I say this with the tenderest of hearts. In 2022-2024, Root and Bone used to be my favorite restaurant. When I first ate at R&B the carrots that came with an entree was THE item I knew there was a chef back there. The blend of seasoning was intentional and the choice of every vegetable with the sauce on the Chicken on the Brick (or something similar ) was only created by someone who knew how to blend flavors and not follow a recipe. That kitchen was run by a chef. The meatloaf, the ribs, the fries , the pot pie, the shrimp and grits. Wow. Just wow. Brava to the chef. My recent experience was similar to visiting an ex and realizing things can never be the same. We got the burger. And fries that were defrosted. No seasoning. I could have gone to McDonald's for better. Everything was a cookie cutter resemblance of a sub par version of what Root and Bone aspired to be and ONCE WAS. I hope the owners Janine and Jeff read this. You had a jem. Please don't sacrifice true artistry and those moments that make you pause at the first bite and taste every flavor and layer. They make the price worth it. In the past, I left there thinking "wow I would have paid more for that " to " McDonald's fries were better. And Cheaper." I wish this restaurant the best but honestly: thank you for being the new standard I compare any chef to. Unfortunately, things aren't the same. This cute corner Broad Ripple restaurant was everything I wished it would be and I am so thrilled I finally had a chance to check it out! Upon walking in, you are greeted with a warm welcome of diverse staff (diversity is key). We went before a concert (around 5p) so it was early and they had plenty of seating. Once the evening settled, it was packed so ensure you make reservations through Open Table if you are planning to go during the weekend. We had the biscuits and broth as a starter. It was a beautiful combo. The sea salt and fennel seeds were a perfect twist to this classic. I ordered the Shrimp & Grits and baby when I tell you they were everything...I am not lying. I've had a lot of Shrimp & Grits and this version is definitely on my top 3. My man ordered catfish and he thoroughly enjoyed it. My sister ordered the fried chicken but unfortunately it had to be sent back because food temp was not right. However, our waitress immediately apologized and came back with piping hot chicken..it was a hit! I had some of that as well..yes, I am greedy. My sister in law had the meatloaf and she stated it was stellar. It was my mans bday so we took a dessert on the house to go. It was a brownie with toffee caramel sauce and it didn't disappoint once we warmed that sucka up the next day. Some of the food appears to be a cross between sushi and tapas with the American south standing firmly behind it. The parking is practically impossible: small alleys narrow road that seems characteristic of the neighborhood. I recommend making reservations on the weekend if you want to sit with your feet in the ground. 6:15 pm Friday U was seated with no wait at the bar. I had a perfectly cooked medium rare steak and some corn casserole to write home about. Chocolate martinis, or something like that(I don't drink) were popular with the customers who were seated at the bar. Katy answered the phone when I called asking about a table. She was very personable and reassured me to come in and she would have a table, she did and 3 of us had a very nice time here. This is a bacon and pork fat kind of place. I had an old fashioned with bacon bourbon and a piece of pork belly. The brussel sprouts had bacon and I believe my sons shrimp and grits had some too! We like bacon and we certainly liked everything we had on this visit. My wife and I split the whole bird fried chicken. The light breading on the bird really makes it! My girlfriend took my here for my birthday. It's super cute inside, like a modern southern kitchen. They have a small parking lot. The place is decent sized and also has bar seating. The food is upscale southern home cooking. We opted for the deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes to start. They were both different and interesting, with unique deliciousness contained within. We shared a half rack of the bbq bruleed spare ribs which were fall off the bone! They were so good. The summer squash casserole was exactly as expected, cheesey and gooey! The mozzarella cheese, bacon, and home made pickled items. I was surprised to eat pork rinds at a restaurant, but they were tasty. Definitely recommend this small plate to share with your friends. Next, we ordered the fried green tomato BLT appetizer and it was perfect. Yum! Definitely recommend. I enjoyed the old fashion cocktail and my friend had a delicious margarita. I love this place! I have a friend who has been living in the Indianapolis area for a while that suggested I go here and I was not disappointed. Both of the chefs here have some awesome accolades, including being on Top Chef and also getting James Beard nominations. When moving to Indianapolis, that was something I was worried about was the lack of good food scene. First of all, the decor is adorable. Everything looks so Southern and coastal but fashionably done. Our server was great, he made her comfortable he answered all of her questions, and he even kept our three-year-old daughter entertained while he was at the table. We got the La Ferria, the old fashioned, and the Pina Perfect. I'd say La Ferria was my favorite. As for food, we got so much: pickle jar as an appetizer, Parmesan roasted cauliflower, the Mac and cheese, chicken under a brick and giant bone on beef rib. I'm just mad at myself that it took me this long to try this wonderful restaurant in my neighborhood! I think the reason I was turned away is because I don't love friend food and I know southern cooking tends to have a lot of that. Decor inside is great- I wish I would have snapped a photo. Started off with the old fashioned which was very delicious with hints of maple. Then I switched over to a delicious cab for my main meal. We got the ceviche and hush puppies for the table. Like I said I don't love fried food , but I'm always going to try everything. The hush puppies were the best I've ever had and I loved the sauce that came with them. The ceviche was very delicious. My only complaint for the entire night would be that the tarp chips that came with the ceviche mainly were crumb size, not big enough to actually enjoy the ceviche. You'd have to use a fork then sprinkle the tarp chips on top. We had maybe 4 normal size chips- hoping maybe we just got the bottom of a bag. I'd still order this dish again though, the flavors were great. Others at the table got fried green tomatoes, their chicken and biscuit sandwich and salads. I also tried the fried chicken and biscuit sandwich- it was incredible! I'll order that next time for sure! I had the wedge salad and added grilled chicken. Given the prior positive experiences, we wanted to treat an out-of-town relative to a nice meal at Root and Bone. After we were seated, the waitress explained how the menu had been redesigned. She had tried everything on the menu and was impressed. Asking for a recommendation, the waitress heartily endorsed the cedar-planked salmon. Our relative ordered the salmon. Our relative took three bites of the salmon and then asked, "Is this raw?" It was. Our relative showed the waitress, who took the poorly cooked item back to the kitchen, and promised to return with a new dish of salmon and carrots. Minutes later, a new dish was delivered. Our relative took a fork and inspected the salmon. It was more raw than the previous dish! Chef Ramsey would have been screaming at the Chef for this lack of attentiveness. Our relative talked to the manager, who "comped" the meal, apologized, took the nasty-looking salmon away, and brought out a requested (and very safe) appetizer. The waitress stopped by later to check on us. After learning a second dish had to be returned, she commented, "That is disappointing." No verbal apology from her was ever given - just a "comped meal." What was disappointing was to invite our relative to a highly regarded restaurant, follow a recommendation, and then be served two unacceptable dishes. Skip the salmon! read more

This place is a must try. We sampled so many hits at this trendy spot in Broadripple. We had pretty good service but our server didn't really know their drink selection well. It worked out since we knew the flavor profiles we liked. The husband ordered the chicken which he hummed through while eating. It was perfectly fried and tender. He also ordered the ribs and fries which he said were worth a trip back for. I had the shrimp and grits which were good but not good enough for a reorder and a side of biscuits. I would order those again. For an appetizer we ordered the bacon platter. It had a lot going on and I found myself only eating the cheese and pickled peppers. Root & Bone has been on my list forever and I finally had a chance to go Thursday night! I am happy to confirm, it is as good as everyone has been saying. They seem to have launched their summer cocktail list and I had a mango refresher which did make me think of summer even though it is still wanting to be a blustery spring here. It fit the name, by being refreshing, light and not too sweet. I was there with a friend and we decided to split a number of things, and I highly recommend this approach. We started with the deviled eggs which were both pretty and delicious! We shared a wedge salad; the serving is two huge wedges with lots of toppings so this is definitely meant to be shared unless someone is not eating much else. The lettuce was crisp with lots of yummy toppings. We then shared a rack of the bruleed ribs and a side of mac and cheese. The ribs were so tender and the sauce was delicious! The peppers are a little spicy which was great in my book, but if you're spice averse, they can probably leave them off. The mac and cheese was rich and wonderful; there was so much cheese it actually stretched out of the dish when we scooped it with the spoon. We had enough to each take home some ribs and mac and cheese for another dinner each. For dessert, we shared the key lime creme brulee and it was excellent; also definitely a shareable size, particularly after all that other food. I liked the graham cracker crust on the bottom along with the delightfully crisp sugar coating over the creamy custard. They did it just right! Service was good, but they were very busy; we had a reservation for 6PM on a Thursday and were very glad we did; they were full shortly after we arrived. The servers were moving fast, each handling a lot of tables, but we were seated on time and food came out at a pace that enabled us to enjoy each course. Everyone was friendly and knew the menu well. Heads up that the menu on their website doesn't match the current one in the restaurant; there is some overlap, but a fair number of what appear to