I walked in, a useless clueless mess, and a saleswoman approached me to help. I told her I needed clothes for a 3-day wedding event in India, but I had no idea what to wear, and I didn't know what my size was for Indian-style clothes. She sized me up with a quick glance and showed me the sections where I could find different styles in my size at different price points. My sister was with me and we started going through the racks and oooohing and aaaaahing at the variety of outfits. The lady brought over a mustard outfit that included a sleeveless kurta, matching linen leggings, and dupatta (shawl-like scarf). I was slightly hesitant to try it on because it wasn't my style but i decided to trust their suggestion since it's their interest to style their clients. I was unprepared and didn't have any formal shoes/heels but they had a pair in their dressing room, which fit me. I slipped into the tunic and leggings and they fit perfectly! I walked out to show my sister and she and i were both wowed by the outfit. Another sales lady came over and said it looked great on me. They gave me another outfit to try on, a salmon pink gharara suit. The kurta has 3/4 sleeves and gorgeous beading with lattice-shaped cutout design at the hem of the tunic and matching pants that flare out at the knees with a sheer stole. The pants are long on me, I'm 5'1" and even with heels on the pants are floor-length, but I immediately fall in love with the outfit. The pants are a little loose but they were able to fix it in the store while I tried on another outfit. The elaborate detail on the tunic is absolutely gorgeous. The last outfit is a navy blue embroidered sleeveless anarkali floor-length gown with leggings and dupatta. The deep navy is accentuated with gold thread and embroidery. Again, not my style but once I put it on, it felt perfect. Before I walked out, I picked out bangles, and jewelry sets to go with each outfit. I was all set for the wedding and I couldn't have been happier with the styles they recommended. The only items I had a problem with were the navy blue bangles, which left green markings on my arm - a minor complaint in an otherwise beautiful outfit. I saw the other comments about this business but I had a great experience with their service, attention, and selection. I walked away loving the dresses and jewelry. When calling to discuss this issue, the guy had the nerve to tell me that I am from India and I did not have the money to buy and hence my behavior. I'm giving it 5 starts because their customer service in my 2 visits was excellent. There's a girl who works there named Sonu, who is incredibly helpful. She was able to read exactly what I wanted by asking simple questions: what colors are you looking for? Do you like simple or flashy? Oh my gosh, she literally read my mind like only best friends do. Please ask for Sonu when you go there. She's very patient. On my second visit, which is when she helped me for the first time, she found me an amazing outfit and a gorgeous jewelry set that matched my outfit just perfect! I adore this girl! My only feedback for the place would be to display more of those gorgeous outfits towards the front and display their jewelry better as they do with some of their outfits, also by the front of the store. The pride if California. They are using the wrong word to describe. I went purchases a sarri for my daughter-in-law. She didn't like the colors. I called them immediately. Send my niece next day with my husband to return. They said only exchange. We were fine ( he mentioned we need to come late afternoons. Not in the morning. It's a bad luck.) This was my first time shopping at Berkley, And i came into the store after having HORRIBLE customer service at Sari Palace, and the 3 people working here gave me the BEST customer service I have ever had. I am a bigger size, and I know it can be hard to find things in my size but the people working and owner were still SUPER nice to me and showed me so so so many beautiful options and pieces. This was my first time at this location, my husband and I were invited to an Indian wedding and we thought it would be nice to wear their traditional attire. As soon as we walked in the owner looked at us and said you need to wear a mask. I told him we were fully vaccinated if he would like to check since the mask mandate was over. He waved us away, so my husband and I walked to the car to get our masks. When we returned to the store several Indian people were entering without a mask, I was so furious that he only asked us to wear a mask because we were not Indian. The first one we walked into was a bit overwhelming. There were so many other girls in there shopping and we looked like a bunch of idiots standing there in the middle with no idea which way to go. We decided to head out and try another store - Roopam