This place had a pretty unique vibe. It was like a cross match of a bar but with a Latin twist. Couple of TVs but with Latin decor, I really enjoyed the atmosphere. You pretty much walk in, grab a menu, then order and pay up front. Once they hand you your number, you seat yourself. Your seating options are at the bar, inside table seating, the indoor patio, or the outdoor patio. I could see where parking could be an issue for the restaurant since there's only parallel street parking available, but we got lucky. As far as the food, it was definitely average Mexican food. Nothing really stood out to me. I'm a sucker for fish tacos, and these tasted ordinary. What really made it for me though was the side of chipotle sauce that I ordered on the side. That $.75 was worth it! I slathered that saucy goodness on my tacos and on my black beans and rice. And if you're like me, you'll ask for a side of chips to eat with the black beans and rice. They do have a nice little selection of draft and bottled beer, but I sort of wished I had ordered one of their margaritas. They had a long list of tasty flavors! Next time, next time. Least favorite part of the night. Went to an awesome show at Saturn then took an uber over here only to find out the kitchen was CLOSED! Not even 1030 on a Thursday when the Yelp app advertises 11. Rojo is a cool hipster bar in the highlands area. I love coming during either spring or fall so that you can sit outside and enjoy a cool breeze. The inside has dim lighting and a casual ambiance. I typically show up in either my post work-out clothes or basically pajamas from the night before. No one's there to judge! My husband and I like going for brunch/lunch so that we can take advantage of either a pitcher of mimosas or bloody marys. Their margaritas are also delicious. Opt to go at irregular eating times because the place gets packed fast! We went yesterday at 3:00 PM and it was still crowded! We ordered from the $10.00 lunch menu for Restaurant Week. This is a fun little place with a hipster vibe. Went during happy hour on a cooler day so it was pretty packed inside. Got a sangria swirl margarita which was frozen. Loved the mix of the sweet sangria with the salty margarita. Yum! For my entree tried the chorizo tacos. The corn tortillas were soft and warm. The chorizo was charred just right and I loved the spice of the meat with the cool lettuce. Two tacos came with the order and they were absolutely stuffed with fillings which is awesome. The rice was nothing special but I enjoyed the side of black beans and the salsa that came with the entree. My friend got the chipotle pork burrito and I sampled it. We both loved the flavor of the shredded pork and the queso on top of the burrito. She got cole slaw on the side which she thought was dry and bland but was able to perk it up by mixing it with the chipotle sauce from the burrito. Went for lunch on Tuesday with my hubby and oldest son. Haven't been with kids before so had low expectations. While her thought the bacon rice burrito didn't sound good, hr enjoyed it-- and i love how they snuck in carrots and peas. My hubs and i ordered the burrito bowl special. I added shrimp. Rojo is great! Casual, neighborhood Mexican restaurant with an extensive menu full of big flavor! I lived nearby in Highland Park for a couple of years and I loved walking here! Such a nice vibe. I will say parking can be a challenge so I don't frequent nearly as much as I used to. During the winter they have a heated enclosed patio and when spring arrives they have a spacious outdoor patio that overlooks the park nearby. The menu has two sides, one with Latin dishes and one with more American fare. I usually order the Kate's salad, one of the specialties and add grilled Mahi. Yum! The BBQ pork burrito is big and full of flavor too. I've also ordered the pepper quesadilla and the spinach and mushroom dilla when I'm omitting meat. Both tasty, but I'd order a side as well, they tend to be on the smaller side. Salsa is made fresh and always tastes good. I really haven't had a dish I didn't like! My only quip is that it's somewhat pricey. By the time I order sides and entrees I pay about the same as going somewhere more upscale. read more

Food was good, not spectacular. The desert, which was a fried cheesecake was very good. Service was OK, but I'm not a big fan of restaurants where you order at the counter and then a waitress brings it out. It should be either full service or self-service--not a combination of the two. And, it leads to mix ups. We ordered the bandino tacos and steak fajitas at the same time as the dessert. The person at the counter gave us the option of putting the desert on hold. That totally made sense as we didn't know how long we would take eating our entrees. But, with the order at the counter, take a number, and put the number on your table, and wait for it to be brought out, our dessert got lost and never came out until after we mentioned it to someone and then had to mention to the same person again-15 minutes later. With order the counter and pick up at the counter or full service I don't see how this would have happened. The location of the restaurant was perhaps its most redeeming quality. It literally was in the middle of old craftsman style houses and a sunken Birmingham Park. ( you have to see it to see what I mean) The entire area was very hilly and actually quite charming. If I lived in the area I would definitely give this restaurant another try. Living out of town like I do, I'm not sure that it's special enough to bring me back. read more

Rojo is a little quirky spot in Highland park that is perfect if you can't decide if you want Mexican or American food. No worries they have two menus! I have jumped back and forth between the two trying their burgers and quesadillas. I have to say their pepper quesadilla was really good! If you are a bit hungrier I would suggest going more the burger and fries route. They have recently renovated the outside porch to have walls, so if you are coming with a pet there are only a few spots to choose from now outside. I would recommend this place for weekend mimosas. My friend ordered the Swiss mushroom burger and enjoyed it; the tomatoes and onions came on the side (helpful for picky eaters). My mom and I ordered the shrimp quesadillas. They were equal in quality (which was good). We also ordered queso and guacamole- both good but the guacamole also was a bit bland (still good tho). Queso was delicious (highly reccomend). They have an excellent outdoor seating area that's covered and dog-friendly. Tips for Rojo Newbies: 1) Stand in line to order food and then seat yourself. They'll bring your food to you when it's ready. 2) Parking can be a bit of a hassle. Just do what you can. 3) They'll sell you a bottle of champagne and a side of OJ for your mimosa. This place was recommended to me from many co workers after taking a poll on where to get dinner after work one day. I read reviews online before we went and was a bit scared due to some of the reviews stating that the workers were not friendly and the service was slow. While he wasn't overly friendly he wasn't that mean either. Per some of the reviews. I tried the skinny margarita (it was okay) and we got the chip trio with guac, salsa and corn salsa. Which was very good!! We asked the bartender what he recommended since it was our first time there. He gave a few of his favorites as well as another co worker who was behind the bar. I decided on the friend fish tacos! Our food arrived in a decent amount of time and it looked yummy! (See photos) my fish tacos came with a side of rice, black beans and some kind of sauce. It was a bit spicy and I didn't hate it but too spicy for me. My tacos were good! I got them with the corn tortilla! The food tasted fresh and the fish wasn't fishy! A plus! I truly enjoyed the food and would recommended this place to anyone who wants to try something new! They also have an American menu if a Latin flair isn't for you! I didn't give this place 5 stars since after you order your food you have to either go to the bar for more drinks or to the counter. It would be nice if they had a wait staff.