be seasonal changes; I mean both menus looked amazing, but just be sure not to get your heart set on one item you see on the website! Fire time visitor! We had a large group prior to a wedding and the staff was extremely accommodating and got us in and out pretty quickly. Our table started out with an order of deviled eggs as an appetizer. They were delicious and well flavored. I split a farmers salad and the chicken biscuit with a friend. The biscuit was AMAZING! I tried to get a picture of it but turned out too blurry because I was so excited to get a bite in! The salad was very refreshing and just the right amount of dressing. We have dined at Root and Bone three times now. It's easy to order off the menu if you have any sort of allergy as allergens are clearly noted or noted as they can be prepared without an allergen. There's something here for everyone even though it is a 'southern' restaurant - vegan, pescatarian, gluten-free etc. It's not entirely meat heavy. The service has always been quite pleasant and prompt. I find this a triumph considering the staffing shortages caused by covid. They do take reservations and I would recommend reserving for weekend evenings. The mixed drinks are always delicious. Last night my husband ordered some sort of mango drink.... so refreshing. I am unable to eat gluten but there were still plenty of options for me. The shrimp and grits have tons of flavor and are quite filling. It includes sausage. Normally it is made with beer but was modified for the allergy. They don't skimp on the shrimp either. My husband recently ordered the half rack of spare ribs. They are tender and juicy. I could cut the meat easily off the bone. The sauce is messy. Be prepared. You will need a side item to round out this entree. Went to Root & Bone with a friend. We were going to go to the Gallery Pastry Shop, but, there was a 1 hour wait and we failed to get a reservation ahead of time. While my company was great, Root & Bone was OK. She had a Bloody Mary and biscuits and gravy. The Mary hit the spot and the biscuits and gravy were OK. She did not finish them. Egg looked a little overcooked. I wasn't in the mood for a hefty Southern meal, so I opted for a simpler "traditional American" breakfast with potatoes, eggs and bacon. Scrambled eggs were dry, grits were fine, breakfast potatoes had too many onions in it for my taste. My favorite part of the dish was the tomato jam on the side. I hate bell peppers of any color and they were rife throughout the plate, which was not mentioned on the menu, so I had to disassemble a few things. Bacon was good. I also had a mimosa. I suppose the stars of the shows are the heftier meals, such as chicken and waffles. I just wasn't feeling it on this day. I'd give it another try for dinner or if I was in the mood for a heavier brunch. I also realized I'm getting old because I verbalized my concern with how loud the restaurant is. It's a lovely restaurant, but, they have nothing in place to absorb the sound. Gotta fix that. Not easy for those of us with hearing challenges or people who use hearing aids. Host and server were friendly. Server sort of dropped off once we prepared to pay and we said "thank you" for the check but she never thanked us for coming in. I hate that. They should be thanking us! Also noticed the staff were spraying tables with cleaner and not spraying it directly to the towels instead. Stopped in here on a Sunday afternoon for light bites and drinks. The farmhouse charm and details were everywhere - from the lighting and blue patterned plates to the tap beer handles! Ordered the Crab Cakes, Chicken Sliders and an Old Fashioned. The Old Fashioned was well balanced and had an extra touch of thick cut bacon alongside the Luxardo cherry. Of the two dishes, the Chicken Sliders were the standout. Perfectly fried chicken was nestled between a homemade biscuit with homemade pickles and pickled onions. The biscuit was buttery and crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. At the table was a nice condiment touch of hot honey - which paired perfectly with the sliders. The crab cakes were on the small side and could have used more crab. The spicy slaw on the side was delicious. The angle biscuits with the honey chicken jus were amazing, so much so, we got a to go order for our son. The chicken was super moist, the skillet was tasty, the grits were buttery, and the coffee good. We had a reservation at 11 am and the tiny parking lot was full already. The entrees were ok. My fish (compared to salmon) was just ok the okra was slimy and the lack of seasoning was really disappointing. Great spot for brunch as they have a great variety of both lunch and breakfast options. They do not have a plethora of one while minimal of the other. The brunch menu is also much more affordable than their dinner menu, so if you would like to treat yourself without feeling the bill this is a great time to go! We made a reservation on open table and I highly suggest this for weekend brunch as this place does get busy. Only negative I have was that their eggs Benedict was extremely small in comparison to other dishes at the table. Chicken and waffles, chicken sandwiches, all excellent sized and filling. The eggs Benedict was what I would consider a half portion. One egg on an English muffin served with an underwhelming portion of salad. For a small eater this may work but quite frankly for an average eater this had us wishing we had ordered something different.
