I'M SO UPSET. I'm upset that I didn't find out about this place sooner! The most annoying part of searching for BBQ on Yelp is that a gang of kbbq places will also pop up. So then you gotta change your search to "babyback ribs" or something of that nature. So I did just that and stumbled upon Robert Earl's BBQ! I've gone here twice (both walk-in) and both times I've ordered the 3 meat combo. They do a great job of giving you a little bit of everything you order with the meat combos. I think my combo came with 3 or 4 pork ribs, 4 pieces of rib tips, and 2 slices of brisket. ? I should've written this review the day I ate it, but oh well. Came here for BBQ with my daughter, after ordering and paying, while waiting we were reviewing our receipts when she noticed that she had been over charged. She went to the counter to inquire about the extra charge the girl at the counter got smart instead of just refunding the extra charge. We asked for refund she apparently did not know how to do that, someone else came to assist us, at that point the owner Robert Earl came to talk with us my daughter explained what happened and how the lady was being rude, we just wanted a refund. I don't usually write reviews but this BBQ joint outshines anything else I've had in Los Angeles. Must try. Great service with amazing food. Tried the beef brisket and ribs and the portions were LARGE. Asked for side recommendations and was suggested greens or Mac n cheese... Went Mac n cheese and wowowow. When a side could be a main in its own right you know you struck gold. Since it was so good I went back and ordered the greens! This place doesn't disappoint. The ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender and came three to an order. The brisket... just wow. Juicy, tender, and so smokey... these were THICK CUT and packed with flavor. White bread on the side, healthy pour of sauce... it's a good thing I live in the valley or else I'd be here every weekend. Will be back and will be trying as much of the menu as I can. The only thing I love from barbecue restaurants is the barbecue chicken breast and the sides I love. The chicken breast was too dry for me. I really want to give this place a better rating but I just can't justify it. Robert Earl's has some of the most authentic southern BBQ in town with hearty portions but the wait time to actually get your food is a big turn off. We ordered ahead and were told it would be ready in 30 minutes but I ended up waiting another 30-45 minutes to actually get my food. The food itself was actually pretty good. The beef ribs could use more salt but the brisket and pork spare ribs were delicious. Definitely get the cornbread + banana pudding combo (i forgot what it's called). Got the pork ribs, brisket, mac & cheese, and coleslaw! Every item was absolutely delicious. Ribs falling off the bone. Sauce was sweet and tangy. Coleslaw had all the correct proportions. Grew up in Louisiana, and this is the first place in Los Angeles that has satisfied my cravings. We both had brisket, but my buddy had the rib tips and I had the pork ribs. Both were served with beans and potato salad. The ribs were outstanding. Big and meaty with a great sauce. The brisket is, hands down, the best I have ever had. A peppery crust and amazing smokey flavor. The beans were top notch. The potato salad actually tasted old and a little bitter. Had such high hopes, what a disappointment! Arrived at 1pm and waited almost 10 minutes for someone to show up at the window to take our order. We ordered the 3 meat combo with brisket, pork ribs and beef ribs with Mac and cheese and collard greens sides. We were told it would be 1 hour for the food, we agreed and left to shop.he said he would call when ready. At 2:15 (1 hour later) we hadn't heard so we came in to wait, the waiting area had 10 people waiting including the guy who ordered behind us. I inquired as to how much longer and was told there were 2 ahead of me. We waited as 8 more people had their food delivered. 2 other men complained ( one said he ordered online 2 days ago and they called to say it was ready and he had been waiting an hour) and a older woman came out to check their tickets and didn't even bother to look at me even though I was standing next to them. I went to the window and gave her my tickets and after 2 hours and 10 minutes we finally got our food. I was irritated at this point but hoped the food would make up the wait. A 3 meat meal with 2 sides and some cobbler was $60. The brisket was tough and salty, the pork ribs were ok but a little salty, the beef ribs were almost burnt and very salty and tough. I randomly came across Robert Earl's through various facebook postings...but after reading about the place in the Long Beach Post, I knew I'd have to give this place a shot! My husband and I came by last night with a few friends. And the minute you walk in...it smells like heaven. They have a pretty substantial menu...so we opted for the 3 item combo. A top BBQ place for the area. Some days they are as good as Bludso's, most days Bigmista's is my favorite. I am a big brisket fan. The first few times, I visited, I thought