My family and I had dinner here this evening and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Clean plates all around except for me but I took my leftovers to go and look very forward to enjoying them later. Fantastic service. No frills, hole in the wall kinda place but delicious country style food. Breakfast served all day and delicious homemade pies on the menu. I so wish I had some pics to share but I just dove right in to my chicken with mashed potatoes and white gravy with greens beans and a refreshing side salad. My entire meal was $11. This place gets my vote for the most authentic, friendly, country restaurant! I had a Manhattan sandwich, which I'd never heard of before...to this Nebraskan, it looked like a hot beef sandwich...and it was one of the best I've ever had. The fried okra and fried banana peppers were good. They have a dessert called the pretzel salad, the recipe of which apparently is a well kept secret. All I know is it had pretzels, cream cheese, whipped cream, and strawberries in a glaze. Don't miss it if they have it when you are here. Lastly, the price was perhaps the lowest we've paid for lunch on our entire trip! read more

Went in a couple weeks back and was greatly disappointed. The waitress was a young "teenage" blonde who does not know how to be a waitress. Food was mediocre this time, and seems that a lot of the older staff no longer works there. Except for one elderly lady who has been there every time we have been there. She was working her tail off trying to wait on tables, serve food, bus the tables, and run the register. She had recently suffered a fall, and you could tell that it was hindering her. This will probably be the last time we visit. Just isn't the same as it used to be. read more

I grew up in Stanton and ate at Bruen's hundreds of times but hadn't been there for many years until this visit back to my hometown...and boy, am I glad I did! I went for breakfast and ordered the biscuits and gravy combo that comes with eggs and a choice of meat. I chose bacon and asked for my eggs scrambled with cheese. I also ordered a side offer of fried potatoes. Everything was excellent! The biscuits were flaky inside and lightly crispy on the outside. The gravy was hot, tasty and great texture. There were 4 or 5 pieces of bacon that were cooked perfectly and the scrambled eggs were just right. The fried potatoes were sliced thin and deep fried to a golden brown finish...maybe slightly overcooked for my taste. I really like Cracker Barrel but given the option to go there or eat at Bruen's again, the choice would be easy! read more

Stoppers in Bruen's on the way out after a weekend wheeling in the RRG area. Old school, traditional, and good diners like this are hard to find nowadays. We had breakfast and both ordered the western omelets that were stuffed with all the fixings! We topped them off with a cup of chili. Our waitress was cheerful and on top of everything. I had a ham and cheese omelette (without the sides) and it was cubed ham and American cheese which neither are my favorites but I assumed it would be exactly that. It was cooked well and had plenty of both. Hubby had country ham, bacon, scrambled eggs and tomato slices all ordered a la carte. His eggs were cooked right, country ham salty enough and bacon and tomato were good. Total was ~$18 so the price was good. Service was prompt and polite and we got all the stares that non-locals warrant. The decor is Veteran respect and 3 pieces of taxidermy, a bobcat, mink, buck. Food wasn't good as usual, they were over run with customers waiting on food ....Seems like they have more busines than they can handle ..only good thing was my waitress, Christi....she was super nice and attentive , awesome waitress......All the waitresses were working very hard, Megan needs to get more help and a cashier to check people out....A customer cleaned my table off and wiped it down Megan, you have more business than you have space for and no parking spaces... After reading other reviews we decided to give it a try. The staff was friendly and service was good. We both ordered the beef Manhattan after being told it was most popular. We were both disappointed. It was very bland. The meat was in large chunks and many of them were stuck together. Much of the meat was fatty. I ordered a side of green beans and they were tasteless. I guess we should have taken the hint when we parked around back by the dumpster and had to fight feral cats for a parking spot. The stench of the dumpster about knocked us over as we got out of the car. That should have warned us not to stay. But it had been recommended so we soldiered on. We opened the door and walked in. The lack of AC and scent of possible septic issues should have had us running..... But we went in and were directed to " a table in the back". A table amongst junk and miscellaneous stuff strewn all over the place. The sign on the restroom door that read "DO NOT PUT TOILET PAPER IN THE TOILET" was not comforting. All I wanted to do was wash my face and hands. I promise you when I say, I have NEVER in my life walked into a filthier bathroom. And the stench! Did I mention this door opens directly across from the kitchen that had no door? I got back to our table. Picked up the menu that was covered in layers of stickiness and crumpled sheet of paper-- guess that was the specials. I set the menu down, looked across the table at another in our party and we agreed-- there was NO way we could stay a minute longer or risk eating anything that may come from that kitchen. We got up, tried the side door, it was open and we were out. I have already alerted the person who gave a recommendation that this may not be the same establishment it once was. And I am still trying to figure out why Powell County Health Department has not shut this place down on multiple violations!! This is a health crisis waiting to happen. read more
