Nice liitle meat shop on gregson street.. They have good variety of red meat.. I tried their lamb and turned out to be fresh and tender.. I noticed a long queue for their sweets counter.. May be try it next time. read more

A bit pricey but you get for what you pay for. Amazing quality meat and great desserts. Haven't eaten there but he menu looks spot on as well read more

I'm visiting my hometown Durham from Maryland. My brother-in-law told me about this place. He was right!--- this was the best chocolate buttermilk cake!!! I'm glad I came. read more

Last year I went as soon as they opened and they had such an awesome variety of meat, veggies and vegan options. I was here a couple of weeks ago and as a vegetarian could only eat 2 things on the menu. Everything has pork in it. I wish the chef would show some variety. Won't be coming back until the menu is expanded. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Durham. I live within 3 miles of downtown and we love all the variety around us. I was skeptical first coming here a year or so ago but we've been probably a dozen times and it's always been great. I like that the menu changes. It's has a real asian comfort food feeling to me, and I'm Vietnamese. The house made noodles are always my favorite, along with the pork buns. My fiancé always gets the ramen. It's also fun to pick out a dessert at the end, although the ice cream sandwiches to go are our usual. The employees care about their work and I feel like the owners care about their employees. Good for them for having more limited hours. Keep up the great food, Roses! read more

My interest is in the sweets side of the shop. Definitely try Katie's almond cookies. They are like little white clouds of almond essence! All of the sweets are great but I particularly love the cookies. Gingerbread, shortbread, almond... if only I could justify letting myself eat them more often. read more

So we will start here, with three stars. The sweets were quality and the meat case looked clean and very fresh. If you have never seen a real butcher shop then the meat shapes and colors will not necessarily look familiar. When meat is fresh its deep red and the fat is ivory in color. Prices seem high for some people but that could well be due to the ingredient cost (good quality butter, quality local fruit, etc). I hope a place like this does not get too big for its britches and go south. I have been in the restaurant industry for years and I can see, taste, and feel the potential. read more

I love this place. I wish I had known about the ramen Wednesday sooner, since I was only able to eat it three times while living in the triangle. The ramen is delicious and can take 15-20 minutes at times to make because they put quality and care into every bowl. Don't worry, while you wait you can figure out what desert(s) you want. Maybe even eat an earl grey ice cream and ginger snap sandwich as an appetizer. Cream puff is something I get every time. read more

Long wait to get a table. Extremely long wait for our food. Finally got our food and it was mediocre.

Probably my favorite place for ramen desserts are amazing without a doubt definitely recommend

I really like Rose's. We kept going there for the sausages (which are wonderful, if pricy), but when we tried the desserts we did a 180º, and now primarily go for the sweets. Her profiteroles are to die for. I've brought them to Seattle and to California as presents, and they really are killer. Same with the cookies - her almond paste cookies make waves, and the ginger cookies are a personal favorite. These cookies are now famous in Miami, Mexico and Seattle. And the caramels are gorgeous. These desserts are desserts you really can't find elsewhere. And they make great presents when you're traveling or as contributions to dinner parties ;) The meats LOOK gorgeous, but honestly we're priced out there. We get the sausages for fun occasions, and love them. And props to them for selling pate and terrine - something I don't see anywhere else in Durham. read more

Awesome meat shop! These guys know what they're talking about. Meat is fresh, always grills to perfection, and staff is friendly and knowledgable. read more

Delicious baked goods and good quality meat. I can't drive by without stopping in for some macarons or toffee.

Cool vibe. Food looked great. Ours was not good. Not as described by server. Noodles were insanely salty. Have heard good things from friends, but we won't be returning. read more

Vegetarians beware the meat here will turn you. It's amazing how much better it can be than the stuff we buy at even high end grocery stores. This place is fantastic and they sell dessert too! Durham needed this place. read more

