Terrific BBQ in modest surroundings. Had no idea this place was there--right on route 9 just south of Cold Spring--but we were in for a treat when we swerved off the road to try it. We decided to go here after looking at the reviews. I ordered brisket and pork ribs with Fried Okra on the side. They'll ask you if you want the brisket marbled or lean . I picked lean (should have been marbled). It came very dry and bland. Pork ribs are bland too. I tried my friend's chicken wings. They are bland too. I have to put lots of bbq sauce on all the meat to give it a little juice. The only thing is good is the side . Fried okra and Mac n Cheese are better than the meat. I've been to Pecan Lodge in Texas and the meat is far 300% better than this place. read more

We've passed this place so many times, never even knew it was open for business! It's a little set back from the road, but is more noticeable now thanks to the sign out front. The dirt parking lot, picnic tables scattered around & signs all around give this place an authentic vibe. Inside, are a few tables, the order window and menu, including a nice selection of beer & bottled drinks. We ordered brisket & chicken, Dino rib, mac n cheese, potato salad and corn bread. Everything was really good!! The rib was awesome- one was plenty for me, it was huge. They do their own smoking here, no messin' around. There are a few good sauces to choose from- bbq, hot, etc. The mac n cheese was delish with a hint of jalapeno. The potato salad was awesome. The cornbread - hands down, the best I've ever tasted. I want to thank the owner Bill & all his staff for their fast friendly service. We had a large party and they accommodated us right away. Bill went over the menu items and answered our questions. They were attentive and though we stayed past closing time they didn't complain or didn't rush is out. We ordered: ribs, marveled brisket,BBQ chicken, spicy & sweet sausage, smoked wings, frito pies, ranch beans, Mac & cheese, Cole slaw, fried okra, corn bread & fried corn bread. They served us within minutes & we devoured everything in sight. The ribs were smoky and falling off the bone. It was seasoned great & didn't need bbq sauce. The marbled brisket was like butter-oh, so tender. Bill's homemade BBQ sauce is delicious & compliments the meat. I wish he bottled that stuff because I would have loved to take that sauce back home to Cali. The frito pie is amazing...he adds brisket to the chili beans. I want a pot of that to go... The Mac & cheese has chunks of jalapeño and gives it nice kick. The golden nuggets are corn bread squares deep fried & sprinkled with powdered sugar. It's not too sweet & tastes like brownie brittle. This is by far, the best BBQ I've had in my life. Everything was seasoned well, smoked right, and delicious. We left satisfied with the food & service. Bill checked on us & told us about Austin, Texas & the history of BBQ. Bill even took the time to show us the BBQ area & smoker. I had the marbled brisket, spicy sausage, and ribs with mac n cheese, fried okra, and cornbread. The sausage had a decent amount of kick and needed nothing else. The brisket went well with their sauce. The ribs were fine with or without, but I always go with. The sides were all great, but I appreciated the cornbread most. A little firm and as sweet as cake. I was disappointed by the lack of fresh sweet tea and settled for a bottle of pure leaf. I finished it off with some "dirty chocolate" ice cream by SoCo. My only complaint is that the serving size is like 4 ozs. I wanted a pint. Great place. Texas paraphernalia everywhere. Picnic tables large enough to seat a part of 8. This place was great for a quick tasty dinner. We got the texas sampler and bacon cheeseburger. The mac and cheese was a huge hit with my boyfriend, had the perfect amount of spiciness. The meats are charred tasting for an authentic barbecue flavor. The corn bread and bean chili were out of this world too. I thought the atmosphere was pretty neat too. Polite staff are happy to help you pick the many savory options on the menu; from pulled chicken to their famous short rib (personal favorite), classic baby back ribs - by the rack - or cut down. The brisket is to die for and makes great toppers to any of their dishes! I ordered a jalapeño sausage topped with brisket(+0.50!) and a full rack not to be shared. See photos. The smoke flavor is pronounced, and the meat falls from the bone. Their complimentary southern BBQ sauce is right out of North Carolina - Thick, and rich snappy flavor. Ordering is a charm. Less than five minutes out the door. They accept card, and dine in options are available. Great for families, kids, couples, takeout for a riverside picnic, or just peeling off the road for some satisfaction. My advice to myself, is to try the whole menu. However, food is not made on site and it was not properly stored and reheated. You walk into the building so you can order from a food truck trailer sitting outside. Will never go back! This might be my first review. Just to preface what is not going to be a great review: I LOVE BBQ, and have been all over Texas Lowcountry to satiate my craving: Louie Mueller, Kreuz, Smitty's, Blacks (and Terry Blacks), Salt Lick, Franklin's, Valentina's, Lamberts, and more. My sister lives in Austin so I go often. I don't expect NY BBQ to come close (though Hometown BBQ is really great, and nothing else in NYC comes close). From the outside, Round Up looks the part, and that continues to inside. I like how they've set up their operation so they can take it on the road. Pretty neat. I really want to like this place. I ordered a meat platter with ribs, brisket (marbled/fatty), and sausage. $20 something right out of the gate. It gives me no pleasure to say this: They served dry, overcooked ribs. They were black, no fat, and falling off the bone (note: rib meat should NOT fall off the bone). I asked for another round. They said I got the ends which are drier. Fine... But the ribs from mid-rack were about the same. Here's the thing--ribs are the easiest thing for pros to make, Brisket is the hardest. And this is why a lot of the best brisket places don't even do ribs. They're not a challenge. Here, however, they were definitely challenged. As for the brisket, it was gray and the fat hadn't completely rendered. No bark, no smoke ring. They even burnt their sausage, which was also dry. How?? Sides were OK. Weird they were out of Shiner considering all the signs advertising it. I live nearby but, sadly, I won't be back. read more

