We were so excited to support this local business with the great reviews! When we got there, there were a few people ahead of us, so we waited patiently. Then more people came in and were helped, so we waited. And more, so we waited. When we asked how much longer it would be until we were helped, we were given a seat at a table to review suit/tuxedo offerings. Another customer tried to speak up for us and let her know we were waiting. More people came in and were helped, and we waited. We asked a couple more times when we would be helped. After an hour of waiting, we left. I think I counted 15 groups that came in while we waited - all young women getting alterations done and one young man ordering accessories. My son uses a wheelchair and we were there to rent a full tux. I don't know why we weren't helped, but it's hard not to believe the neglect was due to his multiple disabilities. This was a very disappointing and disheartening experience. I'm glad so many people have had great experiences, but if you're disabled I would recommend going somewhere else. And maybe if you're able-bodied, please consider supporting other businesses that don't discriminate. The owner did allow my son to use the bathroom while we waited, which we really appreciated. Ellie is a truly expert and professional tailor and seamstress. She does a superb job at a reasonable price and no job is too complicated for her or outside of her experience. The pandemic was very hard on her business as she had to shut down and is one of many small businesses that the venal Trump administration managed to ignore with their mismanaged and corrupt PPP loan program. Came in around 4 o'clock to see the door was locked and then after being scanned and examined by the lady in there I was then waved off for whatever. Wasn't gonna to rob the place, I just want a suit for my mom's wedding. If one of the people there could of said "Hey sorry, we have a big order for a wedding this week and are closing a little early to prepare." then I would completely understand and would have came back tomorrow but it's wrong to just eye someone up and down and then shoo them away. read more

I wish more people knew about Behrooz and his shop in Berkeley - it's rare to find someone so honest and helpful. We needed a suit in 2.5 weeks for our wedding overseas. Within 10 minutes of searching on Yelp and finding Behrooz, we were in his store. I really appreciated all the information he gave us without pushing us to rent, buy, or make a suit. He has an excellent collection with real expertise about the suits he rents and sells. We decided to buy a suit after consulting with Behrooz about rental costs versus purchasing (we were going overseas for our wedding, and needed it for more than 3 weeks). Once we found a suit, Behrooz was diligent about getting the order in and finding the right size. Not once did we ever doubt that we could depend on him. Through all the madness of wedding planning, I actually looked forward to going into his shop to chat with him while finalizing my husband's suit. I have been sitting on this review for a few weeks after my wedding, wondering what to write. Behrooz, the proprietor, is a sweet, elderly gentleman who is pleasant to work with. And the final tuxes came out very nice, with the exception of the fact that the ties were clip-on. I refused to wear one to my own wedding, and he kindly provided me with a regular tie. However, we had a terrible time coordinating tuxes for the groomsmen. Behrooz' accent is very thick, and he doesn't understand English well. It's especially problematic over the phone. He also doesn't have a very good memory. When my groomsmen called, he never remembered my name which made it difficult to track all their orders. Ultimately, my wife and I had to intervene and just tell him their sizes. To make matters more complicated, you can't pay over the phone, so I had to pay for all my groomsmens' tuxes and have them reimburse me. And for all the headache and repeated visits to his store, I always had to remind him who I was and that I had orders with him. You'd think he'd a least recognize me and know that we'd met before... I know there aren't many options in the area for tuxes. If you go here, my advice is to order all the tuxes at once (know their sizes and what you want)... and be very clear with Behrooz. The people who run both this formal wear shop and the attached dry cleaners are incredibly sweet and helpful. The first time I called to ask some questions about tuxedo rental and was offered a time on Sunday to go in (even though they are closed on Sundays). Additionally, when dropping off the rented tux, I walked up to the door at 9am only to see that they open at 9:30am... I was able to get the attention of a woman working in the dry cleaning side and she unlocked the door and took the tux for me. Incredibly nice! They also offered a very fair price for the tuxedo rental and impeccable service. The gentleman running the formal wear side did not push us to rent a top-of-the-line tux. Even after we we said we only wanted a budget-level tuxedo, he spent plenty of time with us making sure that he got all the details so that the fit and components of the tux would be to our liking. I recently was married back in March '11in Berkeley and we went to UniFormal to rent my tuxedos based on all the great reviews and I can't agree more!!! Behrooz knows what he's doing and was always straight forward with me on the style and price. He made the whole experience easy and affordable. Whenever I had questions he was promptly available to help. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. My wife just bought me a suit for work as a surprise gift from Uniformal and since Behrooz had all my measurements already, it made it that much easier for her to feel confident in buying me a suit. I was surprised to read all the bad reviews. My experience was excellent. My daughter was getting married and I need a tuxedo. I chose the style I wanted from one of his many photos in his portfolio and he took my measurements; I then chose some accessories that went with the tuxedo. Before the wedding, I came in for the fitting and the suit fit me perfectly. I'm not easy to fit and can also get quite uncomfortable in formal wear, but I was so comfortable in this suit that I wanted to keep it. Behrooz made me feel as though I was his only client and when I offered payment after he took my measurements, he said that I should wait until the suit came in to make sure I was happy. And I don't think he solicits reviews. He's an old world gentleman; tough to get used to these days. read more

