We tried four Fish & Chips meals during out time in the Mendocino area. Please look for all 4 of our comparison reviews on yelp. Here's our ranking and preference for each of the four. Rollerville in Point Arena we enjoyed 3rd of the 4. Their Fish and Chips were the highest priced at $19, but you get 5 pieces of fish compared to 3-4 pieces at the other places we tried. Their fish was tasty and battered well, but seemed a bit over fried and greasier than other places. Their chowder is $10.50, but a very large bowl, enough for a meal, the largest bowl of the four places we tried. The chowder was thick and rich. We enjoyed their Calamari which are strips, not rings and tentacles. Even though Rollerville came in 3rd in our taste, it is still worth going to, we would eat there again. read more

Terrible service and mediocre food. Young girl took our drink order pretty quickly, but never brought the drinks. Someone else came over and asked for our drink order. By that time, we were ready to order our food. Burgers were overcooked and bland. Nothing special about this place. Another man was also complaining that he never got his drink. Quaint little spot with delicious food. We tried the frickles which were bites of crunchy and addictive pieces of fried pickles...I could've finished the whole plate myself. For our main entrees we had the fish and chips, captains platter(fried fish, prawns and calamari strips) and the Reuben sandwich special. The portions were big and we had to take some food home. The batter they use is so crunchy and not overly thick. The food wasn't overly greasy or oily, it was perfect. The staff/owners were so friendly and service was fast. Definitely a hidden gem! We arrived at Rollerville in search of some good clam chowder. Unfortunately they were still serving breakfast when we arrived a little after 11 (normally they only serve breakfast until noon on weekends but today, a Monday, was a holiday). We ordered biscuits and gravy, a biscuit and gravy style Benedict, and a regular Benedict. And then we waited, and waited some more as the patio filled up. About an hour later, we finally got our food. Although the wait was too long, good Lord was the food worth it. The gravy was hands down, the best I've ever had in a restaurant. Nice, we waited what seamed like forever. We got a spot outside in the fog, you would have thought it to be colder in the morning. They have a little enclosure with fire pits out which made it worth it. We quickly ordered to try and get food earlier because we were starving, but that didn't work. An hour later i was running out of things to say, or just occupy myself. Panic ensued. We got our dishes and it turned out great. Their menu is not overly exhausting or interesting but, it was done right. The hash browns weren't too thick to avoid the soggy stuff, pretty good. The Benedicts were a bit sour so avoid that if your not too keen. The omelets were as good as can get, nice job. read more

Six of us were on a 2-day motorcycle ride and we camped just North of Pt Arena. When we left camp we were starving for breakfast and headed to Rollerville Cafe after finding it online. We all got excited when we saw the menu. They have something for everyone, including housemade biscuits and gravy. Two of my buddies were curious about the biscuits and gravy and asked how big the serving was. The woman was hilarious when she described them..."These aint no sissy biscuits, they're big!" She wasn't lying. A half order is a single biscuit, approximately 3" thick, cut in half and slathered with gravy. They loved it. Another in our group asked if they had gluten-free bread. They do. He also asked if they had espresso, and they do. When our beverages were brought out by the waiter he laughingly asked, "Who ordered the fancy coffee?". We were all cracking up. I ordered the Ortega chile omelette as a scramble and added bacon. It also came with hash browns and toast. I doused it in hot sauce and devoured it. It was delicious. Everything here was great. The service, the food, the sunny patio, as well as the comedy. Really nice people serving really good food. I'll be back next time I'm in the area, for sure! read more

If it hasn't been asked already, maybe it should be: Do disasters make food taste better? I remember a few days after 9/11, some friends and I drove up to an old mill town near the Lost Coast where we were about to embark on a 2 day bike ride; it was our escape into the forest of trees that predate everything, as everything seemed to be coming to an end. And we came upon this wonderful little cafe, packed with people, great burgers and the freshest organic salad, just tucked away off the main road. Our city mouse tastes were duly impressed; a find in what seemed like the middle of nowhere to our outsider eyes. How did we even find it, pre-smart phone? Last week we spent near Irish Beach, taking in the beautiful drive up the PCH, the wild flowers on one side, the rugged coast on the other, and very few square or rectangular shapes (buildings) to mar it. But you get hungry eventually, and with the pandemic, the offerings are few and far between. Enter this cafe, and with its burgers, fries better than those from the golden arches (yeah, really), and perfect fish and chips. All very generous servings. Super nice staff, good COVID requirements: their outdoor space is a nice combination of plexiglass to block the wind, clear plastic top, but with a screened clerestory windows to keep the airflow up. Seems like they might have heaters (we were there for lunch)? A bit of normalcy and comfort in the time of pandemic. We'd definitely come back, disaster or no. read more

The only thing I couldn't totally sign off on is clean..there's an unfortunate leaky faucet that they use to fill their water pitcher that was in my ocd hubby's sightline. They handle it by keeping a bowl under it, the pitcher is in the bowl, then they come to your table with the drippy pitcher and the drippy water almost goes in your food. This grossed hubby out. Tiny cafe in the middle of nowhere. Point Arena only has a handful of restaurants to choose from, but this one was pretty good. We came for dinner, but the menu says that we could order off of the lunch menu as well. That was nice because it provided different options. My hubby had the fish tacos, which were huge and he said were really yummy. I ordered the shrimp and fries. The shrimp were tempura fried and HUGE. They came with fries that were perfectly crisp and salty. We thought the food was pretty good. Soda comes from a can, so no free refills here. I liked the solar powered toys in the window, i collect them myself so they were fun to look at. read more

