The location is in a good spot of downtown where parking isn't too difficult, and the building itself is very cozy and has a pleasant, intimate feel with large windows to prevent the space from feeling claustrophobic. But what good would all of this do if the food wasn't worth it? The menu is very broad and diverse, with full meal options (my SO and I did the Wakamatsu dinner and split it along with a Lion King roll), and having sampled their teriyaki beef, the tonkatsu, their sashimi, the rolls, and the sake, everything was hands down fantastic. The sashimi melted in our mouths, it was pretty fantastic, and the potstickers were very authentic - handmade and clearly traditional (I'm a potsticker snob and these guys kick butt!) I grew up in Hayward and remember seeing this place a million times. I pass it everyday.. and finally I went in and tried it for dinner. I've been missing out! The place itself is small. The staff was friendly, waitress was really nice and very cheery. It's not a fancy restaurant, but it's very homey. Everything we had was delish. Saba shioyaki, chicken karaage, unagidon, and tempura. I usually don't like tempura but I liked it there. Freshly made, the breading part itself was crispy, good flavor, the oil wasn't old and the vegetables/shrimp were really good. The prices are great and so are the portions! I also had the Wakamatsu Roll. I've never had a roll like that before- it had deep fried hamachi and shrimp. So good! I'm not usually a fan of fried rolls either. read more

Nice little neighborhood spot...not the best, but it wasn't the worst either. I ordered a shrimp tempura appetizer with rice, a two piece crab roll and a dragon roll...the tempura although the batter was fine...it was more batter than shrimp/prawn. The crab roll had way too much mayo...didn't taste bad, just too much mayo. Wakamatsu is a very cute family-run authentic Japanese restaurant. The sushi is delicious and so are their other entrees. The unagi is definitely one of my favorites I've had compared to other sushi places around here. A bit small on the inside but it has character. A bit slow sometimes so expect to wait a little bit when they are busy, but it's so worth it! Definitely one of my favorites in the Bay. read more

Best sushi in town! A hole in the wall, family owned. If you love sashimi, this is the best place to go. For each nigiri, the chef gives you a generous size of fish on a small piece of rice; great ratios! The fish practically melts in your mouth. Great quality and great prices. However, they don't have a lot of the conventional rolls if that is what you prefer. It's a small restaurant, so be prepared to wait if you're coming on a weekend night. Been here several times now. Come here for the nigiri and sashimi! I honestly wasn't expecting to be blown away with my bento box featuring the sashimi, but it was so unbelievably fresh! The owner is so sweet and shared a little history of him growing up in the Japanese countryside. Every time I come to this place, the sashimi quality seems to be consistently fresh. This time apart from my usual, I've also tried the umemaki. I would recommend this if you like sour. Amazing sushi and amazing chef! The staff and incredible chef are so polite and so accommodating. The raw fish is so good and buttery. The combinations of the rolls are really good. A big thing to try is the sushi pizza, a bed of rice with cooked fish and vegetables with a beautiful subtle lemon taste. With perfectly proportioned rolls and a very comforting and traditional ambiance this restaurant is definitely the first on the list of Japanese favorites. Will go back again soon! read more

We came here after searching on Yelp, and we're happy with our choice. The couple who runs this place is quite adorable. Don't expect supersonic service, but they are trying their best to serve the customers. Menu items are of reasonable value - and we definitely will come back to try more. The small restaurant is located in a non-descript building, along the main road (Foothill Blvd), and has a small parking lot. Great little sushi joint with an awesome sushi chef and I'm assuming the owner of the place, Joey. Finally made an my first appearance here since I was 13 or 14. The place still looks pretty much the same. I came here the other day with my awesome friend Tisha K. because I owed her a lunch! "No Peeeeee!" Inside joke. LOL! I ordered a lunch bento box with tempura and beef teriyaki for $7.95! Holler! The tempura was cool but the beef stole the show! It was tender and really tasty! She got the small chrashi which looked delish!We also ordered an order of mirugai nigiri or giant clam which he recomended to us! He turned us away from ordering ebi becaus ehe said that the quality wasn't that great. I love a sushi chef that refuses to serve inferior quality fish! We went here based upon Yelp reviews. Small place that doesn't seat very many people, but seemed clean and quiet. Got seated promptly. This is why the 1 star: -Waited approx. 