This is undoubtedly the best coffee place in the Princeton area, the most reliable place to get a nice variety of single-origin bean coffee. I love their Decaf and I love their Espresso Blend. I enjoy that the place is quiet, relatively smell free (just coffee smell that you'd expect), and that the staff is friendly. I go there to buy coffee to go, and to pick up grounded 200g bags to make in Chemex. The closest comparable roastery is Luminaries in Lambertville. This is the best one in the area! read more

In all my many visits to Princeton, I somehow have not visited Rojo for a caffeine pick me up. I was on the hunt for a new-to-me cafe where I could get an iced latte and get some work done. Yelp brought me right to Rojo's! I double checked that they had public wifi before ordering and then found a spot along the window to sit. They have a simple menu with everything you'd want from the basics to a few seasonal drinks, but I stuck with my go to oat milk latte. What's to love: -The staff was friendly and kind and my iced latte came out super quick. -There isn't too much seating, but what they have they made cozy and perfect for person to sit, hang out, chat with friends, etc. -My iced latte was pretty good! Good to know before you go: The wifi was terrible, unfortunately. I had to pack up and find another place to work because I could just not get any sort of internet. That, plus there being no bathroom makes this a less than ideal spot for remote workers/students looking to hunker down. They are right on Palmer Square (next door to Bent Spoon) and would be the ideal spot to grab a drink and sit outside. read more

I got a plain latte and it was actually really good. The quality of the espresso is impressive.

Stopped in on a recent trip to Princeton. The service was quick and location is small with very little seating. I went in the evening so it was not too busy. I got a caramel latte and it was good. I also ordered a small drip coffee which was very good. You do have to pay extra for syrups and milk substitutions. They had almond and oat available. You can buy bags of coffee in different blends to make at home. However, the lids did not fit correctly on the small cups. The sugar was also all together in one container instead of separated. read more

It's kind of a European style Café, without a lot of seating room. But a nice little standing bar and a few seats. The nicely done woodwork and cabinetry was also not lost on me. Very interesting choice of music for a Sunday morning. Terrible punk rock music. The coffee was bitter. Wouldn't recommend this place.

When thinking about a great cup of coffee, first I think of coffee itself, then I think of the people I am sharing it with. Coffee without company is peanut butter without jelly, SpongeBob without Patrick, Frosh Week without anybody getting McCosh'ed. That is to say: to me the warmth of coffee is in the company, and the warmth of company is in the coffee. Rojo's has delivered an experience superior in both regards to me, and that is why I hold it in such high regard. The coffee itself is my favorite that I have sampled amongst the local options. The roast is dark, bold, and fully of body without being too bitter. The cortado is my personal go to but the latte was also beautifully done. Also, I may be petty in holding a standard for this, but when ordering "for here" the coffee is served in a proper macchiato/cortado/latte cup properly suited for the drink, unlike the sad tubular cups I receive from a different, more notable local establishment. The pastries come from The Gingered Peach, which indeed are quite peachy. Finally, the employees are noticeably *passionate* about coffee. Coffee is not business to them, it is substance and it is beauty. On multiple visits now, I have heard the words "hey, you should try this cold brew I just made, it's really fantastic stuff" thrown around. Their passion raises the quality of their drinks a notch, filling my cup with passion as well as a heart-palpitating amount of caffeine. The company at Rojo's is what rounds out the shop to me. Though the seating is limited and the tables are small, the dark lighting and lack of loud chatter are what make the shop cozier to me than anywhere else. Rather than inspiring me to crack open my laptop and consult my Pocket Style Manual while considering the minefield that is my R2, the small tables remind me to rest my cup and enjoy a conversation with a friend, taking more time to talk than to think or drink. There have been multiple occasions in the past few weeks where I had been feeling gloomy, unmotivated, and lost. During this time, a simple question of "Want to go to Rojo's?" from two of my better friends (thanks Sabo and Pine Cones) helped turn my days around. As we chatted over a cortado, the worries of all else faded to laughs and I approached the days with new found motivation. These experiences are ones that I have lacked from other coffee shops, and hope to have more of at Rojo's when I return in the future. read more

As a kid I grew up thinking all coffee was Folgers crystals or Sanka. On special occasions, mom would "heat the water" on the stove in a special octagonal metal pitcher from the top shelf of the cupboard, and it smelled funny. They would still not let me taste it. Today I select roasted beans, blend them and then Breville and Mochamaster my way to a "good" cup. The great Princeton battle between Small World and Rojos has been since the start of Rojos. Not a competitor when it comes to the vibe Small World offers as it's been there for so long and is a community staple with ample seating, but when it comes to good coffee, Rojo's wins. Which I think was their goal- good quality coffee. The pricing matches the quality (high) but it's what you get from that 3rd wave shop vibe. Minimal seating so maybe 4 couples can have a coffee and conversation there. Right next to a ice cream shop too so make your own affogato :) read more