We ate here twice on our vacation staying at the Light House. Everything we ate was delicious. The Monkey Omelet was amazing with hashbrowns. The locally made sage breakfast sausage was also delicious. It is from the same place where they get their local beef and it made a delicious, juicy, flavorful burger. We also loved the local habanero carrot hot sauce. I appreciate them sourcing so many things locally since they are very remote. We stopped here after our visit to Point Arena and we are so glad we did. We both had fish - I had fish tacos and my husband had fish and chips. He ordered the five-piece and they accidentally brought the three-piece, at first he was just going to let it go but then he decided he really wanted those two extra pieces! The fried fish was really good, fresh, not too much breading. The fish tacos had a wonderful spicy sauce. There are several tables out on their deck for outdoor dining and it was surprisingly warm out there considering this is not a warm spot. The fish-chips were as good as it gets and that's not easy to do. You can only do it with big, fresh, chunks of cod and that's what I got. 6 pieces of perfectly fried fish. A light batter which kept the pieces from being too greasy but crunchy and tasty all at the same time. The tartar sauce. I could have drank a few cups of that stuff! The chips were of the shoestring variety. Not my favorite but they were hot, golden brown, and I ate every last one! The wife's burger? BBQ bacon, cheddar burger with the onion rings. I was in the Point Arena area for New Year's and stumbled on this restaurant. It was one of the few open restaurants that served vegetarian food. The food was good and the portions were quite large. The Jalapeno poppers were the only one that I won't rate highly. It was sorta okay. The vegetarian sandwich was good and so was their salad. Frantically in search of hearty breakfast food and quickly approaching hanger, I came here on a Saturday morning right before noon. Indoor seating was crowded and it was quite toasty inside, but we were quickly seated outside and assured we could still order breakfast, HALLELUJAH! The waiter and manager on staff were so friendly and helpful, and had a very casual and comforting air. The food took a while to come out, probably because the restaurant was quite busy at this point, but we were armed with games and beautiful weather so it wasn't a problem. Also, good food takes time We ordered the crab benedict (one of the specials) and blueberry pancakes with a side of hash browns. The crab benedict had a delicious crab cake and the most subtle-ly lemon-y hollandaise sauce, and the hash browns were crisped to perfection. The crab benedict was pretty pricy ($18) but worth every penny in my mind. If I was looking for a cheaper breakfast, I would just order something non-seafood on the menu :) I would definitely return to the Rollerville Café if I am in the area again. There is not much in regards to restaurants in Point Arena. We were quite happy with what we found here. We came in for lunch with two small children. Its a little small so be prepared to sit close to everyone. I started with the Whaler Sandwich, its fried cod with all the fixins of a burger. It had the biggest hunk of melted cheese. I loved it! It was very good. More than little ol me could eat but such a great unique sandwich. I also had a cup of their homemade Chicken Noodle Soup. I loved it. Very hearty and very homey tasting. It was great on the cold day we came in to eat. Service is very nice. Its just so nice here anyway. We had a great experience. Id love to come back to try breakfast one day. Our group was staying at the Pt. Arena Lighthouse lodging for the weekend. The houses have a full kitchen and we made most of our meals, but skipped cooking one night to try out dinner at Rollerville. There aren't a lot of choices for dining out in the area and a lot of Yelpers seem to like Rollerville. We did make reservations for Sat. dinner, but it turned out to be unnecessary. The indoor seating is very small, but cozy. I think there were 9 tables for either groups of 2 to 4 people and one table for 8. They have more seating outdoor in the back. The eve we were there it wasn't terribly crowded. They close at 7:30 in the evening. My husband had the prime rib ($20.95) (their website say that they make prime rib on Fri and Sat. and it can be reserved, though we didn't), our friend and I both ordered the special of New York steak with crab cake ($23.95). The side salads that came with the dinners were your typical salad greens and croutons, but they added sliced strawberries, which made them a lot more interesting. My husband's prime rib was a bit redder than the med well he ordered, but it was flavorful and came with some spicy good horseradish. The New York steaks with gorgonzola sauce was very flavorful and tender. The crab cakes were light, rich, and had plenty of crab. The service was very attentive. All in all a very good place to eat and a great option if staying at the lighthouse (only 2 miles to yummy food). read more

I was enroute tp do a photo essay on the Pt Arena Light House. Unfortunately the lighthouse was closed. So not t o waste the long trip, we decided to stop and have a late lunch. We found this place right next door and since we were in the middle of cattle ranches I decided to order the Angus Hamburger, medium rare. And wow! Easily a 5-star burger, grilled just right.. It was served with a tossed salad, mised with carrots, cucumbers and strawberries. A really nice surprise. If you're on US1 by Port Arena, make a stop in this roadside cafe and you won't regret it. read more

Had lunch here the other day. They are reasonably priced with pleasant service and good food. Their clam chowder rivals Cove Azul. My husband tried the jalapeno cream cheese burger, which he said was one of the best on the coast. Their French fries are nice and crispy. I had the Reuben with corned beef for St. Patty's which was good. They have a convenient location right off Highway 1. It is a favorite for locals and close to the lighthouse. They offer outside seating as well. There isn't any wifi and the restrooms are located outside of the cafe, but those are.the only downsides. A regular spot to dine for us. read more

When you're the only game in town, I guess you can afford to be this bad. We both asked for coffee and water, water was never brought. Coffee was pretty bad. Food was so bland that no amount of salt and pepper could help it out. The toast was alright, but it's pretty hard to mess up toast. Wife asks for Tabasco sauce, "sure one sec," it never showed up. No eye contact, no follow up, no service of any kind. We overheard the head waitress tell the new girl, this is how to hand back their change, so they just take the bill off the top and you'll get a bigger tip. And don't even get me started on how overpriced the entire menu is. $$$ But, like I said, when you're the only game in town I guess you can do what you want.
