Their wine portfolio is expansive; from brut sparkling, through still rosé and Sonoma Coast chardonnay, opulent Pinot Noirs and Cabs, concluding the tasting with an exceptional vintage of Beckstoffer Georges III Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Note that this is not a winery on a vineyard. Sojourn (pronounced SO-jern) Cellars is a boutique in downtown Sonoma. If you're looking for the beautiful vineyard experience, this ain't it. If that's not that important to you, then this is a great option for wine tasting! We called ahead to make reservations for a party of 2. They had availability the next day. We were 1 of 2 parties at our 11:30 am tasting on a Thursday. It was a very intimate experience. Jennifer was our sommelier and she did a great job of tailoring her explanations to our level of understanding of wine (which is not very high). The tasting was $35 per person. You pay ahead of time. She asked us to take a look at the menu and see if we were okay with all the types of wine they were offering. If we didn't want chardonnay, she would've given us a different pinot noir. Very nice touch. We decided to keep the menu as is though. We liked all of the wines we tasted! Note that the pours aren't very generous. She didn't pressure us to buy any bottles at all. It's not expected, but a $10 tip is appreciated, especially if you're not buying any bottles. It was a good experience and certainly cheaper than other wineries. read more

My husband and I have been members at Sojourn for about 7 years. I'm a bold cab fan and he is a Pinot fan. Sojourn's gaps crown Pinot hooked us on day 1 of our first tasting. They are by far our favorite winery and they have excellent customer service. I just opened my wine club shipment and was impressed by how thoughtfully it was all packaged. Duratherm insulation, each bottle plastic wrapped and an ice pack. We are members at a few other wineries in the area and they don't package their wines with that level of care. Sojourn takes pride in everything they do! Love them! Also, please try the Beckstoffer Georges III Cabernet! My favorite wine from Sojourn! Located near the town square in Sonoma in a little white house sits the tasting room for Sojourn Cellars. Prior to our visit I had only tasted their Oakville Cabernet and was impressed enough to book a tasting for four. It was raining (yes raining) on the day we tasted, so on arrival we needed to rush from the parking lot to the tasting room. A little damp we were escorted to our table and told our wine educator, Christine would be out in a moment to begin our tasting. Christine arrives and introduces herself as coming from the Paso Robles wine region. We tell her we love that area and she asked us what is our favorite winery? Without hesitation I say "Epoch" and she remembers serving us during our visit in 2021 (see my review on Epoch). We find this outstanding as she notes what table we sat at and also what wines we liked. That is a talent! Christine introduced us to the Sojourn portfolio which included Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon all representing different vineyards. The wines presented were gorgeous and our time with Christine very educating. My favorite wines were the Oakville Cabernet and Durell Chardonnay in which I purchased to go. My sister-in-law was so impressed she joined the wine club. We visit many wineries each year and Sojourn is definitely a standout. Worth a visit? It is 5 stars in my book. read more

This was a super way to spend a Saturday morning. It is not at a winery and you do have to put up with the street traffic but the wine is outstanding. The problem with beginning your week in Sonoma with a tasting session at the Sojourn tasting room is that it spoiled us for any other wine tasted the rest of the week. My previous exposure to Sojourn was their 2013 Gap's Crown Pinot Noir. It was superb and I scrounged around and found a few bottles still available (by then it was a 4 year old vintage of a highly rated wine). But I hadn't tasted anything else from Sojourn, and none of their current releases. So I looked forward to the tasting. There wasn't a bad, mediocre or even merely good wine among the flights. This boutique producer demonstrated quality in every single pour. Their Sangiacomo Chardonnay was absolutely delicious. Among the three Pinot Noir bottlings poured, all were excellent, but I still favored, if only marginally, the Gaps Crown Vineyard. But the big surprise was their Cabernet. We fell in love with it, enough to shell out $250 for the magnum, not an extravagance in which I often indulge. But we were swept away by the moment and the bevy of sublime wines we had had. We ordered a mixed-case of Chardonnays and Pinots, those more reasonably priced. There would not be any other wine purchases the remainder of the week. We tasted some very nice wines during the week, but none rose to the level of wines at Sojourn. On the one hand it was unfortunate to experience the high point of the week the first morning. But then again, it was a very special experience. It is a rare event to taste so many excellent wines in a single sitting. The tasting room is nicely appointed and our host was congenial and well informed. I enthusiastically recommend making an appointment for a tasting. read more

