When I stay in Spokane to visit my daughter in college I usually try to find a new coffee shop that is worthy of our NW coffee culture. Thomas Hammer Coffee on Hastings is not up to that standard. They have a good brand, good décor, nice baristas, and a good vibe. However, I seek out shops that will treat my $4 cappuccino as the most important drink they make that day. I was there early and enjoyed the baristas opening early, welcoming us and smiling. They were very hospitiable and kind. I was in line so I took the time to take a look at the menu. The menu had mostly sugar drinks and a mention of 'Signature' blended drinks with a sampling of espresso selections at 16 oz. An interesting menu item was a 'Cortado' (3-4 oz. very short 'latte' in a glass) - this encouraged me because it usually means other selections are possible (Traditional Cappuccino for example). When it was my turn to order I asked if they could do a 'Traditional Cappuccino' (Traditional is 1/3 milk, 1/3 foam, 1/3 espresso). They said sure, would I like it dry or wet? Uhmmm...tha's a 'NO'. My answer was that a Traditional was 1/3 - 1/3 - 1/3. OK - So you don't know what it is? Got it. I'm ok with that...you cater to those who want their caffeine with a good dose of sugar. Its what most folks want. However, when I started watching the Barista work the LA Marzocco she was more interested in speed than handcrafting my drink. I've worked a (coffee) bar before and this was amazing. Stretching milk mostly by sight and not by feel, not working the pitcher to get the best result but rather quickly tamping the next order in a stunning example of speed but not care, pouring to the top quickly instead of taking the time with the cup for the drive-thru. The result of my drink was a doppio macchiato with a dollop of foam - it was a traditional NW Capp. but not what I ordered and confirmed with the Barista's. Look, I get it, I'm high maintenance and if you have stuck with me by now you are probably rolling your eyes at my review. If you want a quick espresso drink or a blended sugary drink with some food, this is your place. However if you are looking for the NW coffee culture coffee shop that takes its time and care for your drink that costs $4 ~ This is not be worth the drive north of the downtown core where such places exist in Spokane. read more

I've usually had good service at this location but I haven't been in a few months and recently popped in. Things have definitely changed at this location. I ordered my usual, a chai. I think They have changed the type of chai they use because it wasn't near as good as it used to be. And the woman working the counter was not friendly at all. I think I overheard one of the other workers call her Becky or Becca, something like that. She came off as a little snarky and kind of rude and not very approachable. Not the type of person I would think would be working in a fun and lively coffee shop. So after this visit, I don't think I will go back to this Thomas Hammer location. read more

I do want my readers to be aware that "The Fireball" is misleading because it is orange and mocha and does not actually contain any fireball. The lady who took our order was beyond sweet and greeted us right when we arrived. She asked my daughter if she wanted whipped cream on her drink and my daughter said yes. A second lady rung us up and was more or less nice. When we got our drinks my daughters didn't have whipped cream she asked for. I asked for them to add whipped cream like my daughter requested. The lady who made our drinks wasn't around anymore and the lady who rung us up said it would cost extra. I wasn't about to put .60 cent on my credit card after we already paid, and I didn't have cash on me. It felt like poor communication on their part not to add the charge for the whipped cream as requested, now making it our problem and that we were being a hassle-Felt let down. read more

Wanted to start off this review by saying I am a fan of Thomas Hammer, have been going to the one on 5th Ave for a while and never had any issues. I stopped by here on my way back from visiting a friend and there was only one barista and she was very much overwhelmed, I understand finding people to work is hard right now so I was just glad to be getting my coffee. However we see this brunette woman walk in who looked like a manager and we assumed to help this poor girl out who was really doing her best but then proceeded to not help at all. At one point this poor girl seemed so overworked that she began to cry and the manager instead of offering any help or even just checking on her employee just did nothing. While still a Thomas Hammer fan I do hope they have been treating the few people who are willing to work better then this other places and I will not be going back to this location because I do not want to be supporting such poor treatment of people let alone an employee. read more

I've noticed for some time the Thomas Hammer on the North side of Spokane has changed. The aroma of the coffee and flavor has changed, I believe they're using a different blend of beans. Sometimes I feel as if I'm getting burnt milk with lukewarm water and a touch of flavor. Everything is way over priced - I feel sorry for the employees, they're over worked and a manager is never present. The managers of Thomas Hammer need to be held accountable, if they're not showing up for work to do their job and "help" they shouldn't receive pay. Those who own this establishment need to take notice and do something for your faithful employees. Take care of them. Take care of your customers as well, lower your prices and bring back the original coffee bean flavor. read more

I just got a black coffee (which was good by the way) but the staff is what really gave me a good experience. The barista was soooo nice. My total was like $2.06 so I told her I was going to dig for some change and she was like "I totally understand. Take your time!" She didn't rush me at all. My husband brings me a cup when he runs to the store to grab his newspaper, that's how he wakes me up!!! ...and THATS how I KNOW he loves Me!! Thomas Hammer has never blended a bad cup of coffee...it's always PERFECT!! :) :) I've also had the Jack Hammer, very good as well. The business is great and the server is amazing however they do not enforce the mask mandate. We just visited at 0620 today and there were three men being served without masks! They obviously thought we were comical as we were following the strict guidelines and caring about others because they were staring and laughing. So while I think the drinks are good somehow they're measurement of a pump has got to be double the industry standard. When I asked for two pumps it still tastes like I got the full measure of sugar. This happened on two separate occasions II time of which I specifically explained that I needed less sugar. To her credit she wanted me to taste it to make sure it was good. Love the fact that they have a mocha with orange syrup (The Fireball). This, to me, is just a perfect mix of coffee flavors and should be on every cafe menu. They even make it iced (which I drink year-round). My only knock on them is when they were mixing our iced Americanos, they used tap water from a sink labeled for "washing hands only." It didn't really impact the quality of the drinks but would rather see them using some filtered water or at least remove the sign above the sink. lol read more
