Wow! WOW! 26 years and this little white house bakery is 100% worth the stop when traveling on I-64. If weather allows, there is outside seating in the grass or on the porch. They are closed Sun., Mon. And Tues.. There are these amazing iced sugar cookies, fudge, brownies, cakes, pies, cheesecakes, muffins, scones and little baby pies. Then if you want a savory bite they have that too, we did and it was delicious. Friendliest assistance, extra personable. Picked up a cookbook to give these recipes a spin in my kitchen. We were driving home from Frankfort KY and decided we needed a place to stop to have a bite for breakfast. My wife found this place on Google Maps, so we decided to stop. It was not far off the highway. We were greeted by a very cheerful young lady at the cash register. We told her we had never been here before, so she said that meant we would get a free sugar cookie. Nice! They did have breakfast sandwiches. I had an everything bagel with egg, cheese and sausage. My wife had a scone with egg and cheese. We added coffee. There was no place to sit inside, so we sat on the porch. It was very comfortable. Our friendly young lady brought us our sandwiches plus the coffee pot to fill our cups. Great service, plus a very tasty breakfast sandwiches. The sugar cookie was iced, so it was sweet and good. What a terrific place to stop on our long journey home. We were glad we did! read more

I visited on Thursday 8-9-23 Let me preface this review with a little backstory. I love butterscotch pie. The best butterscotch pie I've ever had was a homemade one from someone I knew through someone else. I've been on the hunt for a pie as good as that one for years. This lady once sold her pie at an auction for $350 because everyone there knew how good it was. I ain't that rich and my dreams of having her pie faded as the auction price raised. I have tried and reviewed pies from many different bakery's. I really made one lady mad when I said her pie was terrible, but those where the facts. If you'd like some entertainment you can find that review on Facebook and I'll tell ya, the comment section was pretty entertaining. So this isn't my first rodeo reviewing butterscotch pie. I will be brutally honest. Ok, with all that said, if the perfect pie was a 10/10 then this one is a solid 8.5/10. This is the best butterscotch pie I've purchased from any bakery. The only thing I can think I of to make it closer to the "perfect" one I had would be the filling to have added ooey gooey stuff. I wish I could get that old lady pie again, but since I can't this will definitely fill the craving. It is really good. Sometimes I wish I had never had that slice of Heaven because nothing will ever quite live up to it. She nearly ruined all future butterscotch pies. I'm happy I've found a good pie that satisfies the craving. I also tried the sugar cookie - I hear they are famous for these. I'm not a fan of sugar cookies, and this didn't change that for me. If you like sugar cookies I think you will really like them, but they aren't really for me. And yeah, I cried a little as I left that auction and watch that beautiful pie leave with someone else. I was visiting Morehead, and wanted to find a bakery. This was ranked among the top so I had to try it. As soon as you walk-in you're hit with the wonderful smell of the food. The place has two rooms filled with goodies. I was greeted as soon as I moved in and was given recommendations. Ultimately I ended up ordering the following items: honeybun cake, chicken salad, no bake chocolate oats cookie, and the croissant breakfast sandwich with sausage patty. I didn't get a chance to try the honeybun cake because my guy ate it lol. Although he did said it was really good. I enjoyed everything else, but the breakfast sandwich was AMAZING!! The croissant was soft and buttery, eggs were scrambled to perfection, and sausage patty is always good! Honestly, happy I don't live in Morehead because this place would take all my money on the croissant alone. lol. I visited for the first time, and they made sure we all got a free cookie, and they did an excellent job packing a breakfast to go, with our pickup. Their baked goods are tasty, and their scone breakfast sandwich is delicious! The best breakfast sandwich I've ever had, period! The prices are fantastic for what you get as well. We got two scone sandwiches that were MASSIVE, four muffins and 2 additional scones for cheaper than you would find at a fast food establishment. What they are known for are the bakery items and I'll tell you what... phenomenal. This is the best carrot cake I've ever had in my life. We also got the Artichoke Sandwich and Loaded baked potato soup. The sandwich was very good. However the soup was a little underwhelming, they need to add some flavor! Maybe try Dill. I get the joy of driving out to Morehead from Lexington every couple of months, and I make sure to bring anybody I'm traveling with to Root-A-Bakers for lunch. Picturesque little town with one of my favorite lunch spots around. Soups, salads, and desserts are all fantastic. Service is warm and efficient. I'm a diabetic -- they have low carb desserts, like actual low carb desserts with low GI sugar substitutes and flour substitutions. I cannot tell you the last time I've been able to order a slice of cheesecake in a restaurant! And it was mindblowingly good! If you find yourself in Morehead, there are no other options for lunch -- I mean, there probably are, but this is hands-down the gold standard. Just driving by and the word "BAKERY" caught my attention. Being a "fat guy" and having missed breakfast I was stopping lol! I LOVE a small town bakery when I'm traveling! So I mask up and get out when a purple haired lady comes out the door and ask to help me. Uhh yeah you can help me, open the door and step aside and let me have at the goodies inside! But alas she wouldn't step aside and wouldn't let me in. Covid she said. Well I'm double vaccinated, wearing an N95 mask, and you have on your mask, what's the problem? Let me at the baked goods! Nope, no coming in but she can "bring me a menu" lol! Lady, I don't have a clue what I want until I see what your baked goods look like! I eat with my eyes first! It's a bakery after all! That's why the cases are clear in the first place! But she wouldn't let me in. I thanked her for her time but told her I was going to leave. She said I didn't "have to do that"and they "were just trying to stay afloat". News alert, closing your business to paying customers isn't the best decision if "staying afloat" isn't your long term goal. Root-A-Baker's reminds me of why exploring restaurants no matter where you are can always unearth some gems. This is a family owned establishment and from the road appears to be a single family home. However, walking in you are greeted by the pleasant aroma of freshly baked sweets. People with savory palates won't be ignored here, as they also offer a limited menu of sandwiches and soups that are all homemade. For my visit, I ordered a loaded potato soup, Buffalo chicken sandwich and a ham and cheese scone. Everything was delicious, not over seasoned, and the atmosphere reminded me of being at someone's home. I didn't have a chance to try any of their sweets, but their cakes are legendary and I hope to return back soon to give them a try. read more

So surprised to find this unique spot has so few reviews. After traveling all over the lower 48, I will have to say Root-A-Bakers is in our top nationwide picks overall. From the friendly staff, appearance and most of all the delicious array of offerings, it's unparalleled. We had the bacon and spinach quiche, along with the choose three salads. We chose chicken, pimento cheese and pasta. Also tried the loaded potato salad and broccoli and cauliflower salad. Breads are baked daily and offerings include cheddar herb and cranberry walnut. We did not have a bad bite. And the desserts are "to die for." We tried the famous sugar cookies and the scones. If you're looking for a great breakfast scone, try the sausage and cheese one.