Sarees. We found an available saleswoman and told her what we were looking for. She pulled a couple of different saris out and I tried them on. Their prices were much more affordable and were so much more authentic that what we had previously looked at. I only made it to sari #2 before a decision was made. The color, design and fit were much more of what we had in mind and it was exciting! We even found a nice scarf to go with the BF's outfit too! I only wish we had gone shopping with someone who was Indian, that way they could have helped us bargain with the prices a bit more. Wow! I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews! I had a great experience. I went in on Sunday 4/14/19 to purchase a lehenga for a friend's wedding this Saturday 4/20/19. Super last minute. I know very little about this style of dress and felt very out of my element; the woman who assisted me was really helpful and patient. I gave her my budget ($150) and she pulled out a bunch of options for me to look at and try on. What I really appreciated was that she only showed me options within my budget. I needed the top altered and they were able to get it done in a few days at no additional cost. I'm not sure how many opportunities I'll have for purchasing this style of dress in the future, but if I do, I'll definitely come back here! In fact I recommended this store to my guy friend who's also attending the same wedding. He'd ordered a men's Sherwani online but it never showed up. They have a beautiful selection of women's Indian sari's , suites, tops , scarf's and accessories , including bangles, bracelets , necklaces and earrings. They also have a great selection of men's clothing. The owner of the store is extremely helpful, I always have him or his son help me . Their prices are marked up but culturally I think it's because the Indian community bargains. The actual price you pay for the clothing is always reasonable and very competitive since you have a few other Indian stores on university ave . Terrible customer service. They say they carry bridal however after going to the store and asking for bridal the owner said he does not. I still bought an outfit -they're sizes run pretty big and they say they can alter or have someone alter but it was uneven after I had it done. I called the owner who said he will fix it but when I came to the store he ignored the situation completely. I was simply told they did not do the alteration which I do not understand because it was done there- very black and white situation here which is why this is upsetting. They will say they can make their sizes smaller but they really can't promise it and even deny it after they do it. Also my friend ordered her reception outfit from this place and it arrived two days before her event (it was ordered 4 months before). "DISAPPOINTED" I always go for shopping here for my Indian outfits whenever there is a need. Last year I bought few sprees and one lehenga for me and a bridal lehenga for my best friend who was getting married. First of all these ladies are working for a Man (Owner) A VERY DECENT MAN who himself is from Fiji yet had the nerve to say things like that. Also the lady tailor next door who put on my sleeve did such a sleepy job that I had to take to my tailor to get it fixed. Crisis mode is an understatement when I came to Roopam Sarees. My wedding dress wasn't completed because of Covid and my fiancé and friends' outfits weren't going to make it because family that was suppose to bring them also weren't able to come because of Covid. I have yet to write a review for a clothing store, but this place is SO bad that I just have to. 1) Customer service Could be the worst of any store I have ever been to. Not just a Indian clothing store, but any store. And I have traveled to 21 countries. There is who I believe to be the owner's son. He has a haircut that was cool 5 years ago and tries to dress hip. Can't miss him. He is so smug and arrogant I could not believe it. It's like, dude, you are 20 something, and your J-O-B is selling clothes. This is the type of guy who is he was a janitor --- and let's face it, being a clothes salesman at Daddy's shop is just about the same class level --- would think he's the man. The owner, with a goatee that is trying to be Amitabh Bachachan like with his facial hair and glasses, is also an arrogant loser. 2) Selection Nothing special here. Walk, oh, 50 feet left or right and you have stores with better selection. 