This place is a unicorn. A four-leaf clover. A needle in a haystack. What I'm saying is, if someone told you that the most authentic Texas Barbecue on the East Coast is in a sleepy Upstate New York town, I guarantee you that you wouldn't believe them. Nor would you find it in passing on any of your travels. If you weren't destined for it, you probably pass it right up. This place you have to know about, and go out of your way to get to. But my God is it worth it. Set in an abandoned gas station, with the dining room in the old garage, and food being cooked and served from an adjacent kitchen trailer (with a hole cut through the building to take orders and pass you food through the trailer window), I don't think it gets any more "authentic homemade" than this. Doesn't sound like a place the New York Times would write up, but they absolutely did. And when you go there, you'll know why. Everything is done in-house, from the barbecue sauce, to the filling of the sausages. You can tell these guys know what they're doing, and they love doing it for a living. There's not one piece of that menu that isn't memorable after you leave. Whenever I get a chance to visit from my humble abode in New York City, I always come back with a container full of cornbread. It's by far some of the best cornbread I've ever had in my life. Simple and straightforward, no Frills or Thrills, just like your grandmother used to make. The brisket is to die for, perfectly cooked, and the ribs are fall off the bone. I can go on and on about every menu item, but if you want to try a sampling yourself, they offer a Round-Up sampler for only $19. With that you get chicken, sausage, brisket, ribs, and three sides (mac & cheese / potato salad / coleslaw)... and of course a piece of cornbread. Perfect portions of each, so your not dying after eating it, but your still 100% content and happy. Whenever I'm making my way through Upstate New York for business or pleasure, I always make sure that this detour is planned in my itinerary. If you are a fan of barbecue, this is the place you don't want to miss. read more

