I took 2 brand new $300+ dresses to get alterations on the strap area and he botched my dresses ! It's as if a 10 year old cut up my dresses and sewed it. I will now need to take both dresses to a real seamstress to try to fit this disaster! Very disappointed, upset and horrified. I needed these dresses for a wedding in two weeks!!!! The BEST in the West! Love him! He relined a beloved leather jacket and it is so well done that if you turned the jacket inside out you could wear it that way too (seriously). He has altered 5 dresses to that fit perfectly to my measurements. Also, I brought in cutain panels purchased from IKEA and had him take up the length and when I took them back home and had a few friends over the first comment they made was about the curtains and how great they looked. read more

Mr. Bahman is a Farsi-speaking gentleman who has operated this shop for 41 years. So, you're getting an authentic old-school tailor who probably learned his trade in the "old country" - Iran or someplace Persian - when he was a kid, maybe as far back as the 1950's. He looked at me and knew my size immediately without having to measure. He pulled a jacket off of the wall that was my correct fit, no alterations necessary. The matching pants he pulled needed an inch taken in to be snug, and the legs sewn to my length, and that was it. He's showing off, but he really does know his stuff. He finally pulled out a tape to measure my neck - just my neck - when it was time to try on a shirt. I was looking for a suit to wear to court. I am an expert witness, among other things. Mr. Bahman could have easily sold me a suit costing $1000 to $1500, rather than the $400 my suit cost. He claims that I could pay more than twice as much for the same quality at Nordstrom's, due to their overhead. I declined the all-cotton dress shirt that I think cost $40 and would have been more difficult to take care of than I like, for a cotton-polyester that cost $28 and which he insisted I try on before purchasing it. As some people have commented, Mr. Bahman is a straight shooter. If there is some reason you won't fit an Italian-cut suit well, he'll tell you right out moments after you come in the door, whether or not you want to hear. In my case, it was "you have a little problem down here" indicating my stomach. I'm 5'11" and 195 pounds with broad square shoulders. Yeah, I'd have to lose some inches to fit Italian-cut suits the way they're meant to be worn. Think of it this way: who else can you trust to tell you the truth about how you look in something? Not your spouse, every one knows never to honestly answer "does this make me look fat?" Not your friends. Not any tailor or sales person who doesn't personally own the store or is hungry for your business. Only the sort of person who has the experience and doesn't care one whit whether you buy from him or not, as long as he's true to his profession. I did not have a good experience here. First off, let me add a disclaimer: When I went to Bahman's, it was the first time I ever went to a tailor, so understand that some of my disappointment was my own fault for not knowing exactly what I wanted. But however you look at it, the fact is I no longer wear the dress shirts I brought here to get slimmed down. What I can really speak to is the attitude of the tailor himself. As another reviewer has remarked, this guy is pretty rude. He's traditional in the pejorative sense: he can't seem to think outside the box, in this case literally! When I talked to him about slimming down my suit, he insisted that anything other than a box cut was "unmanly," and proceeded to tell me--I kid you not--that he had many years of experience with tailoring and I was new to this, so his opinion was better. Speaking now a few years later as someone who has a better sense of style and personal fit, I can tell you that my intuition at the time really wasn't off. Even if the tailor was right, that's not exactly how you get customers: by insulting their judgment. As you can tell by my profile, I rarely give low ratings, but this 2-star rating is something I feel comfortable about. The reason I haven't given 1 star is that I gather if, from my above description, he sounds like the kind of tailor you'd want (my dad, for example, would love him), then you might have a positive experience. I came in with 3 suits thinking the jackets needed altering for a better fit. When he took a look at the fitting, he was honest that he was good and loved money, but it would not be in my best interests for me to pay him to fix them. Essentially he said the jackets were fine and that he could make them better, but unless the suits were designed for my body, they wouldn't fit any better than I had them. I appreciated the honesty. Further, he even suggested moving the buttons on one jacket for a better fit, marked with chalk where they should go, and suggested I do them myself (my mom, of course). This is the kind of place that mafia dons would go to -- not flashy, no gimmicks, and no answering machine, but this guy is legit. If you come in with respect, he is professional and warm (in a traditional, old-world way). If you need a button sewn on, take it to the dry cleaner. If you need a top-notch, professional tailor for a great fit on a suit, "I know a guy". Mr. Bahman altered a beautiful designer leather coat that cost several thousand dollars when new (I got a great deal on it at an upscale vintage clothing shop). He did a beautiful job and the shortened sleeves are more beautifully finished and pressed than the original lengths. Leather is not easy to work with, particularly this fine quality. Terrible Customer Service. I went here about 6 months ago and, hoping I would be less upset over time, didn't write a review. Upon thinking about it again now, I certainly would not recommend anyone going there unless you want to get into an argument with the shopkeeper. I was going to be a groomsmen at a friends wedding in Seattle, and he asked me to get measurement for a suit because he was going to buy all his groomsmen suits. So, I needed to get all the required measurements myself. I tried to google it, but I didnt want to chance messing them up and having a suit that didn't fit right. I assumed that, for a fee, or (I had read) even for free, places would take your measurements. So I go to this store, even after reading the poor reviews, thinking "they can't possibly be as bad as people say, most people/places aren't 1 star". I was Wrong, mistakes were made. At the shop, I asked the shopkeeper (wasn't sure if he was the owner or not), if he would be able to take my measurements for a suit. Explaining that I needed it for a friends wedding, and that he was buying my suit. He said "No, I won't take them", and I thought okay fine he wants to be paid to do it. So I said "What if i pay you to take them? How much would it be?". He then says to me (it's been awhile) something along the lines of: "I wouldn't do it even if you paid me a thousand dollars. You Koreans are just going to get the suit made somewhere else. If you want to get measurements, buy a suit here." I'm Chinese, and it took some some effort not to respond back to him in a negative manner about his comment towards Asian customers. While I would be the first to make a joke about myself and Chinese people doing that very thing (My friend, ironically, was trying to get the suits made in China, but it didn't work out haha), it was still very off putting to be stereotyped as that type of customer, and considering I was willing to pay him, saw no reason for him to respond to me in this manner. I then left, with no measurements, very upset that a business like this can still exist. I can't speak on his skill as a tailor, but he didn't even allow me get to that stage of business with him. I understand his feelings about customers who come in, waste your time, and leave never intending to buy in the first place. But I specifically came in to his shop to get measurements. That's the only reason I came in, and I made it clear to him that's why i was there. I'm most frustrated by his lack of regard for customer service. He was rude and either intentionally or unintentionally racist. Either way, the result was to turn away a potential customer and messing up the start of my day. Businesses that lack basic service skills such as being polite and professional, should not exist. If he can continue to survive off of his current customers, fine, but if he wants new ones he should be aware of how he presents himself. This is a very personable place to either shop for male clothing or have alterations done. It is not a "high street boutique". Rather, it is a secret gem tucked away on San Pablo Avenue in Albany, CA. You need to have an open mind, sense of humor and a European-Wordly approach to understand the dynamics of an "old world" master tailor who will speak his mind without censorship, be honest, very reasonable and, yes, as organic as it gets. I had my wedding gown reduced by one whole size and I could not be happier or luckier to have found Bahman tailor. Again, not for the delicate, PC-minded person. He did a wonderful job tailoring some of my dresses for my pregnant and newly boxom self, so i no longer looked like a contestant for a reality tv show but back to a more modest normal person. Bahman has performed every clothing alteration our family has needed for at least 10 or 15 years, and I don't think we've been anywhere else since the first time we walked in the store. I have also purchased a suit and many pairs of slacks here, all made in Italy, and been happy with every purchase. There are only a handful of businesses I can think of that have had a perfect service record over such a long time. Other reviewers have had a hard time dealing with Mr. Bahman, and I suppose he is the antithesis of the modern retailer. He says what he means, he knows his trade, he isn't afraid to tell me if something I want doesn't make sense, but his workmanship is always impeccable. My Overall Recommendation: Avoid this tailor like the plague. That is, of course, unless you want to be yelled at, told your requests are "stupid", and have your clothing ruined. My Reasoning: My husband took his wedding suit here in May of 2014 to have it tailored to fit. During the consolation, Adam requested a specific fit, the tailor agreed, and they moved forward. When we went to pick up the suit, we realized the fit was completely off and that the alterations were completely off. The crotch was shaped like a cone, the seams had been shredded, and the suit generally fit like David Byrne's Big Suit from the Stop Making Sense tour. Adam asked the tailor to fix the suit to their previously agreed upon style. At this point, Bahman told him that the fit he wanted was "stupid" and that "no one wanted that style". We ended up leaving with a plan to recover the suit at another tailor. The next tailor told us the suit was a bust. Bahman had ruined it beyond repair, and from what the next tailor told us, overcharged us as well. We went back to Bahman and simply request a refund on the alteration of the pants, since this was the part that was shredded to pieces, with the ruined crotch. He screamed at my husband, told him that he "doesn't give f*ing refunds", and chased him from the store. Overall, we were out one suit two weeks before the wedding and $120 in alterations. I suggest that this guy closes up shop and retires, since he clearly has no regard for his customers or the profession. read more

Small business with one employee, the owner! He saved me money by being so honest and professional. First he offered to save me money by simply altering my current suit. Most people do not know that this is an option. However, he gave me some other options. I decided to purchase a suit and the owner probably spent over 1 hour with me. He does the alterations so he invested a lot of his time double checking his measurements. I will also switch from using a belt, he showed me how much better my pants would look by using suspenders. The suit I was interested in purchasing was a $700 Italian suit, but he showed me one for half the price but looked the same ! I did not think it could be done, but thought I would ask anyway. Mr. Bahman agreed it was challenging, but thought he could do it. That said, I've only ever had tailoring done and it's always excellent work, done on time for a very reasonable cost. Just had two sport coats adjusted and am very happy with the work. This guy is incredible. I took an Italian jacket I bought for $12 from goodwill and a reasonable pair of slacks (let's say $30) to him to have them fit better. He quoted me $135 to make both fit nicely and schooled me on what "nicely" actually is. On all points, I had done my research and agreed. The jacket was a nice one, but definitely needed work to fit me. Same with the slacks. So for around $187, I got a $400 Italian suit tailored/altered to fit me. VERY happy with the results and the quick turnaround. I also very much like this guy's matter-of-fact demeanor and no-nonsense attitude. He did appropriate measurements and asked the right questions beforehand. Had me check the fittings before I left his store. If you want a button sewed on, go to your local cleaner's. If you want a nice fit in good clothes on a budget without snobbery, go to this guy. VERY good at what he does. I'm going back to buy a full suit from him and I need more ties. read more
