A cute creamery situated on a beautiful farm -- what can get more New England than that?? I was blown away by the amount of flavors available and at how nice and patient the employees at this establishment are! I brought my family up here for a treat and the young woman who was taking our order handled all our flavor-related questions and indecisiveness with a smile. Now for the actual ice cream -- we got the banana split (you can sub in the traditional flavors for whatever you want! We tied to switch it up by subbing the chocolate with Cowabunga crunch, a vanilla with candied pecans and caramel swirl), a kiddie of the Butter Pecan and a small with the Coffee Oreo . After my first bite, I was so impressed by just how creamy the ice cream was! There was no weird after-taste that comes due to the preservatives/pasteurization and the flavors with ON POINT. The strawberry in the banana split was the star flavor of that show. The coffee flavor in the coffee oreo was perfect -- it had that roasted coffee flavor without that bitterness. However, the butter pecan was absolutely fantastic and a MUST HAVE. There is plenty of seating, including in the sun and under a canopy, all via picnic tables. There is also a ton of parking. We got to eat our ice cream while on top of a hill that overlooked a field with cows. In addition, there are goats behind the creamery that kids can pet and feed. In all-- a great experience and a wonderful place to stop if you are near the area. Big bold flavors served with rural charm. You are on a farm so there is that farm smell so be weary if with someone who gets queasy easily (you could always take the ice cream to go :) ) ! They cannot serve tap water to humans but will gladly get some your dog. read more

This was some yummy ice cream!!!! I was a little boring & went with one of my favorites...chocolate chip! The vanilla ice cream was so smooth & tasty! Not too sweet & it was loaded with tons of chocolate chips, big ones too!! There were so many flavors to choose from & clearly written on a board above the counter. Looked like they also served food too. Great prices & 2 scoops was plenty, probably a little too much for me. Next time I will get just 1 scoop. Staff was friendly & the place was busy with long lines but more then one window was open & they moved quickly. Only down fall.....they don't take credit cards so when you go make sure you have enough cash $$$$ or your check book!! read more

5 stars is a no brainer for this quintessential ice cream stand. Cows, presumably of whose milk is used for homemade ice cream, graze on grass(!), sometimes close enough to touch. Kids of all ages can enjoy goats relaxing and kids playing in their own area. You can also walk past the goats and up a large hill to the actual farm for a beautiful view of the area. Farm-grown items, baked goods, and treats are just inside. Easily the best scenery and setting for an ice cream stand around. Credit cards are accepted in the store but not at the ice cream windows. read more

Will I be going to the ice cream place 5 minutes from my house? 15 minutes from my house? Nope. I will travel the 25 minutes to go to Rota Spring Farm. Their ice cream is SO GOOD and the experience of enjoying it a picnic table, looking at the farm animals is totally worth the drive. Their sizes are enormous. The type of thing someone from another country would see and probably think, "Good god, Americans are so disgusting". My 2 kids get ONE kids size and split it. I would estimate the small is 2/3 of a pint. Flavors we have enjoyed: vanilla, lava java (coffee ice cream w/ choc. covered toffee), chocolate peanut butter swirl, moo tracks (perfect balance of chocolate and vanilla and mini PB cups). Tried the coconut almond bar -- little too sweet for me. Picked up some very reasonably priced grass-fed steaks. (Haven't cooked them yet.) The ice cream is delicious!! I love their variety of interesting flavors and size options! They have a 6 scoop banana boat!! The atmosphere is great since you get to eat ice cream and watch the cows or goats in pasture!! The down side is the slow service which they could easily improve by placing 2 servers per window... or maybe they could sell just ice cream on som windows and food at others. I drive from the City of Boston at least twice a month just to enjoy your concoctions. Everything you serve is worth the time, the drive. A favorite destination - close enough for me to bike ride there with our kids, delicious ice cream, always friendly service with a smile. Scooping has been a lot stingier this year. I feel as though it used to be ridiculous in the past ... Scoops were the size of a softball. Now, smaller than a baseball. Prices stayed the same. Good ice cream is hard to find and Rota Springs has great tasting ice cream for sure. There are picnic tables you can sit at and a nice farm type field to look out over. The cash only thing is a bit annoying ... Especially given ice cream for 3 or 4 people will easily set you back $20 or $30. Wish they had fresh waffle cones though given the up charge. Hopefully they go back to the generous scooping next year. I'll replace the star I removed. Kimball Farm has much better scoops but the ice cream at Roda Spring has a slight edge for taste. read more