3) Prices Rip OFF. People who have no idea about Indian clothes may be happy that their "$500 price rag was marked down to $100!! OMG, 80% off!!" Guess what bro, he marked that up 10x to begin with, something he bought for $50 (I know, ive been to the wholesalers) he just suckered you into. 4) Staff The irony is, there is one staff member that is female and very nice. This is a horrible store. The owner is an asshole. Can't get any service in the store and when you try to help yourself by looking around you get dirty looks. What is even worse is when, I was trying on clothes to find my size, the owner got upset that I was trying them on and said I have tried on too many and either I buy now or get out. What the hell! Ah, I have completely forgot about this place until I was looking for some indian clothing stores around my area, and then Roopam Sari's pops up on my feed. I realized that with the advent of yelp!, I haven't reviewed my experiences here not so long ago! I haven't been to Roopam in so long... tell me you wanna know the reason why! For all listed below in the 1-2 star range( rude customer service, arrogant owner and son, and just a total disrespect for people in general... and then... the topper! About 2 years ago, my cousin was getting married, so we decided to hit up main st. Berkeley for out outfits. We park in the parking lot right next to Roopam, which states customers only, so we don't care because we always hit up ALL the stores on the block, Sari Palace, Roopam, Chandani, and the music shops too. However, that day, we decided to start with Chandani and ended at Roopam since we parked there. We do all our shopping, end at Roopam as planned, and we go to try put out clothes away... into a car that was not there any more. Yes, ladies and gents, our car was TOWED. So we walk back into Roopam and ask them, and they blame the cuban restaurant next to them, saying he always tows their customers cars. We walk into the restaurant and the guy tells us Roopam always tows and blames him. So, who do we believe? We get the tow order, and lo and behold, its the owner's son's name (I can't even remember the pricks name it's been so long)... but yeah, it was really shady of them to tow someone's car just like that. And we had spent like $400 there on a couple of sari's. When we confronted Roopam Sari's, they still completely denied everything, even when we pointed out their son's name signed on the tow order. Whatever. Take responsibility man! We haven't been back there since. I rather hit up Sari Palace. They are way nicer and have a better selection. read more

Everytime I go to this place- I leave wondering why I even walked in. Let's be honest- indian clothes are not cheap. But if I'm dropping $100+ on something, I want to leave feeling good. I liked two suits at roopam sarees that I wanted to buy, and I didn't buy it just because the customer service was so awful. Terrible, terrible, terrible customer service. They are reluctant to open clothes from the packages for me to browse- I asked her if I could see the suit, she told me to look at it from outside. She seemed like she didn't want to have to fold them all. And then, when I pointed out that some of the embellishments were missing on the suit, the lady told me that it must have all fallen out when I was trying it on. I am still flabbergasted over how pushy and rude they are. Their selection of clothes are still more decent that other places in Berkeley. I thought Sari Palace would be too expensive so I went to Roopam but go to sari palace- You'll leave happier, with some really unique and well made clothes, and won't feel cheated out of your money. read more

I have been here a few times and let me tell you, service has deteriorated. One lady and the elderly gentleman who work there are really nice and the others are rude. They speak in a condescending manner even though you are the customer! The owner balked when I asked that the outfit that I bought be cleaned up of all lose threads. There were countless. He suggested that I do it myself while I watch tv! I told him I hardly watch tv and its just proper customer service after which he relented. Like seriously? You are selling new clothes to people, having it look proper, neat and clean should go unsaid. The store itself is quite large. The place could use more color options in every size and price section. Additionally, washing the sheets they put on their thin display mattresses is definitely in order. I saw so many stains on them I wouldn't even touch it. Bottom line, if you find something, be sure to bargain hard (it is marked up very high based on that expectation) and don't be afraid to ask for the service you deserve. read more

The best place in the world to buy Indian clothes = India. Then best place in the Bay Area to buy Indian clothes = Roopam Sarees in Berkeley. After visiting over 10 sari shops in the last month, hoping to find just the right lengha (skirt and blouse) for an event, I landed here and found them to have the largest and most up-to-date selection of women's sarees, lenghas, and salwars for all occasions. The owners and their families were extremely attentful and sincerely wanted to make sure I found the right outfit at a cost I could afford (which I learned you can bargain down for a lot). Then, after choosing a few outfits to try on, allow the aunties in the room to help pin you/wrap you so you can see how it will look after alterations. If you need matching jewelry, just let them know and they will pick out everything for you and do an amazing job at it too. Gosh, I felt like I was in India all over again. (sigh). read more