they were the best brisket in So Cal. But I've been really liking Bludoe's the last few times I visited them. Then BigMista's opened and I feel that they are the best in the area. All of these BBQ Joints compare to Franklin BBQ and the Lockhart Texas Joints. Enjoying good BBQ caused me to visit this restaurant while I was in the LA area. It's not far from Bludso's in Compton which I really enjoyed. This hole in the wall restaurant does offer indoor seating which is a plus as this allowed me to dine in rather than eating the food in my car. I ordered a sliced brisket sandwich and a side of their beans. When ordering I notified the cashier of my Yelp discount and even showed it to her on my phone app. I thought I saw her enter the discount in the register. The food came out less than 10 minutes later. The sandwich was on a hoagie roll and I will tell you the brisket was perfect!!! The meat flavor of the brisket was so good that I didn't want to put any of their sauce on it. It was as good of brisket as I have ever had (5). The other reason that I didn't want to put any sauce on it is because I didn't love it. Actually I barely liked it (2.5). I thought it was a little too strong. I believe they have two types mild and spicy. I asked for mild. I hope that's what I got. It wasn't bad but it would have damaged the taste of that wonderful brisket. Also I liked their beans but because of the sauce that had been mixed in it I would only give the beans a 3. During the meal the owners wife came out to check on me and was very nice and friendly. As I was finishing I noticed that on my receipt I didn't receive the Yelp 10% discount on the sandwich. I went back up to the counter and asked the hot ( forgot to add that earlier) cashier about it. She was nice and said that she forgot to ring it up even when I showed it to her. She offered to make it up on my next visit but I told her I didn't live here. I didn't want to make a big deal of it because it was only a .90 discount so I told her to forget it. It wasn't about the money just the idea. Also I couldn't get too mad at that face!! After trying multiple bbq joints and being disappointed to my personal stands i was happy i found this place that exceeded my expectations. Definitely the best in town for reasonable prices. The bbq here is delicious with authentic taste. This is some solid BBQ. You know you're getting close because you can smell it as you get closer and you just float in like they do on cartoons. Anyway, it's a pretty good sized restaurant but on a warm day it was very hot inside. I'd definitely get my food to go. In fact, it's probably better to call in and order ahead because we walked in and there was a good wait. We didn't order sides, only meat. We ordered brisket and it was very good. My bf said it wasn't as tender as he would have preferred but it was still pretty good. We didn't try the beef ribs, but they looked good. I'll have to make sure I get back for that. Okay so I've gone back a few more times here and decided to bump this up to 5 stars because well the owners are just so damn sweet!! Yes, your food will likely not be ready in the 20 minutes they said it would be. If you're calling in an order for pickup. Come in 30-40 minutes instead to avoid the wait. I got the Pork Spare Ribs twice again and it was never at the same "boiled" consistency as the first time. They have the perfect amount of crust to tender ratio now and are seriously finger-licking good. A full rack of these babies is more than enough for 2 people. Beware though that sometimes they are sold out of certain meats or sides for the day. This place is starting to blow up and I'm scared I'll soon never be able to get the full rack of Pork Spare Ribs for dinner near when they are closing :( Last time we had to get the Babyback Ribs instead -- albeit also delicious, but not the same. I phoned in my order for The Lil Tex platter at 4:10pm. I was told it will be ready in 45 minutes. I arrived at Robert Earls BBQ at 5:20pm. After I paid for my order I was told that my order was not ready yet because their still waiting for the links. I didn't get my food until 5:55pm. All that wait just for some bits and pieces of brisket, salty mac & cheese, and runny cole slaw. We ended up throwing away the mac & cheese and cole slaw. The best part of The Lil Tex were the spare ribs and potato salad. This is my 3rd time ordering food from here. The meat are always on point but the sides are consistently inconsistent. We've heard it so many times before: finally great BBQ in Southern California. Most of the time, it's a report from someone who's from So Cal and never been in the South or Lower Midwest where true BBQ is smoked daily. Good BBQ is a chore to find, locally, and on our way to Robert Earls BBQ we expected to be let down, as we normally are when it comes to sampling BBQ in California. We aren't from Long Beach, but were in town to go to a Long Beach State basketball game and this place was only 15 minutes out of the way. Upon arrival, we had a bit of trouble finding it. The storefront looked more condemned than inviting. We thought it was closed before noticing