I haven't written a review in years, but this felt like it needed attention brought to it. The food was good. HOWEVER, the greed and gall is hard to swallow. You can see my order attached. Their website's description of the item, and my request. I understand not all restaurants will submit to special requests, and that's fine. However, what they did was classless. Instead of making the substitution, or just not complying and giving the crab rangoon anyway, they simply deleted the crab rangoon and didn't make up for them in any way. I received 4 chicken wings, 2 chicken teriyaki, and not a lot of boneless spareribs. So they took my money for the crab rangoon, and kept the crab rangoon. This is yet another "it is what it is" review that gets a high merit. I have dined at Rose's on a few occasions and found it to be very good (for what is). This is "American Chinese" and I stick with my go-to fav of Kung Pao Chicken and I must say it is dynamite. Great flavor and ideal viscosity sauce and best of all it's 90 percent bird (see PIC). It was cooked fresh to order and served hot AF. This is a five-star situation. Usually KPC is padded out with celery and carrots and whatever just to skimp on the bird resulting in a no-bueno situation. My One got the Chicken Wings which were also cooked to order and served hot AF resulting a yes-bueno situation. Very tasty and crisp. Rose's is a no-frills place to eat but is great to get your nom-nom on. Peep it out and dine in for fresh and tasty hot AF grub. It's bueno. 'Nuff said... After having traveled to China many times I learned the difference between "American Chinese" food I grew up with and "Real Chinese" food which is totally different and amazing. Rose's serves American Chinese food, so it's not fair to judge this for anything else. Our first foray here included Beef with Hunan Style Beef with Mixed Vegetables and Fried Dumplings for take-out. Very fresh ingredients, vegetables were not over-cooked and generous portions for very reasonable prices. I used to live in Medford and would come here all the time. I really enjoy their Chinese food, it tastes fresh and it's not too greasy like some places. I always get the meat fried rice, chicken teriyaki and the shrimp lobster sauce. I was really shocked that the shrimp was so big, it is not like the baby shrimp they typically serve in the rice. The chicken teriyaki is cooked to your liking, you just have to let them know so they don't overcook it. I have also tried the chicken wings and the chicken fingers and those taste good too, they're nice and crispy. The customer service isn't the greatest but it is not the worst. read more

