Once through to the back where the courts are, you head back downhill to the courts themselves. There are 16 courts total. The area is surrounded by woods so it is nice and quiet. The courts are blue and in decent shape and there are lots of grassy areas for spectators and shade. The parking lot is small and we witnessed many people parking on the lawn due to both lack of space and shade.

Today I took my kids through the trails in the park for the first time in over a decade and was nearly aghast at how much canopy the city has removed. It appears the 2019 creek stabilization project nearly ruined the pristine beauty of this park. I've attached satellite images of the park before and after the stabilization project, and you can see just how much canopy the city removed as part of the renovations. They have replaced what was a beautiful, rugged, meandering set of trails with a nearly straight shot through the park on the north edge, decimating the canopy in the process all for a boring, uninventive gravel path. It seems reasonable to expect that some amount of foliage would have to be cut back as part of the creek stabilization process, but what I'm seeing today seems excessive and like it was a stylistic choice to provide an inoffensive, plain suburban walking path through the park as part of the renovations. That would be fine if it hadn't nearly ruined the rugged, dense foliage that made the original trails and creek area an unheralded gem of Coppell. The good news is Hunterwood Park is undaunted and, despite the neutering, is still a great oasis in Coppell. I do fear for the upcoming additional stabilization efforts, though, and what some middle-management parks department bureaucrat might do to strip this park of its remaining majesty.

Not typically busy or over-crowded, you can really feel you've stepped away from the city here a bit. I've enjoyed watching and photographing butterflies/insects here, swinging on the big-kid swings, walking the trail (it might be 1/4 mile around) and having my lunch at one of the two picnic tables. I've also seen some unique birds here and though it'd be smart to bring binoculars sometime to bird-watch. Those who feel inspired by planes/travel can also enjoy watching planes landing and taking off from DFW nearby. You can also see downtown Dallas far-off in the distance. My main recommendations for improvements would be more shade trees for the trail, more plantings to feed/attract butterflies, and a port-a-John. There is currently no option for restroom needs and I've occasionally seen evidence of people taking that liberty out in the park

I've been here a handful of times with my sweet baby and we've walked all around the property. Each amenity is well designed, maintained, and landscaped. I like coming here because it's clean and close, and while it's never felt overcrowded it's still busy enough to feel safe. Here's what you'll find: BMX Trail League Fields (baseball, soccer) Practice Fields Concessions (during certain events) Natural Area Playgrounds Picnic Areas with picnic tables Grills Restrooms 2 Pavilions (large, concrete, covered, capacity of 40 each) The playgrounds and picnic tables have plenty of shade, which is a necessity. The playgrounds are pretty fun -- I'd have loved them as a kid with all the bridges, monkey bars, and swings. There's even a giant swing, this oversized red plastic seat that little kids all squeeze on together. It's also fun for family selfie photo sessions. Come here for a leisurely park visit. Bring lunch and a blanket and a book. Maybe a baby.

At one time it was populated by the working class. One of my acquaintances and peripheril friends was Stevie Ray Vaughn. We went to the same elementary and High School. This park was a " Hang out" back in the day. Now,I didn't do much hanging out here and I'm not sure about Stevie. I do know his childhood home is right down the street. So possibly when the City of Dallas decided to honor Stevie and his brother Jimmy,Kiest park was a good place to do it. Last September which would have been Stevie's 67 th birthday,a memorial steel art sculpture depicting Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Vaughn was dedicated here. Stevie was a great musician taken from us way too soon. I think the City did a great job remembering him with this surprisingly good steel sculpture. If you're in Dallas,it's definitely worth the trip. If you are a Stevie Ray fan, it's a must do. Go!