I am pleasantly surprised about their food!! I am usually not a huge fan of fusion food. But this place blow my mind away. At first I was kinda confused. Is this place a desert shop or a no kidding ramen place? It turned out they really do have both!!! I gave only four stars because I didn't get to try their desert and can't fairly judge the whole restaurant. But let me tell you, their ramen is good!!! If you are hoping for the salty typical ramen then sorry to disappoint you. Their ramen is perfectly cook with rich broth and not salty like most traditional Japanese styles. I ordered their tonkotsu ramen and their gyoza. Their gyoza was also different and good. I thought it was the typical pan fried gyoza but instead they boiled it and put it in some sour sauce. The fillings were really unexpected too. Pork and shrimp and veggies which include corn, Something I don't expect to be in a gyoza filling but it worked. Overall very pleased with the food. Wish the place is a bit bigger. We went at 2:30pm on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed!!! read more

If you want to be seated at a table (in your late third trimester of pregnancy, no less), ignored for 15 minutes as the table next to you is cleared, wiped down, another couple seated and then immediately given water (we hadn't even gotten that in the 15 minutes) and waited on as the wait staff pretend you don't even exist, go here. Otherwise, go to one of the many of the other fine restaurants in Durham where empathy and common decency exist. read more

I really wanted to like this place - think its a great concept and I love having another source for local products. However, I special ordered a pork belly, skin off, with a couple days notice. When I went in to pick it up, the person helping clarified again with me that I wanted the skin off. I was looking around while they packaged it - woops. I was charged for skin off, which is more by the pound than skin on. When I got home, I noticed the skin was in fact on. I guess he just didnt feel like taking it off - again, I had specially ordered it skin off and repeated skin off when I was in. The extra charge doesn't make that big of a difference to me - its the complete disrespect I was showed by them trying to slip one on me. Great product isn't enough - have some respect. I hope their customer service improves for everyone else's benefit, but they have lost my business forever. read more

Rose's has got to be one of the best places in Durham. I can't say enough nice things about it. I went there twice in one day for crying out loud. Now truth be told, I was riding my bike around downtown Durham and finally decided to stop in to see what the place was all about and didn't have a great way to carry back all that I wanted in a backpack so I came back later in my car to pick up the rest. The first thing I noticed about the shop was how clean it was. Spotless! Which is of course a big deal in a place that butchers it's own meat and makes its own pastries. Next thing I noticed was the meat behind the glass. It wasn't like you'd see at a grocery store where everything is crammed in there with no space between one item and the next. Each item has it's own space and you can clearly see what you'll be buying and they all look amazing. I picked up some bardiccio (sp?)sausage first since it was all I could carry on the bike but I wanted to buy one of every other cut of meat I saw but had to resist unfortunately. Next to catch my eye were the pastries. Not a ton to choose from which is fine with me because the ones I got were out of this world delicious!!! Some of the best desserts I've had in a long LONG time. And last but not least, the owners and employees need mentioning. They have to be some of the nicest people at any food establishment around here. My wife and I have noticed that some of the places you go eat around Durham, the owners and some of their employees just don't seem to really care whether you are there or not. I mean, you chose to work in a service industry and being nice and friendly should just be part of your job description. The lady and gentlemen at Rose's definitely do NOT need to be reminded of that. The husband, while busy butchering something back behind the counter wasn't too busy to talk to me quickly about the sausage selection and the guys working with them were as nice as could be. The wife/amazing pastry chef remembered me when I came back later in my car and thanked me for actually coming back. Stuff like that goes a long way with me and I would think most other people as well. Do yourself a favor and go check them out sometime and I promise you will not regret it. I just can't wait to take the Little Wife back for some lunch or dinner sometime soon. read more

Roses Meats and Sweets is an absolute favorite of mine! Their meat is as good as it gets (sourced from local farms) and it is cut to order. In addition to great cuts of meat they also have a rotating selection of charcuterie and sausage. They make really great pastrami, ham, bacon, and pate. On top of all of that they also serve my favorite sandwiches in Durham. I have never gone wrong with anything purchased here. The prices are comprable to other locally-raised meat (ex. the durham farmers market), but the butchery is absolutely of much higher quality. The combination of well raised animals and top quality butchering is incredibly hard to come by and I feel very lucky to have this shop nearby. read more