25 mins. and not one waitress came to our table. They bypassed us and waited on people that came in after us. They never said a word to us, as my wife and kids and myself watched in amazement. We quietly got up and went down the block to the dual level Sushi Buffet, where the food was pretty damn good...not the best, but not the worst either. They were happy to serve us! I will NEVER visit this establishment again due to how rude we were treated here. I don't care how good the food is, you don't treat patrons in this manner....especially given the fact that this is an extremely SMALL business. Since a lot of people I'm following highly reviewed this place I really wanted to try it out. Another great sushi spot in Hayward is always appreciated. The interior is quaint although a bit tired. I think they could for a fresh paint job and try to hide certain eye sores. It reminds me of eating in my cheap old college apartment - and no, that doesn't mean I enjoyed the interior, lol. The menu is pretty long except there aren't many unique dishes. I expected more authentic Japanese dishes because everyone said it's so traditional. The usual sushi, bento boxes, tempura, and udon is offered. While I was waiting for my friend for lunch the only other customer was an obese woman asking for only fried dishes on the menu. By the time my friend and I left the place was full. My friend ordered the lunch special with gyoza (fried dumpling) and chicken teriyaki. I ordered the lunch special with sashimi and yakizakana (grilled makerel). Lunch special comes with soup, salad, rice, and a choice of two items. The soup is your standard miso soup in a small bowl. There's only seaweed, no tofu. The rest of the lunch special comes out in a bento box: rice, two options, salad, and honeydew melon. The food's visual presentation is really similar to Wakamatsu's interior, bland and unappealing. The food is mediocre. My yellow tail sashimi tasted like it wasn't that fresh. The soy sauce and wasabi are super weak too. However my yakizakana was tasty. For the price of the lunch special ($7.75) I wish there was more food! They even seem to skimp out on the rice, soup, and salad. Even the slice of honeydew melon is small. I don't mind having small portions but the quality and belly fill have to be top notch. After returning home from Wakamatsu's I had to make myself a sandwich! I didn't want to buy an extra appetizer because this place is expensive for the portion and quality you receive. ____ A high price for mediocre food. This review is long overdue it was a couple of years ago since I went to this place for the first time based on the Yelp reviews and I have never returned since. I ordered a sashimi plate and it was the worst quality fish and odd shaped cuts of fish I have ever experienced. My yellowtail was oddly dark colored and had red dots in it and each piece was a different shape, some small and triangular others were thin and others were thick. I wished I had taken pictures back then to show how bad it was. Based on the other pictures, it's pretty evident this chef has either lost it or never had the skills to begin with. Just look at the California rolls, maki rolls and sashimi you can see how oddly cut it is and inconsistent. I love this place, but if you are looking for pretty plates and huge amount of food, then this is not your place. None of that cream cheese or deep fried sushi nonsense here. As it should, each piece of sushi will fit in one bite. This is a quite a drive for us, but when we crave for sushi, we have to come here. Sashimi is super fresh. I am very sensitive to "fishy" taste and I will not eat sashimi at any of the sushi places in Fremont area. At wakamatsu, I eat white fish sashimi. White fish is more "fishy". Wasabi here is serious business too. None of those weak out of the tube wasabi. Even the ginger tastes like real ginger. Cooked seafood are also amazing here. The octopus/squid appetizer is delicious as well as agedashi tofu. Black cod and all the other fish plates are all super yummy. If you want real sushi, this is THE place. read more

Dear King/Queen of the Universe, God, whatever you call it, Please please give me a reason to like this city called Hayward...yes I know that its closer to work and it's a hell-of a lot cheaper so I will inevitably will be able to pay off Satan, his posse of debt collectors and the soul I sold for my education. All I ask for is one authentic sushi hole in the wall where I can bite into the freshest hamachi, maguro and sake, and it will make my tummy smile with delight. Make it affordable, so that I don't have to leave in tears, regretting that my little sushi fix will cost the equivalent of a great new pair of jeans and quite possibly my dignity. And while you're at it, make it a place that has that mom and pop feel where everyone seems like neighbors and they've been coming there for 20 years- that added charm always warms the cockles of my heart. The quality of the sushi is amazing. Everything is seasoned to perfection. They don't have a lot of rolls named after baseball teams or fat guys, but if you do something well why change it just to suit some idiots? The service leaves a lot to be desired, usually there is only one waitress and you can end up waiting 10 minutes to get a refill on a cup of tea. The sushi itself seems to come very quickly though, the sushi chef looks like a nice guy and I always see drunken couples up at the bar chatting with him. If I wasn't so shy I would probably try it as well. The interior (and come to think of it exterior as well) looks shabby. They have these tiny wooden chairs that couldn't possibly be considered comfortable by any stretch of the imagination and the tables are pretty small as well. I remember I came here in High School for someone's birthday. Huge party + small place = disaster. The service was super slow because they weren't used to our party size. The sushi was pretty good I must say. Way better than sushi house and most sushi places in the bay