Behrooz was one of our favorite vendors for our wedding this July. He was so kind and caring and willing to put up with all our flaky groomsmen and lots of changes to our order along the way. He went way out of his way to track down the measurements for our groomsmen and my dad who were all taking their sweet time to get back to him. He was always very sweet and offered to pay for one of our groomsman's tux in case he didn't show up. On top of this, he gave my husband some very nice cuff links and threw in the shoes for all the guys for free. All the tuxes fit wonderfully, even though he never got measurements from some of the guys and had to guess their sizes based on their height, weight, etc. We absolutely loved working with Behrooz and recommend him highly for your wedding or special event! read more

The Call - The moment I was greeted by Behrooz's deep voice, I knew he meant business. I told him why I needed a suit, my height and body type, and I explained my budget. Full of confidence, he told me exactly what he could do for me and invited me to the store. 1st Visit - Walking in for the first time, my first impression was that the shop wasn't big, but it wasn't too small either. The selection of suits seemed pretty diverse to me. When Behrooz came out from the back room, he greeted me with a firm handshake and we chatted for a while. He turned out to be a really friendly guy! Greetings and pleasantries aside, he went straight to business, asking me about the details and discussing the current fashion. Surprisingly knowledgeable, he was able to determine a couple of suit styles that would fit my preference and budget. I can be pretty picky, but he was very patient with me. After picking out a style, he had to order the suit, which would arrive in a week or so. 2nd Visit - A week later, the suit arrived and was ready for a fitting. The measuring process didn't take long, but also didn't feel rushed. He explained exactly how much each specific tailoring would cost, and the prices seemed pretty fair to me. My main concern was to have a suit that made me look trim and spiffy. Although the suit was already very flattering, I wanted it to be a bit more fitted. The tailoring would only take a few days. Final Visit - I was definitely excited to come back to witness the final result.. I was impressed! It was a top-notch tailoring job; the suit fit perfectly! In the course of my piano career, I have owned maybe 7 suits total, and never have I had such a sleek looking suit for such a low price. Bottom line - Low cost for excellent service and product. Behrooz knows his stuff. Tell him what you need or let him advise you. I will never be going back to department stores or, god forbid Men's Wearhouse (ugh) ever again! read more

Behrooz rocks. There is something classic, Old World about him. His style of service is personal, and he makes you feel as if you are the one doing a favor to the tuxedo by wearing it! I was being uncharacteristically airheaded recently (okay, maybe not so uncharacteristic)... I wasn't sure that I would be attending a formal event, so I waited until the last minute to put a "hold" on a tuxedo. First, I think that anybody else would not have allowed me to put a hold on a tuxedo, but Behrooz did, awaiting my instructions on whether to really order it the next day. The next day came around and I told him that I was sorry: I wouldn't be going to the formal event, so thanks, but no thanks on the tuxedo. Then, the situation changed overnight and I realized that I would be going to the event after all -- and needed that tuxedo! Needless to say, Behrooz was a complete gentleman and said "no problem." The tuxedo was ordered that day, and I was able to pick it up the next day! This is the definition of excellent service on his part (abuse on mine). Hence, the five stars unconditionally. Like seemingly everyone else who's written reviews for this store, I had a fantastic experience. Behrooz is THE MAN. His pleasant, calm demeanor immediately put me at ease. He carefully measured me for a suit for my buddy's upcoming wedding, and seemed truly concerned about getting an ideal fit. Although he probably gets a lot of business, he instantly remembered me a few weeks later, when I picked up the suit, and remembered my need for suspenders. He was also cool when I returned the suit a couple days later, and we even talked a few minutes about the wedding. I don't know if UniFormal's rental prices are low or high, since I don't know the going rate. I can say street parking was easy during the workweek, service was outstanding, and the suit fit well. read more

