Lame. Good look but the moment we walked inside, the place was dirty...trash on the floor and other tables not being cleaned and it wasn't even busy. The moment I walked in, some random biker dude in his 50's biker attire was staring me down. Why?? I wish I knew...maybe he thought I was cute or maybe he liked my RANCID jacket. Aaaanyways...I ordered the Philly Cheese Steak and there was nothing good about it. It was "ehh" (Shoulders shrugs). My friend ordered chili. At the time, it sounded really good because it was so cold out (January) but when she received it, she said the chili was still cool in the middle. I arrived around 8:30 PM and was the only person there. I ordered the chicken fried steak dinner and iced tea. The steak was good but the mashed potatoes were terrible - a bad instant version. The meal came with a roll and a small corn on the cob which half was Luke warm and half iced cold. The iced tea was very good. T He night waitress was pleasing and did a good job. The waitress offered to put them on a separate plate and put them on a microwave. I was thankful she offered to do something about it but I've bartended and waitressed off and on throughout my life but that is never an option. The nostalgic atmosphere is really what makes this place. The food is so-so, this last visit I had the biscuits and gravy. It was mediocre, the gravy was definitely from a bag mix. Me and my husband go there in the morning to have breakfast. It was our first time eating and as soon as we stepped in it was like I was in the 1950's. I actually enjoyed the decor. I went here for my second time a few days ago. The waitress is graduating this year and was alone with the cook. The place had two tables. She never remembered my drink order we had to take all five cups up and ask for refills. Our food took an hour to get there and was overcooked. She never asked if we wanted dessert and brought the check and said oops i already made your check. She was too busy socializing to remember anything. She told the other table she never eats there because shes too tired so she cant give them a recommendation. Honestly if i had hired her she would be gone by now. REALLY bad for business. Really liked the atmosphere and the food was ok, but I sure can't rate it any higher after experiencing several bouts of "Montezuma's revenge" in the middle of the night after eating there on 7/9/15. Fries were soft and almost soggy with oil, bacon on BLT was also greasy, not crispy. Their cream sickle shake is made with real orange juice and is worth ordering! I had low expectations coming here, but I still couldn't help feeling disappointed. The first thing I noticed was the smell. It smelled terrible! I almost turned around and walked out for health purposes, but I decided, against my better judgement, to give it a chance. The food was good, but on the pricy side. They did give me a military discount, which brought the cost down from 'very high' to just 'high'. The wait staff was friendly enough, but several of them pulled a bag a Cheez-Its out of the trash and started eating in front of the customers. Gross and unacceptable!! Worse yet, the owner was sitting there discussing business and scheduling with the employees (also in front of the customers) and said nothing. One employee jokingly tried to touch my burger. I really thought she was going to, but thankfully she didn't actually touch it. The diner was dirty and in general disrepair. Missing tiles, peeling paint, walls stained by some sort of brown substance that had run down the wall and dried because it had never been cleaned. The restroom was dirty, but not as bad as I expected. I shudder to think what the kitchen looked like if the rest of the diner was this dirty and disorganized. Overall, I really think this could be a cool place with better management. They have classic car shows from time to time and the atmosphere is decent if you are into old school, 1950's style diners. However, as it is now, I can't recommend it, just from the food safety perspective. Stay away! I haven't gotten sick yet, but there is nothing about this place that makes me feel comfortable eating here again. read more

