Unfortunately, I can't recommend Root & Bone. I love SoBro and all the great new places that have come up here in the last few years. So I really wanted to like this place. I will say the space is nice and the servers were all friendly. We got to sit outside on a nice, summery evening, which was great, too. But the food was truly mediocre. I originally ordered the Butternut Squash. Our server took the order, but then returned to tell me that the cooks had reminded her that they don't have good squash so what else would I like. However, she didn't bring a menu with her. After some verbal back and forth, I settled on the Bric Chicken. My friend had the "meatloaf". The chicken itself was fine. The carrots that came with it though were raw. And I don't mean undercooked. I mean they could not be cut with a knife. I had to pick them up and chomp them Bugs Bunny style. The meatloaf is in quotes on the menu because it's pulled rib meat and not loaf. Not bad, but definitely a unique take and again, fairly mediocre. The bill was high for raw carrots and we weren't check on much during or stay. It was very much a Denny's level of experience both in quality of food and level of service. Came here for my birthday dinner with my family and loved the vibes. You can feel the southern charm but it's still modern. The first time I went here, I didn't love it. But I came back and I'm so glad I did. I realize I didn't order the best things on the menu. The ribs were so good--tender, delicious barbecue sauce, little peppers on it that gave it a little kick that was perfect. Not too spicy but a little punch. The fried chicken was also very good. But you want to know what really sealed the deal for me? This sounds crazy but it was the mashed potatoes. I still think about them--they were creamy and whipped and I'm not sure I've ever had better. They also have fun cocktails and delicious desserts. But get the potatoes! read more

Update: Our entrees arrived and we had held out hope but the salad was soggy, swimming in dressing and the grilled peaches lacked flavor. The shrimp and grits were acidic and lukewarm warm. The flavor of the dish was not balanced as it was so acidic it made the flavor of the cooked shrimp taste rancid. Also, the egg on the grits was not over medium. I had asked for an over medium egg with the whites fully cooked, meaning absolutely no liquid white egg whites. This translated to the over easy egg with white cut away however the whites that remained around the yolk were still runny. So, I just put the egg on the rim and tried both dishes. Our waitress came over and asked about our dishes and I expressed my disappointment. She hurried away and had the manager come to the table. The manager was polite and offered to comp our appetizers and offered 1/2 chicken. I accepted this offer. The 1/2 chicken arrived and looked crispy but was not hot, it was warm and the chicken was crispy. I hate the leg and it was flavored well. However upon the picking up the second piece, a breast, I pulled off some crisp breading and a long human hair was firmly in the crisp batter. My husband motioned to the manager who looked at the piece with the hair, and instantly appeared embarrassed. We had a nice conversation but ultimately we chose not to try anything else. The manager did comp our entire bill and I can't express enough that the waitstaff is very attentive and this review is specific to the food alone. Initial review: We ordered the "blt" and deviled eggs as appetizers, we have t even gotten our meals yet but these are so awful I have to provide a review. The deviled eggs are lacking depth of taste and are rubber tasting and the "blt" which is made with a fried green tomato's with pork belly, tomato relish and pimento cheese.... There's nothing nice to say about this as the tomato relish is so heavy you can't taste anything else and the bacon is so chewy and not palatable. Immensely disappointing! The watermelon cocktail is tart but palatable so I gave a star. The service is good which was a bonus for this highly priced, lack luster tasting food, wish I could give one rating for staff and another for food. read more

First off, ambience was great, very nice-looking restaurant and great vibes. Service was also good, attentive waiter that had recommendations for every category we asked about. Unfortunately, the food was just ok. The biscuits that were served at the beginning were pretty good, but personally I would have liked just butter or honey, not the chicken broth and flaky salt that came with it. I was deciding between chicken and waffles and ribs and was told the ribs were the best thing on the menu, and I was disappointed. The ribs were 75% bone and weren't very tender. The meatloaf my guest got was just ok by her review. The mac and cheese we got was decent, a bit watery with most of the cheese on top and not in the noodles. I would have been fine with the quality but not at the price point. I would have rather spent the 25-30 dollars per dish somewhere else. read more