for suuuuure. However they DO expect you to tip big. Traumatizing moment was when the owners chased us down after we paid demanding that we give them more tip. The tip was smaller than usual because of the extremely slow service. I think one of us decided to return and give them more money...it really shouldn't be that way. However...now that I'm not in high school maybe I'll give then another try with a smaller party. My boyfriend took the wrong exit after getting my eyebrows done, so he decided to take me out to eat to make up for his mistake. I was craving sushi, and I found this place on yelp with my phone. Getting lost did not seem so bad anymore after having an amazing dining experience here! The place was quite packed, but we were able to be seated quickly. The waitress was very polite from the get go. She was the only waitress working, and she was still able to sere with a smile on her face. The owner, who is also the main sushi chef, was very welcoming as well. He came up to our table and apologized for the long wait for our sushi. Considering he was the only one making sushi, he actually made it in a timely manner. The boyfriend and I enjoyed their wakamatsu dinner special to hold us over anyway. His sushi was very fresh, tasty, and definitely worth the wait. On top of that, he saw that I was sanitizing my hands and personally brought me a wet nap! So I was back home in hayward for a bit and decided to grab some lunch with my sister before we headed out. She suggested a Japanese place on foothill. Good choice, sis! Wakamatsu is a nice little hole-in-the-wall Japanese place. Their menu has an assortment of appetizers, salads, rolls and nigiri all at an affordable price. I was feeling like chicken katsu (comes with salad, miso, 2 orange slices and rice) and some tobiko nigiri. My sis ordered a lion king roll. The lion king roll was rather small but it tasted great. The cooked salmon on top was not mushy and gross like some other places. The tobiko nigiri was alright. But my chicken katsu was fantastic. Every time I've gotten chicken katsu, it came as dry, small, flat, meager slices. Wakamastu served up some seriously thick pieces that were juicy too. The entire meal was about $20. But the portions were small. The atmosphere was decent. It felt comfortable and homey there. Furthermore, the staff were rather friendly. Parking is horrid. In short: great food, awesome price, somewhat small portions, friendly staff, good atmosphere, atrocious parking. I will be back and I recommend you guys stop by Wakamastu soon. read more

I judge all other sushi by the sushi I have at Wakamatsu. This was where I was first introduced to sushi, so granted I may be a bit biased, but after moving away from the area and sampling sushi in hundreds of other restaurants (I really like sushi), I still compare all other sushi to the sushi I get at Wakamatsu. The nagiri is fresh. Delicious and fresh. Joey, the sushi chef and owner, knows his fish. It is always full of flavor and tastes like it was just caught that morning. The part I love the most about Wakamatsu are the non-traditional rolls. Try the Hamachi Mango roll - this combination I have never seen done in any other sushi joint and HAS to be one of my favorites ever. The roll named after the sushi chef (Joey's Special), is a dream come true, with flavors and textures that are delightful. I've read in other revues that the rainbow roll leaves something to be desired, to which I say: if you want a CA roll, have a CA roll. To me, a real rainbow roll is all about the FISH, not fish on top of a CA roll. And while the CA roll is not bad at all, I am more interested in different and delightful flavors, which are offered in abundance at Wakamatsu. I also admit to being a regular, which means when the place is slow, Joey will try new roll combinations out on me and whoever I happen to be dining with. Joey is a wonderfully friendly man who loves to talk to all his customers, has a wicked and often naughty sense of humor, and makes it a joy to come in to the restaurant. The waitresses are friendly and prompt, Joey's wife behind the scenes cooks up wonders of Japanese food (I love their teriyaki sauce, as it is flavorful and doesn't do that icky gelatinous thing a lot of other teriyaki sauces do), and while the place is small and you might have to wait for a table, it is so worth it. read more

My bf and I went there for lunch on 2:30(cause the reviews on yelp was ok so we decide to try it) when we arrive there, they still have the open signal, after we went into the tiny restaurant, they just told me we close and dont serve anymore. The old lady waitress said this to us but the chef who work on sushi bar said it was ok. But I suddenly dont want to dine here anymore cause the bad service. So we decided to place a togo. We order 3 rolls, philly roll, lion king, super CA roll. We thought that would be enough for us. They are 20+ bucks, its kind of cheap for 3 rolls. I thought might the food here was ok so they have the high reviews. But I was shocked when I open my togo box. Every piece of sushi just to tiny pretty same the same size as my finger. I can eat the lion king roll just in 2 bites. We wont go back anymore!!! If there is a negative star I would no hesitate to put a minus 5 stars for them. Wakamatsu is a humble and homely looking little brother or sister to the fancier looking places in Hayward such as Tomo(yucky)dachi. However, this little sib packs a big punch in the gut to its evil bland tasting older