I decided to buy a bag of Midwive's Moonshine Rojo's house blend to take home after my trip. Taste is great! Had a kick to it especially coming off of drinking mainly dark roast blends. I came in here with high hopes given the great ratings. I ordered an iced vanilla latte and got 95% milk and 5% espresso. My latte basically looked and tasted like milk in a cup with ice; I questioned whether there was even espresso in the drink. The barista was too busy speaking to someone (a friend?) over the counter from the time I ordered to the time I got my drink and didn't acknowledge me as a customer at all. He just set down the iced latte and said what the drink was while setting it down. He still maintained his entire focus and eye contact on whoever he was talking to the entire time. Nonetheless, especially for the price, I would rather go to Small World, The Gingered Peach, or dare I even say Dunkin. read more

Walked in and felt like I was in a deliciously warm tea store (found out they had brewed chai tea all morning). Small space, started out quiet and folks began to trickle in including those who work there and were visiting on their off hours. It became more lively but definitely not too loud. In exploring my new 'hood, Rojo's has quickly become a favorite. Granted, I've only been here a few times but I've always found it a cozy little place for excellent loose leaf tea and a spot for a bit of work or reading. They also have a really lovely chai latte NOT from one of those box mixes. When I asked how they made their chai, the owner pulled out a huge bag of chai masala shipped from India and invited me to take a whiff. Delicious! (It's well-spiced and fragrant but not very sweet, which is my kind of chai but certainly not Starbucks.). The Tall Man finds their house-roasted coffee to be quite excellent. Drinks are not cheap, but the quality is definitely there. The atmosphere is warm, with lots of natural wood (all built out from a single French sycamore) and interesting metal work. The baristas are quite pleasant, and the owner is fascinating to meet if you happen to catch him at the cafe. A warning for telecommuters / cafe work hoppers: This may not be your ideal place to hunker down for hours with a laptop, since there is no wifi. While not having wifi is becoming a big no-no for coffee shops these days, I actually really appreciate that Rojo's is an unplugged oasis. When I asked to get something else he told me "I can't just give you free coffee. Put some more milk in it." I had just paid four dollars for this swill. I wound up dumping it. I do not have a sophisticated palate for coffee beverages, being one of those folks who usually orders a simple cup of coffee - anywhere - and either sips it au naturel or adds unsweetened vanilla almond beverage (at home) or half and half to their brew. No sugar. (I'm sweet enough.) The menu in coffee specialty shops is enough to produce an anxiety attack. (If I happen to order something sweet, I'd make an awful face!) (Well, more awful than my face already is, depending on one's perspective.) Recently, however, I've been watching documentaries on the history of coffee and am making an effort to expand my coffee horizons! Fortunately, the barista here was friendly and happy to explain the difference between the various beverages. I waded into new territory with the beverage in the attached photo. Ordered a cup of the Columbian roast and was honestly a bit disappointed. The first few sips of the coffee tasted a bit sour until I finally got accustomed to the taste. Not the best latte I've had. The cafe is in a quaint little square, with about 3 or 4 small tables. The barista was a little slower, and was on the phone, but still got the job done. The cafe itself was a tad bit dusty and dirty but I still took my order to stay. The latte was sour, as if the beans used were a little old. Cute coffee shop! I came here with some friends today for an afternoon pick-me-up and walked away with a positive impression. It's definitely a small coffee (and tea!) shop but it felt more cozy than cramped. They had various wares for sale on shelves throughout the store, but I was mostly interested in getting myself a hot cup of something tasty. I ended up choosing the chai latte (after seriously contemplating getting some tea) and enjoyed it. It wasn't absolutely life changing or anything but it got the job done. I've been living in Princeton for about 6 years, and I am honestly so disappointed in myself that I've never gone to this cafe. Like most Princeton natives, I would go to Small World for my iced coffee. After ordering the same thing at Rojo's, I can honestly say that Rojo's has THE BEST iced coffee in town. The student discount they gave me was also a cherry on top! Because it's tucked away around the shops in Palmer Square, it's a smaller cafe and has limited seating. In my opinion, its small size makes it feel so cozy. The baristas talk to their customers like they're family. They have definitely gained a new frequent customer. Amazing service with staff who know their stuff. I had their single origin Mexico coffee. Rarely do coffee shops do pourovers with a V60 setup, but that is what they use here and for good reason as I think it produces a better cup compared with a Chemex. I will 100% be coming back. read more
