Giant windows letting in copious amounts of light in the winter, lots of seating, and a huge variety of breakfast and lunch items make this a favorite of students and workers alike in downtown Spokane. It's got a well-loved aesthetic (read: divey), but it is a spacious, high-ceilinged place to meet up with a study group, do some work, or snag a coffee and journal about your feelings. Rocket baked goods (especially the bagels with flavored cream cheese) are crave worthy and this location has beer and wine as well. Their internet is sufficient for basic use and free parking in the lot just to the east of the Carnegie building. Oh my gosh what a treat! Just happened upon this coffee house open past the dinner hour. Stopped in and found a wonderful CARROT CAKE and ORANCE MOCAH SPECIALTY COFFEE DRINK. "Cafe Gennera". Fresh delicate orange peel steamed in with the milk, touch of chocolate. Love the aromatics and perfect pairing with my dessert choice. read more

I live a half a block away; and rather wheel myself a mile to a more friendly cafe. I hate the atmosphere; pretentious with out merit or need. Food sub par at best. For the life of me I can't figure out why people go back to this place. I don't know their system, but more often then not pastries, bagels and bread taste old or even stale. The one on first is a HUGE pain if you're physically handicapped and the four or five times despite being in a chair haven't gotten help from employees. OTHER customers stop their doings and have assisted me and be done...after they helped me...5 min. later staff asked once if I needed help. I don't expect the royal treatment; and truly I tip heavily for good service or what I call extra help I may require for my disabilities. I don't feel I have too, I think it's a nice way to say thank you. I just wish this place had more consistent quality of food and service. It's expensive and has always been a disappointing experience. I truly hope they can step it up! Location is killer! More vegetarian options would be greatly appreciated; some veg proteins like morningstsr bacon or sausages for veggie protein would be really awesome. read more

I've updated my review, due to them installing beer taps. They sell beer by the pint and by the QUART (served in mason jars). The beer selection was great, they had a burbon vanilla porter by Rivercity Brewing, and Hop 15 by Port Brewing Wow! Plus they serve wine and beer by the bottle too. This Rocket Bakery location is our choice road trip pit stop when going to Montana from Seattle to visit family. And thank God they were open on Easter Sunday, 'cause not much else was anywhere from Bozeman to Coeur d'Alene. Usually we just get coffee, which is pretty good, but yesterday we finally tried some of their food. They have a good selection of bagels, pastries, pasta salads, quiches and sandwiches to choose from, not to mention beer. (No we didn't drink any, since we still had hours ahead to drive.) I got a Soup & Salad combo (Garden Vegetable & Sun-dried Tomato Pasta Salad), which also came with a bagel (Asiago). The BF got the 1/2 Sandwich & Salad combo (Veggie on sourdough and Three Bean Salad). It was gloriously sunny and we wanted to eat by the river, so we asked for our food to-go, which was neatly packed into rectangular envelope boxes. On gloomier days though, I could definitely see myself plopping down at one of the many multi-size, multipurpose tables. The food actually turned out better than anticipated. My soup was chockfull of zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, corn, kidney beans, tomatoes... pretty impressive for a small cup. The pasta salad had huge chunks of artichoke hearts and pine nuts. The BF's sandwich was a forest of alfalfa, lettuce and cucumbers, from what I could tell, and got a thumbs up. This is my favorite place for baked treats. My faves- Awesome poppy seed muffins, cinnamon rolls (get it with frosting), to die for hazelnut espresso scone, and the delicious lox bagel- smoked salmon and cream cheese over your choice of home made bagel (i always get the great grains bagel), date bars, pumpkin bars, and the pink frosted sugar cookies. Hands down best bagels in town. Coffee is meh. Not a huge fan of doma. Would have given more stars but in the last few months service has been beyond slow. My typical order is an iced Americano and a toasted bagel with cream cheese to go The last 5 times I've been in I have finished my bagel long before receiving my coffee. I'd say average wait time for coffee is 10-15 min after ordering. Which in my opinion is insane. I would stop coming if the bagels weren't so perfect. One other note about the bagels. When you're paying 1.35 for cream cheese I should be receiving more than I thin layer. I always have to ask for extra and at that point it is barely an appropriate amount. read more

