The portion was more than I needed, but I didn't leave hungry. The bill was a bit high, but the experience was great. I'm ok for paying a bit more for this quality. I will probably return when I'm in the area. I recommend this restaurant for an occasional great meal for a very special time. I've experienced many "high-end" restaurants- this one is in a league of its own. It is by far the very best in Kentucky.. There are other great restaurants with great food and nice atmospheres that I enjoy, but this one is special.

The vibe here is more than a little bit "the one place where Mom, Dad, and Grandma treat junior for…read moredinner when they come in for graduation" but while that does tend to suggest a very middle-of-the-road menu, it doesn't have to be damning. They do dutifully offer regional dishes like spoonbread, a hot brown, hoppin' john, and fried chicken, alongside other medium-voter preferences like steak, burgers, and the like. And my quiche was good, Michael's fried chicken sliders were good, and the sides were generally passable. (My home fries did taste like they'd been made well before they landed on my plate, but when there's a large menu and a small crowd, something has to give.) The hotel does make the meal feel a little special, and as of this writing, the hotel had decorated the restaurant with artisan works from Berea College Student Craft that make the whole place seem very cheerful. Prices are also about where they should be. If we're passing through again, this will certainly stay on our short list.

So, going into Jackson's restaurant, a mom and pop restaurant specializing in home cooked style food, I had my doubts. And, seeing the sheer number of different options sitting out behind the glass window only furthered my suspicions. Look, I was wrong. The food here is really good. The service is super friendly and helpful. I was so overwhelmed by all the choices I just told the lady behind the glass counter to pick me something. She obliged with a kindness that made me think she knew me somehow. She chose the chicken and dumplings, beef stew, apples, and two different types of corn bread. Now, I thought initially, and she even admitted, that the chicken and dumplings/beef stew mix was a little unorthodox, but that they were both so good I had to try them. Both were fantastic. The apples were awesome. I liked both types of corn bread. When I got up to leave, she called me over to the counter and said that since it was my first time there, I'd get a free dessert. You all, I was too full to even try. The food here is both tasty and filling. I was in Richmond for a conference at Eastern Kentucky University. So it was really convenient to stop by. But I'd say that even if you're remotely close, it's worth a visit. Don't, as I did, judge a book by its cover.
