I guess we should have taken the hint when we parked around back by the dumpster and had to fight feral cats for a parking spot. The stench of the dumpster about knocked us over as we got out of the car. That should have warned us not to stay. But it had been recommended so we soldiered on. We opened the door and walked in. The lack of AC and scent of possible septic issues should have had us running..... But we went in and were directed to " a table in the back". A table amongst junk and miscellaneous stuff strewn all over the place. The sign on the restroom door that read "DO NOT PUT TOILET PAPER IN THE TOILET" was not comforting. All I wanted to do was wash my face and hands. I promise you when I say, I have NEVER in my life walked into a filthier bathroom. And the stench! Did I mention this door opens directly across from the kitchen that had no door? I got back to our table. Picked up the menu that was covered in layers of stickiness and crumpled sheet of paper-- guess that was the specials. I set the menu down, looked across the table at another in our party and we agreed-- there was NO way we could stay a minute longer or risk eating anything that may come from that kitchen. We got up, tried the side door, it was open and we were out. I have already alerted the person who gave a recommendation that this may not be the same establishment it once was. And I am still trying to figure out why Powell County Health Department has not shut this place down on multiple violations!! This is a health crisis waiting to happen. read more

Everyone was so. Friendly just a hood down home Mom & Pop diner. Wasn't real hungry so I just had a grilled cheese. Ooey gooey goodness and left room for homemade butterscotch cream pie. YUMMO. We were in Powell Co. during deer season and found this place. It's nothing fancy but the food was good and the prices were extremely reasonable. We got lunch for 2 with drinks for $15. I had the Hot Ham and Cheese with fries (crinkle cut) and a cup of Veggie soup. The Veggie soup did have meat in it which wasn't an issue for me but might be for some. We visited on a Sunday at lunch and most of the tables were full. They do allow smoking inside which is a negative. My favorite part of the place was the Warm Morning heater. My Grandad had one just like it in his house years ago. I have visited this establishment a few times a year each year for the last 15 years. It's a dingy little diner but it's the only place to eat that isn't a chain restaurant. During my recent visit we waited 15 minutes as the waitress was busy serving food and cashing out bills. That's totally fine she was very busy, however the minute a local group of four walk in she walks right over and takes their drink order. My group of four hungry buddies hit Bruen's Restaurant after two days of RRG backpacking. Their menu was so inexpensive and food sounded so good that three guys ordered two meals. We were all quite happy with the breakfast and lunch items. My only disappointment involved two of us failing to get the server to give us any menu suggestions. Her vague response was basically that she's never been disappointed with anything. Come on you've got to give your customers more than that...you know, "our most popular menu item is blah blah blah." So I fended for myself and started with the fried banana peppers with ranch dressing because I had never heard of them before. All of us ate some and enjoyed them. For my meal I had the Roast Beef Manhattan. I've got to say that I've been to Manhattan a number of times and I didn't know they had a style of roast beef! Maybe a little bit marketing going on here... it was a big platter of tender roasted beef between two pieces of super soft white bread with a heaping pile of mashed potatoes - all covered with an ample amount of brown gravy. In other words a pot roast sandwich with gravy and mashed potatoes. It tasted like it was homemade and I couldn't finish all of the mashed potatoes. read more

