Stopped in at Dinner Bell Restaurant on Christmas Eve, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Even on a holiday, the service was warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly. I had the turkey and dressing dinner, and it was excellent--tender turkey, flavorful dressing, and classic comfort-food sides that tasted truly homemade. Everything came out hot and fresh, and the portions were just right. What really stood out was how well the staff handled a busy holiday evening without ever making us feel rushed. It felt welcoming and relaxed, which made our Christmas Eve meal extra special. Food was mediocre other than the fried green tomatoes they were good. Catfish "platter" has one small piece of catfish and two small scoops of cafeteria style sides. I usually have food left over when I eat out but this didn't even fill me up, not even close. Disappointed because years back I remember it being good but also was during the unlimited catfish which was cheaper than the single piece platter also. Tired, hungry travelers decided to check out this pleasant restaurant still fairly busy at 2:00 pm. We were happy to see the wait staff ready to take our order quickly. When the food arrived it was hot and smelled delicious. The order of French fries was cooked in a tempura batter that made them amazing. Then the burgers were juicy and fantastic. They were covered with the toppings that we ordered and the tomatoes were fresh and juicy and the lettuce cold and crisp. These burgers were mouth watering and what people dream of when ordering a burger. The other people in our quickly recovering party had pork tenderloin sandwich with the delicious fries and beef manhattan with mashed potatoes. My husband was so kind that he finished my fries for me. He was very happy to have some of those delicious fries. read more

My husband and I both had breakfast for lunch. The country fried steak was delicious. The biscuit was fine but the gravy had just the right flavor. Not too peppery and not too salty. Our eggs were cooked exactly as ordered. The service was attentive and friendly. The ambiance was country but also clean and open. We would certainly dine here again. It's hard to leave a negative review when the staff were so incredibly kind, but unfortunately there were more negatives than positives. The food was overall run of the mill. I ordered my eggs over easy and the whites weren't cooked all the way, the gravy was cold for the biscuits, and portions were relatively small for the price. None of which made sense for the length of time it took to receive my meal. There are too many hole in the wall joints with better food, prices, and shorter wait time. I would try them out again if they can get some better organization in the kitchen, and lighten up on the prices, or increase portions. read more

I have driven by this place hundreds of times... This was my first time stopping in, and maybe my expectations were too high. It is kind of a knock-off of a Cracker Barrel with the little gift shop and the country interior. The hostess was super nice and got me seated right away. Which was great... but here is where it starts going downhill. It is literally 5 minutes of sitting there before the waiter stops to get my drink order . I placed my food order right then. It took another 5 minutes for the for my ice tea to arrive. I swear the waiter walked but me no less than 20 times without a saying a word while a waited 35 minutes for their daily special cat fish dinner to come out.. you may ask why it takes that long for the daily special to get prepared, and I really don't know what to tell you. Well, to start off, the service was good, friendly. The place was pretty clean and airy. Cashier friendly. First time here. We have only been in Berea for a month and thought we'd try The Dinner Bell out because of the great reviews. Needless to say, we were disappointed. We were under the impression that it was better than Cracker Barrel. Not so, I'm sorry to say. Almost all of our food was only lukewarm, except for my green beans and my husband's cauliflower. The corn bread was rubbery?! and cold. Mashed potatoes were so thick and almost cold, that I was unable to eat. Mac n cheese, my favorite side dish of all time, was bland and, well, I couldn't eat it. Anyhow, I won't go on. We usually give these kinds of places and bad experiences, another try. Why do I torture myself. I guess it's because the food is sooo good. Just don't be in a hurry. We come here about once a month. Usually after church. It's consistent. You WILL WAIT a minimum of 1 hour to receive your good. AFTER the order. The staff are friendly. The food is great price is as is today's pricing. I spent $46.00 on breakfast take out. Part of the order were two orders of pecan pancakes, one order was fine, the other order were black and burnt. I called and they were not apologetic, and more worried about offering the very minimum. I'll never be a customer as long as my heart ticking. What a delight. I was in town for work and craving mac n cheese, so I stopped at the Dinner Bell. I was seated quickly and served an iced tea while I looked over the menu. I could not believe the prices!! Having come from Nashville I shouldn't be surprised, but the amount of food I got for what I paid was shocking. I ordered the chicken fried steak with green beans and mac n cheese, but unfortunately they were out, so I swapped for mashed potatoes. Everything was wonderful, and my waitress was super attentive and sweet. All told I think my bill was less than $12, which blew me away, so of course I had to take a look around the gift shop up front, and of COURSE I had to buy the pad of paper with the smiling girl at the bottom and the quote at the top, "I laughed so hard the tears ran down my leg!" Showed up told we had to wait 35 mins restaurant wasnt even 1/2 full. Called us in after 10 mins ordered food it showed up cold and gravy congealing on my husbands turkey sandwich. I ordered the chicken fried steak. The gravy had already solidified on top. The steak was cold on the inside and my mashed potatoes were cool. The meal was disgusting. This used to be a great place with good food. Today, I waited 1 hour and 6 minutes for two dinners. A cheeseburger with fries and fried mushrooms and Turkey with dressing, mp, and pinto beans. The Turkey dinner had been waiting as long as I had apparently, and the "burger" was a piece of meat on a sub bun, nothing else on it. I had to ask repeatedly how much longer, no one would actually answer so I would have to ask again after they had went to check. I get things get busy, but please train your staff. And please stop serving food if this is as good as it gets. We will never be back. read more