He knows his stuff very well, and it's great to know he really wants to ensure his customer's satisfaction, as I had the pleasure of finding out. I had to attend a gala and contacted Uni two days before the event, and got the tux not even one day later. I had enough time to try it on, the owner gave me tips and he sent me on my way. He also worked within my price range to make sure I had something that would look great but was not excessively expensive. Getting my two year old son measured for a tux here was one of my worst experiences as a parent to date and discriminatory and deplorable in nature. I would give them zero stars if possible. The backstory is long but necessary to explain the events in their entirety: My toddler son is a ring bearer in my SIL's wedding. She ordered the tuxes through Friar Tux and they were listed as a local tailor where he could get measured. I called and spoke to a woman in advance to confirm if there was anything I needed to bring in or prepare beforehand and also if I need to make an appointment? She said no to all and they were only open on weekdays. (This was a blatant lie since opened on Saturdays was listed on their sign). I told her when I'd be in. This being so and a full time working Mom I had literally one day to do this before the wedding that isn't local. I come in with my son strapped into his stroller mind you to keep him contained and out of respect for the store. I tell the lady what I'm here for whom I'm fairly confident was the same woman I spoke to on the phone and she proceeds to tell me that she can't help me due to not knowing specifics and I need a certain form from Friar Tux. So my two year old gets restless and starts to cry (as two year olds do) as I frantically try to call and get this form she suddenly insists I have. I get the form. She is with another customer which I understand and respect (and am patiently waiting although exasperated) but proceeds to tell me verbatim that I'm a "bad mother" and need "to tend to my child" all because my son is crying. She also continues to publicly shame me by saying she "can't hear" the current customer and I then get understandably upset and ask what she wants or thinks I can do? Not to mention call her out for her appalling behavior by having the audacity to criticize me for my son while waiting in their waiting area. Newsflash lady: toddlers cry and have tantrums, it's just a way of life for them. This also isn't a spa or salon and albeit while I get annoying and unpleasant I'm literally bringing my son in for your services. Glad I read the Yelp reviews too because now I know the older gentleman who ran out and just gaped at me was the owner and didn't try to remedy the situation in the slightest while continuing to allow his employee to degrade me. I will seriously laugh if he tries to respond to this post in some nice, apologetic manner when he chose to be useless and not get involved at the time. Shouldn't the owner of a business try and diffuse a situation and I'm sure the proprietor of a tailoring service could take a few quick measurements, no? So once I told this lady her customer service was appalling and she should be ashamed of herself (rightfully so) she proceeds to ignore me and say she won't help me then i.e. try and refuse me service after ALL that and what she instigated. I tell her you've got to be kidding me and are you really going to deny helping me after I made all this effort and done everything you've asked? Not to mention my poor son who has had to endure this as well?! (Further exacerbated by prolonging the time to fetch this form and putting my son in an even worse state?!) She finally begrudgingly agrees but makes sure to drive the point home that she's "only doing it for my son because he's an angel" and I'm "still a terrible mom and person" Oh and the real kicker?! When I tell her I have the form she vehemently insisted on she says she no longer needs it!!!! I will say she did at least help me decipher the measurements so one star I guess for that but never even had the decency to apologize for treating me that way or wasting my time as well. I didn't feel I could leave before telling her she should NEVER call someone a bad mother and that's so extremely hurtful and judgemental on her part. And until you've walked in my shoes you have no right not to mention I'm a customer! She then tries to justify this disgusting behavior by saying she "didn't like seeing my son unhappy and would have preferred I let him out to walk around in her store" I said the reason I kept him there was trying to be considerate and so nothing would get displaced in the shop. Clearly there's no way to "win" with her as I'm sure she would have flown further off the handle if this actually occurred. And lastly in case you were wondering she admitted she is not a mother "because she couldn't handle them" Please don't enable this behavior to continue by patronizing this business and please have a heart when seeing any parent struggling with a young child. Better yet, step in when necessary and offer help and support. Guarantee you may just make their day and turn a negative experience into a positive one. read more

