We had a fun time at Roger Roessler. It's a few blocks down from the town square. They have a beautiful outdoor seating area surrounding by bushes so you don't feel like you're on the street and a few spaces inside with air conditioning for super hot days! Mark helped us and was very knowledgeable about the wines and local spots around town. He even gave us recommendations for where to taste next and where to eat! They're on the main road. Mark gave us a little history lesson about the town and the square. And told us that you can have open containers in the square so it's a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine or bottle under the trees. We ran into him later and he remembered us! Great guy. They have some seriously good wines at Roger Roessler Wines, a small tasting room that can be considered a hidden gem in the heart of Sonoma's wine country. It resides on Broadway, which leads to the heart of downtown Sonoma's wine country where other premiere tasting rooms and restaurants dot the historic Sonoma Square. Thanks to fellow elite Yelper Patricia S. for introducing me to this small independent vintner, who thanks to a generous Groupon deal, not only gives you a complimentary bottle of wine but 10 dollars off an additional bottle of wine once you purchase a tasting from the wine sampler menu, which is a selection two ounce pours of five of their signature wines. We actually made of day of our tastings throughout the Sonoma Valley and Roger Roessler was the first of our many stops of the day. They open on the dot at 11 a.m. and Roger Roessler is so small that they only have three working employees working there and the one associate that was there today, Ethan was ready to treat us like V.I.P.'s with wine tastings and pairings to start our day off right. Through Ethan, we learned that owners and brothers Roger and Richard Roessler began in the restaurant business by starting and owning no fewer than twenty-three different restaurants throughout their careers, including a few in Sonoma. By the 1990's they realized that wine making was were it was at and so he decided to sell all of them and started his own wine label that specialized in no fewer than seventeen different Pinot Noirs. By 2010, they moved onto new endeavors and sold their entire company and attempted to begin anew by buying grapes instead of growing them on their own, which has so far produced seven different Pinots Noirs. Our five tasting sample began with their Vin Blanc Rhône White wine which featured a combination of blends most prominent of which was the taste of honey that came from the oak barrels in which the wine was aged in. Ethan correctly called it their "porch pounder" as the flavors were rounded out nice and gentle and you could literally finish a bottle off in one sitting. The second pour was their Camp 4 Vineyard Grenache Blanc whose flavor was lively with a touch of tartness and will remind you of green apples. Ethan told us this wine was better paired with food such as grilled seafood such as salmon or shrimp or even with a nice hearty salad. Our third pour was perhaps my favorite, as it was their signature Black Pine Pinot Noir which was balanced and had an herbal taste with almost wood flavorings. With our next three wines, it just increased with its versatility with pairing with foods including freshly sliced strawberries that Ethan provided. Pour number four was one that Ethan called their underrated red wine called their Camp 4 Vineyard Grenache which came from vineyards in northern Santa Barbara County. With a unique smell of candles, this wine you get the flavors of what Ethan calls Briarpatchy fruit such as raspberries, dark cherries, blackberries and plums and with a hint of black pepper which provides a nice cooking spice finish this Granache pairs nicely with a nicely cooked steak or finish off with chocolate, which Ethan provided with a small piece of chocolate cake. Our fifth and final tasting was their 2015 Marioni-Roessler Proprietary Red Wine, which was soft and bold Bordeaux red blend which was completed in partnership with the owner of the historic Swiss Hotel restaurant in nearby Sonoma Square. These five were not only delectable but held us steady with small two ounce pours over five wines. Thankfully this kept our heads above water without us drowning in our own inebriation. This place is a MUST. They are known for their Pinot Red wines and they do a damn good job at it. They know whats up. This is our second visit and we have enjoyed our experience each time. Ethan was our host and he is so knowledgable of the history of Roger Roessler and the wine itself. We enjoyed his explanations and can't wait to come back again. The flight tastings are very reasonably priced. We love that they had a great variety of tastings to choose from. We've purchased the same two bottles: Black Pine and Marioni-Roessler (which is a wine that he made with his best friend) very very very delicious. Roger Roessler Wines. Home of their signature 2017 Pinot Noir (red). This wine bar is the perfect venue if you enjoy low key intimate environments, one on one time with the host as well as simple settings. It can get a little noisy as the wine bar is located near a busy street (if you choose to sit outside). The host was very knowledgeable when it came to the wines and just all around friendly. I would describe the wine tasting as a "great introduction for beginner wine drinkers." The tasting menu introduces 5 wines (2 whites and 3 reds). The Pinot Noir and the Chateau Des Garcinieres were my favorites from the tasting. The wine bar does not offer food , so I would suggest bringing snacks that pair great with wine for the full experience. I had the worst experience at this establishment. I purchased a Groupon but I didn't even get to use it. I do not want to give them my business and traded for another voucher. I had booked for a wine tasting for two today at 2:30pm to take my sister out for a girl's day for her birthday. I made the reservation over the phone. When we arrived, it was closed. In the tiniest font there was a little message saying they were closed due to illness and to call their number for any questions. I called the number and it went to voicemail. So my sister and I decided to hang around for a few minutes just in case someone showed up. I didn't receive any call to cancel my reservation prior to arriving so I thought that was a little weird that they had appointments and didn't notify their guests that they needed to close. We waited in the car for about 10 minutes and someone pulled in the driveway and got out. They went to the door and knocked a couple times and someone let them in. So we thought maybe we just needed to knock. They also turned on some of the lights. We got out of the car and proceeded to the front door. I got the man who opened the door's attention and when he came to the door he just poked his head out. I asked if they were closed because we had reservations for a tasting for two. He replied to us that he didn't know anything and that the hospitality manager was out sick and that he's sorry and again that he didn't know about any reservations and then shut the door in our faces. He didn't even check anything, take our number down to reschedule or even wait to see if we had any questions. It was extremely rude and disrespectful. I understand we are in a pandemic and this flu season is bad, so unforeseen circumstances and sickness can happen. But the lack of communication to cancel ahead of time (because we drove over 50 minutes to come out to the winery) and the response we received when we were asking about the tasting and reservation is just unacceptable. I was extremely disappointed because it was something I was trying to do for my sister. I will never go there again. read more

