This is a good 10 star out of 5 stars restaurant Very nice old time atmosphere. Very nice staff. Good selection of foods. Very clean and well appointed dining room. Casual dining - some people were dressed up - I wasn't, but I didn't feel out of place. The Tenderloin meal was recommended, and I'm glad it was. Cooked perfectly. The portion was more than I needed, but I didn't leave hungry. The bill was a bit high, but the experience was great. I'm ok for paying a bit more for this quality. I will probably return when I'm in the area. I recommend this restaurant for an occasional great meal for a very special time. I've experienced many "high-end" restaurants- this one is in a league of its own. It is by far the very best in Kentucky.. There are other great restaurants with great food and nice atmospheres that I enjoy, but this one is special. read more

Historic Boone Tavern, located in Berea, Kentucky was built by and remains owned by Berea College. The restaurant and menus were recently renovated and revised. The entire restaurant is decorated with art and crafts devised by students who work at Berea College. For lunch, I had a delicious catfish Po Boy sandwich with broccoli raisin slaw. Dessert was warm bread pudding with Kentucky bourbon sauce. Each meal is accompanied by an individual serving of the Tavern's famous warm spoon bread (a kind of corn meal soufflé) with butter. Dinner was light (still full from lunch). Kale sausage soup, hot deviled eggs and, of course more spoon bread. All washed down with filtered water and southern sweet tea. Servers were attentive and helpful. There is a full bar and an amazing offering of fine Kentucky Bourbons. Boone Tavern is pet friendly and located on campus. Shopping and campus locations are walkable. Parking is free and conveniently located. Guests may work out at the college gym, stroll campus, or drive a short distance to hike in the Berea College forest (Pinnacles). Rooms are well appointed and furnished with furniture made by students. Highly recommend Boone Tavern Hotel and restaurant for a little getaway. read more

Beautiful restaurant in the college district. They start you with a cornbread soufflé hot out the oven with fresh butter. Delicious. For our lunch, I had the wilderness road burger, a combination of Wagyu beef, elk, bison & wild boar on a toasted rustic bun with cheddar and applewood bacon and crisp hot fries Excellent and very filling. Lots of history here and was excited to give this tavern a try. The building is just beautiful and I'm sure the hotel is really nice too. We were seated right away as they weren't super busy. However, service was very slow after that. We waited a very long time for our food and drinks. We had the pecan old fashioned which was really good, with a really nutty flavor. They also started us with spoon bread and butter. The bread was warm and moist. Very unique and delicious. Our dishes were chicken flakes in a birds nest and the filet with potatoes and asparagus. The chicken flakes had creamy potatoes and gravy and the green beans were crisp and everything was seasoned well. The filet was cooked properly with a nice gravy with crispy, delicious taters and fresh veggies. The meals were enough for leftovers and both dishes were great. The menu isn't huge, but there were enough options that we may come back again. read more

Drove down to Berea for the day. Walked into Boone Tavern and decided to have a light bite. The spoon bread was complimentary and came with orange butter. Deliciously light and airy. We were intrigued by the fried avocado. So melt in your mouth yummy with a spicy remoulade for dipping. We shared the ham and Gruyere sandwich which came with homemade chips. Amazing ham. The beautiful, newly renovated restaurant at the Historic Boone Tavern is now known as "Crafted". The color is eye catching and I love that the decor displayed is created by the college students. The hostess and servers are all very friendly. We enjoyed breakfast two mornings at Crafted. I highly recommend their Biscuits and Gravy (my all time favorite breakfast) and the Buckwheat Banana Pancakes with Carmel sauce. There were both so good! The only reason I didn't give a full five stars is because my boyfriend ordered a latte and we were told by our server that they weren't for sure if it was up and running but they would check. They never followed up on that. We also asked for some regular sugar and it was never brought to us. We ended up borrowing some from another table. The first morning we thought coffee might be complimentary since they bring it to the table and it wasn't on the bill. The next morning we were charged. Nothing that's a big deal. We think our server may have been new. They were very sweet though. We always enjoy our stay at the Historic Boone Tavern and eating at the restaurant. read more

This dining experience was truly a mixed bag of an evening! We arrived around 7:15 and were seated promptly. We had reservations which clearly weren't needed. We immediately ordered water and a round of drinks. Water was promptly served. We ordered some appetizers- onion soup - amazing and piping hot. Artichoke dip was warm and yummy. Stuffed mushrooms - ice cold. We enjoyed our appetizers but were still without any beverages that should have been served before the appetizers. 30 minutes after ordering our drinks we still didn't have them. The restaurant was very slow and there was nobody in the bar so we were confused as to what the problem was. The Lemon Drop was beyond sweet with no liquor mixed in the syrup. My mixed drink was also devoid of any alcohol. There is a very easy way to tell if your drink contains alcohol. If the ice in your drink doesn't melt, there's no alcohol. If you go to this restaurant, please do not order a mixed drink. Save your money and order a glass of wine or beer. Still trying to comprehend the $17 glass of Moscato...the entire bottle costs less. Moving on to dinner... I ordered the scallops which came with a risotto cake mixed with pea purée, mashed carrots and a delightful cucumber salad. So mad that I didn't take a picture because the plate was stunning and delicious! Two others in our party ordered steak which they both rated as average quality but flavorful. It was a little disconcerting that one of our steaks was an inch thick while the other steak was only half an inch thick. The thicker steak was also cut larger than the thin steak. Again, confused. Service was horribly slow on a slow night. Made me thankful that it was a slow night. All of the veggies we were served with our meals were wonderful. Tip to the prep team - the white, woody bottoms of the asparagus spears should be removed prior to cooking. They belong in the compost bin - not on a plate. Overall the food and portions were good. My meal was excellent. But the slow service, cold appetizer and fraudulent drinks that took 45 minutes to arrive left a lot to be desired in our minds. 3 meals, 3 appetizers and 3 drinks averaged around $100 per person. I understand the historic value of this restaurant but it's seriously needs an update. Very nice bathrooms. For my money, Honeysuckle is a much better option in Berea. read more