Tasting by appointment only and I could see why. They do a sit down tasting at the table and you get full on attention for the full 1-1.5 hours. We were lucky to come for a complimentary tasting since our friends were members and made a reservation a few days ahead of time. Their chards were creamy, even the crisp ones, which is already a great start. The pinots certainly stood out with the Riddle being one of the most memorable. The Gap Crown Pinot certainly has a fan following and I could see why. The full bodied, intense taste was very unique and the flavors continue to evolve long after the sip. We bought a bottle of the Home Ranch Cab. Usually not a fan of cabs, this one won me over as it is damn tasty and can hold its own or go well with something hearty. We walked away tipsy and happy, definitely a great place to try if you love reds and a smaller, more intimate setting. read more

I won a tasting for 10 at a fund raiser and took a group of ladies from work. We had an 11:00 appointment and they were ready for us with a seated tasting when we got there. We LOVED it!!! The winery is small but mighty! Great reds that everyone enjoyed and we all left with a couple of bottles. I thought that the tasting was very informative and I really enjoyed it. Since the winery is so small, you do need to scoot out once your tasting appointment is over because they might have another group behind you. A fantastic tasting experience especially considering that there isn't even a tour involved! Having seen their accolades in a recent issue of Wine Spectator, my brother and I were very interested to see what their pinots were about. Our host, Sarah, was lovely and did such a great job throughout our time there. She was very easy to talk to and clearly knowledgeable about not only Sojourn's story and winemaking, but also the winemaking in regions across the country. The wines certainly spoke for themselves as the entire portfolio of pinots was seriously impressive. We thoroughly enjoyed their Gap's Crown chardonnay as well and the sleeper hit was the Home Ranch Cuvee cabernet grown in Sonoma Valley - a damn fine CS that easily holds its own against some of Napa Valley's best. Overall, an absolute gem in Sonoma County and one worth visiting again and again. read more

Also this is a Pinot Noir specialist making some excellent Cab and Chard (I don't like whites, so I can't comment on the Chard). Okay, now to the review. This place is fantastic. They source their fruit from various locations throughout the Sonoma and Napa counties. Everything is carefully and thoughtfully managed by their winemaker and their owner. The folks working the tasting room are passionate about wine and really enjoy showcasing their product. They even have soil samples of different vineyards and regions to show you how the fruit can grow differently in each area. You get a pretty good sense of who they are and what they're passionate about. The tasting is thorough and comprehensive. They have a bunch of wines in their library and if you're enthusiastic, you might get to taste some extra stuff they have in the back...that makes it real fun. The Pinots are really exceptional here. Some favorites: Russian River Valley, Gap's Crown, Sangiacomo. Their Cab is also very good here. Wine club members don't get charged for shipping. They have lots of events throughout the year. For the quality of wine, the pricing here is very fair. We've been pretty happy with this club. It's a gem located in downtown Sonoma. read more

One of my favorite wineries - I love their pinots! Many are delicate, graphite-y and refined, perfect with food or standalone! However, they also have some amazing juicier pinots for when you want something heavier. They do their tastings as pre-book sit down events that I'm rarely organized enough to book- however they let us do the "kitchen tasting" when we drop in which honestly I much prefer - no pretense, just go to the kitchen and sample whatever. Wow. Pretty big wines and pretty reasonable prices. It was hard to find one that wasn't a match for us, and had a re-pour of one of the Cabs to confirm the one we loved the most. Pinots with 92-97 points, and very nice Cabs. Craig and Ziggy were just as cool as mentioned, and even helped us push our appointment time back after running a bit behind. If you are like us, making appointments is sometimes tough. However, this place is totally worth planning your entire day around (if it's your only appointment of the day). read more