Whoa. Whoa. WHOA. Best ice cream ever? Maybe. Reasonable prices, hearty portions, and the best farm-made ice cream around. Not diet-friendly. You can taste the fat, and I mean that in the best possible way. This ice cream tastes freshly made, and it's oh-so delicious. The lines in the summer are a testament to the quality of the product. You may be bummed your first time there as you circle for a parking spot, but don't be deterred. Their ice cream is worth the wait. I've had two special flavors this summer, Graham Central Station and Lemon Dream, which were both out-of-this-world. And I always think you can tell a lot about the quality of an ice cream place by their simplest flavors, when they can't hide behind mix-ins and crazy flavors but just have to shine with the quality of their products. Well, their strawberry and vanilla ice cream are some of the best I've had. We brought a hand-packed quart of their vanilla to a cookout with some blackberry-peach crisp, and everyone raved about the ice cream. They also have a great little store with their own grass-fed beef, homemade chocolate, local cheeses, and other local products. Try their cornmeal crackers - they're divine! Excellent ice cream and portions! We drove up here from Worcester and took about 20 minutes. We loved the farm and the petting zoo around back. I ordered a kiddie cup of Graham Central Station. It tasted like Graham crackers, brown sugar and chocolate. It was super yummy. My friends got the Purple cow, raspberry sorbet and cookie dough. They all loved it! Rota Spring has best ice cream I have had. Flavors are great, service is great, portions are great, every ice cream I have gotten here has had great texture. The selection is truly magnificent. Price is moderate, but on par with most New England ice cream stands. And these guys really do make their own "homemade ice cream". My favorite is Indian Pudding, a fall-flavored treat for any time of year. If cornmeal, molasses, and spices sound good to you, it may be your new favorite, too! When I lived on Lake Quinsigamond in East Worcester, there were many closer ice cream destinations. I literally had to pass buy one to get to Rota Spring. Yet I still made the scenic (ok, nearly 50 minute long) round trip to go to Rota, it was that much better! Side details: Rota is independent, adjacent to pasture land with animals. Traveling to Rota often takes you past the Wachusett Reservoir and lots of park land, so you can even treat yourself after a fun day outdoors. read more

I've been wanting to go to this place for a long time. Went today. Definitely way overrated. People are nice, you can look at the cows but the ice cream is very ordinary. Had chocolate chip. So I've been to a lot of ice cream places and I have to admit this is my new favorite by far. How come everybody still screws around going to Richardson's and Kimball's when there is a place like this? It is tucked away on a side road literally in the middle of nowhere in a town already in the middle of nowhere. So convenience for anyone other than the cows that live there is not happening. Regardless the drive was quite nice especially since the weather was so awesome on the day I went. Onto the ice cream. I had the Indian Pudding which was described as flavored with molasses, corn meal and just the right amount of spices. The description was dead on. It was a cross between bread pudding and spice bread that had been frozen. I have never had ice cream like it before. The spices were on better than those at Christina's which until now was the best purveyor of funky flavored ice creams I had been to. As all the other reviews note the creaminess of the ice cream is like no other ice cream I've had. My companion had the lemon sorbet (due to being lactose intolerant) which was also very good. She had a few bites of mine and decided she wanted to go back again sometime and get the ice cream regardless of the consequences because it was that good. So I would say that's a ringing endorsement of how good it was. The sizes were predictably ridiculously huge as is the norm at these small ice cream stands. I ordered a kiddie which was plenty of ice cream. I seriously think no sane human would order the large unless you were feeding a family of 6 from it. The prices were crazy low. 2 kiddies was 5 bucks and some change. There was plenty of parking although the lot was dirt and the recent flooding looked to have taken a toll on the driveway. They were trying to fix it while I was there. The lines were short and moved quickly which is a nice change from some of the places that you get stuck waiting forever at. read more

I am consuming thick creamy deliciousness in a cup (don't worry, they have cones, too) and staring at the source from which this mountain of mouth-watering yum yums came from. Happy little cows meandering through a huge, green grass pasture complete with a stream. Idyllic in and of itself, but what about the product? Variety: CHECK PLUS. Indicated by the length of time it took for my companions to make our decision. So many flavors available, plus specials like ginger (with ginersnap pieces), pumpkin, and smores! Blows all of the local ice cream stores out of the water, in my opinion. Flavor: CHECK. Absolutely creamy. I had a scoop of S'mores and a scoop of the Moo Tracks (vanilla ice cream with fudge ripples and teeny peanut butter cups.) The Moo Tracks was a smidge disappointing because I only found one little peanut butter cup in the whole scoop! There was a ton of the fudge though...maybe a bit overwhelming, and the S'mores could have used more of what makes a S'more: chocolate pieces, marshmellows and graham crackers. Portion: CHECK PLUS. Enormousssssssssss. Two fist-sized scoops is a SMALL. PRICE: CHECK PLUS. $3.75. I pay more for a soft-serve small cone at JP Lick's. read more