First, the good. The room is striking and attractive. The university students' artwork and crafts are endearing and the furniture fairly sumptuous. The portion sizes are generous and the food is visually pleasing. Now, the not-so-good. The spoon bread was burned nearly black on top--inside was moist and tasted ok, but the outside was almost off-putting. The deviled crawfish was spicy to the point of uncomfortable-- not so much hot as just utterly spiced beyond recognition. It was served with house made kettle chips--both the dip and chips were oily and didn't really compliment each other. The crawfish dip needed something neutral mixed into its texture to dampen the overpowering spices and a nice bland country bread to spread it on would have surpassed the chips instantly. The smoked ribs were mediocre and the top was burned hard and black. The broccoli slaw was good. The pecan-crusted trout was ok, but there was almost more crust than fish. I'm not trying to be difficult--it's just that it was, again, over much. It was served over arugula pestoed fingerling potatoes that were good, but, forgive me, once more, STRONG. The beurre blanc w capers drizzled over the top was nice. All three of these were fairly devoid of salt, so when a tad was added, they improved. I ended up scraping half the crust off the fish and it helped. For dessert, we both had bread pudding "with bourbon sauce." Somewhere, somewhere on that dish was a whisper of bourbon sauce but it could have used a PINT! Dry, dry as the Levant, and topped with a micro dollop of whipped cream. Friends, a scoop of melting ice cream hides a myriad of sins--especially if your bread pudding is dry as cornbread. Service was friendly and timely. Young, bright, chatty students with manners and nice smiles. We were planning on coming tomorrow night to try other dishes. 'Fraid not. read more

If I go to a historic hotel I'd expect the restaurant to look the part, not like some modern fusion gastro pub. So disappointing. No white table cloths, dark walls with art by the college students. But the stuff is not fitting with the hotel, like a total 180. Also the food, honestly, I make better at home. I was so ready to be blown away with a first class dining experience, and we did both dinner and breakfast, never again. I'm not sure what has changed from the pictures and reviews I've read in the recent past but I will eat elsewhere for much less, and we did the next meals. Service was so-so, didn't get the famous spoonbread until our meal was almost complete, they said they forgot. Seriously? The $19 Mac n cheese was not creamy, dry and cool to the touch. I thought from the description it should have been ooey gooey and dripping with a lucious béchamel sauce loaded with 7 year aged cheddar. Not hardly, tasted like it was reheated from dinner a day or two before. Zero sauce, hardly any cheese and over cooked pasta. As I said, not sure what's going on, but while we loved the hotel, the restaurant is a huge disappointment. read more

Boone Tavern Berea Absolutely the best restaurant in Eastern Kentucky if not all of Kentucky. Our view: Individual experience, loyalty, quirks, ... all play a role in which is "best." In terms of steaks, we recommend; in terms of service we recommend; in terms of ambience we recommend. This is a five star dining experience from anticipation to execution. The training program is excellent and all staffers are eager to please. Filet is 8 ounce and we highly recommend. Boone Tavern is good for "date night" and group dining. The ambience is bright, pleasant, and inviting. My filet is near perfect - wish they would offer ribeye; my wife is very pleased with Signature Chicken Flakes in a Birds Nest. Possibly the best French Onion Soup in Kentucky It is difficult for us to work in dining here on our many trips south, and we are not opposed to destination dining. I have been here twice, once for a banquet another time for their thanksgiving buffet. Both times service was good, I enjoyed the banquet far more than I did the buffet as the food was underwhelming for the price. We did provide feedback to management and they were receptive and provided us a gift card so we can have another opportunity to try their food. That was very much appreciated. read more

The food was mediocre at best and left my fiancé and I feeling unwell after eating. I had a turkey and Swiss and a beef brisket sandwich for lunch. We were charged twice and I went to the cafe, which is where you must place to-go orders for some reason, and had to wait to talk to the barista because she was slammed and obviously stressed out. She was unsure how the POS system worked so she got the food manager Nick to talk to me. I again waited 5-10 minutes for him to come out. He couldn't find the charge and then said he didn't know how the POS system worked which was appalling as the food and beverage manager of a high end, for Berea, restaurant. He said he would call the company who owns the system and figure it out. I asked how long that would take and he said a few hours instead of just giving me cash or even a coupon while I waited on the charge to be taken off. They changed the way they do their spoon bread and I saw 3 different servers try to give this couple spoon bread when they had already been served. The ambiance is very up kept as always. Was driving through Kentucky and saw the Historical Hotel Sign on the interstate, so I decided to stop in. this is an old historical hotel, but the bar area is actually a cafe with no charter. No 100 years old feel as you except. No room sits at the actual bar because in the middle is the service line for people picking up drinks. I had the lobster bisque, and it is not good at all. I would give it a 5 for being a historical hotel, but the rest is just ok. And dining room just wood floor with tables and chairs No character. read more