Oh wow! That's how I would sum up my experience at Bruen's. I found this place by pure accident while searching on Yelp for little mom and pop places to eat at locally. Today I decided to try it out. My kids and I stopped there for lunch today. First, I've heard all my life, never judge a book by it's cover; and that absolutely holds true for this restaurant. From the outside, you really can't tell much about it. It's an old building, that really doesn't appear to be habitable from the outside. When I first pulled up, my initial thought was to go somewhere else.....I'm sure glad I didn't! Once you walk through those doors, you're instantly transported back in time to the small family restaurants of years ago. It's so homey and inviting inside, you can't help but feel at ease! There's even an old gas stove in there that still has the exposed stovepipe going up behind it! Them employees there are super friendly, and remind me of the little old ladies that used to run the restaurants I remember from my childhood! That also tells me they know what they're doing in the kitchen! They have quite a selection on their menu, comfort foods from biscuits and gravy, to pork tenderloin platters, or Roast Beef Manhattans! For myself, I chose a chicken in gravy platter with green beans and corn and Texas toast. My daughter ordered the tenderloin platter, with mashed potatoes, fried apples, and Texas toast. My son ordered a double cheeseburger with Mac and Cheese. Orders were placed, and we waited. After what I consider a reasonable wait time, our food came out.....we all sampled off each other's plates, and I can honestly say, NOTHING was bad! I was blown away at how tasty and juicy the chicken was, how tender the tenderloin was, and that cheeseburger......GIGANTIC!! I cleaned my plate, and decided to try some dessert, so I ordered a piece of chocolate pie.....I believe they brought me a quarter of the pie, gorgeous with mounds of fluffy merengue topping! Needless to say, it was enough to share with both my kids! To sum it up, you absolutely HAVE to give this place a try if you're anywhere close to Stanton KY! It's amazing and so cozy, you'll feel like you're at Grandma's house again! This was my first time eating here, but I will assure you it won't be our last!! I was traveling with a work colleague from Martin, KY to Lexington, and as noon approached, I used Yelp, and found that Bruen's was listed favorably. Always interested in new restaurants, it sounds very promising, and was distinuguished from the many pizza restaurants and fast food chains listed in the area. Both my colleague and I were very pleased with our lunch experience. We ordered cornbread as our choice of bread, and it was outstanding. I have no idea what there other breads are like, but I would urge you to order the cornbread. It was freshly made on a griddle, was moist, had a great corn flavor, and its warmth quickly melted the spread that was served with it. It's some of the best cornbread I have had. I ordered a side of hominy with my pulled pork sandwich, and the hominy came in a butter style sauce. I have only cooked with hominy a few times, had never had it as a side dish, and I enjoyed both the taste and the texture. I also ordered a side of mac and cheese, and it was good, though not as distinctive as the hominy. My pulled pork sandwich was quite good, with the sauce on the sweet side. It was served on a bun, and I ate every drop. I might have preferred that the pork pieces be a bit thicker (less pulled/less shredded), but aside from that had no complaints. The table next to us ordered what appeared to be two double hamburgers or double cheeseburgers, and I told my dining companion that she needed to take a look, and that it was worth being accused of startng because the burgers looked so good. They advertise as the best burger in town, and from the appearance that is easy to believe. The gentleman serving us was very friendly and attentive. We laughed when he asked us if we had left room for dessert. I thought the pricing was very good, and that it was a great lunch. They accept cash or check, but no credit cards. The exterior of the building was unassuming, and the interior was "homey, country, diner". I am giving this restuaurant a high rating, because it was such a pleasant surprise. If I were driving in this area in the future, i would definitely make a point to stop here, and I think it's worthwhile to go several miles out of your way to visit. As long as you are not expecting fine dining, and are instead looking for tasty well cooked food, this restaurant should be a place to visit. read more

For oh so many years we have always had this little hole in a wall restaurant. I started going to it. When I was a young girl in high school. Then it was known for good hotdogs and very popular hang out for the high school across the street. It is now popular with me for the Big Tenderloin breakfast with all the fixens that go with it. This is the prefect image of a diner. First off you don't find it where everything else is located. You actually get really lucky and find it the first time next to Post Office or you drive between the Landramat and the Valero Gas Station. Its a small cinder block building with a red metal roof. Parking is limited, so be a little creative just not at the gas station! Their best deal is a meal with a meat choice (pork tenderloin, grilled ham, chicken filet, chicken livers, meatloaf, and what ever else is wrote in menu that day), salad, and two veggies for $6.25! The ribeye sandwich tops out prices with fies and cole slaw at $6.45! But what if you want breakfast, how about $4.25 for standard egg, bacon, biscuits and gravy. I really ate there at 8pm and went back at 9 am for breakfast. But breakfast is all day. They have regular home style sandwichs like peanut butter, egg, hot dogs, burgers, and all are under $3. The atomosphere is small town prefection, you aren't from here and they know that. But they don't really care. You can find out about our peoples children, the county's affairs, and whether you are at someones table. The place is run by some older women and they do get you everything you need, but you aren't at a fast food place. The family and I ate here coming back from Red River Gorge. The food was typical country fare. Satisfying and filling are the watchwords, low fat it is not. I tried to order a dish without gravy and got a, "Oh honey, that wouldn't be good like that." Settled on pinto beans with corn cakes and the flavor and texture were excellent. Not bad for $2.75. The wife got the chili dog with fries and it was good. A word of warning. The restaurant is cash or check only and no signs were to be seen until checkout. The outside is a run down cinder block building, and the inside isn't much better, so if that bothers you then this isn't the eating place for you.