Did I step into an alternate reality? I'm a professional on a budget who happened to be going to the wedding of two fashion designers in LA in two weeks. I needed a modern, tailored suit to rent, so I went to this place because of the straight five-star reviews on Yelp. I seriously have no idea what people are talking about. I explained my specifications and needs to Behrooz. We talked about a simple tux with a more modern tie and vest. He measured me and I noticed that he measured my waist about 6 inches longer than I wear. I know I have some love handles, but this seemed extreme. I went to try on the suit three days before the wedding. The pants were outrageously huge. They were Hammer Pants. Even when I wore the pants up to the belly button in the classic style as Behrooz said (even though I asked for a modern suit), the zipper went down to only about six inches above my knees. I could have literally fit two of my legs in the pant leg. I told him and he told me that I didn't understand the styling. This was the style. So I went home. I showed off the suit to my roommates, who laughed and also commented on the resemblance to MC Hammer circa 1992. My fashion designer friend also told me how horrendous it looked. When I tried on the pants for my co-workers, they commented that I looked like one of those skinny people who wears their old clothes from back when they were fat. I returned them the next day, today, two days before the wedding. Behrooz tried to tell me that I couldn't get my money back. When I told him that the pants did not fit, he told me that I didn't know anything. When I told him that my fashion designer friend said that they didn't fit, he rolled his eyes as if my friend wasn't a fashion designer. He made the process very difficult, but when I was raising my voice in front of other customers, showing him the pants against my body, he conceded. He told me that my fashion designer friend should tailor my suit himself (probably valid) and that I shouldn't rent unless I lose a few pounds (my BMI indicates that I am a normal weight). I will never go back here and I hope you will not shop here if you have any sense. I'm a casual Yelp user who never feels the need to post, except this terrible customer service experience really motivated me to get started. read more