My boyfriend and I spent the weekend in Sonoma for Labor day and had an amazing time being spoiled at the El Dorado Hotel and Kitchen. We happen to love Pinots and were encouraged to taste at Sojourn where they have wonderful Pinots and Cabs. As far as the wine goes, there wasn't a bottle we tried that we wouldn't have gladly taken home with us. Typically I may like 3 out of 5 at a decent winery, but was really impressed with what they had to offer and we purchased a few bottles. On to our host Jonathan. When I first started wine tasting, I was a bit intimidated by the cachet that Napa and Sonoma valley has always had. The last thing I would want was to spend a day with wine snobbery. But what I actually have found is that those that know the most about wine and truly have a passion that comes from the heart are some of the most salt of the earth people. I have been pleasantly surprised every time I take a trip out to the wineries and have enjoyed myself immensely... that is, until I came across Jonathan at Sojourn. After we sat down, he brought out several bottles for us to try. He poured us our first taste, plopped himself down at the end of the table and watched us drink it in complete silence. Poured the second, again sat and watched us drink it as we struggled to make conversation. I think another reviewer said, "He seemed bored and disinterested". I'd have to imagine we both had an encounter with the same guy. My boyfriend mentioned he worked on a local winery project where Jonathan then made an insulting remark about what "we locals" say about the place. Hey Jonathan, don't forget your roots my friend... you're from Boston. We "Californians" still consider you a transplant. I'd be surprised if the winemakers/owners know what an uninviting host they have back at the tasting room. Save yourself a trip and order any of the bottles online. You'll love the product and save yourself the unfortunate experience of the snobbery most of us try to avoid when visiting the wine country. Wow what a surprise after reading all the great reviews. My tasting was not as glowing as I would have hoped. Wines were good to very good however after spending the week here tasting at many wineries I found the tasting fee to the number of pours (5) to be overpriced. ($25) Even though there were other wines on their pour list they said that they did not feel like opening them. The gentleman (Jonathan) pouring seemed bored and uninterested. There were a total of 8 people at the tasting. EDIT: 2 weeks later. I contacted Sojourn and they refunded the tasting fee. I appreciated that. I was told that since it was the end of their wines they had available that was the reason for not as many wines being opened. They had not released their newer wines yet. My thought is if you don't have the wines to pour then lower the price of the tasting or do them for free until you release your new wines. read more

Love SOJOURN! It may seem like an off beat little place but these guys are serious about Pinot and Cab. Having contracts with great grape growers, they are producing some of my favorite pinots. The tasting room is right off the square , so its walkable snd easy to finf. It is by appointment only but call and see if someone's got an opening at their taste and join in. Very approachable staff and wines. I've enjoyed being on the mailing list and have attended a pop up dinner they hosted that was a lot if fun. My wife and I stumbled into the tasting room at Sojourn one day without calling ahead and the guy (Craig?) said "sure, come on in." About an hour later we stumbled out with about 2 cases of wine in our trunk and the satisfaction that we had discovered a really great winery. Seriously, this wine is good stuff. My only worry is that with all the favorable press Sojourn has been getting from the likes of the Wine Spectator, prices are inevitably going to reach the stratosphere. This is a wonderful private tasting room for serious wine drinkers. I'm actually surprised by some of the negative comments on the host, Jonathan, as he was our host at a tasting and didn't come off negatively at all! In fact, he was a breath of fresh air in terms of Sonoma/Napa wine aficionados. And, believe, me, there are some duds that really don't know wine! Why I love It: A+ on the wines, but you'd expect that coming here A on the experience, Jonathan was attentive, extremely knowledgeable, obviously passionate, fun to meet new people B+ on the decor in the room, but that's not really why you're there, is it? When we visited Sojourn this summer for the tasting it also included a foursome from SF visiting for the first time, and one who'd been there before. What I love is that everyone at the table gets in on the conversation and you get to really enjoy yourself, rather than just talk about wine. My feeling is a private tasting is about the experience as much as a the wine, so I like that. I like how the host sits at the table with you, and is there for the experience. I hate when hosts stand around you the whole time, watching your every move. I mean, this place is technically a dining room, so it should feel homey! Anyway, love it. Worth the reservation. A fantastic one-on-one tasting experience in Sonoma. We parked in town with the idea of popping into a tasting room and finding out where the smaller boutique wineries are. What we didn't realize was we parked right beside one. The Sojourn tasting cottage has a dining room table set with high quality crystal wine glasses so there's none of this pouring of wines into ghetto goblets. Craig sat down with us, explained each wine and created a nice environment for learning and enjoying the wines. The tasting is free though you won't leave empty handed (and shame on you if you do). I was suprised at how much I enjoyed Sojourn and its various wines, particularly the Pinot Noirs. My favorite Pinot, still, is from Laetita Winery in the Central Coast's Arroyo Grande, but Sojourn is a definite second. Surprisingly, Sojourn doesn't grow its own grapes, but rather purchases them. I had a distinct prejudice against this practice until tasting these wines. Furthermore, I enjoyed Sojourn's vineyard-designated Pinots much more than the clone varietals that Laetitia makes. It's a small winery, and I believe outside of a very few select restaurants, the only place to purchase their wines is at the tasting room itself. It's a definite must when visiting Sonoma town. read more

