Thomas sweet has been a family favorite for years and I was excited to visit after they relocated across the street. Food: my go-to and favorite thing here is a blend-in. Unlike other places with a blizzard/mcflurry like treat, a blend in takes hard icecream and turns it into a soft icecream like texture. Sweet cream with heath is an elite combo. Service: the girls at the counter were nice and quick in getting us help. Ambiance: definitely miss their old location across the street, but the new shop is nice. It's clean, and well decorated. It just doesn't feel as homey as the cafe. Value: the prices are reasonable and in line with most other icecream shops around. read more

This has been my local spot for years, first for ice cream and as I got older for the cafe drinks. I was so disappointed during my last visit just to see the lack of care in the upkeep of the cafe. Many tables were covered in crumbs and the floor was quite messy as well. Now this was a Tuesday afternoon with maybe 3 people inside and two young ladies working. There were very nice in taking my order and bringing it to my table but took no notice of the state of things around the room. For a good 20 minutes I had the unappealing view of a table where a previous customer had left a plate with a muffin wrapper and lots of crumbs. To be fair this is a casual spot and it's requested that customers pick up after themselves but if that hasn't been done you would think staff could come around and tidy up so that new customers coming in have somewhere to sit. I also understand that they can't necessarily be cleaning up and sweeping during hours when customers are around but the cafe was entirely empty for the majority of my stay and the two young women were just chatting behind the counter. I definitely believe it workers having their relaxed downtime but I did wish they would have at least glanced around and seen the tables that needed to be wiped down. Overall I just felt that the messiness made the cafe an unappealing place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee. It used to be such a cozy cafe but the lack of effort from staff to keep it clean made it less enjoyable than it otherwise would have been. read more

We came on a Sunday Afternoon and I ordered an Americano and the water to espresso proportion was completely off. It was basically coffee tea. When we politely mentioned it, the girl told us with an attitude that, "that's what an Americano is, expresó and water" and did nothing about it. Looove this hidden gem in Skillman. Same authentic flavor as in New Brunswick and Princeton but ample parking! The ice cream flavors change often for those that love to explore all of their flavors. However, I had to give them a 4 of 5 because I'm a plain Jane that enjoys my favorite banana ice cream. Unfortunately the past 2 times I went, they were out! Ughh. Once I had a banana and Oreo ice cream there that was to-die-for! One things for sure, they definitely keep you coming back for more as they never truly disappoint. Really enjoyed working and dining here! The wifi was reliable, the staff were polite and courteous, and the coffee/food was tasty. Note that they may have a limited menu when you come in, but it shouldn't be too much of an issue: when I came some of their soups and salads weren't available, but they had sandwiches, coffee, baked goods, and ice cream. Everything was clean and there were outlets available (although some tables do not have any outlets nearby - make sure you snag one of the ones with outlets!). It was pretty quiet so it was an excellent place to work/read/relax. It was a bit cold temperature-wise so you might want to bring a jacket. The service here is amazing. The person at the counter gave the best recommendations and let us try so many flavours (and even encouraged it!!! We love an ice cream place that isn't stingy) I'd 100% recommend the chocolate chip cookie ice cream. As the worker there put it--it's like the dough parts of cookie dough ice cream, but the flavor is entirety of the ice cream itself. Definitely hard to find a flavor like this elsewhere. It's a nice spot for anyone to get together. It's cafe/ice cream place. Adults and children can enjoy this spot. I have been visiting for 7 years and never had any issues. First and last time I will visit Tomas Sweet. My wife and I both ordered hard vanilla ice cream in waffle cones. Cones seemed to be stale and had a rubbery texture which at first was explained away as a "formula " problem. We were eventually given a choice of new orders or a refund, which was handled well, however the ice cream seemed to have less flavor than what we're used to from other places we have visited. This is obviously not a reflection on the staff or how they resolved the issue but a significant problem with quality.Lastly the cost is 30 percent above the norm, which only becomes a factor when the quality is off. read more

I love how large the space is and how much seating there is. A+ for space and ambiance. Much nicer vibe than a normal ice cream place, and it was so refreshing not to have to fight for a table (cough cough like at the nearby Bent Spoon where you feel like a burden to everyone for just being there). Also, ice cream places are often freezing inside but I was quite comfortable, so my friend and I were able to stay and chat for about an hour before we realized how much time had passed. The ice cream flavors I got were chocolate chip cookie (which is the best ice cream flavor ever to be invented anywhere), birthday cake (which was phenomenal), and Nutella (which was great, except that the lady gave me about one bites worth so I really didn't get to experience this flavor at all...) The ice cream quality is awesome, the flavors unique (though not as many fun flavors as other Thomas Sweet locations), and the setting is chill. My one complaint was that the server gave me such a minuscule amount of the Nutella flavor that it truly was only one bite's worth. Also, they don't have waffle cones, just cake and sugar. Overall, good experience. Definitely better than the Bent Spoon in Princeton (whose serving sizes are all child sized despite the high prices, and where you will never sit because they have one single table), but I think I might still prefer Thomas Sweets in New Brunswick. read more

