I don't live too close to Meola's but when I'm in the area, this is the place to go. They have a really fun assortment of ice cream flavors. This past time I got the Boston Blackout. It consisted of chocolate ice cream, chocolate chips and really, really soft brownie. SO GOOD. They have a separate building about 15 feet away from where you order your ice cream that looks like a garage but actually has benches and a few swinging benches. On tonight's trip, the cashier asked his manager who declined to ring in a brownie on its own. I feel accommodations should be made when there is a child who wants to be included. We go out for ice cream because we have a daughter who loves ice cream, but our son is also a part of this family, and should not be excluded due to the limitations of his disability. My daughter & I were there eating ice cream. There are several old and untuned pianos against the back wall. There are no signs that say "do not touch" or "do not play the piano", they are open and I've seen other kids playing them in the past. The one they use for musical performances was up front, covered and clearly not for use. Anyway, my daughter was playing one of the pianos in the back pretending she was up on stage giving a performance and then bowing as I clapped. The owner was up front swinging in the wooden swing. Then his son arrived with a pizza. The owner turned around to us and said in nastiest tone, "Hey, no more piano, I'm gonna be eating my supper" (Basically telling us to shut up so he could enjoy his dinner) My daughter thought she was in trouble the way he spoke so rudely. As per other reviews- service can be poor. Most of the employees are high schoolers and tend to be lacking in speed and attentiveness. I am a longtime lover of Meola's ice cream, and had been praising it to family visitors from Virginia. After a family gathering fir the evening meal, I took them to Polar Park and the new Bob Cousy statue. Next stop was Meola's, but when we drove up at 9:30 it was clear that they had closed for the night. When I walked to the back of the ice cream stand I ran into the owner. After hearing my plight, Mr. Meola asked what flavors my guests wanted, and then had the kids who were closing shop prepare cones in our desired flavors for us. We were so excited to have an ice cream stand in Holden! After ordering and receiving our ice cream, we were told the stand is cash only. The only signage stating cash only is a 3x3 square behind two screens; we had no way of knowing before it was pointed out. ATM fee is $3.25. I called the contact number listed to let them know the Holden store is missing signs, and was immediately told by a West Boylston manager to "Hurry it up, there is a long line". When I said I had a complaint, he stated "there is plenty of other business" and would not give me his name, nor a contact number or address for higher management. Overall, the service we received from both stores was poor and disrespectful. The coffee ice cream was not bad, but a bit bland. The waffle cone was bland as well. The Boston blackout ice cream was "nothing special". We are sad to say we will not be returning. read more

In a world of gelato, antelope flavored sorbet, and eggs and bacon ice cream, there is some relief from the pretense of fancified ice cream that is found at Meola's. The days of Meola making their own ice cream is over. That is a minus. However the ice cream BASE is made following Meola's recipe, they then add the flavors and other goodies to the ice cream themselves. So it is a half/half situation. But you can't go to your local yokel grocery store and buy this ice cream. There has to be at least 40 flavors of ice cream, if not more. Their idea of a "small" must have been sized by Tedi Bruschi because a small is HUGE. Come very hungry if you going large. They also serve hot dogs if you're feeling guilty. There is a sitting area in the old shipping/receiving bays across the parking lot. They have picnic tables, been painted, lighting, and on at least the Saturday night I was there two people playing live music. It was a happy place, fully of happy families enjoying great ice cream on a warm summer night. This was been a right of passage for years. There is something special about Meola's, and when I travel 2,700 miles across the country, if it is the summer months, a visit is on my must do list. Oh - CASH ONLY! read more