A friend and I visited the Shop for the first time on 12/14. As we looked at the offerings in the meat case, no one asked if we needed assistance or had questions. We walked down to the sweet section and the girl working there looked at us and walked off. This was the final straw. We drove to The Meat House in Cary and spent our money there. We found a better selection of meats (6 kinds of bacon!, pork, beef, chicken, various kinds of "pop in the oven and say you did it" entrees, etc.), lots of NC items (sauces, honey, cakes, etc.), friendly and knowledgeable staff, and an excellent bakery right next door! The Meat House received our business on Saturday and will continue to receive our business and that of everyone we tell about our wonderful experience there! Update: This is what the owners sent in a private message: "First off we are sorry that you were not given proper attention when in the shop, very rarely if ever does anyone not get a hello right when they walk in. We created the shop to be a big open space in order to take down any barriers between us and our customers. I am the girl "that just looked at you" and I apologize for not stopping to help you but I am sure that I assumed that you were just looking for the moment otherwise I would have stopped and helped you. Or maybe I figured that one of the guys had already spoken with you? The simple fact is that if you really wanted us to help you you could have stepped up to the register or said excuse me and we would have been happy to help. We have a really small staff and we are always working on projects. Customers are of course always our top priority but sometimes we mess up and get lost in our work. We hope that you will come back and give us a second try. All of our meat is local and pasture raised. We make everything in house. I know we do not have the selection of the meat house but they are a large chain and get their meat shipped in from all over. We are a small business, working hard everyday to make the best products we can. I really don't think that it is fair of you to judge us your experience or bash us on your other review. Calling your experience at our shop horrible is not only unfair but also untrue. We didn't do anything horrible to you at all what it all comes down to is a misunderstanding. We will work on our counter attention and that is something we can take away from this review." This was my private reply: "Since you read the other review, you know I didn't say anything there that I didn't say here. The fact that you found the review unfair is your perception, just like the fact that I found my experience horrible was mine. However, my friend and I both noted that people who came in after us were welcomed. I hope you noted that in your response to me, you had a lot of excuses as to why y'all were less than cordial. I'm glad that you're going to use this review as a teaching moment. I hope you use ALL of your lower reviews as such. By the way, even though The Meat House is a chain, it also uses local vendors. You should stop by." This was their private reply: "One excuse... we had our heads down, didn't hear you come in. You gave us one star for not saying hello. We've been to the Meat House. It's factory farmed meat from the midwest, that also sells local products, that not what we stand for." You see their public snit below. For the record, I love small businesses. I OWN a small business. However, just because you are a small business doesn't mean you get my money for crappy service. As a small business you also have to understand that you have to go the extra mile... and if that means saying, "hello," you say hello! I do find it interesting that the owners didn't get that upset nor did they use this public forum to dispute their other 1 & 2 star reviews. Nothing to the person whose order they got wrong and they overcharged or the person who said they were basically nasty, both the shop and their attitudes? Priorities, anyone?? If good service means supporting a chain, I'm lovin' The Meat House! :oD read more

We spent lots of our weekends at Rose's finding the perfect cut of meat. The shop staff are super helpful at helping my indecisive husband! For our wedding, we stuffed their caramel's in our hotel goodie bags. Our guests LOVED them. We love Rose's! read more

We enjoyed our lunch--especially the steamed pork bun!--but it was the baked goods that were the star of the show. The cream puffs are seriously the most amazing thing I have ever eaten, and we come back from them alone. read more

Have explored the menu extensively. House-made noodles, steamed bun, fried pork sandwich are favorites. If you miss dinner(kitchen closes most nights at 5pm) they serve sweets and ice cream sandwiches(which are incredible) until closing. read more

If you don't love this place ... well, I'm not sure what would be wrong with you, but something would be quite off-balance. Both sides of the store are wonderful - the sweets are top-drawer (delicate, flaky, nuanced, fresh, wholesome, rich, flavorful, just plain ol' delish) and the meats are outstanding (local, grass fed, natural, healthy, tasty, savory, and also just plain delish) Justin and Katie are charming and all the 'help' are helpful, friendly and well informed. Rose's is one of those rare places where everyone seems happy to be working there and loving what they do. You can call ahead for special orders (Tell Justin I'd like a couple of thick NY strips set aside for me and ask Katie to keep some mochi cakes and cream puffs on the back table - I'll be there at 5:30) or you can just wander in and point... be prepared to make it a habit because you will be back! I've never had lunch there but I can only imagine .... read more