Delicious ice cream, but I had a poor recent experience that's probably all too common with recent labor shortages. My wife and I ordered breakfast sandwiches and coffee. After 10+ minutes we finished our coffee and asked the cashier how much longer the food would be. She said, "5 more minutes" with no expression, went back to her phone and a minute later started making our meal, which finally arrived incorrectly and cold. read more

Great coffee! I get the regular or dark roast and it gets me ready to take on the world. I try to keep blinders on and not look at the amazing array of delicious desserts. The times I have indulged I have not been disappointed. In the fall they had these unbelievable apple cakes! Lately, I've been stuck on the chocolate croissants. Stopped in mid-day for some ice cream. This place is a disgrace to the other Thomas Sweet locations. I totally can understand tough times due to COVID, but this cafe looked like they were in the middle of shutting down and packing up to move. My boyfriend and I ordered ice cream. I don't know if he was new, but the employee had no idea how to use the soft serve machine. My cup of ice cream was half full and sad looking. My boyfriend ordered a cone, and the employee used his bare hands on the cone that didn't have any sort of paper wrapping around it. In addition to the cleanliness issue, the cone he made was so terrible and lopsided that we asked for a cup. He threw the ice cream into the cup. They were two of the most pathetic cups of ice cream we've ever seen to the point where we had to laugh. The poor employee needs skills and customer service training. Management should take note and train their employees while also cleaning up the space. read more

First the positives the ice cream is very very good. The coffee selection is large and is not bad if you like your dark roast maybe on the little "almost burnt" Side with a lot choices to add in. The decor is charming. There is usually space to sit down. Unfortunately the reason for the low ratings is the high prices and the attitude of the staff. I guess if you're in this area so close to Princeton maybe you should expect to be treated like the staff is better than the customer. The staff consists of mostly kids who seem more interested in talking to each other and their cell phones and they are to the customer. So if you don't mind interrupting their socialization they will get around to serving you eventually. Don't bother with the pastries they are mediocre and I honestly haven't tried any of the sandwiches so I cannot say anything there. If you are not in any hurry if you don't mind not being greeted with a smile or friendliness,and you don't mind paying for it -- the ice cream is very good and the coffee is not bad. And there is a ton of selections for any and all tastes. And it's a nice environment to sit in the specially if you want to catch up on the latest gossip from Montgomery high school. Formerly Orphas Coffee Shop, the completely renovated Thomas Sweet Cafe is what Montgomery has been missing: A place to go for fresh roasted fair-trade coffees, tasty home-made deserts and pastries, hot paninis for breakfast and lunch, AND the most amazing ice cream around, "imported" from that most famous Princeton namesake (can you say "Blend-Ins"?). What's great is that you can bring the family - ice cream for the kids - and coffee for the grown ups ...OK, maybe some ice cream for the grown ups,. too! The Cafe is actually two adjacent interconnected store fronts set back from the road somewhat in a strip mall across from Montgomery Shop Rite. The Cafe side retains the warm, eclectic atmosphere of its former resident with comfy seating and tables. Cool tunes are occasionally interrupted by the sound of frothing milk. Here you can get a nice hot latte, chai tea, sandwiches, and home-baked snacks and treats. You can even pick up a box of Thomas Sweet chocolate to go. I highly recommend the Hot Paninis!! Pass through the archway though and you enter the newly transformed Ice Cream space. Bright, cheery, and inviting with lots of classic ice-cream-parlor chairs and tables and funky art work surrounding the coffee roaster (you have to go when they are roasting beans...mmmmm). Gone are the cold cinder-block walls and clunky furniture. Enter a broad array of ice cream flavors that will keep you coming back again and again. Flavors run the range from simple to outrageous - and the selections change over time. There is always something new and interesting to try. I'm a big fan of Sweet Cream, Cinnamon, and Malted flavors. Everything I've had there so far is rich, creamy, and delicious - and NOT sickeningly sweet. They also have sugar-free selections and frozen yogurt, but I have not tried them yet. If you don't know where to start, try a "Blend In" - The Thomas Sweet signature mixture of Ice Cream and Candy Bars/Toppings blended into a smooth concoction. You have to watch them make it - you CAN'T get this anywhere else! The staff is pleasant and energetic (without being annoying). And - for all you Orphas fans - Larry is there! I hope he picks up his guitar again soon for more "Breakfast with Larry" performances on the weekends! I highly recommend this as both a peaceful respite for coffee and a treat, and a place to go with the entire family. I'm thrilled (!!!) that they are open late ('till 10 during the week and 'till 11 on the weekends) so there is a place to go after hitting Montgomery Cinema (across the street). Excellent ice cream. The staff at ts roast their own coffee on site. The espresso blend is roasted in a way which reduces the acid normally found in dark coffee. The staff is really friendly and hand picks the music heard over the pa system adding a rock track perfect for chilling out with ice cream or coffee. read more

Since I work in the area there, I often go for a good hot drink, pastry, sandwich, or soup, and of course ICE CREAM (though not as much in winter), and am never disappointed. It's not el cheapo, but it is certainly worth your money (my usual sandwich lasts me two lunches, let's put it that way).