When the delivery didn't arrive I called to find that they never got the order! But Roses couldn't have been more accommodating, he assured he'd have my order in 30 min or less! I used to eat this stuff years ago when my parents owned the store next door. At that time (man, I sound like an old lady talking about old school stories), the owners had a little girl who I used to play with. I can't remember what her and her mom's name was, but she had just come from China and we didn't understand each other so we used our hands to communicate by pointing to things while talking. After a long day of playing in the streets, her mother would call us in to have a nice meal and after I was done, I was walk back next door where my own mother would be yelling at me because she didn't have any idea where I was. Oh, the good old days. How simple they used to be. The owner of Rose's was a man named Tony and he was incredibly nice and looked like this old school Vietnamese singer so my family used to refer to him as the Vietnamese singer and not his actual name. A couple years later, he sold the place and I never met the people who bought it because they didn't care to make friends. They renovated and added a sushi bar to their restaurant which I remember thinking at 10 that it was a bad idea because sushi didn't come from China. As I know today, plenty of sushi places are no longer owned or produced by Japanese people, but I didn't know that 10 years ago. Anyhow, that's just personal stuff. The real review, the food: Living in Boston, close to Chinatown, Americanized Chinese has a certain taste and Rose's never seemed the same to me. I used to eat Rose's as my mom's treat to me after a long day of sitting around with her at work because no one could babysit me. I almost always got their plate of pork fried rice, two fried shrimp, beef teriyaki, boneless spareribs, and chicken wings. This used to set me back a good $7, which 10 years ago seemed like a big deal, especially to a little kid like me. At that time, $7 could have gotten you 8 gallons of gas or 2 packs of cigarettes so you see where I'm going with this... Haha. The food wasn't incredibly cheap. Usually, after a long day, my mom would give me a choice: Rose's or McDonald's. I almost always picked McDonald's. I'm chinese and don't often have a craving for Americanized chinese takeout. For some reason, I've been on a kick lately to look for a decent place near home. I have been putting off this place because the photos and reviews weren't very great, but saw the 5star reviews today and gave them a try. Unfortunately, the other places near home (though mediocre) is by far better... The fried rice was severely undercooked and flavorless. Pork in the rice was dry. Hot and sour soup ingredients were all canned and it wasn't flavorful either. Spare ribs and beef teriyaki had a little flavor but a bit dry as well. Crab Rangoon skin was somewhat soggy. If you're looking for run of the mill chinese takeout around the area, try New Hong Kong village in Medford square or Taipei Tokyo in Davis square. This is a high three star review. I live nearby and am excited to have a go-to Chinese food place right down the street, but I can't say it's really worth making a trip. Seemed very quiet on a Tuesday evening around 8. It has all your standard Chinese food delivery fare, plus a decent selection of Japanese food, sushi, and bubble tea -- definite plus! The sushi bar was still open in theory, but there was no fish on display. Probably to save money on refrigeration, but it was weird seeing an empty sushi bar when they were open for business. The food was good, crystal shrimp, wonton soup, and eggrolls were A-OK. The steamed dumplings ("pork ravioli") were the unfortunate rubbery kind with the super thick bready layer that tasted like glue, with a tiny little bit of flavorless meat filling inside. I ate one with a healthy dose of soy sauce to mask the flavor and threw the rest out. The staff were friendly and efficient, but they could work on the food and ambiance a little. Yi-Hwa, I disagree with you least. For now. While it seems the pack favorite, Gau's Chkn, failed to impress with its superthick garbled glaze, I have found a go-to dish that hits the spot consistently: the Shanghai Pan Fried Noodles. About ten minutes after I order from Rose's, I swear the warning of the truck backing up to my styrofoam container can be heard all along Boston Ave. For a measly $8, you get a plate of textured noodles with a mild brown gravy. Oh, and a METRIC FING TON of shrimp, pork, chicken and veg. If you eat it all in one sitting, remind me to send Kevin Spacey to your place so he can get his SE7EN on. Man, that movie. Remember Lust? Berr. Lightning fast delivery, cheap eats that actually give the false sense of ordering Chinese from a place that doesn't share stock photos of Happy Family, Pu Pu Platters, and Spare Ribs. This place is not nice. Not nice at all. I created a Yelp account just cause I feel so strongly about telling whoever I can reach on how awful they are. You know how Asians discriminate against Asians? Well, I can only assume that of course but what reason can they have for looking me up and down and being grumpy the entire time we were there when the same lady was all smiley at the non-Asian customers? I was so upset on how this lady "accommodated" us so I didn't even bother ordering. But my husband (Caucasian) did, so I have tried some of their food. The food wasn't spectacular that I could just ignore how they almost threw the plastic plates on the table while the lady's mouth was all pouty +smikry at the same time. I could almost hear her scoff. The broccoli that they put in every dish they served looked so green but they're soggy and I won't be surprised if they actually "recycled" them. The crab Rangoon was very hot, fresh off the pan but it wasn't crispy and it didn't come with any sauce at all. They should, cause that could help fix its flavor. The chicken in their General Gao's was dry, wait, I don't know which part was the chicken and which part was the flour because the breading was too thick that even some bits were just flour balls. After all of the money I spent at Rose's during my four years at Tufts, I feel compelled to do my part to raise its average rating. I probably ordered from here fifty times and never once found tinfoil, hair, or any mysterious unidentified objects in my food. What did I receive instead? Fast and friendly service, delicious (unhealthy, sure--but delicious) Americanized fare, and very reasonable prices. As you can probably garner from the other reviews, do not come here expecting authentic Sichuan cuisine or trendy fusion sushi. That's clearly not their M.O. But put in a call if your friend wants pad thai, you're craving a shrimp tempura roll, and your girlfriend wants General Gau's. No one will be blown away, but no one will be terribly disappointed (or surprised) either. It's the best of all worlds! By the way, try ordering $115 worth of take-out for a party of twelve and asking how long it will take to be delivered. Spoiler alert: it's ten minutes. read more

In all the surrounding areas of Boston, it seems like Americanized Chinese food is everywhere you look. One good place to get a quick Chinese take out fix is Rose's in Medford. Though by not at all groundbreaking in their presentation, the dishes they offer and above all the tastes, its still a pretty solid place. The orange chicken, lemon chicken and crab rangoon were staples offered on the menu, and each were pretty delicious. Lightly battered and flavored nicely, they weren't heavy and remained a good dish to save for later as well. The beef lo mein was a bit of a hodge podge of different items, but despite its mix, it was tasty as well. The menu does offer all sorts of options, so its worth checking them out each time you decide to eat at this place. Again, this is just another good chinese and not anything new, but again, in the Medford area, with Somerville, colleges and any one who needs a bit of a fix, Rose's offers a good solid take-out experience. read more

As someone who grew up in southern NJ, moving to Boston was a shock when it came to Chinese food. It all just tasted so "wrong" up here - I couldn't get it. That's why, when I moved to Somerville, I was a bit dubious about trying any Chinese places up here, but Rose's is now my go-to Chinese takeout place. While it looks a little crappy from the exterior, it's actually quaint inside. And the food certainly makes up for it. Their beef teriyaki appetizers are my absolute favorite; I'm convinced they marinade it in their tasty sauce for days before firing it up on the grill. Their sushi is also surprisingly well made for a Chinese takeout, much better than the Japanese restaurant just a mile away off the Powderhouse Circle. You won't find many fancy special rolls, but classic standbys are executed well. And as for delivery - Rose's is wicked fast! I've rarely ever had to wait more than 20 minutes for a delivery, even during peak lunch and dinner hours. The food is piping hot, cooking thoroughly, and always tasty. read more