We visited sojourn last week during our post-Thanksgiving trip to Sonoma. It was the first winery we visited, so I held off reviewing it until we visited the others and I could compare and contrast them all. I thought that sojourn did a good job with the presentation of their wines, and it was nice that we all had three glasses in front of us at one time to really compare the various wines. Our group mentioned how we liked this when we were at other wineries and only had one wine in front of us. It made it hard to recall which ones we really enjoyed the most. This was a big plus for sojourn. We started our tasting by trying a couple of Chardonnays. None of us in the group are big white wine drinkers, but then we got into the pinot noirs. The pinots really varied in flavor, and we all enjoyed them. Definitely enjoyed some more than others. The one thing that keeps me from giving 5 stars is that we were only in a tasting room, and would have liked to have gotten more a behind the scenes kind of tour like we had at other wineries. We were looking for more of a unique experience than what we could get at a nice wine bar here in LA. Aside from this one small thing, our experience was good. I also thought the girl leading our tasting (can't remember her name, sorry!) was great. She was super nice, and really informative. read more

We had a reservation and went 45 min. early. They asked us to please go some where else until they were ready. We went somewhere else and ate cheese and wine. We came back and he refused to sell to us. It would be one thing if he stated we were driving and we aren't selling to you. But instead he refused outright to sell to us and was extremely rude even though we had a driver. This is my first time to Napa and everywhere has been absolutely wonderful, except here. He was very rude and disrespectful. Would not recommend to newcomers. I will not be going back. You couldn't pay me enough to return to the place that had been so rude. read more

We had a tasting here for the Sonoma Valley Reserve Pinot Tour and it was just delightful. A nice homey spot with an unpretentious feel that welcomes pros and novices alike when it comes to wine and tastings. Sojourn is by far my favorite winery in all of wine country. My husband discovered them about 6 years ago, and has been a member of their wine club ever since. We try to go at least once a year to pick up our allotment and to try new vintages. The tasting room is absolutely adorable and charming, and we never have a problem making a last minute reservation. I like the fact that they are appointment only because it allows them to create a more intimate and personal setting. All of the staff members have been incredibly friendly and helpful when it comes to making recommendations of both their own wines and other wineries in the area. We absolutely love their wines, especially the Gap's Crown pinot noir. The really do get better with age - give a bottle a couple of years and the nose/flavor will blow your mind. I think their tastings are generous and insightful, and they are usually more than happy to pour an extra taste of wines that you'd like to revisit before making a purchase. We've usually been sat with really nice people, although the last group we got sat with made us rather uncomfortable (obviously this does not reflect on the tasting salon itself). I would say the wine is 5 stars! Their Pinot Noir's are really excellent. I've been to the tasting room twice while in Sonoma. I just wish they had a Winery you could taste at, I personally enjoy that setting more. The tasting room can leave you feeling rushed while the Winery often is more laid back. We were a big fan of the wine. We tasted 1 Chardonnay, 4 Pinot, 1 Cab. The main focus here and the reason we went was the Pinot. It stands out! We went on a rec from a friend and it was as good as he said it was. They offer free shipping on 6 or more bottles which we usually don't see and believe is a very generous offer. The experience was a good sit down tasting with a casual discussion of their wine, regions/vineyards and she was able to answer questions about Sojourn's history. Appt needed. The location in downtown Sonoma is great. The only thing it lacks is a view, which you won't get at most tasting rooms. But downtown Sonoma is great and this is one of the best tasting rooms there. Downtown has a lot to offer (tasting rooms, shopping, dining, lodging) and is a great spot to spend some time. read more