Frequent the restaurant regularly....Food always top notch until today, Independence Day. Ordered over the phone with a 30 minute arrival window...Pleased that I did since the line was out the door with customers waiting to order. Ushered inside and following a 10 minute wait paid for my order. Upon arrival at home, my family was terribly disappointed. The brisket (one pound) was layered in fat even though I requested the lean variety. One pound of ribs were also terribly fatty and greasy. Cole slaw was excellent as was the cornbread but the mac and cheese was extra thick and resembled yesterday's preparation. I hope this was just a "bad day at the ranch" for the overwhelmed staff which seemed to be running around like "chickens without their heads!" Unfortunate way to end the 4th of July! read more

Excellent BBQ. Went here over Labor day weekend, and really enjoyed the food. It's a pretty casual place where you order inside and then grab a table inside or outside. My husband and I are huge fans of the sausage there; but the brisket is my all time favorite in all honesty. The owner is a super nice gentleman who both times that we've visited has come out to greet us and ask how the food tastes. He takes great pride in what he does and asks for feedback from his patrons. There's and indoor and outdoor seating section, this weekend we sat outdoors and enjoyed a band that played out there. I was born and raised in Texas and I know good barbecue. And why can't they have some mac and cheese without hot peppers????? Traditional mac and cheese has no peppers in it. Give people a choice. We have come here about 15 times and have never been disappointed. The food is incredible, the owners (Bill and Linda) and employees are warm and friendly, and you will get your meal 5-15 minutes after you order. Everything is great here, but my current faves are the Dino Rib, the brisket dog, the marbly brisket, and the spicy sausage. I type this with smoky fingertips. Eight hours and two hand washings later, my hands still smell like the ribs. I'm still tasting it, too. But I don't mind. This place was great. Wife and I ordered the brisket, ribs, mac & cheese, coleslaw and cornbread. The ribs are the thing, man, they are so good. So smoky and tender. I'm usually not a ribs guy, either. But I was sad when I finished my portion. The marbled brisket was good, but needed the sauce. My portion was a touch dry. The sauce though. Oh man. The mac & cheese had some jalapenos thrown in for some variety. The cornbread was moist. Add a Shiner Bock on the side and that is one great lunch. Ideally eaten after one of the many strenuous hikes in the area (we had just done Breakneck Ridge). I'm a big fan of Cold Spring in general, and wouldn't have guessed that the best restaurant was outside of downtown. I'll be back next time I'm in town. read more

It's worth the drive up north to the middle of nowhere. The people who run the place are incredibly nice and down to earth which just adds to the awesomeness of this place. The best things on the menu: Ribs Brisket (marbled) Fried okra Mac and cheese Mashed potatoes with brisket gravy The cornbread is great, too, but very sweet. People tend to love the sausage (I'm just not a sausage fan in general) and the chicken is quite good, though a bit smokey for my taste. You can get a feast of food for under $20 and, to boot, they have Shinerbock! Authentic as you can get in NY, at least. If you're a Texas BBQ fan, run, don't walk, to this place...You'll thank me later. read more

Driving along a two-lane state highway, you see a ramshackle hardware store in the middle of a pocked gravel parking lot, barely larger than the handpainted sign announcing its presence. Behind the store is an old barn/house combo set at the edge of the woods, with a sort of shed tacked onto the side, with a trailer beside that; these are surrounded by signs announcing "BBQ." North Louisiana? No, New York. As a Southerner, I have long bemoaned (and written in these very Yelp pages about) what Yankees call "Barbecue," and so I'm incredibly pleased to find something approximating the real deal way up here! Texas isn't Memphis, and the Round Up doesn't serve the 18-hour dry-rubbed pork ribs I grew up with, but for a spot within walking distance of home, I'll certainly take it. Though I doubt I could walk home after a plate of The Round Up's delicious brisket. Note: I focus more on the exterior decor of the spot than the food, because I second/third/nth all that's been written here about that aspect; but the decor portion is important. In the country, fancy joints try to lure customers with their ambiance, while truly great food places can subsist with a picnic table and a tarp, and a cooler full of beer. While the Round Up has a bit more than that, it's just a bit. Which, really, is all ya need. Con: I wish they had greens. Pro: everything else is just fine. read more
