Soft serve on a Sunday afternoon
    Dodd D.

I am a sucker for the 1950's era ice cream shops. So mom and pop. I like the eclectic food menu mix that backs up these vestiges of a by gone time. The Twin does not disappoint. It has been around for decades. When you ask locals no one gives me an exact date. Also when you ask about the name you get different responses as well. Some say that it is named for the twin cities of Irvine and Ravenna others says that there were a lot of twins in the neighborhood when it first opened. My money is on the former as opposed to the latter story. Regardless the place is a local staple. Every August for years I have made an annual pilgrimage to the twin. I go for the soft serve ice cream. In years past I have gotten the cones. This year I went with the cup. I am getting older and it is just to hard to eat it before the ice cream melts. (Not a fan of the brain freeze if you eat to fast) The place is carry out and I usually eat in my car or lean against the car and strike up a conversation. Glad these old places persist. One of the things I look for in these old restaurants is cleanliness and maintenance of the building. On my visit today everything looked clean and well maintained. The Twin always has a steady business during my August visits. Not sure about the rest of the year. I have heard that the place has the same chili dog recipe that it had when it opened. When in the Irvine/Ravenna area stop by The Twin get you a cone (or cup) of ice cream with a chili dog. If it is a pretty day in August I may see you. I will be the old guy leaning against his car with a smile on his face big enough to transport you back to your childhood.

You can honestly get better food elsewhere, but you'll be hard pressed to find better soft serve ice cream and milkshakes anywhere in town.

They carry a slew of other dairy products such as cheese and butter. Flavors of ice cream vary as well as store hours based on the season. I believe their facebook page gives the most reliable source for hours, typically 11-9 through the summer. Staff is always super friendly, typically you'll just see Mrs. Rowlett making and serving ice cream while her brother is busy with the various cheeses and butter. Prices are sure to not break the bank and will certainly yield more than a few smiling faces indulging in such wonderful products. Craving more than a scoop or two? Well they've got half gallons ready to go home with you currently priced $12/each. My kids say Rowlett's is the best and I wholeheartedly agree!

I promise you, you've never tasted anything close to the coffee ice cream at Rowlett's Milkhouse Creamery. You'll thank me later. I took advantage of this beautiful fall day to drive to Campbellsvirg in Henry County and see this place for myself. Our office gets special treats on birthdays and I got to enjoy the coffee ice cream and I was in love. The texture was like silk on your tongue. The hint of coffee was just enough to fit through the sweetness to make it out of this world divine!!!!! So I'll shut my piehole about the coffee ice cream and talk about the other things Rowlett's has to offer. They have a large variety of cheeses, ice creams, ice creams and butter. I was looking forward to buying some butter for the banana bread I'm getting ready to make; however, they were sold out. Oh well, i'll have to make another trip there I guess. This business is locally owned by brother and sister Terry and Sharon Rowlett. I had the pleasure of meeting Sharon when I visited today and she was as nice as she could be. This is most definitely worth the drive and a great way to support local business. Y'all gotta make the trip. You won't regret it.
