exactly what was going on and were honest about what needed to be repaired and what didn't. When I drove a VW Cabrio, I saw them a lot and they really helped keep that car on the road as long and as cheaply as possible. That was my 3rd used car I'd brought in and it was at that point that John would advise me like I was his own daughter - it felt caring and supportive, not patronizing. (Really, that car was a money pit.) They have quick turn-around (I never waited long for parts), I could always see them within 3 days of calling for an appointment, and if you live in downtown Northampton, they are conveniently located. These people are awful. I took my car to get inspected there and they charged me 90$ to tell me that I would need $1500 worth of repairs. I went to another shop the next day and found out that pro lube was totally trying to rip me off and I only needed to get a sensor fixed (around 200$) in order to pass. I have been using Pro Lube for YEARS. Very friendly front staff and they explain what is wrong but I had a terrible experience with them the last month. I took my 2000 Honda in for routine maintenance and because I was hearing a weird rattling when I went over bumps. I figured it would be a wheel bearing or something like that. Turns the rear of my front subframe was rusted. Of course they still did the routine transmission and radiator work charging me $200 even though the rust damage technically "totals" my car. While I totally understand you pay for the service you request, I guess it's not routine to check out the strange noises before you do the regular maintenance to help save the customer a few dollars? Keep in mind I've been a consistent customer, coming to them for everything from oil changes and inspections to brake and alignment work. I took my car to Cahillane Auto Body to see if they could do anything about the rust damage and they were shocked as to how bad the situation was, especially when I told them I was going to Pro Lube for the last couple years. I had even taken my car in for Pro Lube's spring special this year which they review "shocks, struts, ball joints, tie rods, and bushings". No mention of severe rust damage or any warning that my car was about to fall apart. read more

I've only been here for inspections and a couple oil changes, but they have a very efficient system and a super friendly front desk staff - I have no complaints. Very easy to accomplish either task during your lunch hour. During my most recent inspection they discovered I had a brake light out - and offered to replace it for about $7.00. About 1000 miles after I got my oil and oil filter changed at Prolube, the check engine light went on in my car. I didn't figure there was a connection with the oil change, so I went to the Firestone closest to my work in CT to have it looked at. They informed me that the oil pressure was off because of either how the oil filter was put on incorrectly or the wrong one was used. After having paid Prolube for an oil change, I had to pay Firestone to fix what they had done. When I called Prolube to let them know this had happened, John on the phone was immediately defensive and started scolding me for not bringing my car to them and not having brought it in sooner (I brought it in the morning after the Check Engine light went on). He had made the assumption that I had been driving with the light on since my oil change. He called the Enfield CT Firestone to talk with the staff, and then called me back. He said he wasn't "in the mood to give a refund," and that "if you want customer service or something, I can give you a coupon for 1/2 off your next oil change." I was offended by that, as I would be paying yet again for a service that I was having to pay Firestone $175 to assess and fix. I've had my car serviced at Prolube since I moved here two years ago, and I'm not going back after the treatment both me and my car received. It was every bad trope about men talking down to women about their cars rolled into one. I might not know much about the inner workings of my car, but I do take care of it, and I definitely won't be back to Prolube. read more

Knowing that it is important to get a second opinion when it comes to cars... I brought it for a second opinion here! John looked at my car and told me that my car was fine. I didn't need a new transmission pan and work on my suspension. I was both incredibly relieved to have found an honest mechanic in my new home (we've moved from CA) recently... and mad at the first garage! I love this place. I always dread getting my car inspected, mostly because for the past two years I have gone to Firestone in Noho and have had to wait for 1-2 hours. Today I went back for my inspection there and their machine was "down," which weirdly happened when I went in last year too, so they turned me away. I then went to Prolube because it was my only day off, and I was in and out (with an oil change) in 20 minutes! It was too easy. I had even brought in my computer to do some work (thanks to their free wifi) anticipating I'd be there for a while. It was a very pleasant surprise. The staff was also very polite and kind. I've recently had my timing belt replaced and some other maintenance done and have been completely satisfied-the amounts I paid were very close to the estimates I was given and the work has a warrantee. I was visiting my son at Amherst College and staying in Northampton.The day we left, the weather was cold and wretched -- sleet, freezing rain and snow. My windshield wiper started flopping around and I couldn't see clearly out of the windshield. I pulled into a driveway to see if I could snap it back on but it was clearly in need of repair. I looked up and there was the Prolube Auto Center. I walked in and asked them to take a look. They immediately brought my car in and fixed it for a very reasonable price. Service is generally quick, sometimes my vehicle is in the service bay before I can check in. They tell you up front if there is going to be a long wait. Service is always friendly and courteous.