As a regular customer I love the rocket bakery, the atmosphere, and most of the staff. It's the place I go to for coffee after a long day of school, work, or even to prep myself to do my homework. So I'm actually rather disenchanted with this review... That aside, I find it highly unacceptable for a barista to purposely mess up someone's drink just because she's in a bad mood or didn't get the tip she wanted (and yes, I watched and heard the conversation). Not the first time she's been in a bad mood, and most likely not the last. However, no matter what she should do her job the best that she can, or move on to another job that she actually loves doing. The evening staff rocks though! What a let down of a mocha. I came her with high expectations after living in some of the coffee capitals in the world. This place has the neat location, cool building, neat interior, hipster feel but bad coffee I asked for my mocha at 140 degrees, the temperature that the sugars are still intact after steaming. Well after watching steam come off the milk i was pretty unimpressed but to top it off the batista just added some cold milk. My drink is disgusting. I'll never understand how anyone would serve nasty coffee especially to someone that at least knows something about coffee. One of the better cups of coffee in Spokane. They are just around the corner from Frank's Diner and closed to the Brown's Addition on the West side of town. The vibe is like an old mom & pop grocery store complete with viny flooring. They have a wide selection of beer and wine as well as a full deli and they make their own pastries (assumingly not at this location). Great baristas; no fuss, using Cafe Vita beans from Seattle. We ordered several items with our very hot delicious coffee. A bagel sandwich Italian w pastrami was satisfying and meaty. The chocolate croissant was light and flaky, but the real delight was the espresso hazelnut scone. Tables are spread out. I'm up-and-down with this place. I've lived in Browne's Addition for 17 years and have been visiting the Rocket Bakery off and on for the same amount of time. Over the years they have gone through good staff and bad staff. The thing is they have the best coffee when it is made correctly, they have the best treats when served by someone who doesn't have a giant stick in their bum, and have the best location when they open on time. Unfortunately, my mochas are never stirred anymore leaving all the chocolate at the bottom, most of the employees are rude and move sooooo slooooowwww (think sloths at the DMV), and they often aren't open on time. These are bad times and won't be returning for awhile and only then it'll be to see if they have a new crew. They prob will, the crew changes every 3 months or so, because they say the owner is a beast. Yes, the employees air their garbage. read more

It may not look like much from the outside, but Rocket has a lot going for it! Firstly, so much space and lots of natural light. Your laptop is welcome here, with free wifi and all. Next, the menu: besides a big list of coffee and pastries (and the BEST chocolate-dipped biscotti I've ever tasted, and did not break a tooth on) there's a big deli case of house-made pasta and grain salads, sandwiches, and quiche. The girl at the counter couldn't muster a smile and didn't acknowledge any thank you we gave. She did manage to yawn and frown however and seem thoroughly annoyed at each item we added to the order. Must be hard to punch a button on a screen since you weren't the girl who actually made our drink. I found it difficult to leave my dollar tip since you weren't gracious about that either nor did you thank us at all. I've been in customer sercice for 15 years. I know how it's done. Very hip and cool atmosphere. However, the service isn't great. We ordered three simple drinks and they forgot one. They couldn't be bothered to see us standing at the register to ask about the missing drink. I don't normally receive such terrible service at a Rocket Bakery. Maybe they were having an off day. As a barista myself at another coffee shop, I have to say, I have never seen such bad customer service. Nor does it take 10 minutes for the only drink ordered during a slow day to be made (it was mine. A breve latte takes about a minute to make.) Their pastries are delicious, as is the quiche, but I waited 45 minutes for the quiche to be brought to me. I will be back, though, because I live nearby and this place has free wifi. read more

You can't do a lot better than this for a light breakfast and decent coffee in downtown Spokane. It had me nostalgic for my undergrad days. The breakfast bagel sandwich for less than 5 bucks is hard to beat and my wife really liked her spinach and feta quiche. I don't require much out of my coffee other than strong and hot and the Rocket offers free refills and a solid wireless connection. Can't complain. read more

I love the Rocket Bakery! To me, they are the 'big city' cafes in Spokane. (Every big city has some awesome cafes that seem like a backdrop for a TV show: interesting/attractive staff, artsy-fartsy snacks and non-coffee beverage options, good coffee, excellent atmosphere, and fascinating clientele.) This coffee shop would have gotten four or five stars from me if it weren't for the snotty service I received. Service is not too much to ask for, even when it is busy. It should be expected that on a Sunday morning a coffee shop will be busy, so there is no excuse for being treated like I'm being an inconvenience for simply wanting to make an order. I felt like it ordering an extra danish was something I had to trouble my overstressed barista for rather than having her take an extra second to upsell me and make sure I get what I want. While I'm tempted to give a higher rating for the FANTASTIC Lox bagel I got there recently, I was a little disappointed with this morning's latté that tasted more like milk than the espresso-ey goodness of a latté. The prices here are pretty reasonable, you're looking at $3-$6 for any sort of "fluffy" drink, and the base espresso prices are really decent. The atmosphere is lovely, there is always good people-watching to do and the baristas are friendly even when it's busy. Overall, I'd go again--even if just for the Lox! read more