I took my sister and her bridesmaids to shop for sarees, this was one of our stops. After a day spent driving around looking at sarees-all the bridesmaids, including the bride fell in love with this one particular piece. The owner says he could duplicate it for all 4 bridesmaids. We bought the 1 saree and intended on coming back in the following weekend to put in our order for the other bridesmaids. Following weekend is here and we are all thrilled to put our order in. Owner isn't there, its the manager. This guy says he doesn't know what the owner told us but this saree that we bought last weekend, ($100 for it) can not be duplicated. He continues to walk off and starts messing around with the shipment. I was shocked. That's it? We cant do it and walk away?? Keep in mind, had we known this-we would have continued our search for bridesmaids sarees and not bought the $100.00 saree. The manager is not willing to talk to us or help us in any way, so we ask if he could call the owner to see when he will be in to talk to him, he would not do it. He also kept leaving us and going to the back, totally disregarding us. My Opinion-these people aren't even worth the 1 star that I gave them. WORST PLACE EVER. Please do not give these people your business, especially if you are shopping for a wedding. Such a sad disappointment. Now we are back to square one, with very little time. :( read more

My mother-in-law recommended that we come to Roopam Sarees in Berkeley for my bridal lengha. I have to say that I couldn't be happier. In just the first few pulls, the owner picked out some of the most exquisite lenghas for me to try on. This man is so delightful and he makes the entire experience enjoyable. The ladies who work there are quiet, but hard working, attentive but not hovering. Out of the 3 lenghas the owner pulled, 2 we purchased - they are GORGEOUS! There were a couple inquiries made about my lenghas during and after I tried them on. Other girls loved it too and wanted it for themselves! In fact, my Fiance over heard that one of the customers requested a special order to have a sari made like my lengha. AND another bride wanted to try on my bridal lengha. Uncle was very respectful and told the bride that they are to be purchased by me, so she cannot try it on. You know you've made the right choice when other girls are envying what you got. My bridal lengha was given to us at a great price, you have to bargain! For $1,700 I got the lengha, bangles, anklets, and jewelry set. Great color, embroidery, workmanship and sparkle! My other lengha is vibrant and youthful, great quality - $875. Top is a turquoise color and the skirt is mainly fuchsia. My Fiance could not stop staring, he found the lengha to look so beautiful on me. My mother-in-law bought this lengha for me, the gifts for my family (2 kameez, 4 sarees, groom's shoes, and a couple other items) for the grand total of $1800. I cannot wait to get married now. Roopam Sarees offers some affordable and exquisite collections. I don't know if the owner purposefully laid out "the red carpet" for us, but I sure feel as though he did. 5 stars from me. This is hands down my favorite Indian store to shop at - and since moving to the South Bay, I wish it were closer to shop at! I've been shopping here since I was young and truly appreciate the warm customer service that I always receive. The selection is amazing, the staff is amazing, and I'm happy to call them my go-to for all things Indian clothing. They have a huge selection of fine quality without having to break the bank. I was able to stop by last Sunday and wish I had more time to shop and make a selection, but this is the store you should go to if you're looking for an outfit for any South Asian event. I am having an Indian wedding in June, and so we decided to go to Roopam to get our bridesmaid sarees in December. As soon as we got there, the service was wonderful. We had so many options in many different price ranges, and the store clerks picked out and arranged as many as we wanted to see. After about half an hour, I decided to try on a wedding saree, and loved it. The owner gave me a wonderful price, and then my fiance decided to try on a wedding suit. By the end of it all, the bridesmaids paid around $150 for everything including tailoring. And my fiance and I are now wearing indian wedding garments as well. The whole experience was positive.
