This is quite possibly the best restaurant to ever exist in Stanford. I grew up in Stanford, I can tell you that in the 1980's and 1990's that local restaurants here were nothing but no-name greasy spoon diners selling nothing but fairly generic "burger and fries" and breakfast food, and it was usually pretty lousy. I was back in the town I grew up in a couple of weeks ago, and heard there was a really nice cafe in Stanford now called the Bluebird, so I sought it out. I was amazed. This definitely is more like a place I would expect in Lexington or Louisville. The food is genuinely good. Iced coffee and espresso, hot browns, and lots of other food that was never in Stanford when I was growing up there as a kid. I know that Stanford went wet a few years ago in a referendum, but it's still surreal to see margaritas and other mixed drinks on the menu in a place in Stanford. The ambiance was friendly and welcoming, and struck a nice balance between small town friendly. I had a patty melt, which was probably the best meal I'd ever had in a restaurant in Stanford in my entire life. I will definitely be back the next time I come back to my old hometown. read more

Passing through en route to Georgia. Found this little gem on Yelp. Mr. Man had beef stroganoff. House made, excellent flavor, enought to feed 3 people. I had a Swiss mushroom burger. Freshly sautéed shrooms, cooked perfectly, juicy, seasoned well, served on a brioche bun. They offered a great selection of sides. I chose the chicken lemon orzo soup. What a quaint place. My niece took me to the Bluebird and I just loved it. We were welcomed and sat quickly. Great menu and had the Avocado toast. Also stared with a homemade cinnamon roll. My wife's burger was incredible, very tasty and the side of lemon chicken soup was also very good and enough for a meal if you're not too hungry. It was expensive for what I received. French toast was 1 piece of bread cut in half and not that great. I also got a biscuit with sausage gravy. The biscuit wasn't cooked all the way and the gravy was so thick and just didn't taste like sausage gravy. And the pancakes, I don't know what to say. I have never tasted a pancake like that in my life and never want to again. If the food was great or at least good I wouldn't mind paying the price but it wasn't worth it. A little out of the way but we were over this way on the bourbon trail at Wilderness Trail so we stopped in. Not too busy and we got a table right away. Our server was great. Very local kind of vibe. Though there seemed to only be one server, she worked hard to keep all patrons happy and cared for. I got the bluebird Bennie, which was ham, fried green tomatoes, smoked Gouda sauce, red pepper coulis, and over easy eggs. Unconventional idea of a Bennie, not my style, a little heavy, but not bad. All four of our meals sat under a heat lamp for probably 10 minutes before we were served, and in fact, others arriving after we did, got their food before we did. While our food was sitting there, our server said she'd be right back AFTER she fixed drinks for another table, which again, came in after we did. Three of us ordered the Hot Brown sandwich, which would have been fantastic, had it been warmer than room temperature. Even then, it was good, with the gouda sauce and the bread base being highlights. In our opinion, cost did not equate to the taste of the food. The positives: Food presentation was nice and food was hot. The place itself appeared clean and seating was ample and comfortable. We were seated immediately upon entry by a hostess. All of the staff we encountered were very pleasant. Our server kept our coffee cups filled without our having to flag her down. These factors were easily a 5. However, nothing that we ordered - in our opinion- justified the cost of the food. We paid $13 for two very basic slices of French toast. With 0 sides. If we added a biscuit, for example, $3. Or a side such as potatoes, etc - either $3 or $4 each side. And so if you wanted sides with your French toast, with each side being $3 or $4, all of a sudden, you are looking at a breakfast that can possibly cost $20!! And there was nothing special or unique about the food that we ordered/was served. Our final bill for three for basic breakfast foods actually exceeded some of our dinner prices at other restaurants. I'm sorry but in this economy, there are so many other places where we can spend our money and get better quality and quantity of food for less cost. We don't see ourselves returning. read more

We found a cute B&B in the area for a weekend getaway and when we checked in we asked for dinner recommendations. I'm glad they recommended (and that we picked) this place! We went an hour before closing time and it wasn't very crowded on a Saturday night. We shared the fried green tomatoes and the smokehouse pasta. We stopped by the Bluebird for the first time on 5/28. We frequently pass through Stanford in our way to Lake Cumberland. Oh my goodness -- how could we have missed this charming spot on all those trips!! Open for a limited dinner time on Fridays and Saturdays (5:00-8:00 p.m.) we were thrilled to find fabulous food awaited us at this sweet place tucked away into a refurbished building on historic Main Street. We started our dinner off with the special appetizer of the day -- Porkbelly bites that came sitting atop gently fried grit cakes. The creamy grit cakes paired very well with the crisp yet tender pork belly bites served in a mild sweet sauce that had just a hint of heat to it. My spouse sampled the Dynamite chicken wrap with the smoked Gouda Mac-n-cheese that featured bow tie pasta in lieu of the standard Mac noodle. The chicken was hand cut and breaded, the dynamite sauce was low heat and flavorful with all the fixings added to the wrap being fresh and crisp. The Gouda mac was phenomenal!!! Pasta cooked perfectly and coated in a delish creamy, mild, smoked Gouda sauce. I ordered the Bluebird Hot Brown and it did not disappoint. Crispy French bread slices provided the foundation for my sandwich and stayed crisp to the very end! Topped with layers of turkey and hams Gouda sauce, chopped bacon (no chintzy bits here!) and fresh tomatoes, I can easily say this was one of my favorite Hot Browns ever. We ended our meal with just enough room for the Bourbon Chocolate Sundae with the star of that show being small batch vanilla bourbon cream from Harrodsburg, a rich chocolate sauce (not Hershey's), and the usual toppings. The bourbon ice cream had a hint of bourbon through out and made for wonderful dessert. Service was prompt at the Bluebird with quick seating, drink service, and an attentive server. The decor featured tables and booths with fresh cut flowers, and the open kitchen provided visual interest but low noise for anyone interested there. This was always the best place in town for breakfast. Came here this morning and the breakfast menu has been reduced to bare minimum and there are no kids offerings. I mean do you expect me to pay 10.95 for one pancake for a child? So until it changes, if you would like to overpay for a 2 egg breakfast, this is your spot. Miss the versatility of this place. The consensus was that the hamburger is excellent, the omelette is great, the fish tacos are good, the pulled pork sandwich is OK, and the egg salad sandwich is a nice idea, but needs more spice. Service was excellent and the ambience is nice. We concluded that this was a nice old-fashioned luncheonette and enjoyed our time there. We also appreciate that the meat comes from Marksberry Farms. Nice to have original Henry Faulkner's on the walls as well! We combined this with a visit to the brand, new glass, national Museum, in Danville, and a visit to Soaps and Such across the street from the Bluebird Café. It was Small Business Saturday, so downtown was busy and so was the Bluebird, so we had to wait a few minutes to be seated. Our waitress was nice and efficient and kept our drinks filled without us having to ask. My wife ordered (and loved) the Hot Brown. I ordered (and loved) the burger that was spicy and came covered in jalapeños. The atmosphere was nice inside the old downtown building and we same other menu items we will go back and try in the future. It came atop a bowl of Kale, a chopped fried chicken tender rolled in a mayonnaise that was not very spicy served with a side of ranch??? The House Burger was very good and the tomato slice was half as thick as the burger. The star of the lunch show was the french fries...crispy outside and creamy inside (the way french fries are supposed to be!) salted perfectly, it would have been a crime to put ketchup on these dudes. The prices they charge in the settle main street restaurant is unbelievable and the quality of the food does not match the price for what you pay. It is really sad. There is no other small restaurant on Main Street in Stanford to choose from. We tried the restaurant on three different occasions.