Maybe this place was good, maybe it wasn't. We wouldn't know because we just sat there at the bar waiting for service. It was ok because they looked busy; half the tables were taken, the other half were covered with the trash of previous patrons. The woman behind the bar walked past us several times without saying anything but hey, they were busy. So we stuck it out. Well, the other servers kept asking this woman to do stuff like refill sodas, brew ice tea, etc. That's when it got annoying. And then, we watched as plates of food sat under the heat lamps because everyone was too busy to take them to the tables. All of this was fine, I guess, until a family came in and sat right next to us at the bar. Well, the lady behind the bar all the sudden had time to say "good morning" to this trio and she even took a minute to get a drink order. I shot a look at my lovely wife and said, "let's get the $&@% outta here!" As we got up, the manager (maybe) whined as she said, "aww, are you guys leaving?" Yep, we were leaving. Lucky for us there was a Cracker Barrel next door and although we prefer non-chain restaurants that Uncle Herschel's Favorite is perfect after being ignored by the staff at this hole in the wall. Living in southwest Missouri along Route 66 ourselves, this type of diner is pretty much "old hat" to my husband and I, but we still appreciate its charm! We pulled off the highway for dinner planning to grab something from Culver's but then we spotted the Route 66 Diner and changed our minds. I won't lie, a first glance at the menu gave me sticker shock for a sec. But once the food arrived, that was forgotten completely because of the large portions and delicious food, definitely above par for this type of joint. My husband said his fish sandwich was fantastic and tasted freshly breaded (it was very large too) and he liked the fries a lot. They serve breakfast ALL DAY and NIGHT, people...I'm sure some of you are as thrilled by that as I am. Anyway, I loved my country breakfast of two eggs perfectly cooked and two surprisingly large and delicious sausage links (I was expecting something much less remarkable). The biscuits tasted homemade, and while I kind of doubt that, I think this place chose some seriously tasty biscuits...the gravy was pretty standard white gravy but it had a genuine creaminess that made it pretty great, and for some reason it was tinted vaguely pink but that made no difference to me after a bite. There was plenty to eat and a nice family friendly retro atmosphere. Solid service, too. We were impressed. read more

There was a southern gentleman that helped us right away .. he was all over the place making sure that even the coffee was constantly full .. he deserved 5 stars all by himself.. each of us were all very happy at the food giving it also 5 stars ... from the pancakes .. eggs .. bacon... chick fried steak .. waffles and gravy ... So after coming here numerous times I have decided that this place is no longer for me and it's sad. I love the food especially the meat lovers skillet. Last week I discovered a hair in my food and I know things happen but it's probably the 6th in my almost 4yrs living here. So today for bfast I go in and open up the menu and there is a roach right in the middle of the menu. The server was in front of me and I let him know saw he just opened up the menu and let it fall on the ground and handed me back the menu. I was immediately grossed out but still I ordered and ate some of my food but couldn't even eat a 1/4 of it bc the thoughts of roaches dancing around the place. I wish I could say this is an isolated incident but a close friend had this happen to him 2 times before at the diner. So if there are roaches in the menus then there is a lot more in the kitchen. It's simple have clean floors and clean counters and they will go away. It's sad bc I really like this establishment bc they are not a chain but there are only so many times you can keep trying. The food and service has always been good but I'd rather quit while I'm ahead instead of waiting to get sick. read more

I should have ordered the burger, which is what the hotel clerk recommended. Was hungry for mashed potatoes so I went for the open faced roast beef. Disappointed in getting instant potatoes. Still beef was tender, homemade honey mustard dressing was exceptional on a generous side salad. The waitress did not grumble about starting a fresh pot of decaf. The food was great and the atmosphere and service was awesome! There was only one waiter running the entire place, and he was amazing. Fast service with lots of personality and we watched him make milk-shake after milk-shake in the midst of it all. The food: onion rings, crispy and delicate; the chicken fried steak, big (but not too big!) and tender; chicken tenders, crispy but soft, said by my very picky kid; patty melt, I haven't had forever and it was great. Monday April 1, 2013 about 10:30-11AM, My family and I visited this restaurant. They are serving in the military and wanted to take us out for a meal while we were in town. We waited 30 minutes to get our orders taken and another 15 to get our food. Other customers that had come in later received their food and were finished before we got our food. When the waitress finally came and offered me another coffee , after the man working there already gave me some, she turned and walked away while I was asking her if my guest could get refills, which we never got. Maybe she was having a bad day but we paid $47 for the meal and we very disappointed in the service. read more