My girlfriend and I found this place by searching through Napa/Sonoma wine tasting groupons. Their groupon deal is a steal! Two tastings, a bottle of wine, and a discount on a 2nd bottle. We usually get the Big Bend Chardonnay ($30 bottle) for free and then use the $10 towards the purchase of the Chateau Des Garcinieres ($22 bottle) and end up getting it for $12 plus tax. I would definitely recommend trying the Chateau Des Garcinieres wine, it turned us on to dry rose's! We haven't gone back to sweet roses after they told us about this wine. They are the only winery in the US that imports and sells this wine. read more

Ethan was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. It was only my 2nd time wine tasting and my husband's 1st. He taught us how the pros do it but also encouraged us to focus on enjoying ourselves as opposed to tasting the wine the "right" or "professional" way. Ethan made us feel very comfortable. The wines were all great, and it was hard to choose one to take home. We decided on the chardonnay, and we can't wait to drink it at home. I have a great big thank you to give to Ethan for his superb customer service, knowledge on his wines, restaurant recommendations he provided and for an overall great experience during my visit. The wine selections were very nice, unique and worth the visit everytime. First he starts you off with a wine selection that lets you try a little bit of each style of wine they make, however, if you want to do a different tasting, i believe they have a couple of others you can choose from. They have an all Pinot tasting as that is their top wine style to make. R2 specializes in Pinot Noir but have now branch off into a few other styles they provide. Originally started with 17 different Pinot wines, they now carry 7 along with other styles of wines. The level of customer service that Ethan provided was second to none. One of the best in our trip. I would bring my friends here anytime for a tasting. The decor was really nice, relaxing and enjoyable. They have a nice, quaint patio for a couple or two but in the summer you may want to stay inside. Can get a little hot out there. In the end i took home two bottles with me and i didn't even mention the best part yet, everyone who does a tasting gets a free bottle to take home and $10 off on the second if you want to buy. read more

