We have had Rod's Tree Service out in the past and have been reasonably happy with their work. They did not trim all the trees in the area where they actually did work. They also skipped trimming a tree in a separate area. We had to have them come back to finish the job.  When I called them back, they wanted to refund us a small amount for what they missed instead of coming back to complete the work (it was cheaper for them than sending the crew out again). We requested that they come out for a quote for a similar service and for additional work over the last two weeks. They have scheduled four appointments, but have not shown up for any of them. They have not called to let us know that they would not come by, either. It is clear that this company does not have the same respect or regard for their customers as they have shown in the past. Less than zero. DO NOT use this service. They did the original job just fine. When I had another tree fall, I obviously called them. They scheduled the job but failed to show up. I was unable to reach them for 2 days and they wanted to reschedule without any explanation as to why they didn't come out on the original date. I decided they weren't trustworthy and didn't reschedule. What's more, they billed the insurance company more than double the estimate and the insurance paid. They sent me the money so I waited for a bill from the tree service but nothing came. I received a call from the owner more than a month later, saying he was coming to my house to collect his money. He was so belligerent that I told him to send me a bill and not to come to my house. He said he was going to come to my house to discuss my behavior. I warned him that, if he did, I would call the police. He showed up today, without a bill, demanding his money. We called the police who said he had to leave or, they'd send a car and arrest him. He did leave but, after reading other reviews, I would caution everyone to steer clear of this company. read more

We needed to get our front tree removed due to its roots invading our plumbing pipes. Rods tree trimmer guys did a great job taking down a large tree in our front yard however barely trimmed our back tree when we asked for it to be trimmed way down to be out of our neighbors yards. This was part of our estimate. When Rod came out to grind down the front stump he was very unprofessional. When I told him we wanted the back tree trimmed down more he got very loud almost yelling at me. I got my husband ( who was at work) on speakerphone to talk to Rod and Rod asked me what my husband was B**** ing about. I felt very uncomfortable with my whole interaction with Rod. Our front tree is down. The grinding of the stump was not completed, front yard left a mess and my husband had to complete trimming our back tree himself. I would not recommend. read more

I had an appt with Rod's Tree Service today to do some tree trimming. March 13, 2023. Trim 5 trees front and back yards. Arriving between 12:00- 2:00pm. I spoke to both side neighbors to let them know. Moved vehicles out of the way. Took time off of work. I didn't hear anything from Rod's by 2:15pm so I called them. The man said "It had rained in Carmichael today at 8:00am so they sent the crew home." I said "It didn't rain at all in Elk Grove and no one called to tell me the appt was cancelled. MY NAME IS CAT R. On Monday 7/12/2021, The crew who cut down the tree were excellent. However, on 7/16/2021 when the owner (rod) came to grind the stump, the way I was treated was severely lacking. First when he noticed the decorative rocks near the stump he made a comment about the rocks hurting his grinder. So I as a 72 year old woman started moving the rocks (they are Heavy) after I moved 5 he said that was okay (absolutely no help from him whatsoever). After he ground the stump, he knocked on the door to be paid and I walked out to look at the job he did. I noticed that he didn't remove any of the debris from the grinding of the stump. When I questioned him he said "that was an extra charge". When I went to get my estimate I saw that there was nothing regarding a stump removal. I had to explain to him that the person who was to meet with me had come a day earlier than our appointment. He had it rolled up and stuck in the door handle. I was given no opportunity for clarification or to ask questions The charges were never explained to me. Last but not least, the owner told me that my son could help me pick up the debris and we could put it in my yard and garden can. We have used Rod's tree service three times. The first time was to grind a stump from a fallen tree. They did a great job. They came back and took out 5 50 foot trees including grinding the stumps out. This was really difficult job as the trees had grown on the property line and into the fence. Rod's team flew around on the tree tops like flying trapeze people. Then Rod came in with his mega grinder and removed all the stumps. Recently we had a crew come up to trim the "beard" off a palm tree. Again a stellar experience with them. Not only do they show up when promised and do a great job, they were significantly less expensive than other services. read more

Paid $$$$ to have one tree taken down and another tree thinned out. Crew came out timely and very professional, however, they did not thin the tree as requested. I still have heavy limbs hanging. They stacked the wood from the tree for us, which was very helpful, instead of leaving it in the middle of our front yard. Stump grinder did not show up on the scheduled day, but showed up without notice the next day. Stump grinder sent wood flying, hitting my vehicles in the driveway. No damage, but not professional. Aaron informed me he would help us load the tree stump chips into our green waste then never showed up. We are elderly and have used Rods service for 18 years and I left a message for them about this poor service and never heard back from them. Now we have to find another tree service to finish the job we paid Rods to do. Will no longer use their poor services! Very disappointing! read more