This place is a godsend. Of what I've had, I'd say their beef is an 8.5/10, their pork is an 11/10, and the sweets are a 12/10. My favorites are the pork collar steaks and the almond cakes, almond paste cookies and caramels. The sandwiches and dinners also have not disappointed yet- definitely give it a try when they do ribs. They also have a great selection of sauces, spices, pickled stuff, etc. Anyone who knows about Rose's and is still buying meat at whole foods for the same price or maybe sometimes just a couple bucks less, needs to have their head examined. Rose's seriously makes living in Durham at least 10% better. Please, take all my money. read more

I absolutely love the renovation! Before I would stop in for the occasional pastry and meat but now it will be one of my go to restaurants for lunch. Delicious, homemade and affordably priced. The sausage sandwich was remarkable and with a coffee and cream puff you can't go wrong! read more

Friendly staff and cute building but there are a lot of cons. No seating area and high prices for little portions. I got some cookies here and they were good but not worth price. It's good to support a local business but some of the pricing is ridiculous. read more

I really want to try one of the sandwiches! I had already eaten that morning so could only manage a tea with a chocolate tart. The place was bustling, in fact people kept showing up for takeaway every few minutes or so. The pastry selection was a bit limited but they also had interesting flavors or ice cream and interesting fusion sandwiches. Will definitely come back here. read more

Terrible experience. We arrived and were told there would be a 20 minute wait. They were crowded. The table they were going to put us at had a group that stayed there long after finishing the meal. Understandably, the staff told us they couldn't seat us until the group left. After about a 35 minute wait, the group left. A waitress then took a different group to that table (a group that came in after us). We asked her about it, and she said they had another table for us that they just had to clean. We waited another 10 mins, and asked her again. She then tried to blame the other group for sitting at that table without asking, and claiming she was uncomfortable asking them to get up (which was a blatant lie). Since it had been an hour, and we were all quite hungry, we left. I would stay away from any place with this HORRIBLE customer service. read more

Ate at the new Roses today. We got the Katsu Curry Rice Bowl and the Hot Pastrami Sandwich and the Fried Curry Rice Salad. Wow for all three. Everything tasted incredible. And of course each thing was impeccably presented. So great to have a place with such high standards on everything...taste, presentation. And the new dining area is simple, elegant and classy. Can't wait to go back to try the rest of the menu. read more

Sometimes the hours of Rose's are not the most convenient, but when I can get here from Chapel Hill, I love every second of it. The care put into the savory items is felt in every bite. And the bakery will never disappoint. The white miso gingersnap ice cream sandwich will blow you away! read more

I want to like this place because it is great to have a nice butcher shop so close to home, but the selection/service/vibe/product just didn't do it for me. It is cute in there and they have a variety of interesting cuts of meat on display, but the "bacon brats" we purchased were just... bad. Dry, mealy, with a limited flavor profile. We consider ourselves pretty good at preparing brats, having grown up in Wisconsin, and these ones defied all of our tricks for deliciousness. Perhaps this is a one-off event, but at almost $3 per sausage I expected to like then more than Johnsonville! Additionally, the proximity of baked goods to raw meat in their store seemed a little icky. I'm sure they receive high marks for sanitation, but the concept of meats and sweets is off-putting to me. read more

Rose's is perfect. No need to read more reviews - run -don't walk- down there immediately.

To-die-for gingersnaps, my husband's favorite cookie. And I was able to purchase some pure-white rendered lard for cooking special dishes.

Never been disappointed here -- from unique sausages to tasty pastries and ice cream sandwiches, and even a few nice meal options. We will go to Rose's any day! read more

Love this place! A tad pricey but quality food. Oh my gosh.... Their ice cream sanwiches are out if this world

Local GEM located near Brightleaf. The sausages are always great and the daily sandwiches are always tasty!

We love the chocolate covered cream puffs here so much we ordered 175 mini cream puffs for our wedding in lieu of a wedding cake. Not only were they absolutely delicious, but Rose's staff was easy to work with on the logistics of ordering, payment, and pick up from our events manager. read more