Came in today 8/9/14 because of a Group On I came across not knowing anything about the type of wines they offer...our server Piper was great humorous and friendly knowledgeable on the wines and general wine makes ...R2 is a bit smaller so if you have a group of 12 or more it might be a bit tight, but the outdoor seating makes for additional room. Unfortunately R2 does not serve food BUT Piper did recommend a few good places within walking distance (which is a plus after a few drinks) and she let us bring the food back and eat while we enjoyed our bottle of Big Bend Chardonnay. A great sampling of wines available (and Im more of a beer and whiskey person) I really enjoyed thier signature Black Pine Pinot Noir and I would recommend this place as a simple easy going place to check out for sampling wines when your in Sonoma. Bottle prices are also very resonable and they do offer to ship your selections if you are traveling and dont want to attempt to take anything on the plane read more

Went to visit yesterday afternoon after checking in at The Inn at Sonoma next door and was fortunate enough to be greeted by Ethan our friendly and knowledgeable host! Visited in Aug 2017. Arrived an hour before closing on a Friday night with a group of 6 girls starting a bachelorette weekend. The indoor tasting room was packed so we sat outside, ordered rose (delicious on a hot summer day) & the last of the tomato bruschetta appetizer. (AMAZING). Roger and his brother served us, checked back regularly and when we couldn't get an Uber for 45 minutes...Roger offered to drive us back to our house so we weren't late for our dinner reservations! Sadly, we didn't have time to go back to try their other wines on that trip, but this tasting room will be on my Sonoma list next time! read more

Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The wine flight had a variety of whites and reds. R2 is just far enough from the Sonoma Square that it might often get skipped, but I definitely recommend you make a visit here. Mind you, it's only about a block and a half from the square, but it's easy to become lazy when you're wine tasting! It was a warm day when Erin S. and I visited, and as we entered R2, it was cool and uncrowded. This spot seems very popular with the pedicab patron set, and it wasn't long before bikes started pulling up and the place was full. The guy pouring the wines was super mellow, almost to the point of seeming a little sleepy. But he was very nice, and became a bit more chatty as the room filled up. I enjoyed their whites, reds, and even the Hannah Rose, which is a very nice dry rose. Wines are reasonably priced. I only bought one bottle this time around, but I am sure I'll be back for more. read more

Absolutely horrible customer service. When we enter there was only one other couple in the entire place. As soon as we got there, the phone rang, and the only wine tour decided to take the phone call instead of greeting us. He was on the phone for literally 20 minutes as we sat there waiting for our first pour. He didn't seem to have any care to serve us, so we left. read more

Unfortunately we got turned away. We purchased a tasting through Groupon and called to schedule a tasting about 6 weeks later. Their hours stated they open at noon. However, when I called to schedule a tasting the person I answered, said he'd rather not come in until at least two. I explained that we had other tastings scheduled and couldn't come in later. He VERY grudgingly agreed to come in at noon. When we arrived at the day of our tasting, we were told that the person who does the tastings had called in sick three days in a row. We were told this in person. But for some reason the same cranky person who I talk to on the phone and could not pour the wine. If he knew in advance, his person had called in sick common courtesy would've been to call us and let us know in advance. He also stated that he couldn't do anything about it. He had not been paid yet by Groupon, so it "wasn't his problem". Definitely horrible customer service. I have been in the healthcare business for 20 years and have owned several clinics. Anytime we need to cancel a patient's appointment we give them a call. We don't wait for them to show up at our door and turn them away. read more

My girlfriend bought the Groupon deal to this place, so we made this our last stop of the afternoon after our Sonoma on the Spot tour of three other wine tastings. After three very enjoyable tastings, R2 was a bit of a let-down. When we walked in, there was absolutely no evidence of life. After a little hollering, a young woman came out, welcomed us, and handed us a wine list for the tasting. The wines weren't particularly spectacular, but they weren't bad either. There wasn't much in the way of conversation (she didn't seem particularly enthusiastic, but then again, it must have been a slow day), until another patron came in. Our deal allowed us to take a bottle home and have $15 towards a purchase, so we got a bottle of chardonnay and pinot noir and called it a day. The wines were alright, but if we were to come here again, we'd probably wait until the weather wasn't so hot and probably at any time other than a Sunday afternoon. read more

I loved this place! It's in a small little home-like setting and very casual, unlike the ritzy wineries you'll find in Napa that you get sick of once in awhile. The guy that works there (totally forgot his name :() was VERY nice. He explained the wines well and was very welcoming. The thing I most loved about this place were the prices! You would think that this meant the wine didn't taste good, but it did.