This company is a waste of money and dangerous! Stay away! Rod is unprofessional, rude, he does shitty work when he tries to fix what his crew broke, and he's flat out crazy and inappropriate. Rod and his crew were unreliable and did not show up when they said they were going to -multiple times. He left my property a mess and wanted to charge me an extra $250-$300 to clean it up, even though the quote shows he's suppose to clean up. His first crew broke my shovel, killed a healthy 7 foot redwood tree, broke my fence in 7 places, broke my brand new chicken coop, AND didn't tell me- I had to find out on my own. The second crew a week or more later (after multiple phone calls) said that the first crew wasn't right about where the tree would fall. They did a better job on the tree. The owner Rod, said he'd fix things so I was happy. He replaced the redwood with two foot high fruit trees- but did not plant them. He replaced the shovel. He decided to fix the issues himself - and he just threw material on without stapling or nailing things on- it was a hack job. At 11:45 am he said he'd be back in an hour but didn't show up until 5:30 pm. and dark to do the work. I even fed them a hot dinner that I made. He and his helper painted the fence. After I realized that they had no intention of cleaning up the ground stump I complained. After he yelled at me and told me my 2 year old twin babies can clean it up or my 9 year old boy- he had his guy throw some wood chips over the fence with wet paint. What a mess! He announced he was going to my neighbor at 8:30 pm to ask for a pitch fork. I told him NO and that I would text them in case it was too late. Rod marched right over there and actually had the audacity and the stupidity of turning their front door knob. It completely freaked them out and they told me later how creepy Rod was acting. He made them feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Everyone was upset - he was yelling at us demanding money right away. My husband just wanted to get rid of him and have him leave our property so he handed Rod the money. Upon inspection, once the kids were in bed we discovered what a crappy shitty job he did, he even left holes in the wiring where predators could get to the chickens. The stump ground wood all over the place is horrendous- now I have to pay someone to remove it before my dog and kids get into it and bring it all into the house. I'm furious! This is NOT worth $1850 for taking down one tree. We shouldn't have given him the full amount, but we were so anxious to rid of this horrible man. Never again will I go back to this company. Dishonest, unprofessional, bad communication, unreliable, and sloppy, and his demeanor and actions tonight made us feel stressed out and unsafe. The driver who dumped wood chips on my driveway BLOCKED MY GATE AND THE GATE OF MY NEIGHBORS AFTER GIVEN SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS TO PUT THE WOOD CHIPS AWAY FROM THE GATES. This company participates in www.getchipdrop.com and provides free wood chips. I gave instructions to the website, and to the driver or person who contacted me 30 minutes before delivery. These people may be good at trimming trees, but they are careless in other ways. I'd never have these people trim my trees because if they are careless about dumping their wood chips, THESE SAME PEOPLE may not follow instructions for tree trimming. They did the job...eventually. The first appointment, for the quote, was just forgotten. Plain and simple. But we gave them another chance because our neighbor had used them and recommended them. We got the quote but then they didn't show up to do the job! I had taken the day off from work because I didn't want them bringing down the wrong trees, but apparently they ran late on the job before ours so just quit for the day and didn't see any reason to let me know. I was darn mad by this time but they appeased me by scheduling a new time around my schedule. I saw on their website that they accept most credit cards but when I wanted to use one to pay, the crew couldn't take it and told me to call the office, which I did. I was told there would be a service charge (I can't recall exactly what the charge was but it was crazy high, like maybe 20%!) for using a cc since they had to pay a fee to the bank. I told them that was unacceptable and I was willing to pay a service fee but not more than 3%. They accepted that, but I was miffed again because that should have been mentioned on the website. Why can't we give zero stars. First of all the guy that came out to neighbors house was rude and unprofessional at best. Be very careful with them especially with there billing. Trying to bill for someone who never had a contract with them. I suspect that during storms they try and double dip on payment by trying to bill multiple neighbors for the same job. (no proof on this yet) When one neighbors tree falls in to neighbor's house I think they try and bill both neighbors for the cost through there insurance. Not going into much detail but I have already started a case with the CSLB and also a FOIA with the California Department of insurance on there billing with any insurance company's in last year . Don't have any proof yet but it's just my crap detector is going off big time. just to protect my self from any lawsuits this is just my gut feeling. They did an awesome job on our tree in three hours they took it down to the bare top and were very careful to not mess anything up in the yard. They were courteous and polite and moved things out of the way and put everything back again. They cleaned up every leaf on the ground and driveway. They do a decent job but they are not responsive at all. They never pick up the phone and they respond to your messages when they feel like it. It also took several weeks to get the payment finalized and they charged 5% fee to use a credit card which they never mentioned on their website. Well, I thought I would use a local company. I called Rod's Tree Service Left a VM later in the day I did get a call back he wanted to come the next day in the morning I requested for the weekend or the following week. an appointment was set for Sunday Morning between 08 - 10. well, he no showed. I went onto Yelp and saw now that Rod's tree service is not reliable and no showing. I cant rate the quality of service but Customer serve is lacking and no follow through. What a great company. I have a huge tree (probably 45ft high) and I needed the mistletoe cut out of it and it trimmed up. I contacted Rod's and had someone at my house giving me a quote within 24 hours. This was on the Friday before Presidents Day. They were extremely reasonable so I instantly agreed to use their service. The representative said it could be a few days before they could be out, but I would get a call the following Tuesday to schedule an appointment. This company was actually at my house that Tuesday morning at 10:30 and was finished in an hour and a half. This included a very good clean up job. Rod's knew I was driving from San Mateo to meet them at my property in Sacramento (2+ hours driving). They scheduled the appointment for 10 am and would not accommodate my request for 11 am so I could avoid San Francisco rush hour traffic. At 10:30 am, while I was waiting at the property, Rod's estimator called and began inane chit chat -- "hi, how are you? we worked for you before, right? Wasn't it 3 years ago?" yadda, yadda, yadda. Then, after "I know you are driving up from San Francisco" he dropped the bomb-- they were not coming! Stunned, I waited a good 30 seconds, but he gave no explanation, no apology, nothing but silence. I hung up rather than say what first came to mind. The next day, the same estimator called and asked if I'd hired anyone yet. I said I'd never hire Rod's. He then claimed, for the first time, that one of his crew had an accident and that was why he stood me up. I think he was lying adding insult to injury. read more

Had an appointment for a Wednesday morning between 8-10 am, Rod calls Thursday morning to ask what part of town I'm in (we already discussed that). I inform him he was supposed to be there yesteday and he didn't call or anything to let me know. His response was " so do you want me to do the job or not?"