smoke stemming from the back. Further investigation found a small open sign. We walked in and were greeting by a group of energetic, warm, friendly guys that were thrilled we were there (it was 2pm, the lunch crowd was gone). We spoke with the owner (I'm assuming that's Robert Earl?) who mentioned he uses the Mississippi/Texas BBQ style his grandfather taught him. While there's minor details that can be improved, you'll be challenged to find better BBQ than this in So Cal. It rivals places like Lucille's and Wood Ranch, but comes with a smaller price tag. In fact, you likely won't be able to finish your meal. We each ordered three meat combos and while my friend swallowed most of his rib tips, pulled pork and brisket, I managed to chew through about a quarter of mine (the only difference on my plate with the hot links replaced rib tips. We each enjoyed our meals. The meat was smoked well, was tender and packed flavor and fortunately the mild and hot sauce was favorable. These guys are the rare group that knows how to BBQ - in So Cal. I'd expect to find this in Tennessee, Georgia or South Carolina. And, their sweet cornbread is darn good. What's the future of Robert Earls? Will it be here long term? I'm not sure. The inside of the restaurant is doable and clean and word of mouth has carried well for this place, but the outside needs a major and I mean, major face lift. Simply put a brand new, bright, bold sign on the roof that says "Robert Earls Real BBQ", brighten up the windows and open up to the world and this place could end up on the Travel Channel. Right now, it's value is hidden behind what's like the old Berlin Wall. Invest in a makeover and the sky is the limit. Another thing, people want beverage choice. As the owner told us, his grandpa would probably slap him if he found out the only sweet tea they were serving was in an Arizona can. It's time to invest in a small pot to brew real sweet tea and offer more than Costco bottled water and Smart and Final sodas. This business is better than that. Mr Earl has done a good job here. The lady of the house even came out and gave us free mac, left a great impression. Anyway, this fed 3 ppl including myself, costing about 25 dollars. The first day I ordered, they were out for the day so my money got refunded to me through ChowNow app they use. I called the next day and asked when I have to order to get what I wanted. Their suggestion was by lunchtime for dinner. I am a fan of ribs and ordered both their pork and beef ribs and even went back and ordered one of their Texas Sampler platters for Mother's Day. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. It was a ridiculously long wait and expensive for average tasting barbecue. I ordered online at 11:20 a.m. for 12:30 p.m. pick up. The restaurant called me at 11:57 a.m. to tell me that the pick up time would be delayed to 1:30 p.m. Arrived at 1:20 p.m., when I asked about my order, the rude lady at the counter informed me that it would be two to three hours for my order to be ready. I pressed her for a more exact ETA. She was getting annoyed by my inquiry so another lady came out and informed me that my food would be ready for pickup at 3:44 p.m. (weirdly exact time). My lunch plans were blown, but I figured okay I'll adjust and we will have barbecue for dinner. Went back at 3:44 p.m.picked up the average, heavily sauced, Texas platter and was sorely disappointed. $110 with tax and tip, which would have been better spent at a chain BBQ joint like Lucille's or Johnny Rebs. read more

Yelpers! I'm ready to sing a song about Robert Earl and his BBQ!!! This is the third time I've been fortunate to inhale the flavor of the delicious tasting food that is from Robert Earl's. The first time, we picked up an order to enjoy on our road trip up north- inhaled it! The second time, we actually sat down and again inhaled what was the perfect meal for a nice summer day. Today, hubby surprised me with the brisket plate, (sauce on the side), mac & cheese, greens and for dessert-- a warm banana pudding like no one else can make. My Sunday just got even better- didn't have to cook after church and hubby hand-delivered the most well seasoned, juicy, tasty dishes from THE BEST BBQ joint in Long Beach. Robert Earl's, we salute you!!! My beef brisket is always ordered with sauce on the side. I can tell how tasty the meat is when I eat it without the sauce. I enjoy the liberty of dipping my brisket in the sauce without being subjected to someone else's heavy hand when they try to drown the meat. The mac & cheese is beyond delicious; even by itself, I would have been content. The brisket- well, it's my favorite and is perfectly seasoned. The greens had some heat on it and I could taste bitter bites here and there, but I'm not reducing any stars on my review because everything else more than made up for what the greens lacked. I was too excited when I got my Sunday lunch. I didn't think twice about snapping a few photos to post...instead, I gave thanks and got busy doing what is supposed to be done when you have a plate of Robert Earl's in front of you- you eat it slowly and appreciatively!