sib. A slice of a restaurant in a weird shaped triangular building, Wakamatsu boasts probably less than 10 tables with a small 4-6 person sushi bar. Three employees through what I could see, but very yummy food. We had the following: Baked Scallop Nigiri - Yummy, fresh, mmm. Tasty. Salmon Skin Roll - Crispy crunchy meaty salmon skin with just the right amount of rice Rainbow Roll - This was alright...the slices of fish were a bit thin... Bento (Chicken Teriyaki and Tuna Sashimi) - The Tuna was excellent, melt in your mouth good, and the chicken teriyaki was good because it wasn't the standard cooked to a crisp chicken that you normally get. The chicken was soft, tender, and nicely grilled and the sauce wasn't too sweet! They also had natto! Which I don't see very much at other restaurants, because it is quite an acquired taste! The fish was fresh, the portions were decent, and the service came with a smile! AND, unlike Akaihana, the service was TIMELY. My boyfriend and I decided to come here for our little movie/dinner date night. He was really craving sushi and I found this place on Yelp and it had pretty good reviews so we wanted to give it a try. OH WHY DID MY FELLOW YELPERS STEER ME IN THE WRONG DIRECTION?! This is probably the worst sushi experience I've ever had (my boyfriend concurs). It was such a disappointment. Disappointment is an understatement. After we were done with our dinner (which ended up being $30 with tips included!), we went to Le Paradis to have a real meal (a four-star review for that place later). Needless to say, we were not full or satisfied at Wakamatsu. The portions are tiny as fudge and I've never had such low quality rolls. Our rolls were literally falling apart. Actually there were not even intact when the waitress brought them to our table. Half of my rice ended up on the table during the few seconds when the sushi was traveling from the plate to my mouth (and I'm Chinese so I have mad chopstick skillz). We ordered two rolls, the Joey Special and the unagi and avocado roll, and a sashimi plate. The rolls were decent in terms of taste but like I said, never had I experienced my sushi rolls falling apart before eating them. Our sashimi plate was a disaster. We were like "oooh 20 pieces of sashimi for only $13.50? What a deal!" Well you get less than what you pay for (let alone a good deal). TINY pieces of fish that did not even look fresh (so obviously they didn't taste fresh). I should have taken a photo of the sashimi plate to warn all y'all Yelpers to stay away but I didn't because they looked so pathetic on that plate (and I'm one of those "Asians taking photos of food"). Anyway, when the bill came, my jaw dropped because it was friggin' $26 for tiny pieces of fish and deteriorating rolls that did not make us full. I was so mad and sad and disappointed...but mostly hungry. So my boy and I left in search of better food and we found it at La Paradis. Long story short, I love my sushi, and I know good sushi when I taste and see it(Sushi Asahi, anyone?) but Wakamatsu is probably the worst sushi experience I've ever had. I can't seem to find a lot of Japanese-owned Japanese spots in the Bay Area...until I discovered Wakamatsu. A hidden little gem tucked away in downtown Hayward, the restaurant itself doesn't look anything near special, but you know what they say about Asian restaurants: "The jankier it looks, the better the food". With only one sushi chef working behind the counter, the authenticity of the food blows my mind. None of this decorative, smothered with "house special sauce", fancy fru-fru rolls (not that there's anything wrong with specialty rolls, but this wouldn't be the spot for that). Stick with the traditional entrees here: sashimi platter, donburi, udon, etc. I ended up with a small chirashi bowl for about $9. First off, the option of ordering a small bowl wins major points in my book. I can hardly ever finish a normal sized bowl with all that rice, so kudos to Wakamatsu for not leaving out us small-appetite patrons. Secondly, the fish was oh so delicious and fresh! With each bite that just slithered down my throat, I might have unconsciously let out a few gratifying moans and groans. Only true 4-5 star restaurants deserve that kind of reaction. Prices are extremely reasonable, especially the $7.75 bento box lunch special. This past Friday night my boyfriend and I were craving for something comforting to eat. We have driven by this place a couple times and were curious to see if this place was any good since we seen great reviews on Yelp. We came by around 7 pm and the place was starting to get full. We were sat right away by the bar area by the sushi chef. We were quickly greeted (which is a plus for me). The waitress asked us what we wanted to drink and we replied with hot tea. I knew what I wanted and ordered Nabayaki Udon (Chicken, Tempura, Veggies, noodles and soup). My boyfriend ordered the small Chirashi. We also ordered 1 spicy tuna roll and tempura with avocado roll. Our tea came out hot and we enjoyed it very much because it was a cold and muggy day. Soon after our food came and I must say I have NO complaints. The food is fresh and so good. I usually pick out stuff from my food that I don't like and give it to my non picky boyfriend. But this time I ate everything. My boyfriend enjoyed his food and said the sushi is fresh and can't wait to come back. I truly enjoyed the customer service and food here. I do recommend this place to anyone that wants authentic Japanese food. read more