Usually if you order outside the American Chinese dishes you're rewarded with something flavorful and unique. At Rose's this is not the case. Stick with dishes that include fried chicken and rice. Everything is really disappointing in both quality of the meat and flavor. Peking Style Shredded Beef with Pancakes. No. They give you cold strips of poor quality meat on top of a pound of white shredded lettuce. And the Pancakes were, drum roll, TORTILLAS. STALE FLOUR TORTILLAS. Not even soft tortillas, they'd crack with slightest fold. I would have rather had buttermilk pancakes for Peking Pancakes than flour tortillas. If you stick with General's Chicken or something Americanized, it's a 3 star meal for cheap. I'll start this off by admitting that I'm not the biggest fan of Chinese food. I like it every now and then, though. And often, what I'm looking for is beef and broccoli. So, one night, after hearing from a neighbor that this place is pretty good, I stopped in, and ordered beef and broccoli, white rice and crab rangoon. A plus was that you can get orders of things like beef and broccoli in small sizes, which is great. The rice was fine, that's sort of hard to mess up. The crab rangoon were pretty good. But, the beef and broccoli was just odd. It had a really strange flavor to it, and by strange I mean not good. The broccoli had a nice crunch to it, which was good, but the flavor, I'm not sure if it was the beef or the sauce or both, just ruined it for me. Based on the recommendations of the neighbor and of D, who disagrees with all the negative reviews, I'll probably give this place another try at some point. Ea. meal on their lunch menu comes with two sides: 1.steamed white or fries rice 2.hot-N-sour / wonton soup or fried wings... all for just $6-8 (including tax). You may pay an extra buck and get their tasty crab-rangoons instead of soup/wings. I have tried almost every single item on their lunch menu and I should say that the following are my top favorites: 1- General gau's chicken - Absolutely phenomenal (5/5) 2- Lo maine w/ beef/shrimp - Yummm (4/5) 3- Pork in garlic sauce - really tasty (4/5) 4- Eggplant chicken - (4/5) 5- Szechuan beef - average quality meat (as expected) w/ an assortment of veggies (3/5) I should say that the last time I ate there was several months ago though! Fine for basic stuff like lo mein, fried rice, egg rolls and things you can't really mess up. Stay away from more complicated fare. If you order, say, szechuan beef, you get a container of vegetables. Which is not beef. There are specks of beef mixed in, but that's not szechuan beef either. It doesn't say on the menu "Vegetables, with Special Appearance by Szechuan Beef." To give you a sense of the disproportions involved, imagine Szechuan Beef is a salad. You would want the beef to be equivalent to the amount of lettuce in your salad. Or at least some of the major vegetables. But in this case, the Szechuan Beef is equivalent to the croutons. And by the way, if you order by phone and pay with a credit card, keep your phone handy, because 9 times out of 10 they will type it in wrong and call you back five minutes later to say "Your credit card not working!" read more

Feeling pretty sick and crummy and without any food in the house, I decided to do take out. The staff was speedy. They gave me abundant food. They checked to make sure I was not a thief (which I appreciate, haha). They were sweet. The low down on the food: I asked what he suggested for soup (since I am a huge soup person), and he told me sweet and sour soup. It's essentially your typical Chinese American sweet and sour soup...but with LOTS of stuff. I love chunky-ish soups (to be fair, they give more than normal Chinese restaurants). I also got the beef teriyaki (to die for...taste like yummy sweetness), the pork fried rice (it's for those days when you want something a little bit more special than your white rice...but you don't want your fried rice-- and not too oil-y). I also love their spicy garlic eggplant! Not only does the sauce taste exactly how I wanted it to taste (not too spicy, but the right kick)-- it includes bell peppers, water chestnuts, bamboo, and cat ear mushroom. This was one of the worst experiences I've had. The owner looked at us like she hated us from the moment we walked in. They have their 14 yo daughter taking orders and she couldn't speak above a whisper, she didn't know the menu well, and she was just generally unfriendly in that she never smiled or made eye contact or acknowledged when you said something. When the older owner brought our food, she literally raised a plate a foot off the table and dumped fortune cookies onto the table such that they tumbled across the table. My wife and I just looked at each other like 'wtf is wrong with this bitch?' When I asked her for 2 to-go boxes, I got the same 'go fuck yourself' look. I'm generally an understanding person, so I was just assuming that she was having a bad day - maybe her car got dinged or maybe she's fighting with her husband that day, idk? But then my wife mentioned that it might be because she doesn't like the fact that my wife (who is Filipino but looks Chinese) and I are together. And I honestly think that is what was going on. I've had other friends who've had similar experiences of blatant mistreatment because of race at Chinese restaurants. Obv there's no way I can be sure, but it really made a lot of sense to me. Are you looking for groundbreaking, high-end, Asian fusion? You are? Then you are in the wrong place! Rose's is perfect for Americanized Chinese fast food delivery. The food is consistent, tasty, and the service is fast. You definitely get a lot of food for your money. I love the different choices of combinations you can get and the menu has everything you could want. I love the Peking Ravioli's, the General Tso's chicken, and the veggie lo mein. I would steer clear of the sushi and the pad Thai as I have always found both of those to be a bit underwhelming. The delivery is always super fast, almost weirdly so. I swear they have gotten to my house within 5 minutes of ordering food and I live 5 minutes away. But anyways, I'm not complaining! I love fast service.