I was hesitant about trying this place out because of the 3 Star rating. Glad I decided to stop on in. The open faced roast beef was really good. The corn, fried okra and fried banana peppers were all tasty also. The rootbeer float was good. Looked around at what other people were eating and everything I saw looked tasty. They serve breakfast all day and the pancakes one kid had looked like something I'm going to try next time. Our waitress was friendly and the food didn't take to long. I'm writing my review hours after eating there as I'm laying in bed with what I'm sure is food poisoning. I've gotten food poisoning before, I know what it feels like and it's something you can catch even from the cleanest of places so this review isn't based entirely on that. Our service was terrible. It seemed anything we asked for was a major inconvenience for our Server. We ordered ice water for beverages not because we're cheap but because that is ALWAYS what we prefer with our meals (I wish Restaurants could get this through their heads and understand that some people honestly prefer water) ....the water here had a bad taste and could possibly be the reason I'm sick now ...however, my husband isn't sick and he drank it too. The waters were also never refilled and were empty half way through our meal. I asked if they had actual real butter when I ordered my meal and the waitress said yes without hesitation....no, they do not have butter, it was a Country Crock Spread....fine for some people but not for me and that's why I asked first and questioned when she brought the spread...she looked at me as if I were a Green Alien. Side Note...what kind of Southern Homestyle Restaurant doesn't have Real Butter? Maybe the Amish business around the corner could hook you up? Fried Green tomatoes were brought out with ketchup??? It seemed too much when I asked for something else..she offered ranch dressing I countered with Blue cheese and she brought out a room temperature packet of Marzetti Blue Cheese...one packet, we had two orders, we asked for another and I swear I felt the waitresses eyes roll...we never received another packet. My husband enjoyed his fried cod and fried shrimp. I had the fried chicken....I've actually only made fried chicken once in my life and mine absolutely soared over what I had there today. It's probably the real culprit to the belly cramps, nausea and etc, etc...I'll leave out all the other details as I imagine you are reading reviews in anticipation of actually eating something soon....I do not recommend the fried chicken. Let me start by saying the waitress that waited on us was extremely nice and friendly. She would get a five star review if this was based on her alone. It makes me sad even to write this but people of a different race should be aware that this is still happening. And NOT a welcoming place if you are not white. It was written in their faces, that they were not happy with me being there. I was too tired and just wanted to get some dinner and get to our destination. We were chasing the Total Eclipse and head to TN. I believe that they only set us was because my husband is Caucasian. I watched them not even greet the black couple that came in after us. I give this restaurant a solid 4 stars . Traveling and was going to go the Cracker Barrel across the street however looked up the reviews and decided to give it a shot. We had the turkey and gravy , fried chicken and meatloaf ( would have ordered chicken fried steak however they were out) . I highly recommend getting the fried green tomatoes as a side if available and the yeast rolls over the cornbread. It's been years since I had either and it brought back memories of my Grandma. My husband ordered fried pork tenderloin and it came out way over cooked and looked burnt. The server said that it wasn't finished the first time so they had to recook it. She said that the oil they used to cook it was old. She would get him something else but not a new pork tenderloin. She said they were in the process of changing the oil and it would be a while. My chicken tenders were not hot and tasted like something out of a frozen food bag. My Mac and cheese look like it just came nuked out of a microwave and was nasty. We knew we should have left when, we walked past several tables that looked like the people left full plates. Then I asked the server for recommendations and she said that she is picky and never eats there. When the guy at the counter ask how things were and I told him, he had a very bad attitude and treated us like shit. That should have said time to leave.