I met up with some friends from brunch at Root & Bone. At the time, our reservation for 10:30 wasn't needed as the restaurant was fairly empty, but by the time we left at 12:30 it was nearly full! We attempted to eat outside on their patio, but it was a bit windy and we were able to mov back inside. Our waitress was lovely and attentive! Constantly looking for interesting restaurants to eat we stumbled on this restaurant. It was filled to capacity when we walked in but the vibes were excellent. We arrived an hour early but the hostess did great job finding a table within 25 minutes to our surprise. Our waitress Imani took great care of us from the time we sat at the table. She answered all of our questions and made us feel like we were family. This place has a southern flare to it. That being said I ordered fried chicken and Mac n cheese. The chicken came with a spicy hot sauce and honey that took the fried chicken to another level. I ate all 4 pieces with ease! Ambiance - great; perfect date place or group dinner. Food - our 6-person group was very happy. Biscuits, fried green tomatoes and drunken deviled eggs were devoured. Hubs and I shared a whole fried chicken with cheese waffle. Service - started out great. At the end of the night we were asked if we had room for dessert but we were all stuffed. Met good friends here for brunch. It started off great with the biscuits and deviled eggs that our friends ordered for the table. The entrees were disappointing though. My friend barely touched her peach and burrata salad because of the dressing. My hubby's brunch burger wasn't well seasoned, the pimento was too tangy, and the bacon was undercooked (this is coming from someone who likes their bacon limp). The chicken and waffles I ordered had three small pieces of chicken...like almost no meat on them bones! A total of 6 bites, which was mostly skin. It had a nice crunch, and good flavor, but was too salty. The waffle was good, but didn't taste like a cheddar waffle. (Later on I realized the menu said it was supposed to come with 4 pieces of chicken! Two of us at the table ordered it, and we both got 3 pieces!) Our friends enjoyed their cocktails, so that was good. Service was slow, like it took forever to get the bill and pay the bill, but that wasn't a big deal since we were there to spend time with friends. Next time we're in Indy, we'll try definitely try somewhere else. The menu really oversold most of what we ordered with amazing descriptions and unfortunately, under delivered. Two of us went for a Saturday brunch. The biscuits were amazing and the peach burrata salad was fairly good, not over dressed but needed more beach( there were only a few small bits. We both had the chicken and waffles. The fried chicken is really good and paired well with the thick fluffy waffles. Service from a new server was a bit challenging but she was nice and they thoughtfully gave us a small bill reduction to make up for the minor serving issues. Really enjoyed our experience here, great ambiance, service, and food. The only reason why it didn't get 5 stars was because of the heavy emphasis on sweet and savory (with a lot of sweet) and I'm not a big fan of having the sweet overwhelm the savory. So I was looking for a great, non-tourist trap spot for a group dinner and this place accommodated without a minimum. The restaurant is charming, a mix of modern and southern decor. Our server was really nice, busy but very attentive. We started off with drinks, and they were all well made. We also got numerous appetizers including the deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, and the grandma's biscuits. The deviled eggs were a perfect mix of pickled tang and well cooked egg. The fried green tomato had wonderful crunch and a nice form tomato that didn't get mushy with the cooking. The tomato jam wasn't too sweet and balanced the food well. The biscuits were one of the table's favorites. Crispy outside, soft inside. The house made jam was very thin and not too sweet but worked well with the biscuit. We then decided to get a whole fried chicken and spare rib, along with sides of Mac and cheese, count soufflé, and Brussels sprouts, and then let people order individual dinners. Of the main dishes that I got to try, I tried the steak, surf and turf (which is scallops and pork belly), and the duck. First, the fried chicken was delicious. Well cooked, very crispy outside, tender inside, and you can get the sweetness from it bring brined in sweet tea. The spare ribs were starting to get a little too sweet but the spiciness from the Fresno chilis helped balance that out a little bit. As for the mains, you could really get a lot of sweetness on everything and that's where it went a little downhill for me. The jam on the pork belly was overwhelming and I had to push it aside to get the flavor from the pork belly. Also, the scallops, while cooked perfectly tender, had bites that were VERY salty. The tomato salsa on the steak also was not my favorite as the sweetness took away from the savory flavors of this steak. The duck was good too but again, the sweet topping was a bit much. Also, the sides were just okay. Nothing was extraordinary and the corn soufflé was not my favorite. I know there are people who love sweet and savory and so I think this would be good for them. It's still a great restaurant and a wonderful place for our group so I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend it for others (just probably not for me). read more

Celebrated our anniversary with dinner at one of our favorites in SoBro. Having lived in the south (Savannah, GA) we know good biscuits and sweet tea. The biscuits and sweet tea rival anything in the south. We had great service throughout our meal. Our waiter made sure we had everything we needed, was very personable, and we took his recommendation for one of our entrees and were very pleased. We had the shrimp and grits (another southern staple which they nailed spot on) and enjoyed fresh shrimp and perfectly cooked grits. The cast-iron duck breast was recommended by our waiter and enjoyed perfectly cooked duck with savory vegetables. My wife and I both feel as if the interior of the restaurant creates our favorite ambiance in any Indy restaurant. The chicken is super crispy on the outside but still juicy and flavorful inside. Reservations: Scheduling a reservation proved to be challenging since it told me there was one spot open for availability for dining the night we wanted to go and it was at 4:30 p.m. so we ended up having to book on a different night because there were 3 open spots available for reservation. We get to the restaurant and there were only 4 tables with customers....it was dead. Why no reservation availability if the place is empty? Atmosphere: Dimly lit with a laid back vibe. Open concept with view of the kitchen. Our table top was very small so having more than two dishes on it was a balancing act. The bathrooms and restaurant were very clean. The decor throughout was lovely. It's mostly street parking which was a bit tricky with all the snow at the time. There is a few spots for parking behind the restaurant. Service: Our server was very friendly and accommodating. Water glasses were always refilled promptly and she did a great job describing the food. The one thing that kind of put me off was watching the kitchen staff and servers eating the whole time while in there. My view the entire time was just watching people eat, and not the patrons in the restaurant. The kitchen staff were all wearing street clothes. They kept scratching their heads under their beanies and wiping their hands on their jeans it just felt..icky. I get they want their staff to be comfortable but how do you know if those jeans they just wiped their hands on are clean and then they are touching the food? Food: We ordered a few items off the menu and they were pretty good. The corn souffle was the best item we ordered by far. It had a ton of flavor and the texture was fluffy and creamy at the same time. The ribs and the bacon board were a bit bland. The pickled items on the bacon board didn't have much flavor, maybe adding more herbs or spices to the pickling solution would jazz things up a bit. The ribs were tender but I wish there was a bit more zip to the sauce, if you like a sweet bbq sauce you'll love this. Very good shrimp and grits and excellent biscuits. I did not try the ribs, but others at my table did and most agreed they were the best ribs in town. The food here is great! The cocktails were good too. The service was AMAZING. We had a group of 17 with several couples. They put enough tables together for us all to be together! Also the waiter split the check in a very complicated way between several couples and individuals. He was extremely friendly, too. And he had great recommendations. 11/10 service.
