Quick Summary: Jim runs an exceptionally professional business, and I would gladly hire him again…read morefor any job to improve my household. He is an excellent communicator, and his workers were not only courteous but very skilled at their respective jobs. He was able to finish my basement in a timely manner with high-quality materials. I could not be happier with the work Brown's Custom Contracting did within my home. Detailed Summary of My Experience: I contacted Jim initially just to get an estimate for finishing my basement, which was in a state that needed major work because the walls were made of cinderblock and the floors were complete concrete; it was a space that was probably best used for storage and I would not call it "comfortably livable." Jim arrived quickly for an estimate and helped me explore the possibilities of the space, even going so far as to note what would be difficult or expensive to pull off. Within days he provided an estimate for the job, which I found out during the process was a major ordeal involving many phases and individuals, so I'm impressed he was able to produce a price so quickly (and in the end it was an accurate price). I signed Jim up for the job because of his straightforward and pleasant attitude. In the weeks and months that followed (this was a major job, I want to note), Jim gave me frequent updates about what workers I could expect to come by and when/how-long they would be there. Every person who came onto the property was skilled and good about communicating what they would be working on, especially when they had questions about the possibilities of the space. Jim also handled all of the work involving the permits and he worked with the county to ensure everything was up to code. He also alerted me any time there was a change in plans or if there was a possibility of delay. Given how involved this basement-finish job was, there were plenty of opportunities for major hurdles, but the project was still completed in a timely manner, and it was always clear to me what was going on, what would happen next, etc. The final product is everything I could've wanted. Jim made efficient use of the space to make as much of it "comfortably livable" as possible. Even the water heater and HVAC unit were relocated with no diminishment in functionality just for the sake of making the basement as good as it could possibly be. I'm very pleased with the additional space my family has been given, and there isn't a single rough edge in the room. Jim's guys are the best and I highly recommend his service to anyone looking to improve their homes. I have included pictures of the job before and after just so you can see the quality of work.

However, nothing worked so he came the next day and brought a new hydraulic brake for the storm door. Chris tried hard to not have to replace the existing brake, but in the end, it had to be replaced. I can't say enough good things about Chris. He genuinely wants to help you without having you spend a lot of money. I really appreciate that. It's rare to find someone who would rather help you for free over the phone than to have you spend money if possible. That speaks volumes about Chris. He is very knowledgeable about the structure of your home being a contractor. He is highly skilled, very friendly and very reasonable. I would not hesitate to use Chris again and again for all my handyman needs. He is reliable, on time and will try to save you money whenever he can. I highly recommend Chris for any handyman work. He'll get the job done right at a great price.

There were a couple items on the list that provided a bit of a challenge for him because they were finicky, but he persevered and took care of everything with a great attitude and expertise. If you are looking for a company to help you with a couple items on your to do list, definitely give them a call. Chris was professional and knowledgeable, but also incredibly friendly and pleasant to work with. I will absolutely be using this company again for all of my handyman and small job related needs at my primary residence, as well as my rental property. The best part is, it's always great to support a locally owned small business!

DO NOT under any circumstance work with this company. It's 1 thing for the manager to be too lazy…read moreto provide a quote, but to call a client and antagonize them for 15 minutes before conducting business is crazy. I reached out via email per the receptionist via email on Thursday, I was told that there would be a 24 hour turn around. This was not the case. Someone responded a day later with questions. I provided the necessary info and requested a call. No one called. I got another email that seemed as though there was a misunderstanding with the documents. I called and requested a call back from the owner or manager no contact. My client was under an inspection contingency and was at risk of loosing her EMD so I kept calling to no avail. I later got an email stating that one portion would be $7,500. I told him that was fine as we just needed a quote for the rest and to give me a call. I informed him that we had every intention of using their services via email as I wanted them to understand that this was not in vain. Each email took a day to respond despite me responding to their inquiries instantaneously The bank was to disburse the funds directly to this company, as soon as next week once the repairs were submitted the amount was not an issue as this was a fix and flip. We just needed a reliable contractor. On monday with an expired contingency that we had to have renewed at the last minute, I sent yet another email to have someone call me as this was becoming a waste of time. I even called the front desk demanding a call back as I never received one despite numerous calls Alan contacted me immediately after I sent an email letting him know that he was wasting my time. However this was not a call to conduct business, it was to antagonize me. He accused me of not being a real client, stating that I was using him to get a quote. He was very patronizing and I felt that he was trying to get a reaction out of me. I explained to him that I do alot of business an I just need a contractor in Baltimore. I kept asking can we move forward with the business portion. But not until he kept going. He then said that he works with agents but "dosen't know me." However he never returned my call requests to get to know me. I told him that the bank was waiting on the quote to disburse funds. He kept going and going. He said he would send a rough estimate and notate the document. Then he said he would not do an official quote he would send a quick email with the amount. I explained again that we needed an official quote. Then said he needed to see the property, I asked why is he saying this 5 days later? He then said that I didn't give MY client's name, (he never asked.) The receptionist said to "just send the inspection items over" I asked why he never said anything over the past 5 days. He then retaliated by saying that he wouldn't do the quote. At this point I was Livid! This guy was unreal. I asked if he was the owner, and told him that he is costing the owner money with his antics. I began to look up the business online and did not see it registered. I asked for the owner's name he refused. I asked if this was a DBA he said yes but refused to give me the info. Needless to say I snapped. Then he proceeded to write a 5 paragraph email to cover his trail as he was afraid of what I would say should I come in contact with the owner. I attempted to contact the owner again by calling an hour later as I was told that he would be in "in the afternoon" and he intercepted the call. Which was strange because I called MULTIPLE times and asked for a manager to no avail. He just wanted to upset me even more and I fed into it. Now he's sending me back to back long winded emails to threaten me and cover his tracks. This guy is an absolute clown. Now he is threatening to defame my business for posting my review and I will have my Attorney ALL OVER it. I am sure that the owner has worked hard to build his business but THIS has been unreal! I have given Alan official notice to refrain from contacting me however he continues to send me threatening emails. The most recent email even suggested that I must send correspondence to him to contact the manager. And I will not.