I recently went here with my younger brothers to rent tuxedos for their up and coming prom, I can honestly say this place was outstanding!!! The gentleman that helped us was warm, welcoming and very helpful, without coming off as a pushy sales guy. The entire process was easy and smooth, he gave my little brothers a book to look through with all the different packages offered and he even had a very large selection of colors to choose from for your vest if you were matching your vest with your date it included bow ties or regular ties. The suits looked beautiful and top quality to say the least! He gave my brothers a discount for being students and threw in handkerchiefs too! One of my brothers picked a tux from the Gold section which totaled out to 132 with shoes, custom vest, tie and insurance he even got to pix the button color he wanted. My other brother chose a suit from the platinum selection for a total of 142 including all the things I mentioned above. I'd recommend this place to anyone who's looking to look great for a reasonable price. The customer service can not be beat and I left smiling from ear to ear thinking of how nice my little brothers would look! The owner (who didn't introduce himself to me) pretty much ignored me when I asked about tuxedo rentals. He just handed me two big books and told me to choose one. I even explained to him that I had never rented a suit before - he just stared at me.. it was awkward (pretty sure he could read my skepticism from my eyes). As the only suit/tuxedo rental store in Berkeley, I'm sure he gets all his money from unassuming UC Berkeley students who have no idea about renting suits. It's $145 (w/o tax) to rent a suit - which I believe is just the jacket, pants, and bowtie (wouldn't know, he didn't explain anything to me!). Not a good deal at all - also you don't get to try anything on beforehand... the pants killed it for me. They are totally old fashioned... like 90s business dad pants - big baggy crotch style. I ended going to San Francisco and was able try on and rent a slim modern suit that came with a jacket, bowtie, shirt, cufflinks, cummerbund, pants, and even shoes for $160. Fantastically gracious service. I had a tailoring emergency that no one would take. My tuxedo arrived late (due to the ineptitude of USPS) which only left a three day window for serious alterations. I explained my desperation, and the lovely woman at the counter took pity on me. She made an exception and promised to complete the alterations in TWO DAYS!! So incredibly kind. I recently rented 5 tuxes from Behrooz for my wedding (for me and 4 in the wedding party). I would certainly rent here again. When it comes to service and meeting a customer's needs, Behrooz is a real pro. Example: The jacket the supplier shipped for me as a little bit too big, so Behrooz had another jacket in the correct size the next day. If I had not been able to pick it up, he would have overnighted it to my out-of-town wedding. Example: My wedding was out-of-town, and I wanted to stay away an extra day for some photos. Behrooz had no problem accommodating me by giving me an extra day with the tux for no extra charge. I told him I was willing to pay the late fee, but he refused to accept it! All of the suits fit well, and I could not have been happier with the service. Having Behrooz on my team meant that the tuxedos were going to work out splendidly. Period. I finally found my 5 star review! Behrooz is the best shopkeeper I've ever met. After trying to find out the best place in the east bay to get an inexpensive set of clothes for business casual attire through yelp talk and receiving several snarky and idiotic comments, I did some searching myself and came across this shop with all its 5 star ratings. Now granted neither Behrooz nor I really knew what was meant by business casual, so I decided to just go down and have a look at what he had. When I got there we went over a few things and when he realized I was in the wrong place he basically was convincing me to not buy anything, but for example also seeing if he could sell me at cost some nice shoes that were demos. It turns out the shoes he had weren't in my size, but the point is that this is the kind of customer service you'd receive. He pointed me in the right direction, and he did have a fly golf shirt that I ended up buying after having to buy khaki slacks elsewhere. He gave me a very generous discount on the shirt and even let me borrow a sport jacket for FREE! Like I said, the best shopkeeper I've ever met. Due to his generosity, the prices are probably the best you'll come across, although this is expensive stuff we're talking about so I put down $$ for "moderate" pricing, but that's just because of the nature of the items. This place is phenomenal. The service is unsurpassed and prices are reasonable. He made me feel comfortable with my very first tuxedo purchase, and was very conscious of price. I called Behrooz after reading some rave reviews here on yelp. I have to agree that Behrooz ROCKS!!! My husband and I were attending a last minute black tie event last week and needed a tux FAST (24 hours)! I called Behrooz and he spent time asking me lots of detailed questions so that we could get the right suit rented. We didn't even have time to go in for a fitting! I took the measurements from the one suit that my husband owns and gave those to Behrooz over the phone. When I went to pick up the tux, he included two different colored vests and tie options at no extra cost. The tux fit so well that no one would have guessed that we rented it! I couldn't believe that it all worked out! When my husband took the suit back, Behrooz asked him how it fit. :) This guy is the real deal. read more

I'm so happy we found this shop on yelp. My husband and our groomsmen rented tuxedos for our Sonoma Wedding from here. Behrooz opened up the shop for us on a Sunday because we were coming from out of town. His shop was the only one we could find that carried a specific light grey summer tuxedo that we could not rent anywhere else. All 8 guys had perfect fitting suits and we got so many compliments on how great they looked. Behrooz was even nice enough to alter the groom's tux when it arrived so that he looked just right on our wedding day. I definitely recommend this shop for anyone looking for formal wear. read more

Don't go to this place! They measured me completely wrong. I got my Tux and the neck was too tight, the sleeves were too short and the pants had a huge waist and was extremely baggy. (similar to mc hammer pants) This place has terrible customer service and they never made it right for me. I paid top dollar and expected to get something that fit. If you absolutely have to go here for whatever reason please make sure to get measured correctly and double check your tux. The customer service is lame. Don't expect them to fix it. The rental is so pricey that you might as well buy a tux. The tuxedoes at this store are made of cheap quality material! If you shop around and feel the material, you'll see how bad it really is. In my opinion, it is not worth it to spend close to $200 for a rental and not have your tux fit properly. I hope this review helps... read more
